Eltham travel guide and discussion

Looking to escape the city's hustle and bustle this weekend? Join me for a stroll through the Montsalvat estate in Melbourne's Eltham neighborhood~ Founded by Justus Jörgensen in 1934, this historic artist community is truly unique. The entire estate is built of stone, blending medieval European architectural styles to create a totally fairytale vibe! Walking through it feels like stepping into a quiet little village—completely unlike your typical, monotonous art galleries~ Montsalvat isn't a lifeless historical relic; it remains a vibrant hub today. Artists are constantly creating, exhibiting, and hosting various workshops and performances here. It's full of life! 🌿 The lush gardens and sprawling green spaces make it the perfect weekend hideaway for some peace and quiet. Every corner—from the ancient stone walls and courtyards to the arches—is an incredible photo spot. There's also a highly atmospheric little chapel and the Great Hall where you can capture stunning shots in seconds~ 🎨 With its perfect blend of art and history, wandering around and soaking up the afternoon here is super chill. You can explore the galleries and admire the artwork, or just grab a quick bite at the cafe. If the weather is nice, why not bring a picnic and chill on the lawn? It’s the ultimate way to add a little aesthetic ritual to your everyday life! 📍[Address] 7 Hillcrest Ave, Eltham VIC 3095, Australia ⏰ [Opening Hours] Monday to Sunday 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM

It's been 3 days since I got back from Melbourne. Every time I close my eyes, I can still smell the coffee in the alleys and see the sunset at St Kilda Beach, shivering in the cold. Trip highlights (key points) 🎨 Hosier Lane Right next to Flinders Street Station. The whole lane changes every week—what you photograph today might be painted over tomorrow. Go in the morning when it's less crowded and the light is good. Wear plain colors, or you'll blend into the walls. 📚 State Library Victoria Head straight up to the 6th floor for the domed reading room. Desks arranged in a circular pattern surround the huge dome, like stepping into a movie. Free entry, but keep your voice down—people are actually reading in there. 🐧 Phillip Island penguin parade At dusk, little penguins waddle up from the sea, hundreds of them lining up to head back to their burrows. Whatever you do, don't use flash—it hurts their eyes. The wind by the beach is intense; even a down jacket isn't overkill. 🛣️ Great Ocean Road The Twelve Apostles actually looks better on cloudy days—the sea mist makes the rock formations look apocalyptic. There are so many curves you might get carsick, so take motion sickness meds in advance. Don't rush through it with a day tour; if you can, drive yourself and take it slow. ☕️ Degraves Street The heart of Melbourne's coffee culture. Pick any café, order a Flat White, and sit by the door watching people go by. Here, coffee isn't meant to be sweetened—it's all about the flavor of the beans themselves. 4-day relaxed itinerary Day 1: City walk (Station → Hosier Lane → State Library → Queen Victoria Market) Day 2: Great Ocean Road day trip (leave early, or you'll still be on the road after dark) Day 3: Puffing Billy steam train + Phillip Island (do both in one day, they're on the way) Day 4: Seafood at South Melbourne Market → wrap up at St Kilda Beach Food, in short 🥧 Australian meat pie: flaky pastry filled with rich gravy, grab one from any street shop and bite in while it's hot 🦪 South Melbourne Market: freshly shucked oysters with lemon, best enjoyed standing up ☕️ Lune croissants: go early, or they'll be sold out by the time you get there
