Iwami travel guide and discussion

Desserts, sand dunes, pristine coastlines, starry night skies, Detective Conan, and scenic railways—it's hard to imagine all these incredible elements coexisting in a single city. Tottori is a wonderfully low-key and highly underrated hidden gem. Spending a 5-day, 4-night car-free vacation here is actually quite affordable and surprisingly convenient. ▌ How to Get to Tottori? Tigerair Taiwan offers direct flights to Yonago Airport. From there, you can take a bus or the JR line to Yonago Station, then transfer to the JR San'in Main Line to reach Tottori Station. If you travel by JR, the fare is around 3,500 JPY, and the journey takes at least 2 hours. If you're visiting in the summer, I highly recommend the "Tottori Sakyu (Sand Dunes) Bus"! From July 3 to October 23, 2026, the limited-time "Tottori Sakyu Bus," a 9-seater shared taxi, will be in service. I strongly recommend booking a spot on this ride. The ride costs 4,000 JPY per person and takes about 90 minutes. Solo travelers are totally welcome to book! It costs about the same as the JR train but is far more comfortable, much faster, offers a direct ride from the airport, and even stops at famous Detective Conan attractions along the way. There's honestly no reason not to take it! ▌ From Namba, Osaka to Tottori: A Perfect Combo Trip Tottori pairs perfectly with Osaka for a longer 6 to 7-day trip. You can fly into Osaka and fly out from Tottori (Yonago). Start by exploring Osaka for a few days, then hop on the incredibly cheap 1,000 JPY highway bus from Namba OCAT. To snag this one-way deal, you must board at Namba OCAT. You can reserve your spot online in advance, then pick up your ticket and pay at the station counter. · Namba OCAT Highway Bus: 3 hours, 1,000 JPY · JR Super Hakuto Express: 2.5 hours, 7,500 JPY Given the massive price difference for just an extra 30 minutes of travel, the bus is an absolute steal. The highway bus is super comfy, featuring spacious seats with plenty of legroom and privacy curtains between passengers. There’s also a quick pit stop at a rest area along the way for a restroom break. ※ Note: This special fare is exclusively for the Namba OCAT ⇒ Tottori Station route. It does not apply if you board at Umeda or Kobe. ▌ Where to Stay in Tottori? I highly recommend staying near Tottori Station. It offers the best variety of options at very affordable prices. For example, the Tottori Green Hotel Morris costs only about 2,000 TWD per night and boasts top-notch service and quality. If you’re looking for a more unique experience, consider staying near the Tottori Sand Dunes. For instance, "Sayu" offers a fantastic glamping experience. You can grab some deli food at AEON for dinner, or even rent BBQ equipment for a cookout. On clear nights, it's the perfect spot for stargazing. For Convenience ⭢ Tottori Green Hotel Morris (near Tottori Station) For a Unique Experience ⭢ Sayu Glamping (near Tottori Sand Dunes) ▌ Getting Around Tottori: A Guide to Local Transportation There are four main ways to get around Tottori: Local Buses, the 100-Yen "Kururi" Loop Bus, JR Trains, and the Tottori Tourist Taxi. Google Maps works flawlessly here, so simply fire up the app for easy navigation. · Local Buses (Numbered Routes) This is your primary mode of transport from Tottori Station to major sights like the Tottori Sand Dunes, The Sand Museum, and the Uradome Coast (Routes 33, 32). Board from the rear door and grab a paper ticket. When exiting from the front door, match your ticket number to the fare display board to pay. You can now use ICOCA (and other nationwide IC transit cards). Just tap your card or smartphone on the reader when boarding and alighting. · "Kururi" 100-Yen Loop Bus A handy loop bus for getting around downtown Tottori, stopping at city highlights like the Tottori Prefectural Museum, the Warabekan Toy Museum, and the Tottori Castle Ruins. A flat fare of just 100 JPY per ride, and it also accepts ICOCA and other major IC cards. · JR Trains You'll likely use JR trains if you're heading south of Tottori to places like Chizu or the Wakasa Railway. Keep in mind that some smaller stations in Tottori don’t support IC cards. I highly recommend buying paper tickets for a hassle-free trip. · Tottori Tourist Taxi For 