Nara is a place full of history and cute animals. It boasts world-class cultural heritage sites and a group of incredibly adorable deer, making it a must-visit destination in Kansai! In this series, I'll share my journey through Nara, from ancient temples to bustling shopping streets, in two parts. 📍Horyu-ji Temple - The World's Oldest Wooden Building Our first stop in Nara is, of course, steeped in history! Horyu-ji Temple is the world's oldest wooden building, and the entire temple complex is vast. Walking through it, you can truly feel the traces of a thousand years of history. The buildings are incredibly well-preserved, and every detail is awe-inspiring. History enthusiasts will absolutely love this place! 📍Nara Park - Joyful Times with the Deer Next, we head to Nara's most iconic spot - Nara Park! The deer here are simply amazing and are the soul of Nara! However, these deer have various personalities. Some are extremely friendly and will rush over if they see you have deer crackers, while others are very aloof and won't pay you any attention, even acting a bit haughty 😃. You can buy deer crackers in the park, but I strongly recommend not feeding them all at once! We'll be visiting Todai-ji Temple next, where there are also many deer, so save some crackers to avoid any regrets. A Sudden Surprise - Nara's Festival! I thought today would be just an ordinary day in Nara, but I was lucky enough to stumble upon a festival! As I walked down the street, I heard lively sounds from afar. Moving closer, I saw a large crowd gathered, with people dancing in traditional Japanese clothing and others waving large flags. The whole street instantly came alive. It's a basic travel destination, but I think many people say it's their second visit. When I talk to people at hostels, many of them say the same thing. The first time was on a school trip. The five-story pagoda, the oldest pagoda in Japan, has a fifth story axis that is half the size of the first story, and this, combined with the deep eaves, gives it a sense of stability. Not many tourists go there so that you can enjoy the peaceful time. The whole ticket is ¥1500 for 3 parts visit, strongly recommended. You can see the oldest building in the west of the temple, including the main hall for Buddha and the 5 storey tower. Better sit down and feel the peaceful. Gangoji is located in the Naramachi district of Nara City. As a prominent ancient temple of the Nara period, it is part of the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara" UNESCO World Heritage site. Its roots trace back to Hokoji (Asuka-dera) in the Asuka period. After the capital was moved to Heijo-kyo, it became Gangoji, serving as a pivotal institution in the history of Japanese Buddhism. 🏯 Key Highlights · Gokuraku-bo Main Hall: The most iconic structure of Gangoji, with surviving sections that preserve architecture from the Nara period. · Zen Room: Connected to the Main Hall, this is a significant remnant of ancient temple construction. · Ancient Roof Tiles: The roof is adorned with extremely old tiles, some of which are believed to date back to the Asuka period, giving them immense historical value. · Site of the Miniature Five-Story Pagoda: The temple was once much larger than it is today, serving as a major Buddhist center during the Nara period. · Naramachi: Gangoji is surrounded by the traditional Naramachi district, allowing visitors to explore the temple alongside historic streets and Machiya townhouses. One particularly interesting thing about Gangoji is its direct historical lineage from Asuka-dera: Asuka-dera (Hokoji) → Relocation to Heijo-kyo → Gangoji If Horyuji represents the peak of Asuka-period Buddhist architecture, then Gangoji can be seen as the historical witness to the continuation of Asuka Buddhism into the Nara period. ⚠️ I visited in 2023 when Nara was celebrating the 25th anniversary of six temples and shrines being designated as World Heritage sites. They issued a joint pass for Toshodai-ji, Yakushi-ji, Kasuga Taisha, Todai-ji, Gangoji, and Kofuku-ji, which came with some small gifts. The temples provided beautifully designed Sange (flower petal-shaped cards). At Kasuga Taisha, you could choose two out of four small gifts, including postcards, oil-blotting papers, and mini-folders. As for why Horyuji wasn't included—it's because they had already celebrated their 30th anniversary! 😜

Horyu-ji Temple is particularly worth seeing because of its concentrated collection of Asuka period architecture, Buddhist statues, and crafts, offering a direct glimpse into the early artistic style of Buddhism in Japan. In 1993, the Buddhist architectural complex in the Horyu-ji area was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Compared to Todai-ji and Kasuga Taisha in Nara: Todai-ji → A grand Buddhist temple from the Nara period Horyu-ji → Ancient Buddhist architecture and art from the Asuka period Therefore, if you enjoy history, architecture, and Buddhist art, Horyu-ji is definitely worth setting aside half a day for.

