Scenes for the film were shot in the iconic courtyard corridors and now these stunning examples of stone masonry are world famous - bringing a whole new crowd of tourists to this amazing city and cathedral. Th corridors square off one of the garden courtyards and feature amazing stonework roofing, stain glass windows and beautiful stone flooring. The corridors are magical and even if you haven’t seen the films you can’t help but marvel at the craftsmanship that went into making such beautiful rooms. The corridors can get quite busy so try and get to the cathedral early and head straight here, it is towards the back of the cathedral. Here is how we spent a perfect day exploring two of the UK's best cities. 👇 📍 Part 1: Gloucester (The Magic Phase) Gloucester Cathedral: If you are a Harry Potter fan, this is non-negotiable! The cloisters here are the corridors of Hogwarts. Walking through them feels surreal. ⚡️ The House of the Tailor of Gloucester: Just a short walk from the cathedral is the cutest shop ever. This is the actual building Beatrix Potter based her story on! It’s a museum and shop full of Peter Rabbit nostalgia. 🐰🧥 📍 Part 2: Bath (The Chill Phase) Hop over to Bath (about an hour away) to finish the day. BrewDog Bath: After all that walking, we needed good food. The city Is easily accessible from London and makes a good daytrip, it’s also well connected to Cardiff, Bristol and Birmingham. The city itself is famous for its long history and is a treasure trove of architectural wonders from the infamous cathedral down to wood framed buildings from the Tudor period. The city’s center has plenty of attractions including churches, shopping center and various museums dedicated to the city and surrounding area. The cathedral is a must visit and it’s free entry (optional donations) along with the rejuvenated quays area. This offers outlet shopping and a good range of restaurants. You can also follow the canals from here and see some of the city’s industrial history. If you’re into Harry Potter then this is for you, if you’re just a big history buff like me then this is also for you! The stunning Gloucester cathedral is one of the most immaculate architectural gems in England and has quite rightly been the set of many films and tv shows, most notably three of the Harry Potter films. The world famous cloisters and courtyards are instantly recognisable from the films and draw big crowds. The stain glass windows are some of the most ornate in the country and the cathedral roof is really unbelievable. The cathedral has been very well restored and about 80% of the buildings footprint is open to visitors. There’s also a lot of information available about the buildings history, who is buried there and the various uses over its time. The cathedral asks for donations on entry or exit but these are not compulsory, so technically the cathedral is free to visit! Donations help restore the cathedral but due to its religious nature it is not a forced donation. Purchases from the small gift shop also help to subsidise restoration! When mentioning the Cotswolds, the first towns that likely come to mind are Bourton-on-the-Water and then Bibury. Since many tours and some self-guided routes often connect Shakespeare’s hometown Stratford-upon-Avon with Oxford, visiting these two places is more convenient, especially as Bourton-on-the-Water is already well known. As for Broadway and Chipping Campden, located on the northwest and northern edges of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and without rail connections, they are naturally harder to reach. However, the “relatively off-the-beaten-path” nature of Broadway and Chipping Campden means we don’t have to struggle with crowds, and the rural towns offer a purer countryside charm. 1. Travel highlights Chipping Campden has a market dating back to the early 17th century, built with the honey-colored stone typical of the Cotswolds. The roofs are supported by wooden herringbone beams rather than the arched wooden beams common in large-span European buildings. The high street in Chipping Campden retains medieval-style architecture, reportedly little changed since the 14th century. However, the street itself is still paved with asphalt. The town hall in Chipping Campden, located next to the market, is very small but charming. Opposite the town hall is a library, and nearby are free public restrooms, making it very visitor-friendly. To visit the town’s church, you need to leave the high street and go along Church Street. The church, named St. James, also has a honey-colored exterior and a rather simple interior. It is well lit, creating a bright and airy atmosphere. Nearby are a barn museum and a very “Cotswolds” thatched cottage. Broadway’s main sights are still along the high street. Unlike some Cotswolds towns, Broadway’s high street is wider, lined on both sides with horse chestnut trees decorated with red flower towers, while the honey-colored buildings are partially hidden by the street trees. If you visit in early May, you can experience the dreamy atmosphere created by wisteria in Broadway. The honey-colored cottages, draped with strong vines and hanging purple flower clusters like grapes, seem to lose their doors and windows, becoming fairy dwellings. Of course, Chipping Campden also has some wisteria. Broadway Tower is located on the outskirts of town and requires a hike uphill or a drive along a fairly long mountain road. The walking route passes many pastures where you can warmly greet the sheep “sampling” or enjoying a feast. 2. Transportation Driving may be the more suitable option, but taking the bus is also possible. From or to Stratford-upon-Avon, you can take Stagecoach buses running between Stratford-upon-Avon and Chipping Campden and Broadway. You can download the bus company’s app in advance and choose a “Day Rider” or similar one-day ticket. Although it is pricey, it allows unlimited rides. In theory, the day ticket is valid until 4 AM the next day, but in practice, once the last bus of the day has run, there is little chance to use the ticket further. The Cotswolds span the counties of Gloucestershire, Somerset, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, and Oxfordshire, covering a large area that is difficult to explore all at once. Therefore, it’s important to choose Cotswolds towns that suit your interests and itinerary. Chipping Campden and Broadway are relatively close to Stratford-upon-Avon and can be visited together. Also, the swans in Stratford are quite interesting. When fed, they compete aggressively; if they see someone standing by the water, they swim over gracefully to beg; if no one feeds them, they leave sulkily. Of course, it is recommended not to feed wild animals while traveling abroad. In Stratford-upon-Avon, you can also look for the rare gold postbox and admire the great writer and the characters he created.

