It sits at an altitude of 4,040 m, with a lake surface area of about 6.2 square kilometers, an average depth of 10 m, and a maximum depth of 15 m. It is a famous glacial lake in Ganzi Prefecture. The water source comes from the glaciers and melting snow of Que'er Mountain. The stream flowing from the lake’s end is one of the headwaters of the Cuoqu River. Yulong Lacuo (also called Yulong Lacuo) means “heartfelt sacred lake” and is also known as the “Western Paradise Jade Pool.” According to the famous Tibetan epic King Gesar, the hero Gesar’s beloved consort Zhumu was so captivated by the lake and mountain scenery here that she lingered and could not leave, giving the lake its name. 1

Yet, this idleness is no longer the hollow anxiety I felt when I first came; it has blossomed into a profound, fulfilling tranquility. Reflecting on the moments of this journey, the shifting peaks, the howling winds, and the tapping raindrops have all transformed into indelible marks on these bluestone slabs. They have embraced all my vulnerabilities, confusions, joys, and epiphanies, crystallizing them into a grounded, solid texture. Crossing the rolling highland meadows, near Luhuo County, a serene blue lake suddenly appears in sight—this is the hidden Tibetan secret, Kasa Lake. Kasa Lake is located in Chonggu Township, Luhuo County, right next to National Highway G317. At an altitude of 3,510 meters, it is a provincial wetland reserve and one of the most representative waterbird habitats in northwest Sichuan. The unique natural environment keeps the area vibrant year-round, making it a must-visit healing spot on the G317 Luhuo section. We stopped at the roadside viewing platform to gaze out. The clear, gentle lake water was calm and peaceful. On windless sunny days, the lake surface is as smooth as a mirror, reflecting the continuous mountain ranges, flowing clouds, and vast grasslands, blending mountains, water, clouds, and sky into one, creating a deeply immersive atmosphere. The viewing platform is surrounded by vast green meadows with open views and fresh scenery. Free parking, sightseeing, and strolling are available, making it an excellent rest and photo stop for self-drivers. In the hearts of the local Tibetan people, Kasa Lake is a sacred mother lake, carrying rich Tibetan cultural heritage. The lake is home year-round to various wild waterbirds such as black-necked cranes, bar-headed geese, and wild ducks, full of spiritual energy. It is said that a unique "fish calling" phenomenon occurs here—calling softly will gather groups of highland naked carp to the shore, showing the gentle harmony between humans and nature, offering a deeply healing experience. On the morning of June 3 last year, we left Dege and headed east along the G317 Sichuan-Tibet northern route. Our destination that day was Luhuo. The landscape unfolded along the way, with grasslands, river valleys, and snow-capped mountains appearing one after another. Every stretch of road was worth stopping for. More moving than the plateau’s grand scenery was the unexpected encounter with the “revolutionary city” — Ganzi County. “Ganzi” comes from Tibetan, meaning “pure and beautiful.” This small city, with over 1,300 years of administrative history, sits at the heart of northern Kang and on the banks of the Yalong River, at an altitude of 3,410 meters. Surrounded by continuous snow-capped mountains, it is not only a key town on the northern Tea Horse Road but also a sacred land steeped in red memories. At the park plaza beside the national highway stands a solemn statue of Commander-in-Chief Zhu De and the Fifth Geda Living Buddha. We found an empty spot by the roadside to stop briefly and took photos near the sculpture area. On the cultural wall next to the statue, the left side is engraved with the bright red words “great journey,” and the right side displays the eight-character slogan “stay true to the original aspiration and keep moving forward” in gold on a red background, striking a chord with all who see it. A nearby stone carving reads “Ganzi’s Ganzi: red grassland,” quietly telling every traveler passing through about the snowy Long March over 80 years ago.