6,000 JPY, you get 3 hours in a sightseeing taxi with 22 tailored routes to choose from, covering almost every must-see spot in Tottori. No advanced booking is required! Simply drop by the Tottori City International Tourist Support Center in front of the station, and the staff will arrange a taxi for you. Each stop has an allocated visiting time, which is usually perfectly paced. This is the ultimate travel hack for groups. Tottori's local bus schedules can be sparse, so hiring a tourist taxi will save you a ton of time. ▌ Top Attractions: What to Do and See in Tottori · Must-Try Tottori Food · Ooe Valley Farm | Soufflé Pancakes We unanimously agreed that this is the best food in Tottori. Their soufflé pancakes are incredibly fragrant with a rich, eggy flavor. They’re perfectly baked—neither soggy nor deflated—maintaining a wonderfully fluffy, cloud-like texture until the last bite. If you have a sweet tooth, make this a top priority. It's a wildly popular treat that easily rivals the famous dessert spots in major cities. |Getting There|Take the JR Inbi Line to Koge Station, then transfer to the Yazu Bus, or take Tottori Tourist Taxi Route 21. · Kaitensushi Hokkaido | Conveyor Belt Sushi The sushi here is deliciously fresh. The only downside is the massive crowd, especially during peak dining hours. I suggest visiting between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM to avoid the rush. Plus, they offer unlimited free-flowing miso soup during lunch! The Ekinan branch is quite close to Tottori Station—just a quick bicycle ride away. |Getting There|By car or rental bicycle (via HELLO CYCLING). · Ryudou | Beef Bone Ramen Tottori’s regional specialty is beef bone ramen, featuring a clear, savory beef broth infused with a peppery kick. This particular shop serves a bowl that’s light, refreshing, and never too greasy. I highly recommend adding a side of their delicious beef tendon rice—it’s absolutely worth it. |Getting There|Right in front of Tottori Station. · Top Attractions in Tottori Here are my personal favorites: · Tottori Sand Dunes (Best at Dusk) The ultimate quintessential Tottori experience, and it's easily accessible by bus. While the dunes are open 24/7, I highly recommend visiting at dusk. The weather is cooler, and the golden hour sunlight casts a mesmerizing, warm glow over the rippling sand. The sand here isn't sticky—it dusts right off with a gentle pat, making barefoot walks incredibly comfortable. The dunes also offer plenty of activities like sandboarding and camel rides. If you have the time, definitely give them a try! |Getting There|By bus (Routes 32, 33, or the Tottori Sand Dunes Line) or Tottori Tourist Taxi. · The Sand Museum Located right next to the dunes, this sand sculpture museum is an absolute must-visit. The theme changes annually, and this year’s spotlight is on "Spain." The exhibit beautifully showcases Spain's iconic architecture and vibrant cultural heritage, all crafted entirely from sand. Amazingly, after each exhibition, these intricate sculptures are broken down to be recycled for the following year's masterpieces. |Getting There|By bus (Routes 32, 33, or the Tottori Sand Dunes Line) or Tottori Tourist Taxi. · Uradome Coast Island Sightseeing Boat (Small Boat "Uradome-go") There are two boat tour options for the Uradome Coast: the standard Sightseeing Cruise (Meguri) and the smaller "Uradome-go" boat. I strongly recommend the smaller "Uradome-go." It allows you to weave through the rocky reefs and get an up-close look at the stunning sea caves and dramatic coastline. However, its operation depends heavily on the weather, so catching a ride requires a little bit of luck. Honestly, both options are spectacular. These cruises offer a rare chance to fully appreciate the rugged beauty of the Uradome Coast. Just remember to pop a motion sickness pill before boarding! |Getting There|By bus (Routes 32, 33, or the Tottori Sand Dunes Line) or Tottori Tourist Taxi. · Tottori Prefectural Museum This is a personal favorite of mine. Tottori boasts rich geology and wildlife, and this museum offers fascinating insights into the region's geological history. I recommend dropping by after visiting the sand dunes—it really deepens your appreciation for Tottori's unique natural landscapes. |Getting