The most surprising of these may be hidden in the tranquil town of Comillas in the Cantabria region of northern Spain. Antonio López López, Marquis of Comillas, a 19th-century legendary figure, was a typical los indianos (Chinese can translate as "overseas Chinese") who returned home wealthy from the "New World." He was extremely wealthy and closely connected to the royal family. In his hometown, he built the magnificent Palacio de Sobrellano and also founded the landmark Pontifical University of Comillas. King Alfonso XII once visited here, making this small town famous for a time. Right next to the Marquis's palace, a colorful building full of natural rhythm stands out— 🎐 Gaudí's early masterpiece · El Capricho This summer villa, commissioned by another "overseas Chinese," the Marquis's brother-in-law Máximo Díaz de Quijano, is the creative crystallization of Gaudí at age 31: 🌻 Over 6,000 sunflower ceramic tiles bloom toward the light 🌞 The interior flows with changes in sunlight 🎶 Music and nature dance lightly in the space Although Gaudí had not yet established his mature style at the time, "El Capricho" already showed the seeds of his future creativity. The streets are full of cute corners, cozy cafés, and some really funky architecture. Like, El Capricho by Gaudí is here, and it totally feels like a surprise in such a small town. The beach is right there too, and it’s perfect for a quick dip or just laying back with your feet in the sand. You can walk from the beach straight into the town center and grab some tapas without even changing out of your flip flops. There’s also this random mix of gothic, modernist, and traditional buildings that somehow just works. Every turn has a bit of history or something pretty to stare at. Super walkable, super photogenic, and super laid back. If you’re in Cantabria, Comillas is definitely worth a lazy afternoon or even a full day of slow exploring.
