It has a completely different atmosphere from Rome, Florence or Venice — and that's exactly what makes it interesting. ✅ THE GOOD: Genoa feels noticeably quieter than Italy's big tourist cities, and if you plan your route well, one full day is enough to see the main highlights. Prices also felt more affordable, especially compared with other major Italian destinations. And if you love seafood, you're going to LOVE this place. The historic centre is full of beautiful squares, monuments, fountains and impressive palaces, but for me, the real highlight was the port and the sea. Don't forget to add Christopher Columbus' House to your list. ➥ And here's one of my favourite discoveries: #SkylineScape. At the port, there's a lookout that costs around €6 per person and gives you what I think is one of the best views of Genoa. You can see the colourful buildings, historic centre, port and Mediterranean all from above. Definitely worth adding to your itinerary. ❎ THE NOT-SO-GOOD: I found some areas of the city less clean than I expected, particularly around parts of the historic centre. The city is also quite hilly, so comfortable shoes are definitely a must. And if you're planning to stay for more than 2 days, I'd recommend using Genoa as a base to explore the surrounding Ligurian coast — otherwise, you may find yourself with too much time for the city itself. 👨🏻⚖️ My verdict: Genova is underrated, authentic and very different from the classic Italian itinerary. When the doors open, you step out onto a massive stone terrace with the absolute best view in town. You just sit, look down, and watch the whole city – the old rooftops, the harbour – spread out in front of you. There's no real menu. They'll just ask if you want red or white, then list what they have open. If that sounds intimidating, don't worry – the staff are friendly and will help you pick. Soft drinks, beer, and a few cocktails are also available. The evening pre-dinner spread is where the magic happens. They bring out a mountain of snacks: fresh bread, crisps, salami, two types of ham, two types of cheese, a little bowl of honey, and spicy toasted bread. The best thing was a warm, paper-thin crispy flatbread covered in melted cream cheese and fresh pesto. Bliss! Together it's honestly a whole meal in itself. Inside the bar is tiny – just a counter to pay. Everyone is out on the terrace for the view. It gets packed quickly and you can't reserve, so it's first come, first served.
