Jinping travel guide and discussion

Fengqing County, Lincang City, Yunnan Province, is known as the "hometown of Dianhong (Yunnan black tea)." We visited the historic Hongguishan Pagoda, nestled quietly on the summit of Hongguishan Mountain in Jinping Village, Fengshan Town. Although it's a little off the beaten path of typical tourist routes, it's a hidden gem highly recommended for history buffs and travelers seeking off-the-beaten-path destinations, offering a unique architectural style that has watched over this area since the Qing Dynasty, along with magnificent views from the mountaintop. 1. The History and Unique Architectural Beauty of Hongguishan Pagoda The Hongguishan Pagoda is a square, densely eaved, hollow brick pagoda (a brick-built pagoda) boasting over 100 years of history, built in the 14th year of the Guangxu era of the Qing Dynasty (1888). It is said to have been erected as a feng shui pagoda (literary pagoda) to pray for regional prosperity and the advancement of learning. The greatest appeal of this pagoda lies in its "unique form," which is extremely rare compared to other ancient pagodas in China. It has a strange, gourd-like silhouette, gradually widening from the first to the tenth floor, then abruptly narrowing from the tenth to the top floor, the sixteenth (or seventeenth) floor. On the first floor, a plaque bearing the characters "高挹华光" (Gao Yi Kui Guang) in semi-cursive script hangs above the body of the pagoda, and historical inscriptions are embedded on either side, allowing visitors to feel the weighty texture that has withstood the test of time up close. Each floor from the second floor upwards has arched window openings (ticket holes) on all four sides, and a bronze finial shines at the very top. Having survived a lightning strike and subsequent restoration, its present form exudes a certain dignity. 2. The Path to the Summit and Breathtaking Views The path leading up to the summit where the Honggui Mountain Pagoda is located is a pleasant hiking trail enveloped in tranquility. Surrounded by lush greenery and mountains, the rustling of leaves in the wind fills the air. The moment the ancient pagoda appears in the open space at the top of the mountain after climbing the quiet path is truly awe-inspiring. The contrast between the brick pagoda, soaring straight towards the blue sky, and the surrounding Yunnan mountain range is breathtakingly beautiful. Standing at the foot of the ancient pagoda, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the beautiful town of Fengqing and the vast tea plantations stretching into the distance, allowing you to immerse yourself in a deep sense of nostalgia and the romance of history, wondering if the people who walked this land before you also gazed upon this same view. 3. A Special Experience of Feeling the Winds of History in Silence There is none of the hustle and bustle of famous tourist spots in big cities. In this tranquil space where only the chirping of birds and the sound of the wind can be heard, you can spend luxurious time carefully observing the details of the ancient pagoda or capturing its silhouette from various angles with your camera. This is a perfect spot for a "grown-up trip," allowing you to reflect on the lives and spirituality of the people of Fengqing, who have lived alongside tea culture and feng shui since ancient times. 4. Practical Advice for Your Visit · Access: Taking a taxi or chartered car is the smoothest way to get from Fengqing County (the city center) to the foot of Honggui Mountain in Jinping Village, Fengshan Town. Since you will be walking along mountain trails and stairs from the foot of the mountain, it's a good idea to consider approaching by car or on foot in advance. · Equipment and Clothing: Since you will be walking on sloping paths, comfortable sneakers or trekking shoes are essential. It is recommended to bring drinks for hydration and a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the strong Yunnan sun. · Photography Tips: Early morning and twilight hours, when the oblique light enhances the texture of the bricks and the three-dimensional silhouette of the ancient pagoda. Taking a photo of the ancient pagoda with the Fengqing cityscape in the background from the mountaintop will result in a stunning composition. Fengqing in Yunnan Province is famous for its delicious tea and beautiful nature, but by visiting ancient pagodas nestled quietly in the mountains, you can experience the depth of the region's history and culture in a more profound way. If you want to escape the crowds and truly feel the Yunnan breeze and its long history, be sure to visit the Hongguishan Pagoda in Fengqing! #YunnanTravel #YunnanTourism #Lincang #Fengqing #HongguishanPagoda #AncientPagodasOfChina #HistoricalBuildings #HiddenGems #HiddenGemTravel #ScenicSpots #TripScenicClub

In the early spring, after a rain, I stumbled upon a "bitter feast" in a small mountain town in Jinping, Honghe. Locals smiled and said, "Spring bitter bamboo shoots are an invitation from the mountain god." I took a freshly dug bamboo shoot with some skepticism—peeling back the brown husk revealed emerald-green tender stems. A sniff revealed the fresh scent of morning dew and earth. The dipping sauce is the soul of the bitter bamboo shoot. The Hani people use chili paste, wild coriander, salt, and lemon juice to create a bowl of bright red and green dipping sauce, so vibrant it reflects your image. I imitated the villagers, dipping the bamboo shoot in the sauce and putting it in my mouth—the first second was bitter, like Chinese medicine melting on the tongue; but two or three seconds later, a sweet taste surged from deep in my throat, turning into a lingering sweetness, filling my mouth with the freshness of the spring mountains. "If you don't eat the first batch of bitter bamboo shoots, you've wasted the whole spring," a grinning uncle next to me said. I asked him why he preferred this bitter taste, and he pointed to the Ailao Mountains across the way, saying, "Look, it's so dry in winter, yet the bamboo shoots sprout from the cracks in the rocks. They've endured bitterness, so their sweetness is truly satisfying." Those words resonated within me. Yes, this wasn't just eating bamboo shoots; it was biting into the flavor of early spring, and incidentally swallowing the lessons the mountains and fields taught us: bitterness is the root of sweetness, and astringency is the garment of freshness. In the rain and mist, I picked up another bitter bamboo shoot with my chopsticks. This time, I tasted only the power of spring's growth.

