Ferrara travel guide and discussion

Bologna is a great base for exploring the region: from here, you can easily take train trips to cities steeped in history, while also discovering small medieval villages, colorful mosaics, and lagoons. Here are eight ideas for day trips—without changing your hotel. 🏛️ 1. Modena—the city of Ferrari and balsamic vinegar Modena is just a 20-30-minute train ride away. Its historic center, with its Romanesque cathedral, Piazza Grande, and Ghirlandina Tower, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is famous for its traditional balsamic vinegar, Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale di Modena, and the Ferrari museums. It's the perfect combination of history, cars, and gastronomy. 🧱 2. Ferrara—a Renaissance city Ferrara is the former capital of the powerful d'Este family. Here, you should see the Castello Estense with its moat surrounded by water, the cathedral, and the wide streets of the historic center. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is perfect for a leisurely day stroll. ✨ 3. Ravenna – Byzantine Mosaics If you're looking for something truly unique, head to Ravenna. Its churches and mausoleums preserve Byzantine mosaics from the 5th and 6th centuries—with gold backgrounds, intricate ornamentation, and stunningly expressive figures. Particularly impressive are the Basilica di San Vitale and the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia. Several of the city's monuments are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. 🍝 4. Parma – Music, Art, and Gastronomy Parma combines elegant architecture, artistic heritage, and renowned food. In the center are the cathedral with a fresco by Correggio, the pink marble baptistery, and the Teatro Farnese. It's also the birthplace of Prosciutto di Parma and one of the main centers of Parmigiano-Reggiano production. 🏘️ 5. Dozza — an open-air medieval village A small village near Imola, where the walls of houses have been transformed into artistic canvases. Murals adorn the facades, and the streets are dominated by Rocca Sforzesca, a fortress housing the region's wine cellar. Dozza is especially perfect for a leisurely stroll and photos. 🌿 6. Brisighella — streets, hills, and an unusual tower One of the most picturesque borgos in the region. Here you can see Via degli Asini, a covered medieval street with arches, the ancient Rocca Manfrediana fortress, and a clock tower on a hill. The village is surrounded by green hills, and the local olive oil is another reason to linger. 🦩 7. Comacchio — Canals and Lagoons A small town on the water, sometimes called the little Venice of Emilia-Romagna. Its symbol is the Trepponti, a unique bridge with several flights of steps. Comacchio is surrounded by lagoons and salt marshes, where you can watch birds, including flamingos. A good choice for those seeking nature and a completely different atmosphere. 🏰 8. Castell'Arquato — Medieval Italy without the decorations Stone streets, towers, a fortress, and a square with historic buildings—it's easy to imagine life in a medieval town here. The main landmarks are the Collegiata di Santa Maria and Rocca Viscontea. Castell'Arquato is further from Bologna, so it's worth planning your trip in advance, as public transportation may require transfers. Most towns are conveniently visited by train, but for smaller borgos, you should check the buses and return schedules separately. This is especially true for Dozza, Brisighella, and Castell'Arquato. Emilia-Romagna is much more diverse than it seems at first glance: in a single trip, you can see Byzantine art, Renaissance palaces, medieval fortresses, and lagoons with flamingos. And all this within a single region. ❤️

#ferrara #castle #travel #italy #daytrip Castello Estense is the first thing you notice when you arrive in Ferrara's city centre. It's huge. It looms over the square like something from a storybook. Inside, it's not what you might expect. It's more about the building itself – the moat, the towers, the dungeons – than lavish rooms. The medieval dungeons are genuine and atmospheric. Watch your head – I bumped mine twice. The tower climb is the best part. It costs an extra €2 and is 122 steps up, but the panoramic view over the whole city makes it worth every step. If you have the MyFE card (€20 for 2 days, €22 for 3 days, or €25 for 6 days) and are combining it with other attractions in the city, it's absolutely worth going in – the tower climb is free with the card. But if you're paying €12 just for the castle alone, it's a bit pricey for what's inside. The view from the outside is almost as impressive. My advice? Get the MyFE card, go in, and definitely pay the extra €2 for the tower (or it's free with the MyFE card). If you're short on time or budget, admire it from the square and spend your money on lunch instead. 📍 Castello Estense – Piazza della Cittadella, Ferrara 🕒 Daily: 10:00–18:00 (closed Tuesdays) 🎟️ €12 (castle only) + €2 for the tower – tower free with MyFE card 🚆 30 minutes from Bologna by train, €5.50 each way – 20-minute walk from the station 💡 The MyFE card is great value if you're visiting other museums in Ferrara A stunning view from the top – and a stunning view from the square too. ✨

When we arranged a home swap with a family in Bologna this summer, we didn’t know much about the city. But I’d always wanted to visit Italy, and Bologna is a university city that is well situated between other Italian cities. It was our home base as we explored Florence, Venice, Modena, and Ferrara. We also fell in love with Bologna’s arcades, deep reds, and slow-paced streets, not to mention its incredible public library.

