Hornafjordur travel guide and discussion

#photovsrealitytravel Hey everyone! I just have to tell you about my trip to Vatnajökull in Iceland. I thought I was ready. I had scrolled through so many filtered photos, the ones showing electric-blue ice caves and perfectly pristine snow, thinking, “Okay, I get it, it's pretty.” But let me tell you, when I actually set foot on the Vatnajökull Adventure Glacier, it wasn't just “pretty.” It was mind-blowing. I just looked around in absolute awe. The thing that photos, even mine, cannot capture is the absolute sheer scale of it all. They always crop it, right? They frame a nice shot. But standing there, you realize you are tiny. That ice isn't just blue in a little puddle; it’s a terrifying, beautiful blue that seems to hum with ancient energy, stretching on for miles under the jagged mountains. The textures were raw and complex, with volcanic ash mixing into the ancient ice, making it look like a dynamic, living sculpture rather than a flat, glossy postcard. When I saw the photos, I saw beautiful scenery, but when I get there, the reality completely shattered all of my digital expectations. To get there, most people (including me!) drive the South Coast from Reykjavik, which is a breathtaking adventure in itself, passing massive waterfalls and black sand beaches. It's about a 4-hour drive to Jökulsárlón, the glacier lagoon, which is the perfect starting point. For budget, I'd say Iceland isn't cheap, but you can manage. I camped and bought groceries, which helped immensely. A glacier hiking tour is essential for safety and access, and those run around $100-$150, but it’s worth every penny. For local tips, definitely book your guided tours in advance, they fill up fast. Wear layers! I wore thermals, fleece, a waterproof shell, and real hiking boots. And when you are near the lagoon, keep an eye out for seals; I saw several just playing in the water. I suggests taking the boat tour through the lagoon too; it's mesmerizing. You can go inside an ice cave (check if they are open/safe!), try ice climbing, or simply find a spot to listen to the ice crackle. It's an entire day of adventure. When you're looking for things to do, the classic ice cave tours are a must-see for everyone. They feel like walking into a frozen diamond, but remember they are only accessible with guides and subject to weather. For the more daring, there's always ice climbing, where you strap on crampons and learn to scale vertical blue walls, I didn't try this, but it looked incredibly thrilling. But beyond the extreme, I found that just sitting on the black sand at the nearby Diamond Beach, watching the clear ice sculptures drift ashore, was equally profound and moving. I can’t stress this enough: go see Vatnajökull. It’s a place where the air is pure, the water is sweet, and reality will always be ten times more epic than the picture. My photos may be pretty, but the feeling of being there, that cold wind, that bright sun reflecting off miles of blue, the silence and the scale…. is something that I will never forget and that no camera can truly capture. #Vatnajökull #IcelandAdventure #PhotoVsReality #GlacierHiking #Jökulsárlón #IceCaveIceland #SouthCoastAdventure #ExploreIceland #NaturePhotography #Wanderlust #TravelDiary #Mindblown

I pulled my rental car off Route 1, escaping the tour buses heading toward the golden circle, and stepped into an Iceland that felt entirely my own. Everyone rushes straight to the headliners like Skógafoss or the iconic Víkurkirkja church overlooking the sea stacks of Reynisdrangar in Vík, but the real magic hides in plain sight along the quiet detours. Wandering past a turf-covered farmstead framed by basalt cliffs, I found a serene, lesser-known waterfall cascade—where crystal-clear glacier water tumbled quietly over moss-draped stones without a single camera shutter in sight. Continuing east past the staggering tongue of Svínafellsjökull glacier and the volcanic basalt columns of Garðar cave at Reynisfjara, I realized this region is wildly underrated because people view it merely as a fast drive between major landmarks rather than a slow landscape to savour. The locations captured in these photos tell that story, featuring Stókksnes / Vestrahorn, Víkurkirkja Church in Vík, Skógafoss, Goðafoss / Skjálfandafljót, Dyrhólaey Peninsula Overlook, Reynisfjara Basalt Columns, Svínafellsjökull Glacier Viewpoint, and Svartifoss in Skaftafell. I discovered that getting here is incredibly straightforward: rent a 2WD vehicle for the paved Ring Road or opt for a 4x4 if you intend to explore gravel spur roads during shoulder season. To bypass the heaviest crowds and catch the best lighting for photography, visit between late May and September, aiming for early morning or late evening under the midnight sun. A great local tip for visiting on a budget is to skip expensive sit-down restaurants by stocking up on groceries at local Bonus or Krónan supermarkets, packing daily picnic lunches near the falls, and drinking fresh tap water straight from nature. I urge every traveler to slow down and wander off the worn paths, because Iceland's true spirit isn't found at the gift shops—it lives in the vast silences between the mountains and the sea. #IcelandTravel #UnderratedDestinationsns #ExploreIceland #HiddenIceland #SouthCoastIceland #IcelandRoadTrip #Wanderlust #OffTheBeatenPath #underratedspots