Kunming South Railway Station Butterfly Valley Family Trip | Vienna Hotel + Butterfly Fruit Exploration Guide The most delightful surprise when traveling with kids to the Kunming area was discovering the hidden gem, Honghe Butterfly Valley! Located about a 3-hour drive from Kunming city center, it's perfect for a 2-day, 1-night weekend trip. Here's our practical guide: 🏨Accommodation Recommendation: Vienna International Hotel (High-Speed Rail South Station Branch) · Free shuttle service from the high-speed rail station is fantastic! As soon as we got off the bus with our kids and luggage, we saw the driver holding a sign waiting for us. · The family room has a super spacious 35㎡, enough room for two suitcases and a stroller. · The freshly cooked rice noodles for supper saved us from being hungry after arriving late. 🦋Butterfly Valley Exploration TIPS: 1. Best viewing period: May to July is the peak butterfly season. We went in early June and were lucky enough to see thousands of butterflies swirling around us. 2. Must-have items: Sun hat, insect repellent spray (available at the scenic area but expensive), telephoto lens (taking close-up photos with your phone will disturb the butterflies). 3. Hidden activity: Follow the rangers to find "butterfly fruit" (actually a tree species that larvae love to eat). It's like a treasure hunt for kids. 🚗Transportation Guide: · By car: From Kunming, navigate to "Honghe Butterfly Valley" via Shanshan-Kunming Expressway + Tianhou Expressway. · By bus: Kunming South Bus Station → Jinping County, then take a taxi to the scenic area (about 40 minutes). Helpful Tip: There are many hiking trails within the scenic area, so we recommend bringing non-slip shoes for children. The most heartwarming moment of this trip was seeing my daughter carefully reach out to let a monarch butterfly land on her fingertip. Nature truly is the best classroom; even a normally restless child could quietly observe butterflies collecting nectar for half an hour! 🌊 Shantou is not just "Xiaogongyuan + Nan'ao Island + Beef Meatballs = The Three Must-Do Chaozhou-Shantou Check-ins," but rather— ✅ At 5:22 AM, you stand at the old alley entrance in Jinping District, where the uncle selling guotiao soup lifts the clay pot lid: "This 'Pork Offal Three Delicacies'—the liver is from Chenghai, the noodles from Chaoyang, the broth from Hao Pu—us Shantou people serve the whole Chaozhou-Shantou region in one bowl." 🍜 ✅ Under the old lighthouse at Xidi Pier, a 93-year-old fisherwoman braids a "Safety Knot" with red string: "Back then, my grandfather went to sea with this knot—he didn’t wish for a full catch, only a safe return." ⚓ ✅ At the late-night Xiaogongyuan, the uncle hand-beating beef meatballs swings the meat with a snap: "Bouncy or not? Take a bite and you’ll know—life has no 'fake strength,' true skill depends on hands, heart, and ten years of morning light." 💪 💥 Here’s the highlight: 👉 Shantou is the only place in China that "has the most complete arcade building complex (Xiaogongyuan), the densest concentration of hand-beaten beef meatball workshops worldwide (over 217), and all the old brand kitchens open for reservation"—the “heart of Chaozhou-Shantou vitality”! Yet 94% of tourists only take photos of the arcades, unaware that the true Chaozhou-Shantou soul lies in the third oil star floating on the pork offal soup, in the seventh twist of the red string knot, and in the crisp echo of the beef meatball bouncing three times. ✅ I personally tested: 4 days of vibrant travel cost ¥1,360 | including round-trip high-speed rail (departing from Guangzhou/Shenzhen), 3 nights of unique accommodations (Xiaogongyuan Republic of China arcade homestay + Xidi sea view apartment + Shishan scenic courtyard), full public transport + shared bikes | no "expensive beef meatball gift box" traps, no "fake Chaozhou embroidery handkerchief" scams, no "Nan'ao-style fish balls at scenic spot entrances" rip-offs! ✅ All transport transfers, best breakfast times, hand-beating experience reservations, direct contact with shop owners... all come from my "5 personal visits (spring intangible cultural heritage tour, summer oyster pancake tasting, autumn market stroll, winter hot springs) + 23 days living and eating with 12 master craftsmen" firsthand data! 📍【How to play? Don’t just photograph the arcades, taste the salty freshness of the sea breeze】 🔹✅ Xiaogongyuan Morning Tea | Avoid crowded trendy spots, wait at "Uncle’s Guotiao Soup · 2nd bamboo chair · 5:22 sharp" ▫️🥄 He doesn’t use a menu, matches soup by your face: "Eyes tired? Have pork offal; just in love? Add duck blood for freshness; heartbroken? More pepper—to wake you up!" ▫️💡 Fun fact: The broth is simmered daily from 3 AM with 13 ingredients | Uncle says: "Emperors drink bird’s nest, we drink pork offal soup—both nourishing, just different methods." 🔹✅ Xidi Pier | Skip the tourist boardwalk, wait at "Old lighthouse east side banyan tree roots · 8:17 AM when the sea breeze starts" ▫️🪵 The fisherwoman doesn’t count with a phone, she reads the years by red string knot marks: "This mark is from 1958—see how old and new marks overlap? Like generations of unbroken bonds." ▫️✨ Bonus: Bring a copper coin! Tap the banyan tree three times—the fisherwoman will immediately teach you to braid a mini "Safety Knot": "Knot crooked? No worries—safety doesn’t follow rules." 🔹✅ Xiaogongyuan Night Market | Skip the trendy options, wait at "Uncle Chen’s hand-beaten meatballs · 3rd chopping board · 9:07 PM" ▫️🥩 He must snap the meat three times: "First snap wakes the meat, second wakes the tendons, third—wakes you!" ▫️🔥 Secret code: "Give me the ‘sea version’!" | Instantly adds a spoonful of satay sauce + two pieces of freshly fried seaweed | "Satay is the taste of the sea, seaweed is the spirit—you have to live like this." 🎫【Practical Tips | One sentence lifesaver】 ✔️ Transport | ✅ Subway not yet open | ✅ Bus ¥1 | Scan code to ride | ⚠️ Xiaogongyuan → Xidi | 10-minute walk | ✅ Nan'ao Island requires ferry | Book in advance via official WeChat "Shantou Culture & Tourism" ✔️ Tickets | ✅ Xiaogongyuan | ✅ Xidi Pier | ✅ Shipaotai | ✅ Guanshishan | all free! ⚠️ Nan'ao Island entry fee ¥45 | but "Xiaogongyuan," "Xidi," and "Hao Pu Ancient Port" are free year-round! ✔️ Safety | ✅ All beef meatball workshops have open kitchens | ✅ Taxis display "Chaozhou-Shantou dialect emergency cards" | Say "How much for these meatballs?" and the driver will instantly show you the card! 💬 At parting, the uncle handed me a small bag of dried scallop powder: "When you cook soup at home, add a spoonful—salty is the taste of the sea, fresh is the warmth of people, hot is proof you’re still alive." ✨ May you take away not just the arcade shadows, the bouncy beef meatballs, the gentle red string, but also the breeze passing through Xiaogongyuan, sweeping over Xidi, gently resting in your palm— Shantou, a city that stews a century-old arcade into a bowl of pork offal soup, brews the sea breeze into a phrase “Have you eaten?” and grounds all passion into a hand-beaten beef meatball bouncing three times—the most hardcore and tender original hometown of Chaozhou-Shantou in China. 📌 DM "Shantou" to receive: ✅ 2024 Shantou Old Brand Map PDF (including best daily breakfast times / hidden arcade photo spots / rainy day Plan B: Shantou Museum + Overseas Chinese Remittance Museum immersive theater) ✅ Chaozhou-Shantou Dialect 5 Warm Phrases Audio (scan to listen | includes "Hello!" Local Perspectives: Through the oral accounts of Hani elders and intangible cultural heritage inheritors, we restore the most authentic Hani life, breaking the public's superficial understanding of the Hani people and interpreting the inheritance and evolution of this ethnic culture. 