Hefei is nice but I won’t come again because honestly…
Hefei is nice, but I really won’t make a special trip here again 😭 (a super detailed, honest guide to avoid pitfalls)
Just got back from Hefei, and here’s the blunt truth:
Hefei is a comfortable, clean city with kind people, but it’s really not suitable for a dedicated trip!
Before coming, I scrolled through Xiaohongshu expecting a hidden gem with a gentle Huizhou vibe, lots of great food, and fun shopping.
After arriving, I found: it’s a great city to live in, but the travel experience is pretty ordinary!
No stunning landmarks, no clusters of must-see spots, attractions are very spread out, the weather is brutal, and most popular spots look better filtered than in real life.
Honestly: it’s worth a visit if you’re passing through, but no need to make a special trip!
Here’s a no-ad, purely tourist’s real experience, super detailed guide to avoid pitfalls.
If you’re planning to come to Hefei, save this! It’ll save you time and money avoiding all the traps!!
🌿 First, some objective praise: all the reasons Hefei is worth recognizing
No sugarcoating, Hefei is really great for living!
✅ The city is super clean and tidy
Wide roads, neat streets, excellent greenery, overall clean and comfortable, very soothing to the eyes.
✅ Locals are gentle and low-key
No overcharging, no exclusion, slow pace, easy to ask for directions and shop, the city vibe is very pleasant.
✅ Affordable prices and great value
Compared to nearby cities, food, milk tea, snacks, and lodging are all budget-friendly, no tourist trap pricing.
✅ Food flavors suit most people
Light and not heavy on spices, lots of Huizhou-style snacks, no big misses, tasty and affordable.
✅ The city is well ordered
No scams, no unlicensed taxis, no forced spending, overall a safe travel environment.
If you want to relax, stroll slowly, enjoy food, or have a short stopover, Hefei is very suitable!
But if you want to see beautiful scenery, check off big attractions, or have an immersive travel experience, you’ll be disappointed!
❌ Key reasons to avoid a special trip to Hefei (real pain points)
1. Attractions are extremely spread out, most of your time is spent traveling!
Hefei’s biggest fatal flaw! Attractions aren’t clustered but scattered all over north, south, east, and west.
· City cultural spots: Xiaoyaojin Park, pedestrian street, Mingjiao Temple, Li Hongzhang’s former residence
· Suburban attractions: Sanhe ancient town, Hongshizui, Binhu Forest, Dashu Mountain, Banbian Street
Distances are huge!
Sanhe ancient town is over 40 km from downtown, more than 1 hour one way, round trip wastes half a day.
Every outing means crossing districts, traveling takes longer than sightseeing, the experience is very fragmented with no travel vibe at all.
2. The weather is hellish! No friendly season all year round
The truth no one tells you online: Hefei has no comfortable travel season!
🌧️ May–June rainy season
Humidity over 85%, hot and sticky
You sweat just standing still, clothes always damp and sticking to you
Laundry takes 2–3 days to dry, sudden heavy rain can ruin your plans anytime
☀️ July–August peak summer
It’s like a barbecue! 36℃+ is normal
Blazing sun and stifling heat, sweat pours within 5 minutes outside, no way to enjoy outdoor sightseeing
🍂 Autumn and winter are cold and damp
Southern damp cold hits hard, windy and chilly, feels colder than northern China
Summary: very few good travel days all year!
3. Popular spots are overfiltered, real scenes are mostly average
Most popular spots in Hefei are just ordinary city parks and streets
Xiaohongshu filters hype them as “healing secret spots, hidden fairylands”
In reality: ordinary, plain, no memorable features
Making a special trip just to check in is not worth it!
4. Too little to do, you can see everything in 2 days
Hefei really only suits a 2-day short trip
By day 3, there’s nowhere new to go, just repeat shopping, eating, and zoning out
A long trip here feels very empty!
⚠️ Super pointless attractions in Hefei | don’t make a special trip!
❶ Sanhe ancient town
The least worth a special trip!
Many are attracted by “thousand-year-old town, Huizhou water town”
Real experience: a commercialized, ordinary ancient town + very far away
❌ Too far from downtown, exhausting round trip
❌ Buildings look the same everywhere, all ancient towns nationwide are alike
❌ Few things to see, single experience, very low value
✅ Real advice: visit if passing by, don’t spend a whole day here!