There|Take the "Kururi" Green Line Loop Bus. ▌ Suggested Tottori Itineraries | Flying in/out via Yonago, or flying in via Osaka and out via Yonago |Day 0| Arrive in Osaka, Depart from Yonago Thanks to the unbelievable 1,000 JPY highway bus deal from Namba OCAT, it's a great idea to spend your first 2 to 3 days exploring Osaka before catching the bus to Tottori. Since Kansai International Airport offers frequent daily flights, this route frees you from the limited Monday/Friday flight schedule to Yonago, giving you ultimate flexibility for your Tottori trip. |Day 1| Airport Arrival & Check-in at Sayu Glamping (Car Rental Recommended) 12:00 PM - Arrive at Yonago Airport via Tigerair IT724 (Mondays) 12:30 PM - Hop on the Tottori Sakyu Bus 1:30 PM - Stopover at Hokuei Town's Conan Town (Included in the bus route) 4:00 PM - Arrive at Tottori Station 4. 30 PM - Pick up a rental car at Times Car Rental near the station, and check in to Sayu 5. 30 PM - Enjoy the golden hour at Tottori Sand Dunes 8:00 PM - Late-night snack & breakfast run at AEON mall If you prefer a completely car-free trip, skip the rental and check straight into the Tottori Green Hotel Morris. You can easily rent a bike via HELLO CYCLING to shop at Don Quijote and grab dinner at Kaitensushi Hokkaido's Ekinan branch. |Day 2| Check Out, Uradome Coast & The Sand Museum 11:00 AM - Uradome Coast Island Sightseeing Boat 1. 00 PM - Explore Shirawara Coast and scenic coastal observatories 2. 00 PM - Visit The Sand Museum 5:00 PM - Return the rental car (Note: Rental shops in Tottori close early!) 5:30 PM - Check in to Tottori Green Hotel Morris |Day 3| Tottori Tourist Taxi Day I highly recommend picking one taxi route for the day. Since you've already seen the dunes, you can skip any routes that include them. Route 21 is a fantastic choice—it takes you to Ooe Valley Farm for those amazing soufflé pancakes, a spot that's otherwise a bit tricky to reach via public transit. Alternatively, the Saji Route (Route 22) is great if you want to explore further out, making the most of your private ride. |Day 4| Local Bus or JR Railway Adventure Here are a few great options to fill your day: · Hakuto Coast Route: Visit Hakuto Shrine, the Hakuto Coastline, and Tottori Conan Airport. · Downtown "Kururi" Loop Bus Route: Explore the Tottori Prefectural Museum, Tottori Castle Ruins, and the Warabekan Toy Museum. · Wakasa Railway Scenic Route: Stop at Koge, Hayabusa, and Wakasa stations for nostalgic railway vibes. Or, simply book another Tourist Taxi route to hit up even more spots with zero hassle. |Day 5| Departure 1. 00 PM - Board the Tottori Sakyu Bus at Tottori Station (Fridays) 2. 00 PM - Stopover at Hokuei Town's Conan Town 3. 50 PM - Arrive at Yonago Airport 5:50 PM - Fly out via Tigerair IT725 ▌ Where to Buy Souvenirs in Tottori There are a few key spots in downtown Tottori to pick up great souvenirs: · Tottori City Furusato Bussankan (Local Products Center) · 7-Eleven inside Tottori Station · Maruyu Department Store (near Tottori Station) · Tottori Sand Dunes Conan Airport The Furusato Bussankan currently offers an exclusive Pokémon collaboration shopping bag with a minimum purchase. Pokémon fans won't want to miss out on this collector's item! The 7-Eleven inside Tottori Station doubles as a surprisingly well-stocked souvenir shop—it's definitely worth browsing. Die-hard "Detective Conan" fans should definitely save their souvenir shopping for the dedicated gift shop at Tottori Sand Dunes Conan Airport. ▌ Final Thoughts | A Slow, Cozy, and Crowd-Free Getaway While Tottori isn’t overrun with tourists, its attractions are impeccably maintained and smoothly operated: From the 24/7 accessible sand dunes and the reliable coastal sightseeing cruises, to the brilliantly organized tourist taxi system. You never have to worry about getting lost or confused—English information is clear, and the staff are incredibly welcoming and experienced. The lack of massive crowds means you can actually take your time. There's none of that big-city anxiety where you feel forced to wake up at dawn just to beat the queues. The Tottori Sand Dunes are open in all their seasonal glory, waiting along the pristine San'in Coast for you to experience travel in its most unpretentious and purest form.

