But very few realize that just around 2 hours away by high-speed train is one of the most underrated historical cities in the entire country. If you love ancient cities, temples, history, incredible food, and places that don’t feel overcrowded with international tourists, Datong absolutely deserves 2–3 days of your trip. After spending time here, it easily became one of the biggest highlights of our China journey. Here’s exactly how I would plan the perfect visit. Day 1 — Check into one of the best hotels in Datong 🏡I highly recommend staying at Yunzhong Chaoran Pavilion. Without exaggeration, this was one of the best hotels we stayed at during our travels around China. The hotel is beautifully designed in traditional Chinese style, the rooms are luxurious and incredibly spacious, everything is spotless, breakfast is delicious, and the staff are genuinely wonderful. One of my favorite details is that guests can borrow traditional Chinese outfits free of charge. The hotel itself is so beautiful that it feels like a movie set, making it the perfect place for a photo shoot before you even begin exploring the city. Another huge advantage is its location. It’s right inside Datong Ancient City, within walking distance of almost every major attraction. After checking in, spend the afternoon exploring the Ancient City. I recommend visiting: · Huayan Temple · Shanhua Temple · The Nine Dragon Wall · Drum Tower · And most importantly, simply wander through the old streets. Some of my favorite moments in Datong came from walking without any destination and soaking up the atmosphere. Sunset on the Ancient City Wall — Don’t miss this If there’s one thing you absolutely shouldn’t skip, it’s the Ancient City Wall at sunset. Around 5:30 PM, entry to the wall becomes ticketed, but it’s completely worth it. Arrive about 30–40 minutes before sunset. You’ll first see the city bathed in warm golden light. Then, as darkness falls, everything changes. The ancient walls come alive with spectacular lighting, colorful projections, and illuminated towers. Looking across the traditional rooftops with Datong’s modern skyline rising behind them creates one of the most incredible views in the city. It was easily one of our favorite evenings in China. 🛕 Day 2 — Hanging Temple The drive from our hotel took approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes by taxi. Your driver will drop you at the visitor center. One very important tip… You’ll first need to purchase an entrance ticket to the scenic area. If you also want to walk inside the Hanging Temple itself, buy that ticket immediately. We didn’t. And we regretted it. By the time we reached the entrance, the tickets had sold out, and it’s impossible to purchase them later. From the visitor center, you can either walk around 20 minutes or take the shuttle bus, which only takes about 5 minutes. Whether you enter the temple or not, the Hanging Temple is absolutely breathtaking. Seeing a 1,500-year-old wooden temple built directly into a cliff is something you’ll never forget. Return to Datong in the evening. What you absolutely have to eat Don’t leave Datong without trying Dao Xiao Mian (刀削面)—Shanxi’s famous knife-cut noodles. You can choose wide noodles or thin noodles, both served with tender beef and a rich, savory sauce. We tried both versions, and honestly, they were some of the best noodles we had anywhere in China. If you’d like to try a local specialty drink, order a glass of Fenjiu (汾酒), the famous Shanxi spirit that has been produced here for centuries. 🗿Day 3 - Yungang Grottoes If you have a third day, dedicate it to the incredible Yungang Grottoes, one of China’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The taxi ride from Datong is easy, and I recommend setting aside 3–4 hours. Take your time. Besides exploring the caves, the park itself is beautiful, with peaceful walking paths along the river. If you’re short on time, make sure you don’t miss: ⭐ Cave 5 & 6 — home to the giant seated Buddhas. ⭐ Cave 13 — one of the largest sculptures in the complex. ⭐ Cave 20 — the iconic open-air Buddha and the most famous viewpoint. Only have 2 days? No problem. You can combine the Hanging Temple and the Yungang Grottoes into one full day. It will be busy but completely manageable by taxi if you’re short on time. ⚠️Continue your journey Datong fits perfectly into a Northern China itinerary. The archway at the entrance of Longquan Temple is covered with coiled dragons and stone lions, carved by 50 artisans over 6 years!!