Jökulsárlón Ice Lagoon is one of Iceland’s most breathtaking natural wonders, where ancient glacial ice floats peacefully across deep blue waters beneath towering mountains. Every iceberg has its own shape, color, and story, making the landscape feel completely different with every visit. Watching enormous pieces of ice slowly drift across the lagoon is an unforgettable experience. Some glow with brilliant shades of blue, while others appear almost perfectly white, creating a surreal contrast against the dark volcanic landscape. 🧊🏔️✨ Just across the road, Diamond Beach adds another magical touch, with pieces of glacial ice scattered across the black volcanic sand like sparkling diamonds. Together, the lagoon and beach create one of Iceland’s most extraordinary landscapes. 📍 Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, Iceland 🇮🇸 🧊 A magical place where glaciers, icebergs, black sand, and the Atlantic Ocean create a landscape unlike anywhere else. #Jokulsarlon #IceLagoon #Iceland #IcelandTravel #VisitIceland #GlacierLagoon #DiamondBeach #IcelandNature #TravelDiaries #Wanderlust #NatureLovers #ScenicBeauty #BeautifulDestinationss 🧊💙🏔️🇮🇸

Crossing the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and following the waterway to the ocean, you officially set foot on the legendary Diamond Beach. Fragments of the Vatnajökull glacier, having drifted in the lagoon for centuries, are carried into the sea by the currents, only to be washed back ashore by the waves of the Atlantic Ocean. These colossal chunks of ice are scattered across the deep, pristine black volcanic sand. Catching the sunlight and shimmering against the water, they look just like giant diamonds left behind on the coast by some mythical giant. When you visit, let your imagination run wild! Crafted by nature, the ultimate master sculptor, each block of ice takes on a shape completely unique in the universe. With a little imagination, you can find the most amazing resemblances: A majestic glacier throne, ready for your coronation 👑 A crystal-clear polar glass screen with intricate textures ✨ Or even... pick one up and you've got the world's only natural ice-crystal designer handbag 👜 The black sand is grounding and mysterious, while the blue and white ice crystals sparkle brilliantly. Walking along this shore feels like wandering through a massive open-air ice sculpture gallery—every step brings a new surprise, and every glance reveals nature's endless whimsy! 📸 A Magical Tour of the Diamond Coast: Pics 2–3 | Stepping into the fantasy world of Diamond Beach: The black sand is dotted with countless glacial fragments washed up by the waves. This grand polar coastline pulls you in instantly. Pics 1, 4–6 | Taking a seat on the "Glacier Throne": A naturally formed ice throne! The bright yellow jacket creates a stunning contrast with the pure blue ice, and this boss-level pose is a straight 10/10. Pics 7–9 | Bizarre and beautiful natural sculptures: Some resemble icy folding screens, while others look like massive water droplets. If you look closely at the patterns and the deep azure hues trapped inside the ice, it’s truly breathtaking. Pic 10 | Just casually holding a limited-edition "Ice-Crystal Designer Bag": Strike a high-fashion pose! Rocking this one-of-a-kind bag hand-carved by nature, you'll radiate total main character energy on the black sand beach! 📍 Location: Diamond Beach (Breiðamerkursandur), Iceland 🇮🇸

#worthitornot People dream of blue ice caves, but the reality is a logistical challenge that makes the reward even sweeter. I joined a tour departing from Jökulsárlón Lagoon (approx. 19,000 ISK). The drive to Falljökull took 20 minutes on a bone-jarring F-road. We geared up with crampons and helmets. Unlike Sólheimajökull, Falljökull is an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest ice cap. The hike to the cave entrance involved navigating slippery, ash-covered ice (from recent eruptions). The "Crystal Cathedral" isn't a tourist trap; it’s a naturally formed cavern beneath the glacier. As we descended into the cave, the light changed. Outside was grey; inside was a pulsating sapphire. The guide used a pickaxe to chip away a small piece of ice to show us the clarity—it was like holding glass. I used a camera with a wide-angle lens, but even a smartphone struggled with the low light. A critical tip: charge your batteries fully. Cold drains them instantly. I carried two spares in my inner pockets to keep them warm. The floor of the cave was slick with "glacier milk" (fine silt). I fell once because I didn't trust my crampons. The guide emphasized that these caves are transient; by next year, this "Cathedral" might be gone. Is it worth the high price tag? Absolutely. It’s a glimpse into a world that doesn't last. Does knowing that a place is temporary make the experience more profound for you?