Crowned by the white dome of Sacré-Cœur, Montmartre is the village that became the heart of Parisian bohemia. This hilltop neighborhood was home to Picasso, Van Gogh, Renoir, and a generation of artists who changed the world. If you're seeking the Paris of painters and poets, this is your top spot! What Makes It Special: Montmartre has been a village since Roman times, but its golden age was the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when artists flocked here for cheap studios and creative freedom. Today, the neighborhood still feels like a village—cobblestone streets, hidden staircases, windmills, and the only remaining vineyards in Paris. At the top, Sacré-Cœur Basilica glows white against the sky, with a view across all of Paris. The area is touristy, but step off the main streets and you'll find the Montmartre that artists loved: quiet squares, ivy-covered houses, and the ghosts of creative genius! Must-Do Experiences: Climb the steps to Sacré-Cœur for the best view of Paris. Wander the Place du Tertre, where portrait artists still work (though it's touristy). Find the last working vineyard, Clos Montmartre. Visit the Musée de Montmartre to see where Renoir painted. Walk the Rue Lepic to see the Moulin de la Galette, a historic windmill. And end the day with a drink in a café that once served Modigliani or Dalí! Top Photo Spots: Sacré-Cœur from the steps below. The view of Paris from the basilica. The cobblestone streets and hidden staircases. The Place du Tertre with its easels. And the classic shot: you in Montmartre with Sacré-Cœur behind! Practical Tips: Montmartre is in the 18th arrondissement, accessible by metro (Anvers or Abbesses). The funicular (cable car) takes you to the top; it's included in metro tickets. Sacré-Cœur is free and open daily; the dome offers an even better view for a small fee. Go early morning (8-9 AM) to avoid crowds. The neighborhood is hilly; wear comfortable shoes. The best time is evening when the crowds thin and the lights come on! Key Precautions: The stairs to Sacré-Cœur are many; take the funicular if needed. The area is a pickpocket hotspot; keep valuables secure. The artists in Place du Tertre are aggressive; a polite "non, merci" works. The vineyards are behind gates; you can't enter without a tour. Some streets are steep; take your time! Pro Tip: The best view from Montmartre isn't from Sacré-Cœur steps—it's from the Square Louise-Michel at the base, looking up. And the most authentic street is Rue de l'Abreuvoir, with its ivy-covered houses. Montmartre isn't just a neighborhood—it's the soul of Parisian creativity! #montmartre #SacréCoeur #parisartists #placedutertre #bohemianparis #tripcom

There are not just sand dunes when you come to Tottori, there is already a lot of maritime entertainment on the Fuura coast alone. This time I spent HK$460 and I was able to canoe and snorkel there. The sea here is so clean that once you hit the water, it's all jellyfish and fish, and starfish are at your fingertips. Not to mention that the Fupo coast used to be connected to China, and the movement of plates separated the two places. This time the process of playing was very fun, the coach is not only attentive but also very carefully separated from our land here attractions, culture. #Tottori #TottoriTravel #Tottori Kanlight #Tottori Sand Dunes #Fuura #Canoe #Snorkeling

Day 1 Conan Town + Conan Airport (Tottori Sand Dunes Conan Airport) Recommended for fans of Detective Conan. Please refer to the previous post for the guide. Day 2 This post is about the itinerary for the second day. Wake up naturally in the morning. Tottori Sand Dunes + The Sand Museum + Uradome Coast 🚌Transportation guide: Recommended transportation app: Google Maps 1️⃣Tottori Station ➡️ Tottori Sand Dunes (Bus) I took the Kirin Lion Loop Bus. The fixed fare for adults is JPY 300. Board the bus from the back door and get off from the front door to pay (if you have a JR Pass, you can show it to the driver when you get off to ride for free). There are many specialty stores near Tottori Sand Dunes. You can take a look. 🌟Highly recommended Tottori Sand Dunes. Very impressive! 2️⃣Tottori Sand Dunes ➡️ The Sand Museum (Walk) Experience the amazing craftsmanship of artists from around the world. 3️⃣The Sand Museum ➡️ Uradome Coast (Bus) There is a torii gate ⛩️ on the island along the coast, but Uradome Coast is far from Tottori Station and is in a remote location. If you are in a hurry, it is not recommended to go. ⚠️When you board the bus, you need to take a numbered ticket from the machine at the back door. Then, when you get off, pay according to the price on the screen at the front door that corresponds to the number on the ticket. The bus fare is determined by the distance you travel. 4️⃣Uradome Coast ➡️ Tottori Station (Bus) ⚠️You also need to take a numbered ticket. Eat and drink near Tottori Station. There are many places to visit near Tottori Station, including many Tottori specialties and Detective Conan merchandise. 🌃Return to Osaka from Tottori in the evening. The Tottori trip is over, and the Conan hometown tour is complete.✅ PS: I used the JR Pass Kansai 5-day Pass, which is more affordable for a round trip from Osaka Station to Tottori Station.