🌿 Prologue: Beyond the Yuanyang Terraces—Understanding the Hani People's Millennium of Perseverance and Everyday Warmth When mentioning the Hani people, what comes to most people's minds is the magnificence of the Yuanyang Terraces—shrouded in mist in the early morning, layers of terraces unfurl like a ladder to heaven; at sunset, the golden waves of rice rise and fall with the wind, breathtakingly beautiful. But few know that these terraces, listed as a World Cultural Heritage site, are merely the "tip of the iceberg" of the Hani people's millennium-old civilization. Among the mountains of southern Yunnan, the Hani are an ethnic group with a thousand years of history. They are a "migrating people" and, even more so, "agricultural sages." From the foot of the snow-capped mountains on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to the deep mountains and gorges of southern Yunnan, they crossed thousands of miles and endured a millennium of migration. They reclaimed tens of thousands of acres of terraced fields in barren mountainous areas, creating the agricultural miracle of "however high the mountain is, the water is just as high, and the fields are just as high." They have clung to their language, customs, and skills, passing the spark of their ethnic culture from generation to generation through the passage of time, forming a uniquely distinctive Hani charm. Many people visit Hani settlements just to hurriedly check in at the Yuanyang Terraces, snap a few photos, and turn away, missing the true Hani culture—the mushroom houses hidden in ancient villages, the intangible cultural heritage skills passed down for centuries, the bustling folk festivals, the migration stories told by elders, and the survival wisdom and ecological philosophy concealed behind the terraces. They see the "outward beauty" of the Hani but fail to understand the "inner depth" of this people—the resilient migration spanning a millennium, the ecological wisdom of coexisting with nature, the steadfast craftsmanship passed down through generations, and the warm, everyday neighborhood companionship. This in-depth, 10,000-word post is the summary of my multiple deep dives into Hani settlements and my immersive experiences of Hani life. I will take the "millennium migration history" as the thread to guide everyone into the world of the Hani people: from the origins and journey of their migration, unlocking the survival story of this ethnic group across thousands of miles; from the reclamation and cultivation of the terraces, understanding the Hani's agricultural wisdom and ecological concepts; from the inheritance and innovation of intangible cultural heritage skills, feeling the Hani's craftsmanship and passion; from the details and everyday warmth of folk festivals, experiencing the most authentic Hani life; and from exploring niche hidden gems and providing guides, offering precise references for your Hani journey. After reading this post, when you walk into a Hani village again, what you see will no longer be just magnificent terraces, but a millennium-spanning ethnic epic, a life philosophy hidden among the mountains and waters. The Hani people have used a thousand years to write a legend of migration, perseverance, wisdom, and passion in the mountains of southern Yunnan, waiting for every traveler who loves cultural journeys to discover, understand, and carry forward. I. Ethnic Origins: The Origin of the Hani People and Their Millennium Migration Epic—From Snow-Capped Mountains to Southern Yunnan, Every Step Shows Resilience The Hani people are one of the unique ethnic groups in Yunnan and one of the historically long-standing groups among China's 56 ethnic groups, with a total population of about 1.633 million. They are mainly distributed in southern Yunnan Province, including the Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Pu'er City, Yuxi City, and the Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture. Among them, Honghe Prefecture is the main settlement of the Hani people, with counties like Yuanyang, Honghe, Luchun, Jinping, and Jianshui having a very high proportion of Hani population, forming a settlement pattern where "every village and hamlet is Hani." The Hani people have their own language (the Hani language, belonging to the Yi branch of the Tibeto-Burman language group within the Sino-Tibetan language family), but no written script of their own. Their history and culture are mainly passed down from generation to generation through oral epics, ballads, legends, and customs. Regarding the origin of the Hani people, although academia holds different views, combining the Hani oral epic "Hani Apei Congpopo" (meaning "The Migration Route of the Hani Ancestors"), historical records, and archaeological discoveries, the currently accepted view is: the Hani people originated on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau as descendants of the ancient Di-Qiang ethnic groups. After a millennium of migration, they finally settled in the mountains of southern Yunnan. During this migration, they gradually formed their unique ethnic culture and way of survival. This migration journey spanning thousands of miles is the most magnificent chapter in Hani history and the best testament to the resilient character of this people. According to the records of "Hani Apei Congpopo," the migration process of the Hani people was divided into multiple stages. Every stage was filled with hardships and challenges, yet it also nurtured the Hani people's survival wisdom and spirit of unity. 1.1 The Place of Origin: "Nuoma A'mei" on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau—The Spiritual Home of the Hani People In the Hani oral epic, their place of origin is called "Nuoma A'mei," meaning "the place where the sun rises." Based on historical research and geographical inference, "Nuoma A'mei" is roughly located in the eastern part of today's Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, which is the border region of Qinghai, Gansu, and Sichuan. This was the gathering place of the ancient Di-Qiang ethnic groups, and the ancestors of the Hani were a branch of them. They lived as nomads, moving about in search of water and pasture, living a life of "following the water and grass, migrating with the cattle and sheep." During the "Nuoma A'mei" period, the Hani ancestors had already mastered simple nomadic and agricultural skills. They raised cattle and sheep, planted cold-resistant crops like highland barley and buckwheat, and formed a preliminary settlement civilization. At the same time, they had a unique primitive religious belief, worshipping nature and revering their ancestors, believing in animism—that the sun, moon, mountains, rivers, grass, and trees all had guardian spirits. This belief also became the source of the Hani people's later ecological philosophy. According to the oral accounts of Hani elders, the land of "Nuoma A'mei" at that time was fertile with abundant water and grass. The Hani ancestors thrived here for a long time, living a stable life. However, with the growth of the tribe's population, combined with factors like climate change and tribal disputes, their living space gradually narrowed. To find a more suitable place to survive, the Hani ancestors embarked on their first large-scale migration. Although this history of origin has no written records, it has been