#easytravelpost Everyone takes the high-speed train straight from Milan to Venice, but they are skipping the most authentic historical cities right on the exact same train line! If you want Roman ruins, Renaissance masterpieces, and medieval castles without the insane tourist crowds, you need to try this route. 📍 Brescia: This city is a complete architectural shock. You can walk from the perfectly preserved Roman ruins at the Capitolium straight into a futuristic, driverless metro system. Sitting at Piazza della Loggia for a coffee costs half of what it does in Milan. 📍 Verona: Yes, it is famous for Juliet's balcony, but the real magic is elsewhere. Standing in front of the massive Arena di Verona (older than the Colosseum!) or watching the sunset over the river from the Castelvecchio bridge is unmatched. 📍 Vicenza: The ultimate architectural flex. The entire city was shaped by the Renaissance genius Andrea Palladio. Walking under the massive arches of the Basilica Palladiana in the main square feels like you are on a movie set, but you share it mostly with locals riding their bikes, not tour groups. 📍 Ferrara: Known as the city of bicycles. It has a massive, perfectly preserved brick castle with a real water moat right in the middle of town (Castello Estense). Don't miss the Palazzo dei Diamanti—a palace where the walls are carved to look like thousands of stone diamonds! 🚆 The Hack: You don't need expensive high-speed tickets for this. The cheap regional Trenitalia trains connect all these cities for just a few euros. Have you ever skipped a famous tourist city to explore the smaller towns nearby? 🗺️🚆 Let me know in the comments! #underratedspots #italybytrain #brescia #vicenza #ferrara #verona #slowtraveling

Ferrara is just a 30-minute train ride from Bologna, making it an effortless day trip. Spend your morning exploring the iconic Castello Estense, then head to the square right next door for lunch. Hosteria Savonarola is perfectly situated on the piazza, directly overlooking the castle. Their four-course set lunch (as of summer 2026) is a remarkable deal at €33. The experience begins with local cured meats, followed by a duo of pastas served on a single plate: pumpkin-filled pasta with meat sauce and a traditional local pasta pie that masterfully balances sweet and savory notes. Both are exceptional. Next, enjoy a flavorful spicy sausage served with creamy mashed potatoes. For dessert, indulge in the 'Tenerina'—a decadent chocolate cake paired with silky mascarpone cheese. A half-liter of house red wine is just €6. For a local finish, try an espresso 'corretto' (an espresso “corrected” with a splash of spirits) starting at €2—it packs a surprisingly pleasant punch. Service is efficient yet unhurried, so you can truly savor the atmosphere. In the afternoon, there is plenty more to discover—the cathedral, the city walls, local museums, or simply wandering through the historic streets. A four-course gourmet feast in a prime location for only €33—now that’s a bargain! 📍 Hosteria Savonarola – Piazza Savonarola, Ferrara (next to the castle) 🚆 30 minutes from Bologna by train 🍝 Set lunch: €33 (four courses, drinks not included) 🍷 Wine (0.5l): €6 ☕ Espresso 'corretto' from €2 📞 Book ahead for a table in the square

If there is one landmark you simply cannot miss in Ferrara Old Town, it is the magnificent Cattedrale di San Giorgio, better known as Ferrara Cathedral. Standing proudly in the heart of the city, this is Ferrara's main church and one of its most important historical monuments. No matter which direction you approach from, sooner or later you'll find yourself standing in front of its impressive façade wondering how people managed to build something so grand nearly nine centuries ago. Built in the 12th century, the cathedral is famous for its spectacular white marble façade, which combines Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance elements into one architectural masterpiece. Above the main porch stands a statue of Saint George, the patron saint of Ferrara, while intricate bas-reliefs depict scenes from the Last Judgment. The cathedral's bell tower, designed by renowned Renaissance architect Biagio Rossetti, remains famously unfinished. Inside, visitors can admire richly decorated Baroque chapels, artworks by masters such as Guercino, and even the tomb of Pope Urban III. The adjoining museum contains centuries of religious treasures, including sculptures, tapestries, and sacred art. At least, that's what you'll