The park currently only has the Niuheliang Site 1 Goddess Temple (currently closed for maintenance), Niuheliang Site 2 (the location of the large iron frame, large canopy, and national heritage monument), and the Niuheliang Site Museum open to the public. Other previously open sites at Niuheliang are currently closed. The Niuheliang Site is located at the border of Lingyuan City and Jianping County, under the jurisdiction of Chaoyang City, Liaoning Province. It belongs to the Hongshan Culture of the late Neolithic Age, dating back 5,500 to 5,000 years. The Niuheliang Site (core area) covers an area of approximately 8 square kilometers. Three hilly ridges, each about 10 kilometers long, run through the Nuluerhu Valley. It is named Niuheliang (meaning "Ox River Ridge") because the narrow Mangniu River meanders through it. The site contains a cluster of Hongshan Culture relics from the late Neolithic period, dating back approximately 5800 to 5000 years. These relics include temples, altars, and stone mounds, and have yielded precious artifacts such as sculptures, painted pottery, and jade objects. The Niuheliang Hongshan Culture site is of great significance in the history of Chinese archaeology. The discovery of a large altar, a goddess temple, stone mounds, and pyramid-like structures dating back approximately 5500 years pushed back the history of Chinese civilization by more than 1000 years, earning Niuheliang the title of "the new dawn of Eastern civilization." Lingyuan hanging oven flatbread is CNY 5 each and super flaky; Kazuo wantuo is CNY 10, and buckwheat geza is CNY 15. Eating my way through, I was stuffed for about CNY 130/day. Honestly, skip those flashy food streets on the main road. Duck into the alleys near the station instead. The barbecue skewers are thick, the heat is intense, and a CNY 10 grilled chicken rack will keep you busy for ages. The North Pagoda Museum is closed on Mondays and also takes a break from 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM. Don't blame me if you show up and it's closed ⚠️ There's no food inside the Bird Fossil Park! Bring your own water and snacks, or you'll suffer from hunger. The real fossils sold outside the scenic area are all fake—99% are replicas. Just look, don't buy 🚫 There are lots of mosquitoes on Fenghuang Mountain, so bring mosquito repellent. In September, the temperature difference between day and night in Chaoyang is large. Wear a short-sleeved shirt + sun protection clothing during the day, and add a light jacket at night, or you'll be freezing 🧥 I recommend chartering a car to and from the Bird Fossil Park; taking a taxi from the city isn't cost-effective. Chartering a car is about CNY 200 per day. Attractions in the city are concentrated, and a taxi ride usually won't exceed CNY 15 🚕 Drones are prohibited at the Hongshan site. Halls 17 and 18 each house a national-level artifact prohibited from leaving the country for exhibition, making them extremely valuable. Prehistoric civilization area: If you love history, don’t miss the exhibits from the Chahai site and the Niuliang Hongshan culture. Research shows it was imported from the Roman Empire via the Silk Road across the steppes, a precious witness to cultural exchange between China and abroad during the Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties. Standing on the summit, you can see the Daling River winding around the city. The Liao Dynasty ancient tower lit up creates a great atmosphere. Use a wide-angle lens from below and have someone stand midway on the steps for a perfect social media grid shot. The National Bird Fossil Geopark has a bit of a Jurassic Park vibe. With the boardwalk and fossil wall as a backdrop, wearing a straw hat while walking gives off a lively energy 🦖. Also, the reeds by the Daling River are perfectly green in July. Visit half an hour before or after sunset when the water sparkles gold. The Niuhuliang Hongshan Culture Site is about an hour and a half from the city. If you don’t drive, book a day car rental on Trip.com in advance. Don’t trust the “30 yuan to get there” offers from guys outside the station—they take detours and waste time. The UV rays in July are stronger than expected. Don’t skimp on hats and sun sleeves. Phoenix Mountain has many steps, so wear shoes with soft soles or your knees will hate you on the way down 👟. The “specialty shops” on the few ancient-style streets near Beita have inflated prices. If you want to buy aged vinegar and red dates, just go to a local supermarket—it’s half the price. Also, the 4D theater inside the Bird Fossil Park is fine for kids but adults can skip it. The ticket is expensive and the show lasts only five minutes. 🍜 Food recommendations Linyuan lamb soup is best in the morning. Pair it with freshly baked sesame flatbread torn into the soup.