passed down from generation to generation among the Hani people in the form of oral epics and ballads, becoming an important source of their ethnic identity. Today, during Hani festival activities, elders will still chant "Hani Apei Congpopo," telling the story of their ancestors' migration and passing on the resilient character of their people. On-Site Exploration: In an ancient Hani village in Xinjie Town, Yuanyang County, I met an 82-year-old Hani elder, Granny Li. She is a famous local inheritor of the epic and can flawlessly chant the core segments of "Hani Apei Congpopo." According to Granny Li, she learned to chant the epic from her ancestors since she was a child, and every lyric corresponds to a scene of her ancestors' migration: "We Hani people cannot forget our roots, cannot forget the path our ancestors walked. Chanting the epic is to let the future generations remember where we came from and how we arrived here step by step." Granny Li also told me that in traditional Hani beliefs, "Nuoma A'mei" is a sacred spiritual home. During the October Year every year, the Hani people hold sacrificial activities to pray for their ancestors to bless the tribe with peace and an abundant harvest. 1.2 The Path of Migration: A Journey of Survival Spanning Thousands of Miles and a Thousand Years The migration of the Hani people was not a brief movement, but a long trek spanning a millennium and dozens of generations. It is roughly divided into four main stages, each full of hardships and challenges. However, it also allowed the Hani people to continuously absorb the cultural essence of other ethnic groups during the migration, gradually forming their own unique ethnic culture. Phase One: From "Nuoma A'mei" to "Yani Yaga" (present-day southern Sichuan and northern Yunnan) Around the 10th century BC, the Hani ancestors set out from "Nuoma A'mei" and began their first large-scale migration. They followed the Jinsha River basin all the way south, crossing the snow-capped mountains and gorges of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. After several years, they finally reached "Yani Yaga," which is today's Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in southern Sichuan and Zhaotong City in northern Yunnan. This migration route was extremely arduous. Along the way, there were not only towering snow-capped mountains, turbulent rivers, and dense forests, but also fierce wild beasts and unfamiliar tribes. Many Hani ancestors died of hunger, cold, and disease during the migration. But the Hani ancestors did not give up. They united as one and helped each other; the young and strong were responsible for clearing the path and hunting, while the elderly and children were looked after by everyone

Discovered a little-known border town in Yunnan that’s almost heartbreaking in its quiet charm. In Butterfly Valley, hundreds of millions of Common Archdukes emerge from their chrysalises at once, creating a golden storm that darkens the sky. Wild hot springs at 40℃ bubble from stone caves in the tropical rainforest. The county’s average annual temperature is 17.6℃, making summer feel like living in a natural air-conditioned room. Best of all—so few tourists you can have an entire waterfall to yourself. After one visit, the lasting impression stays with you. Trip highlights China’s Honghe Butterfly Valley is a rare natural spectacle of butterfly emergence. Every May and June, hundreds of millions of Common Archdukes emerge in the bamboo forests of Ma’an Di Township. Wearing light-colored long sleeves, butterflies will even land on your shoulders. The Yingpanshan observation point offers the widest view, with over 100 million butterflies emerging at once. The butterfly museum is free and houses more than 320 specimens. Along the rainforest boardwalk, waterfalls cascade on both sides and tree ferns thrive, offering a new scene at every step. Pusuiyan Waterfall is a 262-meter-long figure-eight-shaped white water curtain. The local Hani people call it “Aoyang Oso,” meaning sacred water sprinkled by a fairy from the sky. Standing under the waterfall, the mist hits your face and the air is rich with negative ions. Nearby, Hani mushroom houses are scattered throughout the village, full of local life and charm. Ladeng Waterfall Group is a nine-tiered waterfall at the foot of Wutai Mountain. The total hiking distance is 6.5 km through dense, original forest that blocks out the sun. Each waterfall ranges from 60 to over 100 meters high, with roaring water and mist filling the air. Mengla Hot Springs are natural wild hot springs hidden in a valley on the China-Vietnam border. The 40℃ water flows from stone caves and is rich in radon and fluoride. Surrounded by tropical rainforest, banana groves, rubber trees, and ancient banyan trees, the area is shaded and lush. A 5 yuan village health fee applies. The public pools are clean. Standard rooms with air conditioning cost 80 yuan. The spring water is safe to drink directly. Jinshui River border crossing is a first-class port on the China-Vietnam border. On Saturdays, Vietnamese locals come carrying plantains and woven bags to the market. The air is filled with the scent of mountain produce and spices, and the sounds of bargaining in Vietnamese you can’t understand. Red-headed Miao, Hani, and Yao ethnic costumes flow through the crowd, more vibrant than any tourist site. Itinerary (3 days, 2 nights) Day 1: Depart Kunming and arrive in Jinping County in about 5 hours. Stay in the county town (guesthouses 60 to 130 yuan per night). Spend the afternoon exploring the town and enjoy a local ethnic meal for 30 yuan. Rest early to prepare for Butterfly Valley the next day. Day 2: Early departure to Ma’an Di Township. Visit the core area of Butterfly Valley (best at Yingpanshan) → Pusuiyan Waterfall (free) → Butterfly Museum (free). Stay in a guesthouse in Ma’an Di Township (100 to 200 yuan per night) or Pusuiyan Village. If time allows, hike the Ladeng Waterfall Group in the afternoon. Day 3: Spend the morning soaking in Mengla Hot Springs (about 49 km from the county town) → visit Jinshui River border market in the afternoon (busiest on Saturdays) → experience the natural bridge that spans two countries → return trip. Food recommendations Pineapple rice, passion fruit sour bamboo chicken, and longevity banquet are local specialties. Hani farmhouse cuisine includes fried bamboo worms for 30 yuan per serving. Tropical fruits are sold by the pile, making fruit freedom a reality. Street stalls offer a bowl of rice noodles for 8 yuan. Dai-style barbecue and sour soup fish are also worth trying. Travel tips Driving is the most convenient option (Manjin Expressway opened in 2022). Public transport is available from Mengzi by shuttle bus to Jinping, about 2 to 3 hours. Ma’an Di Township is 146 km from the county town, with many mountain curves. The township roads are narrow and in average condition; new drivers should drive slowly. Bring your ID card as border checks can happen anytime. The rainforest boardwalk is slippery; wear non-slip sports shoes. Bring insect repellent and sunscreen. Temperatures vary greatly between morning and evening, so bring a light jacket. Butterflies are fragile; catching them is strictly prohibited. Some roads may be at risk of landslides during the rainy season, so check the weather forecast before departure. Jinping’s charm isn’t in brochures but in the sound of butterfly wings fluttering, the mist rising from hot springs, and the bargaining in a border market you can’t understand. Go now before it gets crowded.

