Dipping it in wild chive flower sauce is seriously addictive. Street Tibetan noodles with sweet tea cost less than 20 total, a morning lifesaver for altitude sickness. Gongga Changguo’s red potato noodles are sticky, fragrant, and sweet. Yogurt mixed with sugar is the best way to cut the richness. If you’re sensitive to altitude, you’ll really appreciate it. To catch the Pumo Yong Lake sunrise, stay one night in Langkazi County. There are a few clean places in the 200–400 range. Tuiwa village homestay lets you lie down and watch the lake, but it’s at 5,010 meters. Don’t push yourself if you have altitude sickness. My travel companion was gasping for air in the middle of the night. ⚠️ A few final scattered tips, all learned the hard way In July, daytime temperatures in Shannan are just over 20 degrees. UV rays are so strong that makeup melts off in five minutes after two hours. Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses are a must. Don’t skimp on moisturizer either; the wind dries your lips until they crack. Get your border pass in advance at your registered residence. They check it when you go to places like Luozha and Langkazi. You can get it in Lhasa too, but the lines are annoying. On the first day, don’t take hot showers, don’t overeat, and don’t overexert yourself. Give your body two days to adjust. Drink plenty of warm water if you have mild headaches. Consider oxygen tanks only if it gets severe. Agree on your route and price with your driver the night before. Hailing cars at scenic spots often leads to being overcharged, especially around Yamdrok Lake. Don’t take photos randomly in temples. Put away your phone in the prayer hall and monks’ practice areas. Walk clockwise on the prayer path. This respect is necessary 🎐 The Lalin railway from Lhasa to Shannan station takes about an hour and a half and is the most comfortable way. If driving yourself, the roads have many curves and strong winds. Don’t cram four or five spots into one day. The altitude adds up quickly. Slowing down lets you enjoy the scenery better. Shannan isn’t a place to just "check off and leave." It’s the kind of place to sit for half a day in a sweet tea house, watch locals thresh barley, and slow your pace down.