Iceland has always been on my bucket list, and I finally made it happen with a friend during winter break! 🥹 But here was the catch—neither of us can drive. 😂 Plus, Iceland's winter weather is notoriously unpredictable, so the idea of a self-drive road trip was completely out of the question for us... In the end, we booked the "8-Day Song of Ice and Fire Ring Road Tour" on Trip.com. We circled the entire island via Route 1 in a private chartered car with a flexible itinerary. It made the whole trip so much more relaxing! For those of you who also "can’t drive but desperately want to see Iceland," here’s the breakdown 👇 🧊 Iceland 8-Day Ring Road Tour | Private Car + 7 Nights Accommodation We chose the [8-Day Song of Ice and Fire Ring Road Tour]. Starting from Reykjavik, we traveled through the Golden Circle, the South Coast, Vik, Höfn, Egilsstaðir, Akureyri, and Borgarnes, before finally returning to Reykjavik. Basically, we hit all the most classic regions of Iceland in one go. We didn't have to worry about how long to drive each day, where to park, or how to schedule attractions. For two people who can't drive, this was incredibly friendly 🤣 I especially loved the Golden Circle! It is absolutely worth going!!! On the second day, we set off from Reykjavik to Vik, heading straight for the classic Golden Circle, including iconic spots like Þingvellir. After that, we headed south toward Vik and Höfn. The scenery along the way was staggeringly beautiful. Glaciers, waterfalls, black sand beaches, and charming towns—everything you imagine about Iceland appears right before your eyes. And this itinerary isn't just one of those "get off the bus, take a photo, and get back on" tours! ❄️ Glacier Hiking is a must-try! One of the activities I looked forward to most was glacier hiking. Actually walking on thousand-year-old blue ice and seeing the glacier up close is a completely different feeling than just taking photos from an observation deck 😭 There was also a boat tour of the glacier lagoon, where you can sail right next to massive chunks of blue floating ice. If you’re lucky, you might even spot "wild seals"! In that moment, I felt: Iceland is totally worth it!!! ♨️ Day 1 at the Blue Lagoon—I loved this arrangement After such a long flight, I really didn't want to start an intense sightseeing schedule immediately after landing 😂 Scheduling the Blue Lagoon for the first day was perfect. We got to soak in the hot springs and relax before officially starting the ring road tour the next day. Beyond glacier hiking and the lagoon, the trip also included ATV off-roading and whale watching on the final day. The 8 days weren't just about sitting in a car and taking photos—the experience was much richer! 🐋 Whale watching on the final day Returning to Reykjavik on the 8th day, I thought it would just be travel time, but a whale-watching excursion was arranged! I really liked this setup. Having seen the glaciers, waterfalls, fjords, and towns in the previous days, ending the trip with whale watching made the whole journey feel complete. ✅ A few more highlights: 1️⃣ Private chartered car—so much more comfortable if you can't drive Iceland's winter road conditions are tricky, especially since we don't know how to drive at all, so we never even considered a self-drive. This tour provides a vehicle based on the number of people in your group. For all 8 days, you have someone driving you to every location, so you don't have to worry about transportation at all. For first-time visitors, it really takes a lot of stress off your plate. 2️⃣ Flexible itinerary—you can adjust it yourself I really liked this part! They offer 1-on-1 itinerary planning. The starting point, route, and actual activities can all be discussed. If there’s somewhere specific you want to go or an activity you’re not interested in, you can talk to the travel planner and adjust it to your liking. Compared to starting a guide from scratch, this method is perfect for people like me who "want freedom but don't want to plan everything themselves" 😂 3️⃣ A full Ring Road tour, not just the South Coast This was one of the reasons I chose this package. Besides the must-see spots like the Golden Circle, Vik, and the South Coast, we also went all the way to Höfn, Egilsstaðir in the east, and Akureyri in the north before returning via Borgarnes. Over the 8 days, we saw everything from the south to the east and the north. Seeing all the different landscapes of Iceland in one trip is perfect for those who want a comprehensive experience. In summary, if you are: A first-time visitor to Iceland / Can't drive 🚗 / Traveling with friends 👭 / Don't want to plan your own itinerary every day 🗺️ You really don't need to force yourself to do a winter self-drive. In my opinion, the most annoying thing about a place like Iceland isn't "where to go," but the long distances between attractions, combined with unpredictable winter weather and road conditions. Having someone handle the transportation, accommodation, attractions, and activities allows you to just focus on the scenery and taking photos 🤣 Especially if you want to hit the Golden Circle + South Coast + East + North all at once, while trying glacier hiking, glacier lagoons, ATVs, the Blue Lagoon, and whale watching, this kind of Ring Road tour is much more convenient. For me, it was simple—no driving, no daily planning, just 8 days of worry-free travel around the island!

