🌿 Into the Wild While staying near Houay Xay and Luang Nam Tha, I decided to explore Nam Ha National Park in northern Laos. The park is known for its mountains, forests, small villages and remote trails. in January 2026 there was no entrance fee. 🥾 My Route Through Nam Ha I started near the village of Soptout at approximately 20.909818, 101.432478. There is a metal bridge here. It doesn't look particularly safe, but locals use it, including motorcycles. From Soptout, I continued on foot towards Namkoy Village at approximately 20.861056, 101.402821. The journey takes roughly a full day on foot, passing through a landscape of green hills and remote countryside. The road is very much Laos-style — mostly dirt and rough tracks rather than a proper paved road. 🛶 What Can You Do in Nam Ha? One option is to continue towards Nalan Village at approximately 20.848135, 101.369822. From Nalan, there are several possibilities. You can return towards the main road leading back to Luang Namtha through the mountains, or arrange a river trip. Local guides and tour agencies in Luang Namtha organize boat trips, BOOK IN ADVANCE IN LUANG NAMTHA and rafting-style excursions on the local rivers. Prices and availability can vary, so it is best to check locally before going. ⛺ Camping in the Park I also spent several days camping near the Nam Ha River. If you do camping hide, cause there are people guarding that national park. There are no shops along this route, so you need to bring everything you need. I collected river water and boiled it before drinking, although I cannot confirm the safety or quality of the river water, so this should not be taken as a recommendation. If you want to camp, it is better to ask a local tour agency or guide about suitable locations beforehand. Rangers may patrol some areas, and camping away from established tourist routes is preferable. After several days in the park, I returned approximately the same way I had entered. 🌄 Is Nam Ha Worth Visiting? If you are looking for an easy tourist attraction, this probably isn't it. But if you enjoy hiking, remote villages, mountains, camping and getting away from civilization, Nam Ha offers a very different side of Laos. There are no crowds, no shops and very little infrastructure — just dirt roads, forests, mountains and the sound of the river. It's directly opposite Huay Xai town in Bokeo Province, Laos. Just a boat crossing the Mekong River will take you to explore Lao culture, traditional houses, and sample Lao cuisine. You'll need your Thai ID card and a border pass obtained at the Chiang Khong District Office. Then, you'll go through immigration procedures at the pier before taking another boat to the Lao side and completing the same immigration procedures. On the Lao side, there are shared taxis (songthaew) waiting for you. The border crossing is open from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Today, we'll try grilled fish and "Khao Pun" (homemade rice noodles), a traditional Lao dish passed down through generations. You simply take a boat across the Mekong River to reach this landmark. The old buildings of the former French military camp have been renovated into a cafe named Fort Canost Cafe 1900. Inside, you can still see the fortress, offices, and prison cells, all preserved in their original condition, complemented by beautiful landscaping. An airplane used during the French colonial era is also on display. Most importantly, situated on a high hill, the area offers stunning views of the Mekong River. Besides drinks, the cafe also serves a variety of baked goods and one-plate meals. A quick tip: If you're interested in visiting, we recommend heading to Chiang Khong District in Chiang Rai Province to get a border pass at the Chiang Khong District Office. From there, make your way to Buk Pier and take a boat across the Mekong River to Houayxay, Bokeo Province, Lao PDR. The boat ride takes only 10 minutes. This time I took a day's car from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai, then from Chiang Khong to Huay Xai, Laos, and took a two-day and one-night boat to Luang Prabang. I stayed in Pak Binh for one night in the middle and learned from European and American backpackers. It is said that this itinerary is the "coming of age" for backpackers. It is indeed full of European and American tourists. I am the only Chinese, and I didn't see any Asian faces. It's quite tiring, and all I see on such a trip is tattered. I have been to Laos by plane, and it doesn't seem to be so shabby. The airport is generally OK. I went to the hotel and the scenic spot immediately, and I didn't feel poverty and ruin. It's different when I go by land. I will pass through rural areas, such as Pak Binh, which is still the same as the rural areas in China thirty years ago, including Vientiane. The bus station is shabby and looks like the bus station in a small town thirty years ago. I wanted to stop in Vientiane and fly back to Chiang Mai directly, but I thought about it and insisted on staying one more night in Sanjiang. Sanjiang is full of Chinese people. It doesn’t feel like Laos. It is exactly like a small town in China before the reform and opening up. Many people have written about it, so I won’t repeat it. Today I took the train to Khon Kaen and took a taxi to the bus station. The guide on the Internet said that there is a bus at 9 o'clock in the evening, and there are only three buses a day. I finally found No. 3, but it wasn't. I asked a security guard to take me to No. 1 and find the Sukhothai window. There was no one inside. It also said the 9.00 and 10.00 trains. What are Laotian weddings like? We were very lucky to encounter a friend of a friend's wedding during our travels in Pakse, Laos, and were invited to attend. Laotian weddings are very traditional and lively. The bride and groom wear gorgeous traditional costumes, with the bride's hair tied up in a high bun and adorned with gold and silver jewelry. They half-kneel in the center of the hall, facing a room full of flowers and an elder who presides over the ceremony. Behind them, the parents of the newlyweds also half-kneel, along with 20 or so relatives and friends who have come to bless the couple. Huixay is a town in Laos and the capital of Bokeo Province, located on the left bank of the Mekong River in the northwestern part of the country, next to the border with Thailand. Fort Carnot is a massive fort in Huay Xai that was constructed during the French colonial period. It is situated on a gorgeous hillside next to the Governor of Bokeo's main office, and there are two massive towers on display here, which represent the main component of the fort that has survived. The fort had fallen into disrepair and had to close in recent years, but it has since reopened and been cleaned up, making it a worthwhile stop on a tour of Huay Xai.