Toshodai-ji, located in the Nishikyo district of Nara, is one of the most significant Buddhist temples of the Nara period. It serves as the head temple of the Ritsu sect, established by the Chinese monk Ganjin (Jianzhen) after his arduous journey to Japan. 🏯 Highlights of Toshodai-ji · Kondo (Golden Hall): The temple's most important structure, built during the Nara period. This grand hall is a masterpiece of ancient Japanese architecture, renowned for its majestic frontal columns and sweeping roof. · Kodo (Lecture Hall): Originally the Choshuden (Assembly Hall) of the Heijo Palace, this building was later relocated to Toshodai-ji. It stands as a rare surviving example of Nara-period palace architecture. · Statue of Monk Ganjin: Housed in the Miedo, this is a celebrated National Treasure portrait sculpture. It is open for public viewing around June 5th to 7th each year, offering a very precious opportunity for visitors. · Miedo: Once a residence for nobility in the early modern period, it now serves as the sanctuary for the statue of Ganjin. · Drum Tower, Treasure House, and Sutra Repository: These structures preserve a vast collection of Buddhist cultural heritage dating back to the Nara period. · Temple Grounds: The overall atmosphere is incredibly serene, providing a striking contrast to the bustling grandeur of Todai-ji. Toshodai-ji's unique significance lies in the history of Buddhist cultural exchange between China and Japan. After several failed attempts, Monk Ganjin finally arrived in Japan in 754, establishing an ordination platform in Nara and spreading the Ritsu sect. His arrival had a profound impact on Japan's Buddhist systems and culture, making the temple a vital historical witness to the cultural bridge between Japan and the Tang Dynasty. When compared with Horyu-ji: Horyu-ji → Asuka Period: The dawn of Japanese Buddhist architecture. Toshodai-ji → Nara Period: Ganjin’s mission and the flourishing of Tang culture.

Tokyo National Museum (TNM), located in Ueno Park, Tokyo, is Japan’s oldest and largest comprehensive museum. 🏛️ Why Visit? The Tokyo National Museum houses a collection of approximately 120,000 artifacts, including 90 National Treasures and 652 Important Cultural Properties (as of April 2026), with about 3,000 items on display in its permanent exhibitions. Listed as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level in 2013. In the early Zhenguan period of the Tang Dynasty, Linghu Yuangui, the magistrate of Baxi County, commissioned the carving of scriptures and statues on the cliff facing the river. Today, on the prominent boulder (8 meters north–south, 4 meters east–west) inside the Guanyin Hall, there remain 25 niches of early Tang Dynasty cliff carvings and about 4,000 characters of the "Diamond Sutra" inscribed in regular script. In the arched niches, one Buddha with two disciples, or one Buddha with two bodhisattvas and two disciples, are arranged in sequence. The 19th niche, "Amitabha Buddha and the Fifty-two Bodhisattvas," is the rarest: the main deity sits on a large lotus, surrounded by 46 small bodhisattvas, each riding a small lotus. It shares the same lineage as the Zhenguan 8th-year niche at Wolong Mountain in Zitong and the 7th-century murals at Horyu-ji Temple in Japan, serving as an early physical artifact of the Pure Land faith's entry into Sichuan. The 32 chapters of the "Diamond Sutra" on the west wall are carved into the cliff face, with grid lines as the background and elegant regular script calligraphy. During the Daguan period of the Song Dynasty, artisans regilded the Buddha statues; now, only traces of the old color can be discerned from the crevices. Inside the hall stands another 3.12-meter-tall round-sculpture stone statue of Guanyin. Originally a relic from the Tang Dynasty Kaiyuan Temple, it was broken in two when unearthed and was later moved here and rejoined. With shoulders 90 centimeters wide and a square crown adorned with three small niches, the statue features a masculine body with feminine facial features and a graceful posture, making it a rare masterpiece among movable Tang Dynasty large statues in Sichuan.