discover if you read the guidebooks. What you probably won't find online is the completely unexpected thriller movie that my brother and I somehow starred in during our visit. It all started perfectly normally. As experienced church visitors, we generally follow one simple rule: If other tourists are going inside, it's probably safe to do the same. This strategy had worked wonderfully throughout Europe. Until Ferrara. When we entered the cathedral, there were a few tourists scattered around. Some were quietly admiring the architecture, while others were kneeling in prayer at various locations inside the church. That was actually the first thing that caught my attention. Throughout our travels, we had visited countless churches and cathedrals, but here I noticed people kneeling and praying in seemingly random spots throughout the building. Interesting. But certainly not alarming. At least not yet. As always, we wandered around quietly admiring the interior. Then the clock struck 12 noon. Almost immediately, I noticed something strange. The tourists had vanished. Not gradually. Not one by one. Gone. I looked around. My brother looked around. We looked at each other. "Where did everyone go?" he whispered. An excellent question. The cathedral suddenly felt much larger and much quieter. Then we heard it. A loud voice echoing through the church. An elderly woman was shouting in Italian somewhere nearby. At first, I assumed it might be the elderly lady we had seen outside the cathedral earlier. Perhaps the voice was coming from the square. I could not have been more wrong. Suddenly, an angry Italian woman appeared seemingly out of nowhere. She pointed directly at us. Then she started speaking rapidly in Italian. Very rapidly. The only problem was that neither of us understood a single word. Before we could even process what was happening, she marched over to a shelf of candles. Then came the noise. CLANG! She grabbed several candles. BANG! They landed inside a large metal collection box. CRASH! The sound echoed throughout the cathedral like a dramatic sound effect from a suspense film. Meanwhile, she continued speaking loudly in Italian and repeatedly pointing toward a specific spot inside the church. Then something even stranger happened. My brother suddenly bent forward as though he were attending Mass. I stared at him. "What are you doing?" I whispered. He didn't answer. Instead, he gave me a look that clearly translated to: "Just do it." So I awkwardly copied him. At that moment, I genuinely wondered whether we had accidentally wandered onto the set of The Da Vinci Code. Perhaps Tom Hanks would appear around the next corner. Perhaps we had unknowingly interrupted some sacred ritual. Perhaps there was a hidden passage beneath the floor. My imagination was working overtime. I briefly considered making a run for the main entrance and dragging my brother along with me. Unfortunately, the woman immediately noticed. Another burst of rapid Italian followed. Then she pointed firmly toward the exact same location. Clearly, escaping was not part of the plan. So we stayed. After what felt like an eternity of being pointed at, redirected, and silently wondering what on earth was happening, the woman suddenly motioned for us to follow her. Then she turned around and started walking deeper into the cathedral. Clank. Clank. Clank. The sound of her shoes echoed across the vast interior, bouncing off the stone floors and centuries-old walls. In a church that had mysteriously emptied itself of tourists just moments earlier, every step seemed unnaturally loud. My brother and I exchanged nervous glances before reluctantly following behind. At that point, it felt less like sightseeing and more like we had accidentally wandered into the opening scene of a mystery thriller. The statues suddenly looked more dramatic. The paintings appeared more mysterious. Even the shadows seemed darker than they had an hour earlier. Clank. Clank. Clank. The sound continued as we walked past chapels, religious paintings, and eventually the large crucifix. I was mentally reviewing every possible offence we might have committed. Had we stood somewhere we shouldn't? Walked in the wrong direction? Broken some unwritten church rule known only to locals? Or perhaps all those extra servings of tiramisu throughout Italy had finally caught up with me spiritually? At that moment, every possibility seemed equally plausible. Meanwhile, the woman kept walking ahead, occasionally turning