I traveled from September 17th to September 20th. Our guide, Muzi, was incredibly warm, kind, responsible, and helpful. I... I traveled from September 17th to September 20th. Our guide, Muzi, was incredibly warm, kind, responsible, and always went out of her way to help the group. I feel extremely lucky to have been on a tour led by her. Even with a group of 35 people and various challenges—such as a hotel being unable to accommodate everyone—Muzi worked tirelessly to arrange our stay. She resolved every issue immediately, and I am so, so grateful to her! Her explanations of the sights were exceptionally detailed and clear, even covering Iceland's history in depth. This allowed us to gain a wealth of knowledge in addition to enjoying the natural beauty! Although it wasn't the season for blue ice caves, the glacier boat tour was just as fantastic. The glacier lagoon was breathtaking in the sunshine, with the pale blue ice sparkling beautifully. Reykjavik was small but stunning under the sun, and the Blue Lagoon was also a special experience. It was truly a worthwhile trip...

🌿 The Green of Iceland 🇮🇸 Iceland is often called the “Land of Fire and Ice,” but its breathtaking green landscapes are just as magical. During summer, the countryside transforms into a vivid carpet of emerald meadows, moss-covered lava fields, rolling hills, and dramatic valleys. From the lush Þingvellir National Park to the mossy landscapes around Skaftafell and the peaceful green valleys of the Icelandic countryside, every view feels like a scene from a fantasy world. Waterfalls, glaciers, black-sand beaches, and endless green fields create a landscape unlike anywhere else. Iceland in summer is pure green magic—wild, peaceful, and unforgettable. 🇮🇸💚 #Iceland #GreenIceland #VisitIceland #IcelandTravel #LandOfFireAndIce #NatureLovers #ExploreIceland #TravelDreams #BeautifulDestinationss #Wanderlust

