Joetsu travel guide and discussion

Japan by train can look intimidating before your first trip. JR. Private railways. Subways. Local trains. Limited Express. Shinkansen. IC cards. Reserved seats. Non-reserved seats. And then there are approximately 47 different signs telling you where to stand. 😂 But once you understand the basic system, travelling around Japan becomes surprisingly straightforward. Here’s the simple version I wish every first-time visitor had before arriving: 🚆 1. LOCAL TRAINS = GET AROUND THE CITY These are your everyday trains. Think Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and other urban areas. They usually make more stops and are perfect for shorter journeys. You’ll encounter JR lines, subway systems and private railway companies depending on the city. 🚄 2. SHINKANSEN = TRAVEL BETWEEN MAJOR CITIES This is the famous bullet train. The major routes include: Tokaido: Tokyo → Nagoya → Kyoto → Shin-Osaka Sanyo: Shin-Osaka → Hiroshima → Hakata Tohoku: Tokyo → Sendai → Morioka → Shin-Aomori Hokkaido: Shin-Aomori → Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Hokuriku: Tokyo → Nagano → Kanazawa → Tsuruga Joetsu: Tokyo → Niigata Kyushu: Hakata → Kagoshima-Chuo There are also the Akita, Yamagata and Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen routes. So if your itinerary is: Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka you’re basically looking at the Tokaido Shinkansen. 🎫 3. IC CARD = YOUR EVERYDAY FRIEND Suica, PASMO, ICOCA and other compatible IC cards make short-distance travel much easier. Tap in. Ride. Tap out. They can also be used at many convenience stores, vending machines and lockers. But don’t assume an IC card works literally everywhere — some transport services and areas don’t accept them. Look for the IC symbol. 💺 4. SHINKANSEN SEATS You’ll generally see: NON-RESERVED Choose an available seat in the appropriate car. RESERVED You get an assigned seat. GREEN CAR More space and a more premium experience. Some Shinkansen services are reserved-seat only, so check the specific train before travelling. 🧳 5. BIG SUITCASE? PAY ATTENTION. This is one of the things tourists often discover too late. On the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen, luggage with total dimensions over 160 cm requires a seat with oversized-baggage space to be reserved in advance. So if you’re travelling with a huge suitcase: CHECK YOUR BAGGAGE BEFORE BOOKING YOUR SEAT. It can save you a lot of hassle at the station. 🎟️ 6. DO YOU NEED A JAPAN RAIL PASS? Don’t automatically assume you do. This is one of the biggest Japan train myths. Compare: Point-to-point tickets vs. Regional rail passes vs. Nationwide Japan Rail Pass If you’re mainly travelling Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka, a nationwide pass isn’t automatically the obvious choice. The right option depends on your exact route and how much long-distance JR travel you’re doing. 🍱 7. YES, YOU CAN EAT ON THE SHINKANSEN Long-distance trains such as the Shinkansen are different from crowded city trains. Buying an ekiben at the station and eating during the journey is part of the experience. On local and subway trains, however, eating is generally best avoided. 📱 8. CHECK THE ROUTE BEFORE YOU LEAVE Japan has multiple railway companies operating in the same cities. So don’t just look at the train name. Check: Station → Line → Direction → Train type → Platform → Destination Apps such as Google Maps, Japan Travel by NAVITIME and Jorudan can help with routes, fares and schedules. 🇯🇵 THE EASY WAY TO THINK ABOUT JAPAN RAIL Around the city → JR / subway / private railway Between major cities → Shinkansen / Limited Express Short everyday journeys → IC card Long-distance route → Compare individual tickets + regional/national passes Once you understand those four things, Japan’s train system suddenly makes a lot more sense. And honestly? The train system is one of the reasons Japan is so rewarding to travel independently. You don’t need to understand every railway line in the country. You just need to understand the route you’re taking today. 📌 Save this before your Japan trip.