around to make sure we were still following. Which somehow made the entire situation even more suspenseful. For a brief moment, I genuinely wondered whether we had stumbled into a secret chapter of Angels & Demons. Perhaps a hidden chamber was about to open. Perhaps there was an ancient manuscript hidden somewhere beneath the altar. Perhaps we were about to discover a centuries-old mystery. Instead, we simply continued following the increasingly intimidating soundtrack of: Clank. Clank. Clank. The closer we got to the main altar, the more convinced I became that we had somehow done something wrong. Then, just as my imagination reached maximum thriller-movie levels, the mystery was finally solved. The woman pointed toward a door behind the cathedral. The main entrance had already been closed. She wasn't leading us to a secret ritual. She wasn't reporting us to the Vatican. She wasn't demanding repentance for excessive tiramisu consumption. She was simply trying to tell two clueless tourists to leave through the back exit. That was it. The entire time, she had been helping us. Looking back, she was probably wondering why we looked so terrified. And honestly, if she had known the elaborate thriller plot unfolding inside my head, she probably would have laughed even harder than my brother did afterwards. But Ferrara wasn't finished with us yet. Because later that same evening, we discovered that some city buses stop running ridiculously early. Our route's final service departed at 8:28 pm. Not 8:30 pm. Not 9 pm. 8:28 pm. Very specific. And very inconvenient. Suddenly we found ourselves stranded in the Old Town. No Bolt. No Uber. And despite having purchased an Italian SIM card, we couldn't remember the number because it wasn't visible on our phones and the receipt had long since disappeared. Naturally. I tried calling a taxi company. The result? An automated Italian voice message. Of course. At that point, walking back to our actual hotel on the outskirts of Ferrara was starting to look like the only option. Unfortunately, after a full day of sightseeing, unexpected cathedral adventures, and enough walking to qualify for an endurance event, neither of us was particularly excited by that prospect. Then I remembered reading somewhere that local taxis could be booked via SMS. So I took a chance. Sent a message. Waited. And hoped for the best. To improve our chances of being found, I used a hotel in the Old Town as the pickup location since it was a much easier landmark than trying to explain exactly where we were standing. A few minutes later, my phone rang. Now, under normal circumstances, receiving a phone call in Italy would not be particularly remarkable. Except there was one small problem. The caller was Italian. And my Italian vocabulary at that point consisted mainly of: Buongiorno. Grazie. Prego. Aperol Spritz. Not exactly enough to negotiate transportation logistics. I answered nervously. The person on the other end immediately started speaking rapid-fire Italian. I froze. My brain searched desperately through every Italian word I knew. After approximately half a second, I deployed my entire linguistic arsenal: "Sì!" The voice continued speaking. I replied again with confidence that was completely unsupported by actual understanding: "Sì! Sì!" To this day, I have no idea what the driver asked. Maybe he was confirming the pickup location. Maybe he was asking what colour shirt I was wearing. Maybe he was asking whether I had accidentally become the owner of his taxi company. We'll never know. But apparently my repeated "Sì!" was sufficient because a few minutes later, success! A taxi appeared right in front of the hotel exactly as requested. I have no idea what the driver thought when two tourists emerged from a hotel where they clearly weren't staying and immediately asked to be driven to another hotel on the outskirts of Ferrara. Perhaps he thought we were changing hotels. Perhaps he remembered the phone call and realised he had been communicating with someone whose Italian vocabulary could fit on a Post-it note. Perhaps he wisely decided not to ask questions. Either way, we weren't about to complain. At that moment, the taxi felt less like transportation and more like divine intervention. After surviving a mysterious cathedral encounter, an unexpected public transport crisis, and a day full of surprises, simply sitting comfortably in the back seat felt like a major victory. Ferrara may be famous for Renaissance history, beautiful architecture, and excellent food. But for us, it will always be remembered as the city where an angry Italian church attendant accidentally turned a cathedral visit into a suspense thriller, followed by a transportation adventure solved by a text message, blind optimism, and a strategically deployed "Sì!" And somehow, that's exactly the kind of travel story that ends up being more memorable than anything in the guidebook. 