Shannan|June's Hidden Gems! Local's Secret Summer-Only Tibetan Adventures
Dear friends! Shannan is truly more than just Yamdrok Lake! In June, this Tibetan origin land hides many summer secret spots cherished by locals: sacred lake hikes, desert parks, border canyons, and heart-shaped divine lakes. Today, I’m sharing all my treasured private routes with you to avoid crowds and unlock Shannan’s wild beauty!
🏞️ First Stop: Baimalin Lake — The Hiking Secret of Kula Gangri
This is my favorite place in Shannan! Starting from Baimalin Lake, walk along the lakeside meadows. The reflection of snow-capped mountains in the lake changes with every step. The streams along the way are drinkable, and the icy snowmelt water makes every step refreshing. Even at noon, the temperature doesn’t exceed 68°F (20°C), and drifting clouds add a cool touch. Here, you might not meet any other tourists all day, only prayer flags, mani stone piles, and wildlife accompany you. A 4 km gentle slope hike lets you see three sacred lakes (Baimalin Lake, Zhegong Lake, Jiejiu Lake) at once. With every step, the snow mountain’s reflection on the lake shifts its pose—this experience is truly amazing.
🏜️ Second Stop: Zhanang Desert Park — Tibet’s Desert Wonder
Who would have thought Tibet has a desert! Zhanang Desert Park is Tibet’s first national desert park, a desert by the Yarlung Tsangpo River, truly magical. In June, the desert temperature is just right for sand sliding, camel riding, and desert photography. Standing in the desert, one side is golden sand dunes, the other is the emerald Yarlung Tsangpo River, with green mountains in the distance. This unique landscape is breathtaking. The best part is it’s super quiet; when I visited, only a few of us were there, completely owning the desert.
💚 Third Stop: Lebu Valley — Rhododendron Sea on the Southern Slope of the Himalayas
When the warm, moist Indian Ocean air flows into the southern slope of the Himalayas in June, standing on the winding road of Lebu Valley, you see nearly vertical cliffs on both sides with waterfalls like white ribbons, and the mountainsides bursting with pink, purple, and bright red alpine rhododendrons blooming from dark green forests up to near the snowline — this is the wildest spring feast in the "Jiangnan of Tibet." Lebu Valley is home to the Menba ethnic group. Staying in a Menba house, with misty green mountains outside the window, happiness is instantly full. At just over 2000 meters elevation, oxygen is abundant, so no worries about altitude sickness. It’s Tibet’s perfect summer retreat.
💙 Fourth Stop: Gurula Lake — The Romantic Heart-Shaped Divine Lake
Hidden in the heart of the Chalatogang Snow Mountain, Gurula Lake is heart-shaped. Every June, wildflowers cover the hills, making it an ideal destination for hiking lovers. The heart-shaped divine lake reflects the snow mountains, with wildflowers blooming by the shore—this kind of romance is beyond words. The trail to the lake is a bit tough, but absolutely worth it. Standing by the heart lake, gazing at the snow mountains, the feeling is simply beautiful.
🦌 Fifth Stop: Zhegu Grassland — 64°F (18°C) Summer Pasture
A 64°F summer pasture! Tibetan antelopes and black-necked cranes frolic on the grassland. In June, Zhegu Grassland is lush and green, wildflowers everywhere, with the pristine Yala Xiangbu Snow Mountain in the distance. Zhegu Lake looks like a sapphire set in the grassland, with crystal-clear water where cattle and sheep graze leisurely by the shore. You can ride horses on the grassland or spend time at the lakeside Linka, singing, dancing, and eating Tibetan food with locals. There are no tourists here, only herders and livestock. This pure grassland life is truly healing.
🔮 Sixth Stop: Lamula Lake — The Divine Lake Among Divine Lakes
Lamula Lake is the divine lake among divine lakes, where successive Dalai and Panchen reincarnations have been recognized. At over 5000 meters elevation, you need to hike up to the viewing platform. Standing there, looking down at the divine lake, it is said that those with fate can see their past and present lives in the lake. In June, Lamula Lake’s ice melts, the water turns emerald green, and rhododendrons bloom on the surrounding mountains—especially beautiful. Although the climb is tiring, the moment you see the divine lake, it’s all worth it.
🌊 Seventh Stop: Pumoyong Lake — The Maiden’s Tears
Pumoyong Lake is known as the "Maiden’s Tears," at 5010 meters elevation, it’s Tibet’s highest freshwater lake. In June, the ice melts, the lake water is deep blue, and the distant Kula Gangri Snow Mountain reflects in the water, breathtakingly beautiful. The nearby Tuiwa Village is the highest administrative village in the world, with only a few dozen households. You can stay in Tuiwa Village, watch the stars at night, and see the sunrise in the morning. This feeling of isolation from the world is truly magical.
🌲 Eighth Stop: Rituo Monastery — The Loneliest Monastery in the World
Avoid the crowded regular viewing platforms! Rituo Monastery requires self-driving or chartered car (navigate to "Dongla Township"). The bumpy mountain road is worth it. One lake, one monastery, one monk—known as "the loneliest monastery in the world." Standing in front of the monastery, you get a 360-degree view of Yamdrok Lake, an incredibly stunning perspective. There is only one monk in the monastery, guarding it and the sacred lake. In June, Yamdrok Lake is at its bluest. Standing at Rituo Monastery, watching the sacred lake and listening to the wind, the loneliness and tranquility make you reflect on life.
