A new restaurant is often difficult to resist, especially when you are travelling and simply stumble across one. We noticed Yakiniku Ten while walking around Central Park Mall in Jakarta. It was still in its soft-opening period, looked modern and inviting, so we decided to give it a try. There were two options: buffet or à la carte. Since it was our first visit, we went à la carte. The restaurant itself made a good impression. It was clean, comfortable and nicely designed. But when it came to what mattered most — the meat — I thought the quality was fairly average. Nothing was particularly bad, but nothing really stood out either. Would I give it another chance? Probably. We were in Jakarta. Technically, we should probably have been eating Indonesian food. But Niku Niku Oh!! Kome was just opposite our hotel at Central Park — and we ended up having Japanese Hamburg for lunch instead. Was that a wasted meal in Indonesia? I don’t think so. The experience was actually quite enjoyable. The patties were cooked right in front of us, served beautifully juicy and cooked just right. Add friendly service, and what began as a convenient lunch across the road turned into one of those unexpected meals you remember from a trip. It also made me think about something. When we travel, there’s often this idea that every meal should be local. Indonesian food in Indonesia. Vietnamese food in Vietnam. Japanese food in Japan. And I understand why. Food is one of the best ways to experience a destination. But cities like Jakarta are also international cities. Japanese restaurants, Korean restaurants, Chinese restaurants and Western restaurants are part of how locals actually eat too. Business trips can easily become a routine of meetings, emails and getting from one place to another. But every now and then, the hotel changes the feel of the entire trip. That was my experience at Pullman Jakarta Central Park. The staff were warm, polite and consistently smiling. The room was clean and comfortable, the bed was easy to settle into, and even the standard room was more than enough for me. What stood out most were the small details. Housekeeping left a handwritten note one morning. Art pieces appeared throughout the hotel. Breakfast was good. I didn’t book Singapore Airlines Premium Economy because I needed more space. I booked it because there was one experience I hadn’t had. Over the years, I’ve flown Singapore Airlines in Economy, Business Class and even Suites. Premium Economy was the missing piece that would help me understand where it fits in the overall journey. This particular flight was also a slightly unusual way to experience it. I was flying from Singapore to Jakarta on the Boeing 777-300ER, and what I had was essentially a chance to experience the Premium Economy seat rather than the complete Premium Economy product. So there was no Premium Economy meal, priority treatment or amenity kit. What I really wanted to understand was the seat itself. And once I settled into 33A, the difference from Economy became quite noticeable. The seat felt wider and more substantial. There was more room around me, more personal space, and the additional recline made it easier to find a comfortable position. The leg rest was another small but meaningful difference. On a short flight to Jakarta, it wasn’t something I necessarily needed, but I could immediately see why it would matter much more after several hours in the air. That was probably my biggest takeaway from the experience. Premium Economy isn’t Business Class—and it isn’t trying to be. You still have a conventional airline seat. You’re still travelling in a shared cabin. There’s no lie-flat bed or the sense of personal space you get further forward. But compared with Economy, the improvements are concentrated exactly where you spend most of the flight: in your seat. More width. More legroom. More recline. A little more separation from the passenger beside you. None of those things sounds dramatic individually. Put them together over a long flight, though, and I can understand why Premium Economy has found its place. Would I pay substantially more for it on a short Singapore–Jakarta flight? Probably not. But on a seven-, ten- or thirteen-hour journey, the calculation becomes very different. And that was exactly why I wanted to try it. Every cabin tells a different story. The more travel experiences you collect, the better you appreciate the choices available—not because one cabin is automatically better than another, but because each serves a different traveller, a different journey and a different purpose. Day 1 I took an early morning flight from KUL to Jakarta and started the trip at By The Sea PIK. After exploring, I headed to my hotel in Thamrin to check in and drop off my luggage. Then it was shopping time! First stop, Tanah Abang, perfect for fabrics, clothes and affordable finds. After that, I headed to Blok M to explore the area and enjoy the evening atmosphere. At night, I went to Plaza Indonesia before ending the day with some local street food. A long day, but definitely worth it! Day 2 I started the morning with some shopping around Thamrin before making one last stop at Tanah Abang for those “I should have bought this yesterday” moments. 😂 After collecting my luggage from the hotel, it was time to head to the airport. I've put together a practical ranking for travelers: speed + coverage + cost of mobile internet + stability outside the capital. This isn't an official global index, but a guide for travel and remote work. 🥇 1. Singapore Lightning-fast home internet, a stable mobile network, and Wi‑Fi practically everywhere. You can upload heavy files faster than you can regret the price of your coffee. The main downside is that connectivity, like everything in Singapore, isn't the cheapest. 🥈 2. Malaysia A strong mobile network, affordable data plans, and a smooth work experience in Kuala Lumpur, George Town, and Langkawi. I look at the fare. One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that Singapore Airlines often uses geographical pricing. The same route can have very different fares depending on where the journey begins. More often than not, flights departing Singapore are priced higher than flights originating overseas. That’s why I almost always compare both directions before deciding which flight to redeem. This trip to Jakarta is a good example. Singapore → Jakarta was selling for S$341.20. Jakarta → Singapore was only S$181.10, which I booked through Trip.com. That’s a difference of S$160.10 for essentially the same route. So instead of redeeming both flights, I redeemed the more expensive outbound using the July Singapore Airlines Spontaneous Escapes promotion. Outbound · 5,600 KrisFlyer miles · S$65.20 in taxes Return · Cash booking through Trip.com · S$181.10 I also paid S$36.80 to upgrade to Seat 33A in the Premium Economy cabin on the Boeing 777-300ER. Just to be clear, this is only a seat upgrade. I’ll still receive the Economy meal, board with the Economy cabin, and won’t receive the additional Premium Economy benefits. I’ll share an honest review of whether the seat alone is worth S$36.80 after the trip. So how do I know if the redemption was worth it? The published cash fare was: S$341.20 Since I still paid S$65.20 in taxes, my miles only replaced the airfare portion: S$341.20 − S$65.20 = S$276.00 Then I calculate the redemption value: S$276.00 ÷ 5,600 miles = 4.93 cents per mile I personally estimate my cost of acquiring KrisFlyer miles at around 2.50 cents per mile. So in this case: 4.93¢ − 2.50¢ = 2.43¢ of additional value per mile That’s why this redemption made sense to me. I don’t redeem miles simply because I have them.