Kyoto has many great hotels—Aman hides in the forest of Daitoku-ji, the Ritz sits along the Kamo River, and Mitsui faces Nijo Castle. But after staying at Park Hyatt, my heart was set here. 📍 At the peak of Higashiyama, a step through a thousand years The hotel is located on Ninenzaka near Kodaiji Temple, on the site of the old Kyoto Yamato restaurant founded in Osaka in 1877, with a history tied to secret meetings during the late Edo period. Step outside and you’re on Ninenzaka, a 2-minute walk to Sannenzaka, 10 minutes to Kiyomizu-dera, and Yasaka Shrine and Hanamikoji Street are all within 10 minutes. Take a walk on Ninenzaka at 6:30 AM and you’ll have the entire stone-paved street to yourself—a completely different world from the crowded afternoon. 🏛️ Yu Tang Ji × Takenaka Corporation, top-tier design team The architecture was designed by Takenaka Corporation, a Japanese national treasure-level firm. The interior was created by Chinese-American designer Yu Tang Ji, marking his second Park Hyatt project in Asia after Shanghai. With 70 rooms, 60% of the floor area is underground to avoid height restrictions. Yu Tang Ji said he wanted to create a space with soul—you’ll understand once you stay; it never steals the spotlight. The hotel follows the Japanese aesthetic concept of “niwa-ya ichinyo” (garden and house as one). The strolling garden along the gentle slope of Higashiyama was crafted by Kodaiji’s resident gardener Yasuo Kitayama—31 stones from 300 million years ago were shipped from Colorado, paired with old stones from Horyu-ji Temple, plus a 360-year-old tea house. As you walk along the corridor, Yasaka Pagoda peeks through a gap, then hides again after a few steps—this rhythm is intentional. 🛏️ 70 rooms, every window a view The hotel offers only 70 rooms and 9 suites for ultimate privacy. Here's a record of my trip to Horyu-ji Temple, a World Heritage site and the oldest surviving wooden architecture in the world 📿 Special viewings are scheduled for October to November in 2026 as well, so please consider adding it to your list of autumn outings or travel destinations! · · 🪷 Special Viewings 🪷 These are held every spring (April 11–May 18) and autumn (October 22–November 22). It's a precious chance to lay your eyes directly on the hidden Buddha, the Yumedono Guze Kannon statue, said to be a life-size figure of Prince Shotoku! · Until the Meiji era, the Yumedono Guze Kannon statue was known as an absolute hidden Buddha (a Buddha that no one was allowed to see). It's said to be the life-size of Prince Shotoku, but standing at about 179 cm tall, it's roughly the same average height as the players of baseball's Samurai Japan and soccer's Samurai Blue...! He seems a bit too tall for someone from the Asuka period, but maybe he just had that much of an imposing aura (lol). · · 🪷 About the Halls 🪷 · Saiin Garan (Western Precinct) This is the world's oldest surviving group of wooden buildings, allowing you to actually experience architecture from the Asuka period! The Five-Story Pagoda is exactly as you'd imagine! The Buddhist statues and decorations inside are truly magnificent, so be sure to take a look 👀 If you look closely at the pillars of the Kondo (Main Hall), you'll see dragons coiled around them, adding a touch of playfulness 🐉 (It is said these dragons were added during restorations in the Edo period.) Also, pay attention to the murals in the Kondo, which carry the tragic history of being partially destroyed by fire in 1949. · · Daihozoin (Great Treasure Gallery) This is a museum where you can see a variety of treasures, but the absolute must-see is the Kudara Kannon statue! Take in the overwhelming presence of its approximately 209.4 cm height and its gentle smile ☺️ · · Yumedono (Hall of Dreams) The charm here is the elegant, regular octagonal structure, which some theories say served as the model for Azuchi Castle! It's a bit of a walk from the Saiin Garan, so make sure to give yourself plenty of time 🚶 · · 🪷 Access 🪷 Legend has it that Prince Shotoku commuted (?) on horseback from Ikaruga, where Horyu-ji is located, to Asuka, but for us modern folks, the train + bus combo is highly recommended! JR Horyuji Station is the closest, but it's a bit of a walk, so please make use of the local buses 🚍️ There are apparently buses from Kintetsu Tsutsui Station too! · The temple grounds are much larger than you might expect! Most of the paths are paved with stone or asphalt (though there's some gravel), so comfortable walking clothes and shoes are recommended 👟 · · 🪷 Limited-Time Events 🪷 In October 2023, there was a special illumination event in collaboration with the creative company NAKED, INC. The temple also houses over 2,300 items of National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties, including statues and artifacts, representing over 3% of Japan's total National Treasures.