📍 Address Cattedrale di San Giorgio (Ferrara Cathedral) Piazza della Cattedrale, 44121 Ferrara, Italy A magnificent blend of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture—and apparently the perfect setting for two tourists to briefly convince themselves they were starring in a Dan Brown novel. ⛪😄🇮🇹🚕📖

By the time we reached Ferrara, our final stop before heading to Rome and eventually flying back to Singapore, we had developed a very sophisticated travel strategy: If the weather is unbearably hot, find gelato immediately. 🍦😂 And trust me, the weather that day was absolutely broiling. So while wandering around town in search of relief from the Italian summer sun, we stumbled upon: 📍 Panna & Caffè Viale Cavour 98, 44121 Ferrara, Italy At first glance, it looked like a gelato shop. Then we stepped inside. And realised it was actually a temple dedicated to all things cold, sweet, and dangerously tempting. 😍 They didn't just sell gelato. They sold desserts involving gelato. Desserts involving ice cream. Cakes. Frozen treats. And various combinations of all the above that probably required a team of engineers to design. 😂 As I was scanning the display, something caught my eye. There it was. A lone survivor. The last piece of tiramisu, peeking out from behind the glass cabinet as if whispering: "You know you're going to order me." And honestly, it wasn't wrong. 😌 At this point in Italy, ordering tiramisu had become less of a choice and more of a responsibility. The café itself was surprisingly spacious, with a nostalgic 1990s cafeteria vibe that instantly made the place feel comfortable and familiar. Then I discovered why. Panna & Caffè has been around since 1993. That's more than three decades of serving Ferrara's residents and visitors. In food business terms, that's basically legendary status. The tiramisu here was slightly different from the versions I had enjoyed in Treviso. Treviso-style tiramisu tends to be incredibly creamy and rich, whereas this version had a bit more cake structure to it. Was it different? Yes. Was it delicious? Also yes. 😂 Let's be honest—I've yet to meet a tiramisu I didn't like. Meanwhile, my brother focused on what he does best: gelato. After a few spoonfuls, he gave the universal traveler's sign of approval—continuing to eat without speaking. Always a good sign. 🍨 What also caught our attention was the constant flow of customers. People were continuously coming in and out, grabbing desserts, gelato, coffee, and catching up with friends. Clearly, this wasn't just another café. This was one of those local institutions that had become part of everyday life in Ferrara. The kind of place where generations probably have their favourite flavour, favourite table, and favourite dessert. So if you ever find yourself in Ferrara, sweating under the Italian sun and desperately seeking something cold, sweet, and comforting, make a stop at Panna & Caffè. You might come for the gelato. You might stay for the cakes. Or, if you're anything like me, you'll somehow end up finding the last piece of tiramisu again. 😂🍰🍦🇮🇹✨ #gelato #tiramisu #ferrara #italy

I'll be completely honest: before this trip, I had never even heard of Ferrara. 😂 When my brother announced that Ferrara was on our Italy itinerary, my reaction was somewhere between, "Where?" and "Are you sure that's a real place?" But that's how we usually travel together. Italy is his favourite country, while Holland is mine, so whenever we visit either of them, we each get to play travel planner and surprise the other with towns we've never considered before. And this time, Ferrara turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. 📍 Castello Estense (Castello di San Michele) Largo Castello, 1, 44121 Ferrara, Italy The city's most famous landmark is undoubtedly the magnificent Castello Estense, also known as St. Michael's Castle. And what a castle it is. Right in the middle of Ferrara stands this enormous medieval fortress, surrounded by a moat and guarded by four imposing corner towers. It looks exactly like the kind of castle you would draw as a child when someone asked you to sketch a castle. 