About 10km northeast from the Tottori Sand Dunes along the bay coastline, Uradome Coast in Iwami Town, located at the northeastern tip of Tottori Prefecture, is a ria coast stretching about 15km from east to west, and with its complex topography, small islands of all sizes, and marine blue sea, it is one of Tottori's most scenic spots, · ike a painting reminiscent of Matsushima. I was honestly surprised at how beautiful the sea on the Japan Sea side of Tottori was! The clear tropical marine blue is comparable to the ocean of the tropics. By the way, this Uradome Coast is listed in a number of prestigious scenic spots, including: · San'in Kaigan National Park · 100 Views of Japan · 100 Best White Sand and Green Pine Coasts in Japan · 100 Best Beaches in Japan · 100 Best Tourist Sites in Japan during the Heisei Era · San'in Kaigan Geopark It is supposedly a hiking trail from Ajiro Port on the western end to Kamogaiso on the east, but when I visited in July 2021, there were spider webs everywhere and it was full of weeds, making it difficult to walk... It is unclear whether it was the off-season or if it just so happened to be before cleaning, but the views glimpsed from key points were full of spectacular views. At the "Shirowara Kaigan" observation deck in a corner of the eastern end of Uradome Coast, there was a memorable photo spot with a punning dad joke, "Take a photo!", which is typical of Tottori Prefecture. #tripDomesticTravel #TottoriPrefecture #Breathtaking views #Seaside views

Tottori is located in the San'in region of western Honshu, Japan, in the eastern part of Tottori Prefecture, facing the Sea of Japan. Rather than the city itself, it’s the dramatic sand dunes, rugged coastlines, ancient legends, and fresh seafood that truly steal the spotlight. Top Must-See Spots in Tottori ① Tottori Sand Dunes Tottori’s crowning jewel and one of Japan’s largest coastal dune systems, stretching approximately 16km east-to-west and 2.4km north-to-south. From the peak of the "Umanose" (Horse's Back) ridge, you can gaze out over the vast Sea of Japan and admire the beautiful wind-sculpted sand ripples. Visitors can also enjoy camel rides, sandboarding, and paragliding. ② The Sand Museum Located right beside the dunes, this museum features world-class sand sculptures. The exhibition themes change periodically, making it a perfect combined trip with the sand dunes. ③ Hakuto Shrine + Hakuto Coast The legendary setting of the "White Rabbit of Inaba" from the Kojiki. As the white rabbit is said to have helped the deity Okuninushi-no-mikoto unite with Princess Yagami, the Hakuto Shrine has become one of Japan’s most famous shrines for matchmaking and relationships. ④ Uradome Coast Located in Iwami Town, northeast of Tottori City, this is a stunning part of the San'in Kaigan Geopark. The coast is defined by unique rock formations, caves, and cliffs carved by sea erosion, all set against brilliant blue waters—offering some of Tottori’s most beautiful coastal views. ⑤ Tottori Nijisseiki Pear Museum Tottori is Japan’s premier pear-producing region. Here, you can learn about the cultivation history of the famous "Twentieth Century" (Nijisseiki) pear and even enjoy a tasting.

#sunsetplaces Uradome Coast is 20km east of Tottori city — bus from Tottori Station to Iwami (50min, ¥780 cash), then a 30min walk or local microbus to the olive slope above the coast. The "Iwami Ginzan olive slope" is a small terraced grove on the hill behind Iwami fishing port, planted as a 1990s revitalization project (free, no gate, no card needed, olive products sold at the port kiosk ¥500–1,200). I took the last bus out at 4:40 p.m. in November (sunset 5:05), climbed the slope. The olive trees — silver-leafed, 2m tall — caught the side-light so the whole grove glowed grey-gold, the Uradome islets (Tomiya, Nakanoshima) went black against a band of tangerine, and the Sea of Japan turned from steel to a thin line of fired copper. A ¥350 olive-oil softcream from the kiosk. Mistake: doing this in August at 4 p.m. — 35°C, no angle, the islets are washed out. Another: watching from the Tottori Sand Dunes (the famous spot) — Uradome's slope is 20km away and 10× better because the olives frame the sea. Rule: no picking olives (private grove, signs); the slope path is steep, no rail, wear trail shoes; last bus back is 6:10 p.m., miss it and you walk 20km or pay a ¥6,000 taxi. Opinion: Uradome's olive-slope dusk is the only Japan coast sunset where a Mediterranean tree edits a Japanese sea — the silver leaves do what no pine could. Discussion: when an introduced crop frames an ancient coastline, does the sunset feel imported or just translated?

