#howislivingthere 🐮🐮 A short trip out of Edinburgh leads to a lovely highland cattle farm, a soothing escape from the busy city streets. Fluffy Highland coos roam freely across rolling green grasslands, wandering and resting at their own relaxed pace. You can walk along gentle trails to quietly observe their natural daily life without rushing. Fresh mountain wind, wide pastoral views and these gentle shaggy cattle create an incredibly calming atmosphere. This quiet rural visit lets you soak up slow Scottish countryside charm far away from crowded tourist landmarks.

A city known for its rainy weather throughout the year, cool and comfortable temperatures, and breathtaking architecture. The atmosphere here is truly spectacular and absolutely lives up to its reputation! When I first arrived, I was genuinely amazed. After spending several hours on the train from Manchester to get here, I can honestly say it was totally worth it! 😍 Here are some of the must-see landmarks I visited: 1. Dean Village 🏡 A small, charming village that is beautiful from every angle. Seriously, you can take photos almost anywhere and they’ll turn out amazing! It’s about a 1 km walk from the train station, so it’s not too far at all. 2. Ross Fountain 🌳 A lovely spot in the park to sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery. The beautiful greenery really stands out, and the view of Edinburgh Castle in the background makes it even more impressive. 3. The Vennel 📸 A long staircase leading uphill. It’s not a very long walk, and once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with an amazing, unobstructed view of Edinburgh Castle. Definitely worth the climb! 4. Victoria Street 🌈 A charming, sloping street lined with colorful buildings, restaurants, cafés, and souvenir shops. It’s such a fun street to wander around and take photos. On our last day in Edinburgh, we started by visiting Dean Village. It is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in the city. This historic village was once home to old water mills, and today it’s famous for its charming stone houses, the Water of Leith, and lovely riverside views. It felt like walking into a storybook. Next, we visited St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral. The cathedral is beautiful, with tall towers, stunning stained-glass windows, and amazing Gothic architecture. For lunch, we went to Star Chef Chinese Restaurant. We ordered stir-fried pork intestine, pork ribs in sour soup, and mapo tofu. The food was delicious, and I highly recommend this restaurant if you enjoy authentic Chinese food. After lunch, we walked along the Royal Mile and Victoria Street, looking for souvenirs and enjoying the atmosphere. We also saw famous street characters in Edinburgh. The Newspaper Guy takes your photo with a vintage camera and prints it on the front page of a newspaper as a special souvenir. We also listened to a man wearing a traditional Scottish kilt while playing the bagpipes. It was a great Scottish experience! Before leaving, we visited Bakehouse Close, one of the filming locations for the Frankenstein movie. Finally, we took the Avanti West Coast train back to England, ending our wonderful 3-day trip to Edinburgh. Edinburgh is a beautiful city full of history, great food, and unforgettable experiences. Edinburgh Castle 🏰 One of the highlights of Edinburgh! The castle is grand and impressive, with incredible architecture and beautiful views overlooking the city. Walking around inside the castle really gives you a sense of Edinburgh’s rich history. 2. St. Giles’ Cathedral ⛪️ A stunning and impressive cathedral located in the heart of Edinburgh. There’s no admission fee — visitors are simply encouraged to make a donation. The architecture inside is absolutely beautiful and definitely worth a visit! 3. Calton Hill 🌄 A short and easy walk uphill with a well-maintained path. Once you reach the top, the views are absolutely beautiful. It’s a perfect spot to sit down, have a little picnic, and enjoy the sunset while taking in the panoramic views of Edinburgh. 4. Cockburn Street 📸 A beautiful curved street lined with charming European-style buildings. Every corner is incredibly photogenic, making it one of my favorite spots for taking photos in Edinburgh! 5. Scott Monument 🏛️ One of Edinburgh’s most iconic landmarks, and you can’t really miss it! It’s located right next to Waverley Station, so you’ll spot this impressive Gothic monument almost as soon as you leave the train station. 6. The Scottish Bagpipers 🎶🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 One of the most iconic sights and sounds of Edinburgh! You’ll often come across Scottish bagpipers playing traditional music on the streets, especially around the Old Town and popular tourist areas. The sound of the bagpipes echoing through the historic streets, surrounded by Edinburgh’s beautiful old architecture, creates such a unique Scottish atmosphere. It really feels like a signature part of the Edinburgh experience — and definitely something you shouldn’t miss while exploring the city! ✨ The monument was built in memory of Sir Walter Scott and is one of the largest monuments dedicated to a writer anywhere in the world. Its dramatic Gothic design makes it stand out beautifully against the Edinburgh skyline. It’s especially impressive when viewed from Princes Street, and definitely worth stopping by for a few photos as you explore the city. Edinburgh has so many beautiful places to explore, and every corner seems to have its own charm. ❤️