Hidden within Vatnajökull National Park, Svartifoss, meaning “Black Falls,” is one of Iceland’s most unique and mesmerizing waterfalls. Unlike any other waterfall in the country, Svartifoss is framed by towering black basalt columns that look as though they were carved by nature’s own architects. The journey to the waterfall is part of the experience. A scenic trail winds through rugged landscapes, offering breathtaking views of glaciers, mountains, and Iceland’s untouched wilderness before revealing the magnificent falls. 🖤 What makes Svartifoss so special is the dramatic backdrop of hexagonal basalt columns. Formed by ancient volcanic activity, these striking rock formations create a natural amphitheater around the cascading water. 💦 As the waterfall plunges over the dark volcanic cliffs, the contrast between the white water and black rock creates a scene that feels almost otherworldly. 🏔️ Surrounded by Iceland’s raw and untamed beauty, Svartifoss perfectly captures the island’s unique combination of fire, ice, and volcanic landscapes. 📸 My favorite moment was standing before the waterfall, listening to the sound of rushing water while admiring the incredible geometric patterns of the basalt columns. It felt like witnessing one of nature’s greatest masterpieces. ✨ Svartifoss is a reminder that Iceland never stops surprising you with landscapes unlike anywhere else on Earth. 📍 Svartifoss, Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland 🇮🇸 “Some waterfalls impress with power. I’ve never been somewhere that felt less like Earth and more like another planet — until Iceland. Black volcanic sand, glaciers cracking under their own weight, and geothermal steam rising from open fields make this island feel like it’s still being formed, right in front of you. 🌋 A Landscape in Motion Driving the Golden Circle, I stood at Geysir watching Strokkur erupt every few minutes, boiling water shooting skyward without warning. At Gullfoss, a massive waterfall drops in two dramatic stages into a canyon carved by glacial runoff — the spray catching rainbows on sunny afternoons. Along the south coast, Reynisfjara’s black sand beach, framed by towering basalt columns, felt almost otherworldly, especially with waves crashing violently against the shore. Not far away, the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon left me speechless — massive chunks of blue ice drifting silently toward the sea, some washing up on a nearby beach nicknamed Diamond Beach. 🌌 Chasing the Northern Lights On a clear night outside Reykjavik, away from city lights, I watched green ribbons of aurora ripple across the sky. No photo I’d seen prepared me for how it actually moves — shifting and folding like something alive. ♨️ Geothermal Escapes Soaking in the Blue Lagoon’s milky blue water, surrounded by black lava fields, was the perfect reset after days of hiking and driving — geothermally heated and rich in minerals, it’s become one of Iceland’s most iconic experiences for good reason. 🏨 Where to Stay Reykjavik makes the easiest base, with day trips reaching most major sites. For a slower pace, small guesthouses along the south coast put you closer to waterfalls and glaciers. ✈️ Getting There Keflavik International Airport connects Iceland to major cities across Europe and North America, roughly a 45-minute drive from Reykjavik. Iceland is truly beautiful. But it’s also really “tough.” 😭 Glaciers, waterfalls, black sand beaches—every shot looks like wallpaper. But if you ask me if I’d go again? My answer is no, once is enough. 📍Trip highlights (these spots are a must) You can cover the Golden Circle in one day: walk between the two tectonic plates at Þingvellir National Park; watch the geyser shoot water up to 40 meters high at Geysir; see a double rainbow on sunny days at Gullfoss waterfall. The south coast is the real gem: make sure to walk behind Seljalandsfoss waterfall; climb 400 steps to the top of Skógafoss waterfall; the basalt columns and black waves at Reynisfjara black sand beach look otherworldly—but never turn your back to the ocean, the killer waves are no joke. Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and Diamond Beach feature blue ice floating on the lake and sparkling ice chunks scattered on the black sand—breathtakingly beautiful. If you have time, visit the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, where the “Game of Thrones” Hat Mountain is located. The milky blue water of the Blue Lagoon is a must, but be sure to book in advance on the official website. 🗺️Itinerary (classic 6 days 5 nights) Day 1 arrive in Reykjavik and explore the city. Day 2 Golden Circle day tour. Day 3 south coast waterfalls and black sand beach. Day 4 glacier lagoon and Diamond Beach. Day 5 Reykjavik city tour and Blue Lagoon soak. Day 6 Snæfellsnes Peninsula or departure. 🍽️Food recommendations (brief) Reykjavik hot dogs are a must-try—cheap and authentic. Lobster soup and local salmon are signature dishes. Iceland is expensive, so stocking up on snacks at Bonus supermarket can save you a lot. ⚠️Travel tips The weather changes fast, so windproof and waterproof jackets are more important than anything else. Summer self-driving around the island is doable, but some roads close in winter. Don’t stop by the roadside to take photos casually. Glacier hiking and blue ice caves require certified guides—don’t go alone. Stay far away from the waves at the black sand beach. Iceland feels like a wild dream. The beauty is real, and so is the exhaustion. Once is enough. 🌋

We actually made it up here! The moment our crampons bit firmly into the ice with a satisfying crunch, I was overwhelmed with pure emotion—we were truly setting foot on the Svínafellsjökull Glacier! The world before us was blanketed in icy azure and pristine white. The glacier's textures stretched out like the open palm of the earth, reaching all the way to the distant snow-capped peaks. Along the trek, our guide shared the fascinating, centuries-old history of the glacier's evolution, while constantly reminding us to steer clear of the mesmerizing yet incredibly dangerous crevasses. We even spotted an "abandoned camera" swallowed by a deep chasm, destined to remain there forever—a stark reminder of the sheer, awe-inspiring power of nature. The most fun part had to be everyone hacking away at a flat sheet of ice with our ice axes. Holding a crystal-clear, ancient chunk of ice in our hands and actually taking a bite—the taste was quite literally the purest, frostiest "millennium-old freshness" you could ever imagine! 📸 Magical Moments on the Glacier: Pics 1–3 | Where Dreams Meet Reality: Layers upon layers of blue ice and expansive ice fields—every glance feels like an impossibly gorgeous painting. Pic 4 | Dangerous Yet Alluring Chasms: Bottomless crevasses radiating a faint, eerie blue glow from the depths. You have to be incredibly careful walking near them! Pic 5 | A Glacier History Lesson: Listening to the guide's stories made us realize that what we were walking on was the physical trace of thousands of years of time. Pic 6 | Tasting Millennium-Old Sweetness: Chipping off a tiny piece of the ancient glacier. Crystal clear—the most unadulterated flavor of Iceland. Pic 7 | Memories Left Behind Forever: A camera dropped by a past traveler down a deep crevasse, now a tiny, mysterious relic of this frozen wilderness. Pic 8 | The Ice Axe Experience: Everyone gathered around to chip at the ice with axes, instantly turning into glacier miners. The interactive vibe was absolutely adorable! Pics 9–10 | Lonely Glacier Travelers: Another trekking group in the distance looking like tiny, shrinking figures, reminding us of how insignificant we are against the immense scale of nature. 📍 Location: Svínafellsjökull Glacier, Iceland 🇮🇸

