Coniston travel guide and discussion

You don’t need to drive to explore some of the Lake District’s most beautiful lakes. 🚆🚌 Here are 5 of my favourites and how to reach them by public transport. 1️⃣ Windermere 🌊 🚆 Windermere Station From the station, take the 599 to Bowness, or walk around 30 minutes to the lake. Windermere is the easiest lake to reach by train. 2️⃣ Derwentwater 🏔️ 🚆 Penrith Station Take the X4/X5 bus to Keswick, then walk down to the lake. You can also take the Keswick Launch to explore different parts of Derwentwater. 3️⃣ Ullswater 🌿 🚆 Penrith Station From Penrith, take the 508 towards Glenridding/Patterdale, or the 509 from Keswick. In summer, the UB1/UB2 Ullswater Bus connects the main villages and attractions. 4️⃣ Coniston Water 🚤 🚆 Windermere Station Take the 505 through Ambleside and Hawkshead to Coniston. You can then explore the lake by foot or take the Coniston Launch. 5️⃣ Buttermere 🏔️ 🚆 Penrith Station → Keswick Take the X4/X5 to Keswick, then connect towards Buttermere. In summer 2026, the 77/77A connects Keswick and Buttermere, while the 77C shuttle runs between Cockermouth and Buttermere on selected days. 💡 Good to know: the Lake District is surprisingly easy to explore without a car, but check timetables before travelling because some routes are seasonal. And if you’re coming from London, Penrith and Oxenholme are the mainline stations to look at, while Windermere has its own branch line. 🚆 Which lake would you visit first? 🌊 #londontravels84 #LakeDistrict #LakeDistrictTravel #Cumbria #UKTravel #EnglandTravel #TravelTips #TravelWithoutACar #familytravel #travel2026 #couplestrip #thingstodo

The stunning village of Hawkshead is a must visit location when in the lakes. Close to Windermere, Ambleside and Coniston. The village has superb cafes and the best is Poppi Red. The food and service is outstanding. The history boards around the village tell its tale. #thelakes #hawkshead #lakedistrict

Lakes

Great view

#mytraveldiary Coniston Water, Cumbria, is a serene and picturesque lake nestled in the heart of the Lake District. Its calm waters and surrounding fells create a perfect setting for outdoor activities such as sailing, kayaking, and fishing. Visitors can take leisurely walks along the shoreline, enjoying panoramic views and peaceful spots for picnics. The area is rich in history, famously linked to author and painter John Ruskin, whose former home, Brantwood, offers insight into his life and work. Quaint villages nearby provide charming cafes, local shops, and cozy accommodations. With its combination of natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and cultural heritage, Coniston Water in Cumbria is an ideal destination for families, couples, and nature lovers seeking a tranquil escape in one of England’s most stunning landscapes.

Tucked high above the village of Coniston, Levers Water is a serene mountain tarn framed by rugged fells and remnants of the area’s mining history. The hike begins near Coniston village, following well-marked trails past old copper mine workings before gradually climbing to the tarn. Along the way, you’ll enjoy sweeping views over Coniston Water and the surrounding peaks. The walk takes about 1.5–2 hours (one way) and is moderately challenging, with rocky paths and steady ascents. Once at Levers Water, the tranquil setting makes it perfect for a picnic or a quiet rest, with dramatic crags reflecting on the water’s surface. 💡 Pro Tip: Wear sturdy shoes, as the path can be uneven and boggy after rain. Arrive early for sunrise reflections or linger for golden-hour light on the fells—ideal for photography. ⸻ #LakeDistrict #Coniston #LeversWater #HikingUK #MountainWalks #LakesideViews #HiddenGemsUK #ExploreEngland #NatureEscape

Coniston Water in the Lake District national park is one of the best places to relax on a those rare sunny days in northern England. There are few better places on the lakeshore to do so than in the huge garden of the Coniston Inn. Here you can relax and possibly have some food and drink all whilst overlooking the lake and all the water activities which take place on it. #pub #lakedistrict

The walks around Tarn Hows in the Lake District national park is a natural wonderland all by itself but by taking a slight detour of the main track you will find another waterway carving itself through the natural landscape. Following the stream down from the tarn you will come across Tom Gill falls, a delightful section of waterfalls that cascade down the mountain side through ancient woodland providing a tranquil and picturesque addition to your walk. #lakedistrict #waterfall

The walk between Tarn Hows and the lake of Coniston Water can take two routes. The shorter and more direct of those takes the road downhill but those who do take that option are missing out on one of the most scenic walks in the entire Lake District. As you follow the path down for the main car pack you are greeted by towering pines as the sunlight flickers through them and the sound of the stream trickling down beside you. Further on your descent you begin to cross that stream through a series of wooden bridges before the view of the expansive lake comes into site. #lakedistrict #Woods #trails

The Lake District national park as its name suggests is full of beautiful water features including the biggest lake in England. But size isn’t everything and one of the smaller bodies of water in the region may take the crown for being the most beautiful. The 2.5km route around Tarn Hows on the foothills of the mountains that surround Coniston Water is the perfect easy walk or as part of a longer hike in the area. On a sunny day as the crystal clear water reflects the trees that cling to the edge, there are very few places that can match its beauty #outdoors #lake

One of my favourite walks in the lakes, such fun exploring the ruins of the old mine#lakedistrict #localguides