Takada Castle Park was built on the ruins of Takada Castle, which was constructed over 400 years ago by Tokugawa Ieyasu's sixth son, Matsudaira Tadateru. The park is very spacious, covering about 50 hectares, and is planted with approximately 4,000 cherry blossom trees, mainly Somei Yoshino cherry trees. The scenery during the spring bloom, combined with the Takada Castle's three-story turret and the Aota River, is as picturesque as a painting. Especially at night, when the lights are lit, a dreamy atmosphere envelops the area. Along with Hirosaki Park in Aomori Prefecture and Ueno Onshi Park in Tokyo, it is known as one of Japan's three major night cherry blossom spots. In early April, the Takada Castle Million People Cherry Blossom Viewing Party is held in the park. As the name suggests, the park is bustling with people and a festive atmosphere. To tour the extensive Takada Castle Park, it is recommended to take a walk outside the castle's moat to Gokuraku Bridge during the day, then enter the castle for a visit. In the evening, shift to the Cherry Blossom Boulevard to enjoy the night cherry blossoms. During the cherry blossom viewing party, about 3,000 paper lanterns are set up in the venue. When it gets dark and the lights are turned on, the approximately 4,000 cherry blossom trees suddenly sparkle. The Takada Castle's three-story turret stands out like a protagonist on the stage, bathed in light. The cherry blossoms and the castle reflected in the moat create a dreamlike and unforgettable scene. Additionally, next to the Chureito Pagoda, there are song and dance performances on the cherry blossom stage to ignite the atmosphere, and near the Nishibori Bridge, there are a variety of food stalls, turning the park into a grand carnival. No wonder it attracts more than a hundred thousand cherry blossom viewers every year, from morning to night. Takada Castle Park Address: 44-1 Honjo-machi, Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture

This is the limited express "Shirayuki" that connects Niigata Station to Joetsu Myoko Station and Arai Station. It runs through the Shinetsu Main Line and Myoko Haneuma Line. It passes through the major cities of Niigata, including Sanjo, Nagaoka, Kashiwazaki, and Joetsu. On this day, I boarded the train at Niigata Station and got off at Joetsu Myoko Station. From there, I took the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Kanazawa Station. The weather was nice✨The Sea of Japan, which usually doesn't have good weather, is beautiful and green when it's sunny♪ From the Shinkansen, the Kurobe River and the Tateyama mountain range behind it looked beautiful🚅 The Sea of Japan is also beautiful on a good day. The Shinkansen looks complicated when you first start planning Japan. Nozomi? Hikari? Kodama? Reserved seat or non-reserved? JR Pass or individual ticket? And what happens if you bring a giant suitcase? 😅 The good news: you don’t need to understand every train in Japan. You just need to understand the basics before you book. 🚄 1. WHAT EXACTLY IS THE SHINKANSEN? The Shinkansen is Japan’s high-speed rail network connecting major cities across the country. For tourists, it’s especially useful for longer journeys such as: Tokyo → Kyoto Tokyo → Osaka Tokyo → Hiroshima Tokyo → Sendai There are multiple Shinkansen lines covering different parts of Japan, including Tokaido, Sanyo, Tohoku, Hokkaido, Hokuriku, Joetsu and Kyushu. 🚅 2. NOZOMI, HIKARI OR KODAMA? On the Tokaido-Sanyo route, you’ll commonly encounter: NOZOMI The fastest option, with fewer stops. HIKARI Slower than Nozomi, with more stops. KODAMA Stops at every station on the route and takes longer. For a typical Tokyo → Kyoto trip, Nozomi is generally the quickest choice. But here’s an important detail: If you’re using the nationwide Japan Rail Pass, Nozomi isn’t included automatically. JR Pass holders need an additional special Nozomi/Mizuho ticket to use those services. 💺 3. CHOOSE YOUR SEAT You’ll generally see: NON-RESERVED No assigned seat — sit in the appropriate non-reserved car. RESERVED Your seat is assigned when you book. GREEN CAR More space and a more premium experience. Some services are reserved-seat only, so don’t assume every Shinkansen has a non-reserved option. 🗻 4. WANT TO SEE MT. FUJI? If you’re travelling Tokyo → Kyoto/Osaka, a window seat on the right-hand side is traditionally recommended for views of Mt. Fuji when conditions and the route allow it. But don’t plan your entire trip around the view — clouds have their own itinerary. 😂 🧳 5. YOUR SUITCASE MATTERS This is one of the most useful things to know before boarding. On the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen, luggage with total dimensions over 160 cm requires a seat reservation with oversized-baggage space. There is no separate fee for the luggage space itself; you pay the normal reserved-seat fare. So if you’re travelling with a huge suitcase: CHECK THE BAG SIZE BEFORE BOOKING. 🎟️ 6. DO YOU NEED THE JR PASS? Maybe. Maybe not. Don’t buy it simply because you’re travelling to Japan. Compare your actual itinerary first. For a trip focused around Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, individual tickets or regional passes may make more sense depending on your route. If you’re covering a lot of distance across Japan, the nationwide JR Pass can become more useful. The important part is: ROUTE FIRST. PASS SECOND. 🍱 7. YES, YOU CAN EAT ON THE SHINKANSEN Unlike crowded city trains, eating and drinking are generally allowed on Shinkansen services. And this is your excuse to buy an ekiben — a station bento box — before boarding. Honestly, eating a bento while watching the Japanese countryside disappear outside the window is part of the experience. 📱 8. DON’T CONFUSE IC CARDS WITH SHINKANSEN TICKETS Suica, PASMO, ICOCA and other IC cards are extremely useful for everyday public transportation. But don’t assume that simply tapping your IC card means you’ve bought a Shinkansen journey. Long-distance Shinkansen travel has its own ticketing/reservation systems, although some services and setups allow IC-card-based boarding when properly linked or supported. Check the exact service before travelling. ⏰ 9. BOOK AHEAD WHEN IT MATTERS During busy travel periods, popular Shinkansen services can fill up quickly, and some services operate as reserved-seat only. Golden Week, summer holidays and the New Year period are particularly important times to plan ahead. If you know exactly when you want to travel, reserving in advance can make the journey much less stressful. 🇯🇵 THE SIMPLE SHINKANSEN CHEAT SHEET Tokyo → Kyoto/Osaka 🚄 Tokaido Shinkansen Shin-Osaka → Hiroshima/Hakata 🚄 Sanyo Shinkansen Tokyo → Sendai/Tohoku 🚄 Tohoku Shinkansen Tokyo → Kanazawa/Tsuruga 🚄 Hokuriku Shinkansen Hakata → Kagoshima 🚄 Kyushu Shinkansen And remember: Fast doesn’t mean instant. Japan is much larger than it looks on a tourist map, and even a Shinkansen journey can take several hours. That’s why I like planning Japan around regions, rather than trying to cross the entire country every other day. 📌 Save this before your first Shinkansen trip. Once you understand the routes, train types, seats, luggage rules and ticket options, the whole system becomes much less intimidating.

#easytravelpost Lake Nojiri (650 m) sits below Mt. Myoko (2,454 m) in northern Niigata, 10 km from Myoko-Kogen Station (Hokuriku Shinkansen to Joetsu-Myoko, then local bus). I based in Myoko-Kogen (¥9,000/night pension), took the morning bus to Lake Nojiri (¥500, 20 min), walked the west ridge trail up toward Sekkei-sawa. The cliff moss is the cedar ridge: Hylocomium and Sphagnum in the plantation drainage where the old-growth remnant survives, Fissidens on the basalt outcrop above the lake's north shore, and the cliff below the Myoko ski lift has Metzgeria on the seep—the lake is ringed by red pine and the moss glows at dawn. I walked the 3 km ridge at 06:00 in July, the lake below flat, Mt. Myoko's cone still snow-streaked, a Japanese serow crossing 100 m off (rare, froze). No facilities at the trailhead—carry water, the ridge has none. Mistake: I came in November and the bus to Nojiri ran once a day—Apr–Oct 4–5 times, winter 1. Another: I wore sneakers on the cedar-root section and slipped; the ridge is root-ladder, boots with grip. Would you walk Lake Nojiri west cedar ridge for the mossy lake view and Myoko cone, or rent a canoe and shoot the cliff moss from the water?

