Guildford travel guide and discussion

If you’re planning an autumn trip around the UK, Trip.com has just launched some seriously cheap rail fares with Northern and South Western Railway. The offers are available for travel between 9 September and 23 October, so it could be a great excuse for a spontaneous day trip or weekend away. 🍂 Some of the fares I spotted include: 🚆 Leeds → Manchester Victoria from £2 🚆 Manchester Victoria → Leeds from £2 🚆 Sheffield → Manchester Piccadilly from £2 🚆 Leeds → York from £2 And with South Western Railway, tickets start from just £3, with destinations including Guildford, Alton, Salisbury and Bournemouth. 💡 A couple of extra ways to save: New Trip.com users can claim 5% off train tickets, while existing users can get 2% off. There’s also £1 off when you spend £8+ on eligible multiple-date bookings in the app. For Northern, kids aged 5–15 can travel from £1, and up to two children under 5 can travel free with each paying adult. 👨👩👧👦 📍 Head to Trip.com, check the Deals section and search your route to see what fares are available for your dates. These are limited-time offers and availability varies, so I’d definitely have a look sooner rather than later. 💬 Where would you go for a £2 train ticket? 🚆🍁 #tripmoments #tripcom #traintravel #uktravel #traveldeals #cheaptravel #london #uktrips #daytrip #budgettravel #autumntravel

#summervacay While most visitors head to Guildford to see its medieval castle and delightful tulip gardens, I wholeheartedly recommend a stunning hiking trail that offers a true taste of tranquil English beauty! I explored this route alone in early May 2024, and with very few people around, it was incredibly peaceful – a truly "serene passing of time" experience. 🚶♀️✨ (Just a note: A fellow user commented that the flower fields have changed species this year, so if you're specifically hoping to see rapeseed flowers, please be aware to avoid disappointment!) The Route: Chantry Woods, St Martha's and Chilworth Manor Circular 🏞️ Located in Surrey, this circular hiking route beautifully blends enchanting woodlands, historic landmarks, and picturesque rural landscapes. It's approximately 8-10 kilometers long, falling into the easy-to-moderate difficulty range, with well-maintained paths. You can expect to complete it in about 2.5-4 hours. Route Highlights: Chantry Woods: A Green Fairytale! 🌲 Step into dense broadleaf forests that, in spring, are carpeted with wildflowers like bluebells and wild garlic. In autumn, they transform into a golden tunnel, with fallen leaves creating a soft, inviting carpet underfoot. St Martha's Church: Views from the Clouds! ⛪☁️ Perched high on a hill, St Martha's Church offers cloud-level vistas, providing panoramic views across Surrey and even distant glimpses of the London skyline. The ancient stone walls of the church, set against the wild beauty of the surroundings, create a truly atmospheric and memorable scene. This trail is a fantastic escape into nature, offering a peaceful and beautiful experience away from the crowds – perfect for anyone seeking that quintessential English countryside charm! #Guildford #UKTravel #Surrey #Hiking #ChantryWoods #StMarthas #EnglishCountryside #HiddenGems #TravelEngland #NatureEscape #PeacefulWalk #OutdoorAdventures 🇬🇧

My husband and I took a sunset Steam Dreams Pullman dining journey tonight, and it was truly the best experience ever; we'd give more than 5 stars if we could. The staff were phenomenal, treating us like VIPs from the moment we boarded. They took time to chat between courses, showing exceptional professionalism. The atmosphere was laid-back, and the food was simply delicious—worth every penny spent on tickets and extra drinks. This was our second Steam Dreams trip, and we’re already planning to do it again!

Before our trip, we were informed via email that due to the hot weather, we would be pulled by a diesel train instead of a steam engine as per Network Rail's requirements. This was very disappointing, though not Steam Dreams' fault. Later, we also learned that our train couldn't stop at Paignton station due to a fire caused by arsonists, so we had to continue to Kingswear for Dartmouth. Again, not SD's fault, but still disappointing. We were seated in H carriage, which, fortunately, had air conditioning as part of a trial. It worked excellently. The seats were very comfortable, and the staff were exceptionally attentive. They frequently offered tea and coffee, and while we had brought our own food and drinks, my husband tried the coffee and found it tasty—even though he's very particular. The snack boxes provided for both journeys were excellent, and the cream tea on the return trip was delightful, perfectly portioned and not overly filling. The train ran punctually both ways. Though it was an 18-hour day, the staff remained consistently helpful and polite. While this trip was a costly treat, it was worth it. The heritage train was beautiful, and we would definitely recommend Steam Dreams.

Guildford

A wonderful trip, just as we’d hoped. The welcome at Waterloo Station was a bit tentative, but the service from the entire staff afterward was simply fantastic! The assistance, food, and comfort of traveling on a historic train were all superb. The atmosphere and their dedication to making us feel at ease were remarkable. We traveled to Kingswear to visit Greenway, Agatha Christie’s estate. The train beautifully captured the era and atmosphere of the journey. After getting off at Paignton, we visited Greenway and returned by ferry to Dartmouth. The destinations, including Kingswear with its own charming station, were absolutely picturesque. The day flew by and was incredibly enjoyable. Traveling on a steam locomotive, coupled outside London, with excellent company and great food made it unforgettable. From champagne and appetizers to main courses, it was England at its finest.

Guildford combines rich English history, accessible countryside views, and a lively cultural scene within an easily navigable town center.

We boarded the delightful Pullman at Haywards Heath, traveling to Cambridge and Ely. The carriage staff provided outstanding service, taking excellent care of us. The food and wine were superb, offering a luxurious experience reminiscent of the era. Highly recommended for a special occasion.

Had an absolutely wonderful experience on a day trip to Bath. The decor and hospitality went beyond expectations. The carriages were spotless, elegantly furnished, and the seating was incredibly comfortable. The staff were friendly, courteous, and always ready to help. The food served was of excellent quality, and we truly wished the day could have lasted longer.

This trip, from Waterloo to Paignton and Kingswear with Steam Dreams, stands out as the best I've taken with them so far. From beginning to end, we were looked after exceptionally well in the Pullman Class by courteous and attentive staff. They handled everything seamlessly, ensuring no issues arose throughout the journey. The food was phenomenal, starting with champagne on arrival and continuing with breakfast, pastries, a four-course evening meal, and petit fours. Tea and coffee were plentiful, alongside a £21 alcohol allowance. The carriage's decor was stunning, with well-arranged tables and impeccable food service. Our two attendants were fantastic, smiling all day long despite their early 3:00 AM start. Even when we left the train at 9:45 PM, they remained cheerful and dedicated. The carriage manager was great at keeping us informed about the day’s schedule, leaving no questions unanswered. Travelers could board the train at Waterloo or other designated stations, with a vintage diesel engine until Taunton, where the steam engine took over. Initially, the ticket seemed expensive, but the experience proved it to be worth every penny—truly excellent value. At Paignton, passengers had the option to visit either Paignton or Kingswear. We opted for Kingswear and enjoyed a free ferry ride to Dartmouth, with over three hours to explore after showing our ticket. The heritage line between Paignton and Kingswear added a special touch. Overall, it was a long but remarkable day, one that I wholeheartedly recommend to others.
