My football night began on the terrace of Bragernes Å—a beer garden along the banks of the Drammenselva river flowing through the Bragernes side in the heart of Drammen, the commercial hub of southeastern Norway, just a 40-minute train ride from Oslo. The glow of the summer midnight sun gently grazes the river's surface, and the leaves of the birch trees (Bjørk) lining both shores rustle in the wind. Against this lush green backdrop, a giant projector set up on the riverbank displays the final matches of the World Cup group stage or the climax of the knockout rounds. The very moment the referee blows the "Final Whistle," the birch branches sway smoothly, as if the whole city is breathing a sigh in the lingering afterglow of the match. Toasting with local fans over draft beer at a "Skjenkestova", the curtain falls on a night of sheer passion, accompanied by the gentle murmuring of the river. This is the calm and beautiful football night—the Drammen way, the Norwegian way. [Drammen Bragernes Å Riverside Viewing Guide] Location: Bragernes Å (the riverside promenade along Bragernes Street). A 5-minute walk from Drammen Station. The area right behind the City Hall (Bragernes Rådhus) is the absolute best spot. Broadcasting: All matches are broadcast live for free on NRK1 / TV 2. The city sometimes hosts public viewings during summer events (definitely worth checking). What to Order: A Pilsner from the local "Aass Bryggeri" (Drammen's historic brewery founded in 1876). A glass savored under the shade of the birch trees is truly exceptional. What to Bring: Sunglasses for the strong sun from midday to early evening, and a light jacket or scarf to brave the Nordic river breeze at night. Access: About 40-50 minutes from Oslo S via the Vy train (round trip available). Since the last train leaves around 11:00 PM, be sure to head out early and double-check your return route on nights with extra time or penalty shootouts. Side Note: Over in the Strømsø district on the opposite bank, you'll find bars housed in renovated old wooden warehouses—great alternatives for rainy days. The rustling of the birch leaves and the referee's final whistle. That serene lingering echo is the greatest treasure my football night discovered in this city.

From Oslo, it’s easy to get to Drammen, by train or bus. From Oslo Airport you have the choice of the Airport Express train or the regular and cheaper commuter train. The first impression of Drammen through the vast public square Bragernes Torg is a positive one, especially on a sunny day as the pavement cafes were full and there were plenty of people wandering around ..