Seriously, who knows about this? When Yunnan is mentioned, people only think of Dali and Lijiang, but Jinping, this treasure destination, is truly underestimated. Nestled on the China-Vietnam border, there's a small town surrounded by butterflies and hot springs. With a forest coverage rate of 64.56%, it's so cool in summer it doesn't feel like Yunnan. The key is—it's uncrowded, pristine, and hasn't been flattened by commercialization. 🦋 Highlights · *China Honghe Butterfly Valley**—Jinping's ace, bar none. Every May to June, hundreds of millions of Archduke butterflies emerge. In the valleys, among bamboo forests, and by streams, butterflies dance in the sky, creating a "butterfly waterfall" spectacle that is simply divine. This year marks the largest outbreak in nearly a decade. **Butterflies are most active from 8–11 AM**. Wear light-colored long sleeves, and butterflies will land on you. **Strictly no catching**. Navigate to "China Honghe Butterfly Valley Scenic Area." Sanitation fee: CNY 10/person. · *Mengla Hot Springs**—Natural wild hot springs hidden in a valley on the China-Vietnam border. The water temperature is 50–60℃, gushing from rock caves. It's high-temperature radon-fluoride water, rich in minerals. Not overly commercialized, it retains its original wild charm. Soak in the open-air stone pools and watch the clouds drift by, or drink directly from the small spring eyes. Village sanitation fee: CNY 5/person. Navigate to "Mengla Hot Springs." The mountain road is challenging, drive slowly. · *Biaoshuiyan Waterfall**—Over 200 meters long, like a white khata hanging down. Next to the waterfall is a Hani mushroom house village, with terraced fields spreading out at the village entrance. It's a national 3A scenic area. You can play in the water below the waterfall, but be careful. · *Tiansheng Bridge**—"One bridge spans two countries." On the China-Vietnam border, stand by the boundary to admire the canyon scenery. Your phone time will change from 12 PM to 11 AM. It's a very ceremonial spot for photos. · *Pinghe Grassland**—A high-altitude meadow at 1,700 meters. Surrounded by green mountains, a river divides the grassland in two. You can camp, barbecue, and stargaze. · *Ladeng River Waterfall Group**—Hidden in the primeval forest, with 9 cascading waterfalls. The entire boardwalk is 6.5 kilometers long, and the air is incredibly fresh. Parking is free, sanitation fee: CNY 10/person. 🗓️ Three-day itinerary · *Day 1**: Arrive in Jinping County town → Afternoon explore the county town (multi-ethnic costume street photography is very atmospheric) → Evening eat chicken rice noodles + barbecue. Stay at Yunhao Hotel, conveniently located in the city center. · *Day 2**: Full day at Ma'andi Butterfly Valley (suggest arriving before 8 AM to see the butterfly outbreak) → Hike Ladeng River Waterfall Group → See Biaoshuiyan Waterfall + terraced fields → Stay in Ma'andi Township or return to the county town. · *Day 3**: Half day at Mengla Hot Springs (or visit Tiansheng Bridge) → Return trip. **The drive from the county town to Ma'andi is about 2.5 hours**, all mountain roads, so plan your time accordingly. 🍽️ What to eat · *Chicken rice noodles**—The soul of Jinping breakfast. **Hani dipping sauce chicken**—Dipping sauce made with over 30 spices. **Butterfly rice cakes**—Steamed glutinous rice mixed with wild flowers, CNY 5/each. **Passion fruit sour bamboo shoot chicken, pineapple rice, longevity feast**—Local specialties. **Mushrooms**—June to July is the season. There are many barbecue restaurants, and the chili is fragrant and numbing. ⚠️ Travel tips · *Transportation**: **Strongly recommend self-driving**. From Kunming, you can take the high-speed train to Mengzi first, then drive to Jinping. The Ma'andi township road has many gravel sections, so an SUV is more suitable. Public transport: Take a bus from Mengzi Bus Station to Jinping, then transfer to the Ma'andi special line (departures at 9:10 AM/12:00 PM, about CNY 40). · *Accommodation**: Yunhao Hotel in the county town is about CNY 150–300/night. Homestays around Mengla Hot Springs are CNY 70/day. Conditions in Ma'andi township hotels are generally basic. · *Gear**: **Non-slip hiking shoes are essential** (boardwalks can be slippery with many fallen leaves). **Spray mosquito repellent generously** (many mosquitoes in the mountains). **Bring a light jacket** (large temperature difference between morning and evening; short sleeves at noon, down jacket at night). ID card is a must (you will pass border checkpoints). · *Best time**: May to June for the butterfly outbreak season. Excellent for summer escape, warm in winter. · *Reminder**: **China Unicom has no signal in the mountains, China Mobile has full signal**. **Strictly no catching butterflies**. Do not use flash when taking photos. Mountain roads have many sharp turns, new drivers should drive slowly. Jinping is not a refined scenic area. It's pristine, remote, and even a bit hard to find. But the experience of hundreds of millions of butterflies taking flight simultaneously, soaking in 50℃ wild hot springs until you don't want to leave, and standing on a border line that spans two countries—this kind of experience cannot be found elsewhere. Go now before it gets crowded.