JR West has a seriously underrated pass—the Tottori-Matsue Area Pass. For just 4,000 yen (about CNY 200), you can ride JR limited express and local trains unlimited times in the Sanin region for 3 days. CNY 200 might not even cover 3 subway rides in Osaka. But with this pass, you can explore from the Tottori Sand Dunes all the way to Matsue Castle, from Japan’s top garden to the monster town. Here’s a complete guide on how to use this pass, where you can go, and how to buy and use it. What this pass can do In short: for 3 consecutive days, unlimited rides on JR limited express, rapid, and local trains with unreserved seats within the Tottori-Matsue area. Key stations covered include popular Sanin cities like Tottori, Yonago, Matsue, Izumo, and Sakaiminato. Besides JR lines, you can also ride the Tottori Kirin Shishi loop bus and the Matsue Lake Line loop bus for free, saving on local transportation. Price: 4,000 yen for adults / 2,000 yen for children (ages 6–11). Each adult can bring up to 2 children for free. Day 1: Tottori—half desert, half sea The Tottori Sand Dunes are Japan’s largest sand dunes, stretching about 16 km east to west, 2.4 km at the widest point, and reaching 50 m at the highest spot. From the top, you see golden sand on one side and the blue Sea of Japan on the other. Next to the dunes is the Sand Museum, the world’s only museum dedicated to sand sculpture art. The theme changes yearly, showcasing works by top sand artists worldwide. If you have time, head east to Uradome Coast, part of the Sanin Kaigan National Park. Its clear waters and unique rock formations are perfect for sightseeing boat tours. Day 2: Matsue—watch the sunset in a national treasure castle Matsue Castle is one of only 12 original castles left in Japan and was designated a national treasure in 2015. Its black wooden exterior earned it the nickname “Chidori Castle.” From the top floor of the main keep, you get a 360-degree view of Matsue city and Lake Shinji. The Horikawa sightseeing boat is also worth a ride. The small boat cruises the castle moat through the old town, with the boatman using a bamboo pole to steer while sharing stories about Matsue. Be sure to visit Lake Shinji at sunset. It’s a famous spot for watching the sun go down, with the lake turning golden and purple and the distant Bride Island fading into the twilight. Many photographers come here specifically to capture the sunset. Day 3: Adachi Museum of Art + monster town, two sides of Japan in one day In the morning, visit the Adachi Museum of Art in Yasugi city. It has been ranked Japan’s top garden for years by the Journal of Japanese Gardening. Its dry landscape, moss garden, and stroll garden are like framed paintings from every window. The museum’s collection is impressive too, with over 120 modern Japanese paintings, including many by Yokoyama Taikan. In the afternoon, take the JR Sakaiminato Line to Sakaiminato, the hometown of Mizuki Shigeru, Japan’s master of monster manga. The entire street is the Mizuki Shigeru Road, featuring over 170 bronze monster statues. Street lamps, manhole covers, and the station are all decorated with “GeGeGe no Kitaro” motifs, instantly transporting you to a monster world. How to buy and use You can purchase an electronic exchange voucher (E-TICKET) for this pass through the JR West Travel mini program. After arriving in Japan, exchange the E-TICKET and your passport for a physical ticket at Sakaiminato or Yonago station to start using it. Note: Only foreign visitors with a “short-term stay” visa can buy and use this pass. Japanese passport holders are not eligible. The E-TICKET must be exchanged within 3 months of purchase. The Sanin region is one of the least “checked-in” but most rewarding places to explore slowly in Japan. It offers the real Sea of Japan, ancient castles, top gardens, and monster culture you won’t find anywhere else in Japan. For 4,000 yen, enjoy a slow 3-day trip through Sanin. It’s worth adding to your next Japan travel plan. Before too many people discover it, go see it for yourself. 📌 Information source: JR West Travel official mini program, where you can also get coupons.