Edinburgh Castle is the true soul of the city—a landmark that's worth visiting whether it's your first time or a return trip! The service and management here are top-notch, with an excellent guide system and extensive multi-language support that makes for a seamless experience. What struck me most was the panoramic view of Edinburgh; the natural scenery is breathtaking, and the site offers a deep dive into Scotland's rich history. It has its own unique charm whether you visit by day or at night. Pro-tips: Make sure to catch the 1 o'clock gun firing—it’s a great photo op. The area is spacious so there's no long queue, but do be on time! If you're craving a traditional British afternoon tea, I'd suggest booking a table in advance. For a more spontaneous meal, the self-service cafeteria inside the castle offers plenty of variety, and you rarely have to worry about finding a seat. In short, this is a must-visit. You’re guaranteed to leave with wonderful memories! 🏰✨

If you’re walking around Edinburgh’s New Town, you might pass The Dome without realising just how impressive it is inside. 👀 I definitely think it’s worth popping in, even if you’re not planning a full meal. 🏛️ First, the building The Dome is inside a spectacular former banking hall, and the Georgian architecture is honestly the first thing that grabs your attention. The building dates back to the 1840s and was originally built for the Commercial Bank of Scotland. Today it’s a restaurant, bar and afternoon-tea destination, but you can still see plenty of the original grandeur. ✨ And yes… the name makes sense when you see that incredible dome! 😍 🍰 Afternoon tea This is probably what The Dome is best known for. Afternoon tea is served in the Georgian Tea Room, surrounded by all that beautiful décor. You get the traditional combination of sandwiches, scones, cakes and tea, presented on silver stands. ☕️🧁 It’s definitely more of a special-occasion experience than a quick coffee stop. 🍽️ But it’s not just afternoon tea The Grill Room serves lunch and dinner, while the Club Room serves brunch from 10am. So you can visit at different times of day depending on what you fancy. 🍳🥂 💷 What about the price? It isn’t a budget option, and recent reviews often mention that prices can feel high. However, some diners have also praised the food, service and overall experience — including a recent two-course lunch menu at £25. ⭐ What I think makes it worth seeing For me, it’s the combination of the building + atmosphere + food. Even if you decide not to have a full meal, I’d put The Dome on your Edinburgh list and at least have a look inside. 📸 It’s one of those places where you’ll probably find yourself looking up at the ceiling before you even think about taking a photo! 💡 Practical tip: Reservations are strongly recommended, especially for the Georgian Tea Room and Grill Room. The Dome is open daily, with the Club Room from 10am and the Georgian Tea Room and Grill Room from 12pm. #easytravelpost Let me start with my ongoing love-hate saga with British trains. Four days, three mishaps. This time? I got on the wrong train. Same platform, trains every minute or two – blink and you miss the right one. I arrived 20 minutes early, saw a train, hopped on. Five minutes later, the announcements didn't match my destination. Luckily, the direction was the same – both trains stopped at Newcastle. I sprinted off, dashed across platforms with 15 minutes to spare, and somehow caught my original train. Made it. No one clapped, but I felt like a hero. Then Edinburgh. This city is Chongqing's long-lost twin – vertical, chaotic, and utterly confusing. Stepped out of the station to find the bus stop 50 metres above me, on a bridge that required a 10-minute detour to reach. Gave up, took a cab. Everywhere is either steep stairs or endless slopes. Afternoon stroll through Dean Village – a hidden pocket of fairy-tale houses tucked in a valley, yellow walls and red roofs reflected in the stream. Felt like stepping out of the capital's buzz. Then Circus Lane – cobblestones glistening after rain, climbing vines spilling over doorways, a clock tower at the end. Walked to the Scott Monument – that soaring blackened Gothic spire honouring Sir Walter Scott, one of the world's largest monuments to a writer. A city giving its tallest tribute to a novelist – I love that. Below it, Princes Street Gardens framed the dark medieval skyline in the rain. But the rain had other plans – from drizzle to downpour. I had planned to catch the famous Calton Hill sunset (the one they say you should see once in a lifetime). Gave up hope. Found a café, waited. At 7pm, I climbed anyway – the steps had turned into a mini waterfall. No sunset, just rain-soaked city views. And you know what? It was still beautiful. 🌧️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