From Kunming to Pingbian, it’s just over 2 hours by high-speed train. When you get off the train, the mountain breeze from Dawei Mountain flows in, carrying the fresh scent of grass and soil. Pingbian Dawei Mountain is the top summer retreat in Honghe. Tens of thousands of acres of primeval forest layer upon layer, ancient trees shading the sky, thick canopy blocking the sun, with the forest temperature staying around 20°C year-round. Entering through the mountain gate, you’ll find wooden plank paths flanked by towering ancient trees, streams beside you, and waterfalls in sight. No need to deliberately look for photo spots—walking in the forest feels like stepping into a natural air-conditioned room. I walked on the plank path for over two hours and never once got sunburned—the entire forest blocks the sunlight completely. At a waterfall, a mist sprayed on my face, instantly wiping away the sweat. Sitting on a nearby rock was a person with eyes closed, motionless. After a while, they opened their eyes, glanced at me, and said, “Sitting here for half an hour is more effective than taking a nap.” Dawei Mountain has an extremely high concentration of negative oxygen ions, making every breath fresh and cool. The forest streams babble, waterfalls are in view, and the lush greenery fills your eyes, washing away all the summer heat. When the plane landed in Kunming, a message popped up on my phone: "It's 17℃ in Honghe Prefecture today." At that moment, I was in a car heading south from the airport, and the mountains outside the window were getting greener, the air wetter. Three hours later, I stood in the primeval rainforest of Pingbian Daweishan, with damp moss underfoot and towering evergreen broadleaf trees overhead, through which sunlight only filtered down in fragmented specks. Pingbian Daweishan is a "green pearl" on the Tropic of Cancer, with an average annual temperature of only 16.5℃. Ancient trees reach for the sky, streams gurgle, and mist swirls; deep within the rainforest, every breath is full of negative oxygen ions. Walking along the forest trail, I heard the sound of water. Turning a corner, a white ribbon cascaded down from the cliff – clear mountain springs tumbled over bluestones, and water vapor mixed with the fragrance of plants rushed towards me. Standing beneath the waterfall, the mist dampened my hair and clothes, but the coolness penetrated from my skin all the way to my lungs. My guide told me that further down from Pingbian, there's an even more magical place – Jinping's Ma'andi Butterfly Valley. Every July, hundreds of millions of Common Archduke butterflies emerge here, fluttering like waves across the mountains and valleys. They sometimes perch on visitors' shoulders, and sometimes flit past flying waterfalls and springs. I arrived at just the right time; tracing the Ladeng River upstream, layers of waterfalls unfolded before my eyes, the crisp mountain spring water wetting my ankles, and the mist mingled with butterfly shadows and the subtle fragrance of wild orchids. In the evening, I checked into a guesthouse by the terraced fields, with thousands of acres of Hani Terraces outside the window – the summer terraces had shed their spring shimmer, and the rice seedlings were growing vigorously, transforming into a continuous green carpet. After nightfall, the Milky Way hung low, with no urban light pollution, and the croaking of frogs and the evening breeze lulled me to sleep. 🚄 How to get there? Take the high-speed train to Honghe Station or Mengzi Station, then charter a car to Pingbian Daweishan (approx. 1.5 hours). Attractions in Honghe Prefecture are spread out, so chartering a car or self-driving is recommended. 🎫 Ticket Information Pingbian Daweishan National Park: approx. 50 RMB Ma'andi Butterfly Valley: some areas free Yuanyang Hani Terraces: approx. 70 RMB (summer special) 🗺️ 3-day, 2-night rainforest summer escape itinerary Day 1: Pingbian Daweishan Arrive in Pingbian, head straight to Daweishan National Park. June in Jinping, Yunnan: 100,000 Butterflies Dance Summer into a Fairytale in a 17°C Valley "Don't move! It's perched on your shoulder!" Photographer Liu shouted, camera in hand. A Golden Birdwing's blue-green wings fluttered on my shoulder, its scales landing on my windbreaker like scattered diamonds. June in Jinping Butterfly Valley transforms the border region's summer into a "fantasy mode"—in the bamboo forests of Ma'andi Township, butterflies are so numerous you can hear the rustling of their wings; the mist from Ladeng Waterfall carries butterflies like someone scattering flying flowers in mid-air; the water from Biaoshuiyan Waterfall crashes against the rocks, and butterflies can be seen flitting through the rainbow; the starry sky over Pinghe Grassland seems to fall low, and on a dandelion beside a tent, a sleepy-looking Common Bluebottle butterfly still rests. I spent four days with Uncle Li, the forest ranger, counting the colors of sunlight on butterfly wings, the arcs of rainbows in the waterfall's iridescent light, and the tails of shooting stars under the starry sky. Only then did I understand why they say, "Half of Yunnan's summer is in the rainforests of Xishuangbanna, and the other half is on the wings of this Butterfly Valley." The butterflies here are "wild"—the Golden Birdwing can grow as big as your palm, flying like a tiny kite, daring to land on your camera lens to "look at the photo." The waterfalls here are "alive"—the mist at Laden Waterfall flows, enveloping you in a fairyland of shadows. As butterflies pass through the mist, the water droplets on their wings are shaken off, cool and refreshing. The nights here are "quiet"—the stars on Pinghe Grassland are so dense they could form a road. Uncle Li said, "If you're lucky, you might see fireflies flying with butterflies, like little matchmakers carrying lanterns."—If you don't come now, the July rainy season will soften the mountain paths, and to reach the bamboo forest where butterflies are most concentrated, you might have to "dance the tango" through muddy puddles. 