If you visi. Is it worth visiting Nusa Penida? 🌴🌊 If you're traveling to Bali, chances are Nusa Penida is already on your bucket list. The iconic Kelingking Beach, the breathtaking Diamond Beach, cliffs plunging straight into the ocean, and those epic views that make you want to drop everything and see them for yourself. We debated for a long time whether to do a day trip or stay longer, and we ultimately opted for two days. Spoiler alert: it was definitely the right call! 🤍 Early in the morning, we took a speedboat from Sanur Port, leaving our scooter behind in Bali. Upon arriving on the island, we walked a bit away from the port to avoid renting from the first guys we saw and found a better deal. Heads up: scooters on Nusa Penida are often in pretty rough shape, so be sure to inspect yours carefully before renting. On our way to the hotel, we stopped by a beach club: had breakfast, chilled by the pool for a bit, and then went to check in. ✨ Day 1 — Diamond Beach. And it was just wow. The views are so stunning that photos don't even begin to do justice to the scale of this beauty. We hiked down to the beach itself, and we lucked out—there were very few people. Afterward, we headed to a beach club to relax and soak up the laid-back island vibes. 🌊 Day 2 — Kelingking Beach. We headed there first thing in the morning before it got too hot. However, it was already packed with people. We decided not to hike down—the trail looked pretty sketchy, and after Diamond Beach, we felt we’d already had our fill of hiking down to the ocean 😅 But even without the hike, Kelingking is absolutely a must-see. That unbelievable cliff stretching into the ocean is one of those landscapes that sticks with you forever. On our way back, we stopped by Broken Beach, but honestly, we weren't really blown away. It was scorching hot, and after everything we'd seen, we just wanted to get back to the pool ASAP. We spent the rest of the day at the hotel, lounging by the pool. Early the next morning, we headed to the port and took the boat back to Bali. So, is it worth visiting Nusa Penida? Absolutely—yes! 🤍 But my advice is to stay for at least two days. That way, you can take your time checking out the most beautiful spots without turning the trip into an endless marathon. The roads on the island are really bad in some places, so getting around takes a lot more time than you'd think. Honestly, Nusa Penida is one of those places that looks even better in person than in pictures. The views are truly mind-blowing. 🌴

Volcanoes, glaciers, black sand beaches, and the midnight sun – the most extreme natural landscapes on Earth are all concentrated in this 103,000 square kilometer land. ✨Must-visit top 4 attractions Golden Circle: You can visit Iceland's three major landmarks in one day. Walk between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates at Thingvellir National Park; Geysir erupts every few minutes, with water columns reaching 40 meters high; Gullfoss is Iceland's second-largest waterfall, and a rainbow is guaranteed on sunny days. South Coast scenery: Seljalandsfoss allows you to walk behind the curtain of water; Skógafoss offers a panoramic view from the top of its 400 steps; Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach features black basalt columns paired with giant waves. ⚠️Never turn your back to the sea, as the "sneaker waves" here have swept away tourists multiple times. Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon + Diamond Beach: Blue icebergs float on the lake. On the opposite Diamond Beach, black sand cradles sparkling ice chunks, like diamonds scattered on black velvet. In summer, you can take a boat tour among the icebergs. Blue Lagoon: This milky blue geothermal hot spring leaves your skin incredibly smooth. Advance booking on the official website is required, and tickets include a towel, drink, and face mask. It's conveniently located on the way to/from the airport, so it's recommended for your first or last day. 🗓️Recommended itineraries (copy directly) 6-day beginner-friendly route: Day 1 arrive in Reykjavik; Day 2 Golden Circle day trip; Day 3 South Coast waterfalls + black sand beach; Day 4 Glacier Lagoon + Diamond Beach; Day 5 Reykjavik city tour + Blue Lagoon; Day 6 Snæfellsnes Peninsula + return. 8-day Ring Road self-drive route (summer exclusive): Reykjavik → Vik → Höfn → Egilsstaðir → Mývatn → Akureyri → Hvammstangi → Borgarnes → Reykjavik. The Ring Road is 1,330 kilometers long, and traveling counter-clockwise offers increasingly stunning scenery. 🥢Must-try food Icelandic lamb (raised on wild herbs), fresh cod and lobster, Skyr yogurt (thick like Greek yogurt), hot dogs (Reykjavik's famous stand Bæjarins Beztu). 📌Tips to avoid pitfalls Visa: Chinese citizens traveling to Iceland need a Schengen visa; apply at least 1 month in advance. Best time: June–August for the midnight sun, allowing 20 hours of activity per day and the best road conditions; September–October for best value, with the first glimpses of the Northern Lights. Transportation: A 2WD car is sufficient for the Ring Road in summer, but gravel protection + sand and ash protection are strongly recommended. Iceland is windy, so hold the car door firmly when opening it. Gas stations are scarce in rural areas, so refuel when your tank is half full. Attire: Waterproof jacket + waterproof hiking boots are essential for walking behind waterfalls and glacier hikes. Don't forget sunscreen; the midnight sun is stronger than you think. A light down jacket is useful for mornings and evenings, even in summer. Safety: Never get close to the waves on black sand beaches! Do not approach glaciers or ice caves without a professional guide. This is the most breathtaking scenery at the end of the Earth 🌍