At Himeji Station, I bought a round-trip bus and cable car pass. We drove 40 minutes to the foot of the mountain and took the cable car up. Two Japanese people stopped us to collect money: 600 to enter the temple on foot, 1,000 to enter by vehicle. We chose to walk. 1. First encountered the Bell of Compassion Established in October, Heisei 4 (1992). It was conceived and designed in the early Kamakura period. The bell is often rung as a signal for major Buddhist services, and its sound is meant to pray for world peace and the establishment of a pure Buddhist land. 2. Mountain gate After walking for 20 minutes, we reached the mountain gate, which is the Niomon Gate. It was rebuilt in the early Edo period in 1617 and is designated as a tangible cultural property of Hyogo Prefecture. It is a three-bay, single-entrance, eight-legged gate with a hip-and-gable roof, a classic mountain gate style of ancient Japanese Tendai Buddhist temples, with similar structures only seen in top ancient temples like Todai-ji and Horyu-ji. It serves as a boundary gate separating the secular world from the sacred realm of the temple; only after passing through this gate does one officially enter the temple grounds. This mountain gate is a famous filming location: "The Last Samurai," "Rurouni Kenshin," and "Gunshi Kanbei" all filmed scenes of ancient temples in the mountains here. The wooden mountain gate combined with the deep mountain cedar forest creates a strong Japanese ancient aesthetic. 3. Jyumyoin Temple After a few more minutes of walking, a small courtyard, somewhat resembling a chief priest's residence, suddenly appeared. I read the introduction. Jyumyoin Temple was commissioned by Daimyo Akamatsu Mitsusuke (1381–1441) to commemorate his daughter, who died prematurely at the age of 16. The main deity of Jyumyoin Temple is a compassionate statue of the Thousand-Armed Kannon. The statue is quite large and is believed to have been made to the life-size of Mitsusuke's daughter. The story of Mitsusuke's daughter's death illustrates the turbulent times of medieval Japanese history. In the first half of the 15th century, the region was ruled by the autocratic Shogun Ashikaga Yoshinori (1397–1441). Fearing betrayal, Yoshinori attempted to assassinate his close samurai and trusted retainers, including Akamatsu Mitsusuke, who controlled several domains at the time. Mitsusuke's daughter, while residing at the Shogun's mansion, learned of the plot and warned her father to be vigilant. However, when Yoshinori learned of Mitsusuke's daughter's actions, he ordered her death. Thanks to his daughter's tragic sacrifice, Mitsusuke was able to preemptively act. In the summer of 1441, he assassinated the tyrant Yoshinori during a Noh performance in Kyoto.

In honor of the 2026 taiga drama "Toyotomi Brothers!", the Ikaruga Cultural Properties Center is hosting a special exhibition on Katagiri Katsumoto, a contemporary of Toyotomi Hidenaga, and his castle, Tatsuta Castle. ✨️ Katagiri Katsumoto was a military commander born in Omi Province who served under the Azai clan and Hashiba Hideyoshi. He is also known as one of the "Seven Spears of Shizugatake" who fought in the Battle of Shizugatake (1583). In 1601 (Keicho 6), the year after the Battle of Sekigahara, despite being a Toyotomi clan elder, Katsumoto was granted over 24,000 koku of land in Heguri County, Yamato Province, and established a camp in Tatsuta and established the Tatsuta Domain. 🏯 After Katsumoto's death, the domain continued until the fourth lord, Tametsugu, but all died young, and the domain was abolished in 1655 (Meireki 1). Incidentally, the Koizumi Domain, founded by Katsumoto's younger brother, Sadataka, continued to exist until the Meiji era. ✍️ The special exhibition features a portrait (replica) of Katagiri Katsumoto, letters, and artifacts excavated from the ruins of Tatsuta Castle (Tatsuta Jin'ya), as well as artifacts from castles in the prefecture from the same period. The "Tatsuta Castle Ruins Spot Rally" will also be held during the exhibition period. Tatsuta Castle is thought to have originated as the medieval residence of the Tatsuta clan, but its actual condition remains unclear. 🧐 The exact structure of the jin'ya (camp yard) is unknown, but the "Old Map of Tatsuta Village," drawn in 1696 (Genroku 9), 40 years after the abolition of the feudal domain, reveals moats, earthworks, and a glimpse of the town layout. 💡 Tatsuta Jin'ya is located at the tip of a slight elevation extending south from the Yata Hills. It is approximately 350m square in size. The west and south sides are cliff-like, creating a height difference that Tamori would love. 😎 Residential development has made it no longer has the feel of a castle ruin, but there are moats (Higashimachi Pond and Heita Pond) that are used as reservoirs, and place names such as "Oite" and "Higashimachi" still retain their original names. Hakusan Shrine, located southwest, is said to be the guardian deity of the jin'ya's back gate, and when I visited, I was surprised to find that one of the shrines within the grounds was Shiota Shrine! I really felt a connection! ⛩ The Nara Highway runs north of the Jin'ya, and even today, you can enjoy the charming streetscape of rows of townhouses. At the western end, you'll also find "Nekozaka," a defensive street with a curved entrance. 🐈 When talking about the early modern period in Yamato, Yamatokoriyama, Takatori, and Uda Matsuyama tend to get the most attention, but there were actually quite a few small feudal domains, many of which were home to prominent families with ties to the Oda, Toyotomi, and Tokugawa clans. ☺️ Tatsuta, along with Koizumi, is also very close to Yamatokoriyama Castle Town, the setting of the historical drama.