🦋 Butterfly Valley Core Area: A Rainbow Storm on Wings "The sun at 10 AM is the best! It captures the metallic sheen of butterfly wings!" Da Liu lay prone in the bamboo forest, his lens pointed at a cluster of butterfly eggs, the orange-red eggs looking like tiny beads scattered on leaves. As soon as we entered the core area, we were bombarded by butterflies. The Common Mormon's hindwings trailed with ribbons, making them look like dancers with flowing ribbons when they flew; the most common Common Ringed Butterfly was a yellowish-brown, thousands upon thousands resting on the ground, looking like a moving carpet from afar. 3 Tips for "Never Going Empty-Handed to Photograph Butterflies" · Wear a "Dark Waterproof Jacket": Don't wear floral clothes! Butterflies will mistake you for their "companions," swarming around you, making it difficult to get good shots and easily scaring them away. I was wearing a dark green jacket, and the butterflies barely paid any attention to me. Da Liu was wearing a floral shirt, and as soon as he entered the bamboo forest, he was "attacked" by a swarm of Common Ringed Butterflies, two of which landed on his glasses, making him so angry he almost smashed his camera. · Bring "honey water + shallow dish": Pour some honey water into the dish, place it on a rock, and butterflies will swarm around it within half an hour. We used this trick to capture a close-up of a Birdwing butterfly drinking water; its long proboscis dipped into the water like a straw, its wings spread wide, and even the veins were clearly visible. Visitors without this could only chase after the butterflies, getting exhausted and sweating profusely, and still couldn't get a clear picture. · Don't touch the "caterpillars on the leaves": Those are butterfly larvae! Uncle Li said some tourists curiously pinched them, getting poisonous hairs on their hands and itching for days. We saw a dozen or so black and yellow caterpillars crawling on a leaf, obediently walking around them. Uncle Li laughed and said, "These are baby swallowtail butterflies; they'll turn into butterflies in the fall." 🌊 Laden Falls: Butterfly Rain in the Mist "Stand on the rock! The rainbow is coming!" Uncle Li pulled me onto a flat rock. The water from Laden Falls plunges down from a height of twenty meters, and the mist wraps around us like a white veil. As soon as we were settled, several pink butterflies emerged from the mist, their wings dripping wet, flying erratically. When the sunlight pierced through the mist, two rainbows appeared. The moment the butterflies passed through the rainbows, Da Liu snapped thirty photos, saying, "This one could sell!" Two Secrets to "Seeing the Falls Without Getting Wet" · Bring a "wide-brimmed hat + waterproof phone case": The mist from the falls can soak you to the bone. A wide-brimmed hat will protect your face, and a phone case will protect your camera. One girl didn't bring a case, and her phone got wet as soon as she took it out. She cried, "All the butterflies I photographed this morning are gone!" · Choose a time "before 9 am": In the afternoon, the wind is strong, the mist is thicker, and you can't see anything. We arrived at 8 AM, and the fog was just knee-deep. We could see butterflies appearing and disappearing in the mist, like flying sprites. After 9 AM, the sunlight became stronger, and the rainbow was clearer, making the photos look like they had a filter on. 🌌 Pinghe Grassland: A Butterfly Dream Under the Stars "Don't use flashlights! They'll scare them!" Uncle Li whispered. Our tent was pitched next to a dandelion patch, and in the twilight, butterflies were still resting on the flowers, like sleeping little angels. At 10 PM, all the stars came out, and the Milky Way was so clear you could see stardust. Suddenly, a firefly flew past the tent, followed by another, huddling with the butterflies that hadn't flown away, their green and blue lights twinkling. 1 Tip for Camping Without Getting Cold · Bring a fleece sleeping bag + hand warmers: Jinping's daytime temperature is 17℃, but it can drop below 10℃ at night! I put a hand warmer on my waist and slept okay. Da Liu, finding it troublesome, didn't bring one and got up in the middle of the night, freezing. He sat up half the night wrapped in two windbreakers, saying, "Even the most beautiful stars can't keep out the cold." 🚗 3 Days 2 Nights Eco-Tour (400 RMB per person) · Day 1: 5-hour drive from Kunming to Jinping County → Transfer to a rural bus to Ma'andi Township (20 RMB) → Lunch: Hani ethnic farmhouse cuisine (fried bamboo worms 30 RMB/serving, very delicious) → Afternoon: Butterfly Valley core area for butterfly photography → Stay at a guesthouse in the village (80 RMB/night, plenty of hot water). · Day 2: 8 am: Ladeng Waterfall to see the rainbow → Noon: Biaoshuiyan Waterfall (free, 256-meter drop, incredibly impressive) → Afternoon: Pitch a tent on Pinghe Grassland (free, tent rental 50 RMB/tent) → Evening: Roasted potatoes (10 RMB/bag, amazing with chili powder). - Day 3: Early morning butterfly molting photography (Uncle Li leads the way; you can see caterpillars transform into butterflies) → Noon buy butterfly specimens (30 yuan each at a reputable store; avoid protected species) → Return trip. June Avoidance Tips · Don't believe "butterfly wings" sold on the roadside: They claim to be made of real butterflies, but they're actually plastic! One woman bought a string for 50 yuan, only to find it crumbled easily and threw it away in anger. Go to the cooperative in the township; they have legally bred specimens. · Drive slowly on mountain roads: Jinping has many winding mountain roads, and landslides are common in June due to rain. We encountered a landslide and waited two hours for the road to reopen. Uncle Li said, "It's better to arrive late than to rush." When leaving, our windbreakers still had butterfly scales on them. Da Liu's camera had over 2000 photos. Uncle Li gave us a bag of Hani honey, saying, "Soak it in water when you get home; it'll attract butterflies (just kidding)." As the car drove out of the valley, several butterflies chased after it for a while, as if saying, "Come again next time." Now, if you book a guesthouse on Ctrip, there are still rooms available in Ma'andixiang in June. You can choose a room with a window facing the bamboo forest, and you can be woken up by the sound of butterfly wings in the morning. The wings of Butterfly Valley are still waiting for you to photograph, and the rainbow of the waterfall is still waiting for you to step on. If you don't come now, once the butterflies have flown away, this fairy tale will have to wait another ten years.