🏰 What impressed me most was how incredibly well preserved it is. The moat water was surprisingly clean, the walls remain remarkably intact, and the entire structure still dominates the city centre just as it has done for centuries. Then I discovered something even more impressive. The castle was built in 1385. That's not a typo. While some of us struggle to keep our mobile phones alive for more than three years, this castle has been standing proudly for over 640 years. 😂 Think about that for a moment. This castle has survived wars, political upheavals, economic crises, changing rulers, and countless generations of visitors armed with cameras and selfie sticks. Yet here it still stands. I couldn't help imagining how advanced and impressive it must have looked back in the late 14th century. If it's still turning heads today, it must have been absolutely mind-blowing in medieval times. Even better, restoration and conservation works continue to ensure that future generations can enjoy it too. My brother and I explored pretty much every corner of the castle grounds that was available free of charge. We wandered around the exterior, crossed the bridges, admired the moat, and spent far longer taking photographs than we probably should have. There are ticketed sections as well, including access to parts of the interior and the towers. But here's the thing. By this stage of our holiday, I had already climbed enough towers, bell towers, church towers, and random ancient staircases to qualify for a medieval fitness programme. 😂 So when faced with the choice between: A. Climbing yet another tower or B. Finding gelato and iced tea The decision was immediate. No consultation required. No debate necessary. Gelato won by a landslide. 🍦😌 After all, Ferrara was our final stop before heading to Rome and flying back to Singapore. At that point, preserving my energy for eating seemed like a far wiser investment than voluntarily exercising inside a 14th-century castle. So while some visitors conquered the towers, I proudly conquered another gelato instead. No regrets. Ferrara may not have the fame of Rome, Florence, or Venice, but that's exactly what makes it special. It's beautiful, relaxed, full of history, and refreshingly free from overwhelming crowds. And if you're looking for a charming Italian city where a 640-year-old castle still watches over everyday life, Ferrara might just surprise you the same way it surprised me. 🏰✨🇮🇹🍦

While wandering around Ferrara, I noticed something unusual. Among the endless parade of all-you-can-eat sushi buffets, one restaurant stood out like a spicy beacon calling my name: 📍 Ramen Hideo Ferrara Via Carlo Mayr 28, 44121 Ferrara, Italy Now, if you've read any of my food adventures, you'll know that spotting a ramen shop in Europe is basically my version of finding treasure. 🍜😂 The moment we stepped inside, it felt less like Ferrara and more like we had accidentally wandered into Akihabara. The place was bursting with manga posters, colourful decorations, bright neon lights, Japanese signs, and enough visual excitement to keep your eyes busy while waiting for your food. If someone blindfolded me and dropped me there, I'd probably assume I was somewhere in Tokyo rather than a medieval Italian city. Even better, they had Japanese staff who spoke Japanese, Italian, and some English fluently. That's always reassuring when ordering Japanese food because you immediately think, "Okay, these people know what they're doing." 😌 Then came the first surprise. Free garlic crackers. And... Free chilli sauce. FREE. In Europe. I nearly fell off my chair. 😂 Considering the exchange rate between the Euro and Singapore Dollar, anything complimentary instantly feels twice as generous. But the real reason Ramen Hideo impressed me was something I hadn't encountered in any other ramen restaurant during my 35-day journey across 12 European countries. They let you build your own ramen. Game over. My excitement levels immediately became unreasonable. Naturally, I started customising like a contestant on a cooking competition. My ramen ended up with: 🥚 Marinated egg 🧈 Marinated tofu 🌶️ Spicy garlic chilli (double portion because moderation is overrated) 🍤 Fried ebi furai At that point, the bowl was becoming less of a ramen and more of a personal life statement. 