I'm not exactly an anime fan, so I'm not too familiar with the storylines of Detective Conan or Yokai Village. However, as someone who absolutely loves collecting stamps and hunting down real-life anime locations—this is the perfect place to be! Day 1 Around Shirawara Coast, Tottori Sand Dunes Day 2 Izumo Taisha Shrine, Inasa Beach, catching the sunset at Lake Shinji in Matsue City Day 3 Around Yonago Airport: Yokai Village Before the trip, the spot I was looking forward to the most was the area around the Shirawara Coast. There are several scenic routes here where you can enjoy the ocean views. Some sections see very few people, making the trails a bit rugged. The path we took was partly a paved road used by locals to drive up and hike down, and partly a somewhat challenging trek because we wanted to get closer to the shoreline. I highly recommend assessing your own fitness level before taking it on. Most international tourists spend an entire day just visiting the Tottori Sand Dunes, but honestly, I highly recommend checking out the nearby Uradome Beach and the Shirawara Coast along the way. Guide to reaching Shirawara Coast: Take Bus No. 32 (Iwami-Iwai Line) to Ajiro, then enjoy a leisurely hike along the road all the way to the Shirawara Coast. "Where’s the best photo spot at Shirawara Coast?" Everywhere along the way! Just gauge your stamina based on the map and choose which parts of the coast you want to visit (feel free to use the landmarks as a reference for where we went this time) There was no one else on the trail, so it was incredibly peaceful, allowing us to fully take in the sound of the ocean waves crashing against the rocks. Figuring out the names of the islands along the Shirawara Coast with my travel buddies was loads of fun! Afterward, we walked to the bus stop on the outskirts of Iwami City (Uradome Kaigan-guchi) and hopped back on Bus No. 32 heading to the Tottori Sand Dunes. I won't bore you with the details of the rest of the trip since there are plenty of guides online. But if you have a Tottori Pass, you absolutely must visit The Sand Museum. The sand sculptures inside will blow your mind—they are truly spectacular!

The sunset over the ocean seen from Tottori Sand Dunes was magnificently beautiful, as if the sky, sand, and sea were one. With only the sound of the waves echoing against the sky that changed color from moment to moment, it felt like time was passing slowly. The crimson horizon and the silhouette of the vast sand dunes cannot be fully conveyed in a photograph; I was so moved that I simply stood there, captivated by the sight. It was a special moment where I could simultaneously feel the tranquility and power of nature.

August 13-14, 2025 < Day 1 > Lunch ⇨ Conveyor Belt Sushi [Hokkaido] Koyama Branch 🍣 They open at 11:30, and we arrived at the restaurant at 11:00! The parking lot was already almost full, with a 50-person wait for numbered tickets. It was incredibly popular. (Maybe because it was Obon, we waited an hour.) ※I recommend getting there early and getting a numbered ticket. ・Prayed at [Shirousagi Shrine] ⛩️ The stone rabbit statues with all the stones on them were so cute♡ →Stopped by [Shirousagi Roadside Station] right in front of us Taking a break to cool off and pick out some things to buy for the next day🎐 ・[Tottori Sand Dunes] Parking: 500 yen It was a strange feeling to see people in the distance as tiny as peas. Lol ・Made handprint sand art at Uradome Beach 🎨 There weren't many people around, so I was able to relax. ※After splashing around in the water for a bit and changing at the car, I got seven mosquito bites, so insect repellent was a must ⚠️ ・Had dinner and headed to the Tottori Sand Dunes at night to watch the stars 🏜️ Brought a picnic blanket and enjoyed a relaxing stargazing 🌌 We were lucky to see fireworks in the distance ✌︎ 🏨 Accommodation: Hotel Fine Tottori Sand Dunes (love hotel) →Booked late, and all the other accommodations were fully booked 😭 We had so much fun on Day 1 that it was late, so it all worked out in the end without worrying about check-in time ✌︎ < Day 2> ・Lunch⇨Yama no Okageya Hawaii Branch, a Tottori Wagyu Beef Specialty Restaurant Special Yakiniku Bowl (with soup and salad) It was so delicious 🤤💓 ・barcos cafe🍇 Fruit sandwiches (Muscat) for a luxurious dessert after dinner♡ A leisurely trip home, stopping off at interesting places on the way home. ~ Enjoying a trip to Tottori from Hyogo Prefecture ~ We went to the Tottori Sand Dunes in the afternoon and at night to watch the stars, but the atmosphere was completely different, and we both thoroughly enjoyed Tottori Prefecture.☺️ Thank you for reading all the way to the end♡ #TottoriTrip #CouplesTrip