❷ Dashu Mountain Forest Park
Don’t be fooled by influencer hiking guides!
It’s just a small city hill
Not high, not steep, ordinary views
Full sun exposure on the hike, lots of mosquitoes in summer
No need to make a special trip!
❸ Most popular Binhu lakeside spots
Hongshizui, lakeside trails are okay for photos
But far away, windy and hot, poor facilities
No activities besides taking pictures, very boring
✅ Truly worth visiting! Hefei’s best spots without pitfalls
1. Anhui Museum (new building) ✨ must visit!
The most worthwhile, ticket-worthy, and reliable place in Hefei!
Free, impressive, rich collections
Huizhou culture, ancient artifacts, deep history
Perfect for a slow, thoughtful visit to learn and take photos
💡 Important reminder: must book in advance!! Almost no tickets on site!
Weekends are very crowded, be sure to reserve your time slot on the official mini program!
2. Xiaoyaojin Park
Hefei city landmark!
Childhood memory for old Hefei locals
Free entry, beautiful greenery, ancient-style bridges, lakes, and shade
Leisurely strolls, photos, and relaxing in the breeze are very pleasant
No effort, no hassle, great experience
3. Huaihe Road pedestrian street + Mingjiao Temple
Downtown’s lively hub
Old street + ancient temple combo, peaceful amid the bustle
Great for slow evening strolls, snacks, and soaking in city life
4. Laijie Street
Hefei’s food hotspot!
Great atmosphere at night
Lots of snacks, great value, popular with locals too
Nice lighting for night snacks, strolling, and photos
🍜 Hefei food | must-eat authentic + avoid list (local truth)
✅ Must-try local specialties (no misses)
✔️ Hefei’s four famous snacks, Sanhe rice dumplings
✔️ Authentic stinky mandarin fish (choose old shops!)
✔️ Luzhou roast duck, duck oil biscuits
✔️ Various Huizhou stir-fries, sticky rice lotus root, crisp sugar
✔️ Local milk tea Kawangka (affordable and tasty!)
❌ Absolutely avoid!
1. Don’t buy from Zhanji or Kawangka at scenic spots!
Slightly overpriced, same taste as city stores, just wasting money
2. Avoid popular shops on pedestrian street that actively pull customers!
Mostly overpriced and average taste, pure tourist traps
3. Be cautious with cheap stinky mandarin fish!
Too cheap usually means fake, bad texture, not fresh
4. Be careful with street photo ops with dolls!
Many are free to take photos but charge fees afterward
5. Don’t buy souvenirs at scenic spots!
Severely overpriced, buy gifts at big city supermarkets for authentic and cheaper options
🚗 Transportation, lodging, and hidden traps to avoid
Transportation pitfalls
❌ Don’t trust cheap day tours on the street
All shopping tours, rushed schedules, poor experience, lots of traps
❌ Don’t rent cheap electric bikes in the suburbs
Fake range, poor condition, run out of power mid-trip, plus deposit
✅ Prioritize subway + ride-hailing in the city for peace of mind and no scams
Lodging recommendations
✅ First choice: Huaihe Road pedestrian street, near city center
Convenient transport, easy food and shopping, nice night views
❌ Don’t stay in remote scenic area homestays
Poor value, inconvenient transport, bad facilities
📍 Most comfortable 2-day 1-night itinerary (no rushing, no pitfalls)
Day 1: Xiaoyaojin Park → Huaihe Road pedestrian street → Mingjiao Temple → authentic local snacks in the city → Laijie Street night scene and snacks
Day 2: Anhui Museum thorough visit → finish with classic city food → return trip
(Really enough to enjoy! Any extra day means no new attractions!)
💥 Final honest words
Hefei is truly a gentle, clean, livable, and lively city!
It’s great for living, studying, settling down, or a relaxing stopover
But really not suitable for a dedicated long trip
Scenery isn’t stunning, attractions are too spread out, few things to do, and the weather is tough
That’s why I say: Hefei is nice, but I won’t make a special trip here again.
It’s not that it’s bad, it’s just not made for travel, only for living ✨