😂 Meanwhile, my brother looked at the customisation options and decided that making decisions was simply too much work. Instead, he chose the restaurant's bestseller: 🍜 Spicy Chicken Yakisoba And honestly? Great choice. Throughout our entire holiday, this was the first time we'd seen spicy chicken yakisoba on a menu. The noodles were beautifully stir-fried, savoury, slightly smoky, and absolutely delicious. How do I know? Because I shamelessly stole some from his plate for "research purposes." 😇 For drinks, I ordered their lemon iced tea. Now, much like several "iced teas" I've encountered across Europe, I remain unconvinced there was much actual tea involved. 😂 But who cares? It was loaded with freshly pressed lemon, mint leaves, crushed ice, and tasted incredibly refreshing. Paired with spicy ramen, it was basically summer in a glass. The food disappeared quickly. Very quickly. In fact, had we not already made plans to continue our culinary adventures at L'Antica Pizzeria Da Michele later that day, we probably would have ordered even more food. Yes, Ferrara has a Da Michele branch too. Apparently this legendary pizza empire keeps following us around Italy. 😂 Unfortunately, we missed their branches when we were in Trieste and Treviso, so this was becoming a recurring travel regret. Still, no complaints. Because at the end of the day, after spending weeks eating sushi, pizza, pasta, tiramisu, gelato, and enough carbohydrates to power a small village... I discovered something important. If forced to choose between sushi, pizza, and ramen... 🌶️ I'll still pick the spiciest ramen every single time. No hesitation. No debate. No regrets. #hellonewyear Stopping for breakfast at Leon d’Oro in Ferrara turned into one of those quietly satisfying travel moments. The café sits right in front of the Cathedral, and the view feels almost too good for such an easy stop. I ordered a coffee and a pistachio croissant, fresh and not overly sweet, and the total was only €3.20, which felt surprisingly fair for this location. Sitting on the terrace, it was easy to slow down and watch the square wake up little by little. Leon d’Oro has been part of Ferrara for decades, and it still feels like a place locals genuinely use. The atmosphere is relaxed, not rushed, even as people come and go. What I liked most was how naturally it fit into the morning — no planning, no waiting, just a simple stop that worked. It’s the kind of place you remember later, not because it was fancy, but because it felt right in the moment. A small pause that made the walk through Ferrara feel even better afterward. #Ferrara #Italy #yanaberg_italy

#hellonewyear Ferrara doesn’t try to impress loudly. Evenings here are slow and thoughtful, when the streets calm down and dinner becomes a ritual. You start with a simple, well-made pizza, the kind that doesn’t need explanations. Then a small glass of cold limoncello, sharp and refreshing, perfect after a warm day. And then comes what truly belongs to this city — traditional ravioli, known in Ferrara as cappellacci di zucca. Large, handmade pasta filled with sweet pumpkin, usually served with butter and sage. This dish dates back to the 15th century, created during the time of the Este family and once served at the Renaissance court. Sweet, delicate, comforting — and completely local. This is not fast food or tourist cuisine. It’s food with memory, eaten slowly, in a city that still knows how to pause. #Ferrara #Italy #yanaberg_italy

#hellohalloween Rising from the heart of Ferrara with its formidable brick towers and encircling moat, the Castello Estense isn't just a castle; it's the dramatic, beating heart of the city's history. My solo trip here was a journey into the world of the powerful Este family, a day of dungeons, drawbridges, and decadent halls, all explored at my own perfect pace. My Perfect Solo Itinerary: A Day of Dynasty and Drama 10:00 AM - A Grand Entrance I started my day in the vast Piazza Castello, simply standing back to admire the castle's imposing presence. Walking across the drawbridge and through the gatehouse, I felt a genuine thrill. I grabbed an audio guide—my essential solo companion—and stepped into the courtyard, ready to begin my exploration. 10:30 AM - Dungeons, Dukes, and Daring Escapes The audio guide brilliantly led me through the castle's layered history. I began deep below, in the dungeons, where the tragic stories of Ugo and Parisina—lovers executed by the Duke—gave the ancient stones a poignant weight. As a solo visitor, I could linger in these somber spaces, feeling the history without distraction. From there, I ascended to the light-filled world of the Este family. I wandered through the Ducal Apartments, the Salon of Games, and the stunning, frescoed Loggia degli Aranci (The Orange Garden). Having the freedom to pause in each room, admiring the intricate ceilings and imagining the Renaissance court life, was a luxury. 