Drive safely, strong winds and slippery roads. Buy insurance. A mosquito-free summer is worth it. 🌿

Iceland is a once-in-a-lifetime destination 🌋❄️

Girls! Just back from Iceland a week ago, and my soul is still drifting on Diamond Beach 🧊 The aftereffects of this “land of ice and fire” are unreal! 🌍 Why must you go in July or August? Average temperature is 10–15℃. Daylight lasts 20–21 hours daily! The sun barely sets, and you can still take photos at 10 PM. The entire island’s roads are fully connected, so you can freely drive the Ring Road. The downside is that hotels are expensive during peak season, so book several months in advance. 📸 Must-visit spots + photo locations Golden Circle — Iceland’s highlight day tour! See the rift between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates at Þingvellir National Park; the Geysir geyser shoots water 40 meters high every few minutes; Gullfoss waterfall always has a rainbow on sunny days. The backwash waves are very dangerous. Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon + Diamond Beach — floating blue icebergs create a fairyland, the black sand beach on the opposite shore is scattered with sparkling ice chunks like diamonds on black velvet, a famous movie location. In summer, you can take a boat tour for about €50. If you only do the Golden Circle + South Coast, a regular 2WD is enough. Be sure to add gravel protection and high-risk insurance because Iceland’s wind is very strong. If you don’t drive, you can join local day tours. 💡 Tips ▪ Clothing: dress in layers! T-shirt + long sleeve + windproof waterproof jacket, even in summer you might need a light down jacket ▪ Midnight sun: bring an eye mask! Otherwise, you won’t be able to sleep ▪ Northern lights: can’t see them in summer, plan for September or later ▪ Blue Lagoon: a must-visit! ⏳ Recommended Duration: 1-2 days (South Coast Waterfalls Highlights) / 3-4 days (Including Glacier Hiking and Glacier Lagoon In-depth Tour) 💡 Why Visit: The grandeur of Gullfoss, the water curtain cave of Seljalandsfoss, the hidden Secret Waterfall, and the rainbow at Skógafoss—along the Ring Road on Iceland’s South Coast, waterfalls are so dense it feels like you’ve seen a lifetime’s worth of waterfalls. Each waterfall has a unique character—some rushing, some serene—and you can capture the world’s water curtains all in one day. The South Coast is also Iceland’s most developed tourist route, with good road conditions and dense attractions, perfect for first-time visitors. 📌 Must-Read Before You Go | Key Info for 2026 ⏰ Best Season: May to September is the best time to visit the South Coast waterfalls—good road conditions, long daylight hours, and abundant water flow. Some roads may be icy and trails closed in winter. 🎫 Admission: Gullfoss, Seljalandsfoss, and Skógafoss are all free to visit. 🚗 Transportation: The South Coast waterfalls are located along the Ring Road; self-driving is the best way to explore. Starting from Reykjavík, drive east along the Ring Road to visit them in order. It’s recommended to rent a 4WD SUV as Iceland’s weather is unpredictable, and 4WD handles gravel roads and sudden weather changes better. 🧥 What to Wear: Water mist from the waterfalls is heavy, so waterproof jackets, pants, and non-slip hiking shoes are essential. Cameras and phones should be protected with waterproof bags. Iceland’s weather changes quickly, so even in summer, bring windproof and warm layers. 🌊 Gullfoss | Iceland’s Most Majestic Waterfall Gullfoss is Iceland’s second-largest waterfall and one of the three main attractions of the Golden Circle, marked as “most recommended” in travel notes. The Hvítá River, originating from Langjökull Glacier, cascades down in two tiers here, with a total drop of 32 meters. In summer, the water flow can reach 140 cubic meters per second. On sunny days, a rainbow almost always spans the mist. · Location: About 1.5 hours’ drive from Reykjavík · Opening Hours: Open 24 hours year-round · Admission: Free · Tips: Spend 45 minutes to 1 hour here. The upper parking lot offers a panoramic view from above. Roads may be icy in winter, so watch your step. 