2026 Iida Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in September)

From Magome to Tsumago, we took around 2-3 hours to complete the 7.7km trail. Might be longer if you stop for picture. We drive from our ryokan in Nakatsugawa, straight to Magome lower entrance. Parked at the parking area that costs us 500 yen per entry. There were also free parking available at the roadside but we missed them. * You can also start from Nagoya/Matsumoto by train too. You can get the map from tourist center. The trail is doable. A mix and match of road and forest trail. Got toilet along the way but not all of them have bidet. Halfway, you'll reach a tea house where you can get free tea! They have stamp too. We started collect the stamp from tourist center, the post office in Magome and at the tea house. Reaching Tsumago around 1pm-ish, took our lunch and decided to go back to the parking lot by taxi. There was bus available but the schedule was not on our side. If I remembered correctly, the frequency was hourly. Do check the schedule beforehand ok! Hope you have fun trying this activity!

Shibamata is a cute, vintage-style Japanese neighborhood located just outside Tokyo, only about 10 kilometers away from Ueno. You can take the Keisei Kanamachi Line and get off at Shibamata Station. Once you step off the train, you'll spot the statues of a man wearing a hat and a woman in an apron. They are the main characters from Otoko wa Tsurai yo, a famously popular Japanese TV drama and film series. It was a massive hit back in the day, with a whopping 48 installments produced, and parts of this very neighborhood served as the filming location. When you walk out of the station, just head straight down the street. Both sides of the road are lined with various shops and restaurants. This area is particularly famous for its traditional senbei (rice crackers) and offers a wide variety of dango (sweet dumplings) flavors to choose from. Along this street, you'll also find a super vintage candy shop called the Shibamata Toy Museum. Inside, they sell old-school Japanese children's sweets, retro toys, trading cards, and vintage photos of past celebrities. At the very end of the shopping street, you'll come across Taishakuten Daikyoji Temple, which was founded during the Edo period. It's well-known for praying for good health. Inside, there are intricate wood carvings and a beautiful Japanese garden, with an admission fee of 400 yen. Another unique highlight of this temple is the magnificent pine tree with its long, sprawling branches right in front of the main hall—all extending from a single trunk.

If you're looking for a trip that offers both tranquility and stunning photo opportunities, I highly recommend packing your bags and heading to Yamadera or Risshaku-Ji Temple in Yamagata Prefecture during winter. This place is truly unforgettable. Starting with the first image, you'll witness the majestic main hall covered in soft, white snow, contrasting beautifully with the colorful prayer flags adorning the surroundings. The atmosphere during this season is incredibly serene and refreshing. Moving on to the top right image, you'll find a stone torii gate standing tall amidst a snow-covered pine forest, evoking a sense of entering a mystical realm straight out of a storybook. As you shift to the bottom left image, the wonder of this temple becomes even more apparent, with its stunning wooden structures built securely against rocky cliffs, surrounded by snow-covered branches and boulders. It's a breathtaking sight that reflects profound faith. The highlight and reward for climbing over a thousand steps is the final image on the bottom right. From this elevated viewpoint, you can see a snow-blanketed village nestled in the valley, transformed into a pristine white wonderland, with light mist drifting through. It's a view that instantly erases all fatigue. For photography enthusiasts or adventurers seeking an off-the-beaten-path Japanese winter experience, Yamadera is a must-add to your list. #Spring0yentrip Motozenkoji Temple has a quiet and calm atmosphere different from Zenkoji Temple in Nagano. It is located a little away from the town of Iida, and if you walk leisurely, you will find the temple grounds surrounded by trees. You will be greeted by a magnificent mountain gate and main hall, and there are many monuments and signs in the temple grounds indicating the connection to Zenkoji Temple, making it clear that this is "another Zenkoji Temple". When I went up to the main hall and put my hands together, I was impressed by the atmosphere, which was different from the one I felt at Zenkoji Temple in Nagano, as it was a simple and friendly place of prayer. Rather than a tourist spot, the atmosphere was comfortable as a place of faith cherished by the locals, and I was able to spend my time leisurely. I felt like I understood a little bit more about why people say "If you go to Zenkoji Temple, please visit Motozenkoji Temple as well."

This ramen shop is popular among locals in Iida City, Nagano Prefecture!! The soup for the Chinese noodles was golden and clear, and although I thought it might be a little thin, the flavor of the dashi was rich and very delicious🍜 The noodles were medium-thick, flat, straight, and soft. The yakisoba noodles had the same noodles as the Chinese noodles, but the texture was completely different!! Sangitei Honkan is a ryokan located on a hill in Lida, Nagano, Japan. This hotel used to be an old Showa-era castle building, but has now been converted into a hotel. It is still in good condition and is famous for its beautiful onsen (hot springs). The hotel consists of ryokan and European-style rooms, a hall, a restaurant, indoor and outdoor hot springs, and a bar for guests to use. Room rates start at 14,600 yen (excluding breakfast). Breakfast is included, and the price varies depending on the set meal you choose. Check-in time is 15:00 and check-out time is 10:00. We stayed in a ryokan room for 1 night. The room has futons (Japanese-style mattresses), yukata to change into and take a shower, tea set + snacks, and a private bathroom. However, once we arrived here, we had to try the famous hot springs. The hot springs here are separated into men's and women's areas. Guests who are not staying at the hotel can also use the services for a fee per visit. Before soaking in the onsen, you must cleanse your body first. The bathroom has free soap and shampoo, and a sauna. We went to the outdoor onsen, which is said to be the highlight of this hotel, and we were not disappointed. Soaking in the warm onsen and enjoying the view was really great. We went in the morning, and there were no other guests, so we were able to fully enjoy the beautiful view.
