Franciscan ruin on the Argideen River, free, open daylight, no desk.The abbey is the best-photographed ruin in West Cork: tower, cloister arcade, carved tympanum, all roofless and pink at sunset. Then I walked the 4 km former railway line (now a greenway) to Courtmacsherry — a village of 80 houses, a sailing club, and the Bay View Hotel bar where the Wren Boys play on St Stephen's Day (Dec 26). The bay itself is a tidal shelf, oyster beds, and a 10-minute shore path to the old lifeboat house. Mistake: I did this at 2 pm in August — the greenway was a family-bike conveyor; 9 am or 7 pm is silent. Another mistake: ordering food at Courtmacsherry on a Tuesday — one café, closed. Pack a ham roll in Timoleague. The abbey has no toilet; use the village shop (€0.50, coin). Worth it? Yes — two West Cork stops, zero entry fees, one pint at the Bay View (€6.50) for atmosphere. The abbey alone justifies the trip; the bay is the digestif. Question: with the abbey free and the bay free, is the value all in the €6.50 pint and the Wren Boys folklore, or is the greenway walk the quiet hero?

Just a short walk out of the charming village of Blarney, it's 25 minutes by bus from the centre of Cork. 🐮 I started by passing through a willow tunnel and took a long walk down the path with cows grazing and birds singing. ⛰️ I then reached Blarney Lough, the Castle's idyllic lake. You can head out on a small floating jetty to get unblemished views of the Irish hills. 🏰 Passing by Blarney House, it actually stopped me in my tracks! Beautiful. I could imagine a delightful summer party or afternoon tea in front of this place with the backdrop of blue sky. 📷 Then: the Castle... simplistic beauty, again with the backdrop of blue sky. We spent our honeymoon from 12-17 September, and the experience was wonderful. Our room was beautifully decorated with petals, a heartfelt message, and a bottle of wine to welcome us. The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. A waitress in the dining room went above and beyond, though we regret not remembering her name. While everyone was professional and pleasant, Wilky and Issa stood out for their exceptional service. The hotel itself is clean, situated in a lovely neighborhood, centrally located, and close to the underground. What can I say? I did not want to go on a cruise. My hubby really did so I treated him to a 4 day trip from Southampton to Cork, Ireland. The staff were amazing. Our waiter was such a lovely guy, ensuring everything met his standard, which was high and what was best for his customer. He made us feel like we were his most important customers even though he was serving many more who may also have felt like he treated them the same way. The drinks guy was also wonderful. He knew what drinks we wanted before we ordered them each night and took time out to chat with us. The food. I could not fault it. You could either eat in the restaraunts or go up to the self service where the choice was unending. Pizza to pasta, noodles to soup, roast chicken to cold meats. I think if you could name it, it was possibly there. Well not everything but a vast majority of different foods. The desserts were a work of art. Such talented cooks. See the photos. Onto the shows. At one of the shows, I went to see, I sat with my mouth open. I was not a pretty sight but the acrobatics were mesmerising. One man hanging from one arm and..... You can imagine. Then the Michael Jackson impersonator. His moves and voice. So close to the real thing. The dancers were great. Even though the ship was moving a little they kept their cool and carried on dancing faultlessly. They ran quizzes, they had musicians playing, people singing and the atmosphere was exciting. With lifts to take you from floor to floor, one with a view of the sea as you went up. AMAZING. They had a run track and walk track around one of the outside levels. A gym for those who felt the urge. They had dance lessons and also offered pilates. Shops to treat yourself and then they also offered some excursions at a little extra cost. Our rooms were cleaned and restocked daily. Getting on and getting off was run so well, although it did take us a little while to get out of the car park. They had staggered disembarking but the car park seemed to be the only bit that let dissembarkment down. But honestly what more could you want? Would definitely recommend the MSC Virtuosa and crew.