1. 00 PM - A Solo Lunch with a View After the castle, I picked up supplies from a local salumeria—some fresh bread, salame da sugo, and a piece of coppia ferrarese. I found a sunny spot on a bench overlooking the castle's moat for a simple, perfect, and budget-friendly solo feast. 2. 30 PM - A Stroll Through History The castle is perfectly located for further solo exploration. I spent the afternoon wandering the straight, bike-filled streets of the Renaissance Addizione Erculea and getting lost in the medieval quarter that surrounds the cathedral, all within a few minutes' walk. Solo Traveler Tips I Discovered: · The Audio Guide is a Must: It brings the rooms to life with stories and context, making you feel like you have a personal historian by your side. · Look for the Details: Notice the painted ceilings, the marble fireplaces, and the views of Ferrara from the loggia. Solo travel lets you appreciate these finer points. · Climb the Towers: The views from the Torre dei Leoni over the red-tiled rooftops of Ferrara are an unforgettable reward. · Ferrara is a Walker's City: The entire historic center is flat, compact, and pedestrian-friendly, making it ideal for independent discovery.

I stopped at Pasticceria Leon D’Oro in the main square, right in front of the cathedral, for a croissant and coffee — an ideal spot to soak in the atmosphere. I then wandered through medieval streets, admired the Este Castle, and explored the hidden corners of this peaceful city. The city’s quiet streets and traditional architecture make it perfect for photos and simply enjoying the day. Even at the end of the day, your room or café seat feels like a calm retreat. 👌🏼Tips for Your Visit: 🛏️Stay in Mestre for a cheaper, convenient base. 🚆Train Travel: Book via Trip.com; trains from Mestre to Ferrara take about 1.5–2 hours with a transfer. 🍏Before Exploring: Stop at the Lidl near the station for snacks or drinks. 🥐Café Recommendation: Pasticceria Leon D’Oro in the main square is perfect for coffee and people-watching. 🏰What to See: Este Castle, historic streets, city walls, and narrow lanes that feel authentically local. #europeonbudget #museums #citydaytours Trip to Estense Castle, Ferrara Visiting the Estense Castle (Castello Estense) in Ferrara feels like stepping into a living medieval story. Rising proudly in the heart of the city, this brick fortress has guarded centuries of history since 1385. Once the residence of the powerful Este family, the castle today is one of the most iconic landmarks in northern Italy. Here’s a detailed review and important things to know when exploring this historic treasure: 1. The Architecture & Atmosphere The castle immediately captures attention with its red-brick walls, massive towers, and surrounding moat filled with water. It’s a rare sight to see such a well-preserved fortress right in the city center. The moment you cross the bridge, you feel transported back to a time of dukes, nobles, and Renaissance grandeur. 2. The Este Family Legacy This castle was not just a fortress but a symbol of power. The Este family, one of Italy’s most influential dynasties, ruled Ferrara from here. Their stories of politics, intrigues, and patronage of the arts echo through the halls. Walking inside, you can sense both the opulence of court life and the darker moments of imprisonment in its dungeons. 3. The Interior Experience Inside, you’ll discover frescoed halls, grand salons, and hidden corners that reveal the castle’s dual role as both palace and fortress. The Ducal Apartments display beautiful Renaissance decorations, while the dungeons beneath the castle hold chilling reminders of its past, with cells that once held prisoners accused of betrayal or scandal. 4. Views from the Towers Climbing up to the castle towers rewards you with sweeping views of Ferrara’s UNESCO-listed old town. From above, the city’s medieval grid and terracotta rooftops spread out like a painting. It’s one of the best vantage points in Ferrara. 5. Why It’s Special Estense Castle is not just a museum, but a time capsule of Ferrara’s identity. Unlike many castles frozen in time, this one feels alive, integrated with the rhythm of the city around it.