If you're visiting for the first time, these are the 6 places I'd put at the top of your list. 🏰 1. EDINBURGH CASTLE Start at the top. Edinburgh Castle dominates the city from its position on Castle Rock and has played a central role in Scotland's history for centuries. Explore the historic buildings, see the Scottish Crown Jewels and stand on the castle walls for incredible views across Edinburgh. Best for: History, architecture & views. 🏘️ 2. THE ROYAL MILE Then walk down the city's most famous street. The Royal Mile runs through the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town, connecting Edinburgh Castle with the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Along the way you'll find historic buildings, hidden closes, traditional pubs, shops and some of the city's oldest streets. Don't just stay on the main road. Look down the little closes branching off it. Best for: History, walking & atmosphere. ⛰️ 3. ARTHUR'S SEAT For the best adventure in the city, climb a volcano. Arthur's Seat rises above Holyrood Park and offers spectacular panoramic views across Edinburgh and beyond. The hike can be steep in places, but reaching the summit is worth the effort. #slowtraveling Four days in Scotland, and for once, I didn’t feel the need to rush. I stopped when the view was worth stopping for- which happened a lot. Edinburgh felt like the kind of city that made ordinary walks memorable. The stone buildings, steep streets, and unpredictable weather gave everything a slightly dramatic atmosphere. 1. Explore the Old Town I started at Edinburgh Castle, then walked down the Royal Mile, stopping to explore small closes and old shops along the way. I also visited St Giles’ Cathedral, which was worth stepping inside for a quieter moment. 2. Climb for the view I walked up Arthur’s Seat early one morning. The climb was a little tougher than I expected, but reaching the top and seeing Edinburgh, the coastline, and surrounding hills made it completely worthwhile. On the way back, I wandered through Holyrood Park. 3. See Edinburgh after dark One evening, I explored the atmospheric streets around Grassmarket, then stopped at a traditional pub for dinner and a drink. Later, I walked past the castle as it lit up against the night sky. I also made time for Dean Village, a peaceful contrast to the busy Old Town. What I loved most about Edinburgh was its mood. It feels historic without being frozen in the past, and even a simple walk can turn into an unexpected discovery. Edinburgh was one of those cities where I realised pretty quickly - walking around is part of the experience. If it’s your first trip, here’s what I’d actually recommend 👇 🏰 1. Start with the Old Town & Royal Mile 📍 Royal Mile Walk it rather than rushing between attractions. The old buildings, tiny closes and side streets were honestly half the experience. 🐕 2. Stop at Greyfriars Bobby 📍 Candlemaker Row It takes only a few minutes, but the story behind Edinburgh’s famous loyal dog makes the stop worthwhile. 🏛️ 3. Walk towards Princes Street 📍 Scott Monument / Princes Street Gardens The architecture changes completely and you get some brilliant city views. 📸 4. Look up more than you look at Maps Edinburgh has details everywhere - towers, stone buildings, flags and streets that suddenly open into great views. 🚌 5. Use the sightseeing bus if you’re short on time For a first visit, it’s an easy way to understand the layout of Edinburgh before exploring the areas you like on foot. The official tourism guide also recommends hop-on hop-off buses as a way to see the city. 👟 6. Wear proper walking shoes This is the one I underestimated. Edinburgh is extremely walkable, but cobbled streets + slopes make comfortable shoes worth it. 💡 What I learnt: Don’t over-plan Edinburgh. Pick a few places you really want to see and walk between them. Edinburgh Castle is rightly known all around the world and is a tourist hotspot in Britain. However whenever I have been there I have found it all a little underwhelming. This is despite my interest in history. This is down to my own personal preferences though. Firstly I don't like dull, wet and grey weather which is unfortunately the norm in Edinburgh and Scotland most of the days of the year 😂 Secondly I find the castle looks less like a castle and more like an ugly large house built on a hill with many additions over the years. The result is not a very uniform or coherent structure but rather a mess. The Royal Mile does attract the crowds and can be a lively place with atmosphere, especially at Hogmanay the Scottish New Year. However it is a tourist trap with over priced shops. #edinburgh Don't get me wrong! Many people love Edinburgh Castle and all it represents. Its' just not my cup of tea.