Pathetic central hotel Cheltenham

Gloucester is a glorious town that is famous for it’s iconic cathedral, but there is so much more to do. It is a very family friendly city and I find it has something for everyone from shopping and dining to antique hunting and vintage shopping. It is heavily pedestrianised in the center so it’s very safe for exploring and you can see most of the cities highlights without having to worry about traffic. You have an amazing mix of historical buildings along with modern redevelopments such as the Gloucester keys retail area and the refurbished canal system. There are great restaurants and cafes and a real focus on fresh, local produce. It feels like you step back in time as you can still find traditional butchers, dairies and green grocers - all with local products. it’s a great day out for all the family even if you don’t do the Cathedral, but you can’t come all this way and not go in so add it to your list too! Glocester Cathedral is one of the most inspiring religious buildings in the United Kingdom and a highlight for me is the stained galls windows. Incredible examples of historical craftsmanship that have stood the test of time, keeping their vivid colours and unique beauty. The cathedral has some of the biggest windows I have ever seen along with smaller windows with more detail, often telling stories of historical figures who visited the church. There are tombs and graves in the cathedral for significant individuals of that era, there are stained glass windows next to them that help you understand the person, their life and the importance they had at the time. I love coming here to try and see what I can learn from the windows, the more I focus the more I notice - seeing details that help unlock the bigger picture of the windows. The town of Littledean is a gorgeous little down on the outskirts of the Forrest Of Dean In Gloucester, and it has a little secret. The old Littledean jail be found off the road up a little gravel path and it contains the history of crime through time. This is one of the most unique things I have ever stumbled across and was surprised by how unknown it was. The prison has been converted into a museum all about crime through time and the efforts to fight it, looking into policing and it’s history. The forecourt is full of various memorabilia including police cars, prison equipment and lots of historical warning signs from around the area. Inside there are rooms full of crime related memorabilia along with detailed stories about major crimes throughout British history . I was very hard to get anything approved so didn’t post any photos form inside but it is well worth the visit! Admission is $10 per person, and it is strongly recommended that children do not enter as it can be quite upsetting! Amongst the hotels I have been to, I think the Gloucester Robinswood Hotel, BW Signature Collection has to be in my current Top 3. The hotel is beautiful, very clean and that hallway is a marvel, and so many amenities, a gym. As a driver I also loved the fact that they had parking which accommodated for a lot of vehicles. I would definitely recommend this hotel to my friends and family.

The Forest of Dean is full of amazing surprises and is a lot more than the nature you would expect. I never thought I’d see an underground sculpture park, and then I discovered the clearwell caves. The cave system is a combination of iron ore mines that once dotted this landscape and powered the local economy. Underwater rivers eroded the rocks and made long cave systems that exposes the valuable ore in the rock. As the ore was mined out the cave and mine system became intertwined and expanded under the rolling hills and forests. Clearwell caves offers a fascinating and informative look at the mining industry along with the natural history of the caves and surrounding area. As an added bonus a temporary sculpture pair has been installed in the cave system, 70 sculptures from various artists line the underground walking trail. You can pick up a numbered guide at the ticket booth with all the information you need. Such an amazing idea that creates a really surreal underground experience! Entry costs around £12.50 for adults and £10 for children and it’s totally worth it! It’s fun for all the family. The caves are open 10-5 but are closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