💧 Seljalandsfoss | Walk Behind the Water Curtain Seljalandsfoss is about 60 meters high and located beside the Ring Road on the South Coast. Its biggest feature is a trail that leads behind the waterfall, allowing you to look out from inside the water curtain, like stepping into a “water curtain cave.” The trail is slippery and muddy, with heavy mist, so expect to get wet. · Location: Beside the Ring Road, about 2 hours’ drive from Reykjavík · Opening Hours: Open 24 hours year-round · Admission: Free · Tips: Spend 45 minutes to 1 hour. The classic photo spot is behind the waterfall, but the trail is slippery—wear non-slip shoes. The trail may be closed in winter; do not risk entering. 🤫 Secret Waterfall | A Hidden Gem in the Rock Crevice The Secret Waterfall is less than a kilometer east of Seljalandsfoss, about 40 meters high, hidden inside a canyon. You need to step on stones and pass through a narrow rock crevice to enter. Many visitors leave after Seljalandsfoss, missing this hidden treasure. · Location: Shares the parking lot with Seljalandsfoss, just a few minutes’ walk · Opening Hours: Open 24 hours year-round · Admission: Free · Tips: Spend 20-30 minutes. The canyon’s mysterious lighting is perfect for dramatic photos. Stones are slippery, so walk carefully. ⚡️ Skógafoss | The Instagrammable Waterfall with a Permanent Rainbow Skógafoss is 60 meters high and 25 meters wide, with a broad water curtain. On sunny days, a rainbow appears almost 100% of the time, making it one of the most photogenic waterfalls on the South Coast. There are stairs on the right side to climb to the top, offering a breathtaking view of the coastline. · Location: Beside the Ring Road, about 30 minutes’ drive east of Seljalandsfoss · Opening Hours: Open 24 hours year-round · Admission: Free · Tips: Spend 45 minutes to 1 hour. The stairs to the top are steep; wear non-slip shoes. 🗺️ South Coast Waterfalls One-Day Tour Route | No Detours, See Them All in One Day From Reykjavík, drive east along the Ring Road in this order for the most efficient route: Morning (about 1.5 hours’ drive): Depart Reykjavík and head straight to Gullfoss. Spend about 45 minutes to 1 hour. Noon (about 2 hours’ drive): Drive to Seljalandsfoss. Spend about 45 minutes to 1 hour. Then walk a few minutes to visit the Secret Waterfall for about 20-30 minutes. Afternoon (about 30 minutes’ drive): Continue east to Skógafoss. Spend about 45 minutes to 1 hour, and climb to the top to overlook the coastline. Evening: You can continue east to the black sand beach in Vík or return to Reykjavík the same way. 🧾 Practical Tips | Every Word Counts · Waterproof is a must: Iceland’s waterfall mist is everywhere. Waterproof jacket, pants, and non-slip hiking shoes are essential. Use waterproof bags for cameras and phones. · Sun protection: Iceland has long daylight hours in summer with strong UV rays. Sunglasses and sunscreen are essential. · Payment: Credit cards are widely accepted in Iceland; carry only a small amount of cash. · Safety: Waterfall trails are slippery. Do not climb over railings or get close to cliff edges. Some trails close in winter; do not risk entering. · Gas stations: Plenty of gas stations along the South Coast Ring Road. It’s recommended to fill up in Vík or Höfn before setting off. · Restrooms: Public restrooms are available at Gullfoss Visitor Center, Seljalandsfoss parking lot, and Skógafoss parking lot. 🌊 Iceland’s waterfalls are not just for “checking off” but for feeling—Gullfoss’s mist hits your face, Seljalandsfoss’s water curtain refracts rainbows in the sunlight, and the Secret Waterfall waits hidden in the rock crevice. Seeing four different water curtain personalities in one day—that’s the charm of the South Coast. 💬 Have you been to Iceland? Which impressed you most—the grandeur of Gullfoss, the water curtain cave of Seljalandsfoss, or the rainbow at Skógafoss? Feel free to share in the comments!
