Elected European Capital of Culture in 2003, some facilities are still in place and give the city a certain originality. 1. The Schlossberg Nothing better to start your visit to Graz than to observe it from above! Direction the Schlossberg, a hill culminating at 123 meters and overlooking the city where you can enjoy a superb panorama. To get there from Graz city center, you have the following options: On foot from Schlossbergplatz square, allow about 30 minutes to climb the 260 steps By elevator, which will take you inside the hill By funicular, starting from the Place de l’Empereur François-Joseph to the summit. Schlossberg means “Castle Mountain”, because at the time, there was indeed a castle on the hill. Until the 19th century, the Schlossberg served as a military post and refuge for the inhabitants of Graz in the event of enemy attacks. Napoleonic troops never managed to take it. 2. The Main Square The Hauptplatz is the main square to see during your stay in Graz and the ideal starting point for doing some sightseeing. Designed in the Middle Ages to accommodate the market, it still remains the nerve center of the city today . I was back there two years ago .The beauty of it is that you never tire of the classic views, while always finding something new. In my case, the ARGOS building by Zaha Hadid had finally been completed and there's a Red Bull Racing car attached to the rocky walls of the Schloßberg. It is this long period of "preservation" that has miraculously preserved its Baroque frescoes, paintings, and precious collections to this day, making it one of the most authentic Baroque palaces in Europe. In the 17th century, Prince Eggenberg ordered the construction of the castle. The entire residence is filled with ingenious numerical metaphors: the four corner towers symbolize the four seasons, the 365 windows correspond to day and night, and the 24 main halls represent the twenty-four hours of the day. The square is perpetually filled with the aroma of the market, and locals chat leisurely, continuing Graz's relaxed pace of life. Climbing the hill along the path, the city's landmark clock tower silently overlooks the entire old town. Standing on the observation deck, the entire old town of Graz unfolds before your eyes. The ancient clock tower has inverted hands: the longer hand indicates the hour, and the shorter hand records the minutes. We were lucky enough to walk into the clock tower and see the massive, multi-ton core gear, which has remained intact and in operation since 1712. Afterwards, we walked along the Mur River, crossing one old bridge after another, taking in the panoramic views of Graz, both ancient and modern. 🌿Restaurant Rudolf|Stelmachic Flavors at the Castle's Edge After strolling through the castle and old town in the gentle twilight, we reserved the last vestiges of our journey for a delicious meal at Restaurant Rudolf, located next to Edenberg Castle. This long-established local restaurant and pub, nestled at the foot of the castle, is a favorite retreat for Graz locals. It combines traditional Stelmachic cuisine with a retro pub atmosphere, free from overly commercialized noise, offering only the most authentic and relaxed Austrian experience. As our journey drew to a close, we settled in to immerse ourselves in the classic local flavors: Steymark fried chicken, with its crispy exterior and juicy interior, is the city's signature dish, a bite bursting with the flavors of Central Europe. Paired with a glass of the local specialty, Gelber Muskateller white wine, its crisp, aromatic body and delicate sweetness perfectly balancing the richness of the meat, while its light and lingering fruity notes add a touch of elegance.