True morning light is from 6:15 to 6:19, sunlight slanting through the three-tier waterfall and Hani stilt houses, light spots like gold foil drifting among mist and vines, guide hands you a pottery piece: "First stroke, write the character 'quiet,' then the light will come down."); ✓ Golden 4-minute mantra: "Squat at the shadow edge of the second waterfall pool on the east side, only photograph the boundary of light and mist—the light is not for gilding, it is for highlighting." (6:15–6:19, the mist flows like a living thing, one second late and the water loses its breath); → Morning: Surround "Mengla Hani Village Fire Pit" (not a performance-style song gathering! A'nin first teaches Hani language: "Yalalo—hello!" then guides you to touch the fire pit's three stones: "This stove stone is the foundation, this fire stone is the heartbeat, this heart stone is the home... right?"); ✓ Mengla Fire Pit Key: Answer one Hani greeting + touch the fire pit three stones + blow out and relight a pine resin lamp + strike the wooden drum three times + sing half a line of "October Annual Tune" ("October year, rice is ripe, fire pit warm, heart also warm..."), she hands you the drumstick: "This stick, you hold; this drum, you beat—the fire pit recognizes no strangers, only heartbeats."; → Afternoon: Walk the "Zhemi Baihe Ancient Tea Trail" (not a cement boardwalk! Guide leads you to touch bark + look at vines + smell branches: "This rough like sand is a thousand-year-old tree, this cracked like scales is a century-old tree, this smooth like wax is a newly grown tea seedling; this vine is as thick as an arm, this vine wraps twice; this dry branch breaks with a roasting aroma... right?"); ✓ Baihe Ancient Tea Secret: Identify 3 types of bark patterns + count 2 vine wraps + smell 1 dry branch roasting aroma + recognize 1 Hani tea sacrifice stone carving (engraved with "tea soul" characters and three wave patterns), he hands you a tea bud bookmark: "This bud, you pinch; this light, you keep—the tea mountain is not just a tea-producing place, it is a poem written by the earth."; 📍Day 2|Jinshui River Yao Cloud Sea + Old Meng Terrace Sunset → Morning: Climb "Jinshui River Yao Cloud Sea Viewing Platform" (avoid 8:00 AM tour groups! True sunset is from 5:44 to 5:50 PM, sunlight slanting through thousand-level terraces and Hani mushroom houses, light like molten gold drifting between fields and rice ears, guide teaches you to identify light: "This near gold is reflected light on rice tips, this mid orange is diffuse light on fields, this far purple is mountain shadows gradually dyed... right?"); ✓ Old Meng Terrace Key: Identify 3 layers of light and shadow (near gold / mid orange / far purple) + count 2 terrace ridge curves + hear 1 cowbell ring ("ding—ding ding—" two short and one long) + recognize 1 Hani star map terrace stone (engraved with Big Dipper and three terrace patterns), he hands you a terrace rubbing: "This shadow, you keep; this light, you remember—the terraces are not just land, they are a poem written by the earth."; ⚠️【Jinping Survival Guide】 ✅ Wild Ginger Flower recognizes people, not packaging: real branch petals hold dew, feel flexible when held, smell fresh and spicy; fakes are dry and odorless—A'nin teaches: "Pinch a small petal, hold on tongue tip for 3 seconds, only slightly spicy with sweet aftertaste is real." ✅ Ma'an Bottom real way to play: Don’t just take photos! Squat at the waterfall pool shadow edge and listen to water sounds: "Whoosh is wind passing, rustle is mist shaking, buzz is light moving—the waterfall is not water, it is the earth’s breathing apparatus." 🚫 Absolutely Don’t Do! ❌ Don’t use drones to shoot the three-tier waterfall from above at Ma'an Bottom → violates national scenic area airspace regulations, equipment will be confiscated; ❌ Don’t shine strong phone light directly on thousand-year-old tea trees in Baihe Ancient Tea Garden → violates Yunnan Ancient Tea Tree Protection Regulations, strong light accelerates bark aging; ❌ Don’t ask at Old Meng Terrace, "Can I take a rubbing of this star map terrace stone?" → guide will gently hold your wrist: "What’s imprinted on the stone is also in the heart—taking a rubbing means losing a star’s word."

Who would have thought! Discovering a treasure academy in the arcade old street of Shantou, it is both a century-old historical landmark and a highly artistic check-in spot~ Huilan Academy is hidden on Minquan Road in Jinping District. It was formerly the Hu Wenbao Building and once the site of the Xinghua Daily newspaper office. During the War of Resistance, this place was a "production site for literary weapons" 🌍 Overseas Chinese businessman Mr. Hu Wenthu ran the newspaper here to raise his voice and donated 300 million pieces of medicine to support the war effort. Every brick and tile is engraved with patriotism. Now renovated, it has become the Lingnan Academy, retaining the old sign of "Shantou Printing Factory," giving it a full vintage vibe. The European-style umbrella-shaped building exterior is highly recognizable. Stepping inside instantly transports you back to the Republic of China era. On the left side of the first floor is the newspaper exhibition hall, which is very enjoyable to explore. The recreated old street scenes are immersive, with old newspapers and printing equipment quietly displayed, telling the story of nearly 120 years of Shantou’s newspaper industry changes. On the right side is a branch library, with bookshelves full of Chaoshan culture books, including Chaoshan opera, cuisine, and overseas Chinese hometown stories. You can borrow books without a deposit, and the self-study atmosphere is excellent. The must-photograph check-in spots are all organized! Slowly walk up the retro staircase, with light and shadow streaming through wooden windows, every snap is a photo full of atmosphere; the second floor’s intangible cultural heritage exhibition area displays Chaoshan embroidery and paper-cutting exhibits, full of Chaoshan charm in the details; the third floor hosts an exhibition on the opening of commerce and industry, helping you understand the prosperous past of the "century-old commercial port." The cultural and creative area’s red peach cake-shaped souvenirs are both beautiful and meaningful, perfect as gifts. This place is not just a check-in spot but a warm city living room. On Friday nights, there are red film screenings, and occasionally you can catch the "Huilan Storytelling Stage," where local artists tell Chaoshan stories in dialect. Choose an afternoon to sit by the window, flip through a book on Chaoshan culture, with sunlight flooding the arcade old street, no noise in your ears, only the peaceful comfort of time. 📌 Practical Tips: Address: No. 2 Minquan Road, Jinping District Opening hours: May to October 9:00-21:00, November to April 9:00-18:00 (extended to 21:00 on Fridays and Saturdays) Closed on Mondays, free admission with no reservation required Don’t just rush for food when traveling in Shantou!
