[Busan/Gijang] Authentic and exquisite local cuisine! Enjoy rich sea urchin and seaweed soup at "Sunyi Sikdang"
Gijang, a coastal town located a short distance from the center of Busan, is widely known for its crabs. However, its most famous local product, renowned throughout Korea, is actually "Gijang seaweed (기장미역)."
This time, we visited "Suni Sikdang," a popular restaurant with a distinctly local Gijang atmosphere, and enjoyed their exquisite "Sea Urchin and Seaweed Soup (성게미역국 / Seongge Miyeokguk)."
We'll provide a detailed report on this hidden gem, a must-visit spot for exploring Gijang Market or for breakfast and lunch.
In Korea, Gijang is synonymous with seaweed, and the seaweed harvested in this region is considered a top-quality brand. The Gijang coast has very strong currents and rich nutrients in the seawater, so the wakame seaweed grown here is characterized by its firm texture, thick flesh, and strong bite.
Unlike typical wakame, it doesn't fall apart even after being simmered for a long time, and the more you chew, the deeper the aroma of the sea and the rich umami flavor melt into your mouth. It's no wonder that this wakame soup is so popular that it attracts repeat customers, not only from the local area but also from central Busan.
"Sooni Sikdang" is a popular, locally-focused restaurant quietly nestled in the Gijang area's charming, local neighborhood. Unlike the bustling, overly touristy large restaurants, it offers a warm, homey atmosphere frequented by local regulars and travelers who have heard about it through word of mouth.
Upon entering the restaurant, you're greeted warmly with smiles by the owners, creating a comforting atmosphere reminiscent of a traditional Korean eatery. Whether you're traveling alone or in a group, this restaurant is easy to enter and offers a comfortable atmosphere where you can relax and enjoy local cuisine.
This time, I ordered the restaurant's signature dish, "Sea Urchin and Seaweed Soup (성게미역국)." The moment it was served, the fragrant aroma of sesame oil and the sweet scent of the sea wafted up with the steam, instantly whetting my appetite!
A rich and flavorful soup with concentrated umami
Taking a sip of the soup, the rich and deep umami of the broth spread throughout my mouth, making me exclaim in delight! The thick seaweed from Gijang has a smooth texture and a firm bite, and each bite releases a rich flavor of the sea.
The sweetness and flavor of the generously added sea urchin
The soup is generously filled with chunks of sea urchin (성게), and its sweetness melts nicely into the warm soup, instantly enhancing the depth of the overall broth. The sea urchin has absolutely none of the typical fishy smell or strong taste; only a mellow richness permeates the entire soup, making it truly exquisite. It's a gentle and luxurious flavor that warms you from the inside out.
A generous selection of banchan (side dishes) and rice to finish
Each of the handmade banchan (small bowls) on the table is carefully prepared, and the seasonal vegetables and kimchi pair perfectly with the soup. After enjoying about half of the soup as is, the authentic Korean way is to add the rice from the set to the soup and eat it "gukbap" style! The moment you savor the rice that has absorbed the delicious flavor, along with the seaweed and sea urchin, is a moment of pure bliss.
💡 4. How to access and recommended routes
