I have independently traveled through northern Tanzania to witness the wildebeest migration, as well as various parks in Kenya and Uganda. I was particularly eager to explore more remote parks like Katavi and Ruaha, which necessitate a reliable and well-equipped camping 4x4 since breakdowns are not an option for a solo self-driver in such isolated areas. Intu4x4 came highly recommended, and they completely met my expectations, ensuring a trouble-free journey covering 6,000 km on challenging roads in remote parts of western and central southern Tanzania. Additionally, the paperwork provided by Intu4x4 for crossing borders from Kenya to Tanzania was absolutely flawless.

Entry 30 USD/day foreign + 18% VAT (~35 USD), cashless gate takes card but bring USD cash backup; mandatory guide 15–20 USD/group/day, armed ranger 20–25 USD/day for Mwanihana summit, cash at Mang'ula HQ. Slept at Mang'ula guesthouse (25 USD). The mossy section: the first 2 km of the Sanje trail, where Newtonia and Cephalosphaera rainforest giants hold Frullania on every branch, Sphagnum in the stream-side rock pools, and the Sanje fall mist wets the moss at 8 a.m. I went in September—forest 24°C, fall base 19°C, moss dripping from the 100 m spray. Wore trail-runners; the trail is stone stair + root-mud, the fall base slick. Mistake: I tried Mwanihana summit as a day hike in October — 38 km round trip, mist by noon, turned back at Njia Panda, wasted 200 USD package. 2-day min. Second mistake: I didn't bring 20,000 TZS small notes — the guide fee was 20 USD, I had 50, he had no change, "tip me 30k then." Third: I swam in the Sanje pool — guide okayed it, but the Udzungwa ranger later said "bilharzia risk in slow pools, swim at the fall base only". Ask twice. Buy in Mang'ula: a 5,000 TZS chipsi mayai at the junction stall, not the 30,000 TZS lodge. Gear: a 25,000 TZS rain shell—Udzungwa rains sideways. Local rule: no drone (TANAPA bans), no off-trail without guide, no picking the forest pharmacopeia (every tree is medicine to the Pogolo), sign the Mang'ula register. The moss on the Newtonia root flare is the rainforest's sponge—step on the stair, not the green. Opinion: Udzungwa is "Galapagos of Africa" with a 35 USD day fee and most people only do Sanje. Should TANAPA build a 300 m boardwalk on the lower seep and fold a 5 USD moss fee in, or keep 35 USD flat? I'd boardwalk it. Would you pay 35 USD to walk a mossy rainforest to a 100 m waterfall with Sanje mangabey calls?

The moss on the lower rainforest (1,000–1,500 m) is Metzgeria on the Newtonia bark 1 cm thick, 18°C humid, a rufous-collared mountain babbler, Sanje Falls dropping 170 m through spray that wets the moss black. Above 1,800 m the forest thins to Podocarpus + Symplocus, moss on the campsite logs 2 cm, I ate a packed 8,000 TZS Mikumi mishkaki, watched a Sanje crested mangabey troop cross the canopy at 08:00. Mistake: I tried Mwanihana as a fit-day-hike — 2,080 m gain, 9 hrs, missed the 15:00 gate cutoff, ranger radio'd; 2-day with ranger or don't attempt the peak. Another: the 30 USD is card/cashless at Mang'ula — no TZS 50k notes, bring smaller or pay by phone. Would you pay 30 USD + 18 USD guide for the Sanje Falls mossy rainforest day, or commit to the 400–500 USD 3-day Mwanihana Peak package for the summit moss-camp?

Sailing across Lake Tanganyika to reach Gombe National Park was pure bliss. Spending three days trekking alongside chimpanzees and staying at Mbali Mbali Gombe Lodge was simply amazing. Unlike the Serengeti, these parks felt a lot denser and far less crowded. Wildlife was abundant, including hippos, elephants, giraffes, impalas, buffalo, zebras, a few wildebeest, African wild dogs in Nyerere, and kudus across all parks. I went to Isimira ruins from Iringa for 1500TSH on a shared bus. The price had gone up from the information a few years ago. As of 2023, the entrance fee to Isimira is 10 dollars or 23600TSH. I was told that there was no change, so I think it's best to bring the exact amount. I was asked for a guide fee of 5000TSH, but I declined and walked freely. However, this was a big mistake. There are no signs, so you can get lost even if you follow the directions. If you go alone, I thought it would be easier to find if you go counterclockwise from the starting point. (Don't go to the direction with two houses first) Or rather, it's better not to be stingy with the guide fee. I saw a lot of monkeys, but they didn't seem to be attacking me.