Spring in Joetsu is a whole vibe—especially when Takada Park transforms into a pastel dream for cherry blossom season! 🌸✨ Think endless fluffy blooms, super chill hanami (flower viewing) vibes, and epic snaps for your feed. My highlight? Wandering through Joetsu-Takadateramachi and just soaking up both cherry and peach blossoms—with a side of pear blossoms for that extra wow factor. Top Spot to Visit: Takadateramachi (Takada Park) Location: Teramachi, Joetsu, Niigata 943-0892 What’s cool: The park is famous for its night-time sakura illuminations—so stick around after dusk for pure magic under glowing blossoms! There are plenty of wide lawns, so bring your own snacks and picnic it up like a local. 🌸 Pro Tips: · Arrive early for prime picnic spots—locals snag them fast! · Perfect for solo travelers and anyone after close-up blossom shots (the colors are REAL). · Bring a light jacket—it gets chilly under the blooms, especially at sunset. Getting Around: Joetsu is compact—just hop on a bus from the train station or rent a bike for lazy blossom-spotting loops. Eats: Grab seasonal onigiri, sakura mochi, and festival snacks from stalls in Takada Park (don’t miss the amazake for a sweet, warm treat). Best Time: Early to mid-April, when the blossoms are peak and the park turns into a spring wonderland. ☀️ #JoetsuHanami #SakuraSeason #JapanTravel #CherryBlossoms #SpringVibes

Niigata Prefectural Ogata Water and Forest Park is a vast prefectural natural park surrounded by two large ponds (Unoike and Asahi Pond) in Ogata Ward, Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture. It consists of 7 zones that take advantage of nature, and you can enjoy a wide range of things from children's playgrounds to adults' walks. Main attractions and facilities Very popular "Holiday Square Zone": There is a large lawn square with a fountain, and it is an area where small children can enjoy water play and picnics to their heart's content. Fountains are usually open from late April to late October (10:00-16:30).

Visiting Kasugayama Castle in Niigata Prefecture is like stepping right into the legendary world of Uesugi Kenshin, the "Dragon of Echigo"! This impregnable fortress—ranked among Japan's Top 100 Castles—doesn't feature a flashy main keep. Instead, the entire mountain itself was transformed into a formidable military stronghold. As you hike up the steep mountain trails, the massive **earthen ramparts** and deep **dry moats** silently echo the fierce battles and tactical brilliance of the Sengoku (Warring States) period. When you reach the Honmaru (main keep) ruins at the summit or stand before the tranquil **Bishamondo hall**, you can gaze out over the vast Kubiki Plain and the azure Sea of Japan. Feeling the wind on your face, you'll be moved by that sweeping sense of sovereignty and the fiery resolve to defend "righteousness" to the death! This majestic mountain castle was built entirely upon natural defenses and its commander's devout faith. Free from over-commercialization and artificial touches, it's a must-visit for Sengoku history buffs. Tracing the footsteps of the "God of War" to experience his commanding presence and profound spirit firsthand is truly an awe-inspiring, soul-stirring pilgrimage!

During the Edo period (1603-1868), feudal lords known as "daimyo" across Japan were obliged to hold grand parades every other year, leading numerous samurai to the capital Edo (now Tokyo). These parades, called "Daimyo Gyoretsu," were extravagantly lavish to showcase the daimyo's authority. Today, many festivals throughout Japan recreate this spectacular scene. 🗡Matsue Samurai Parade The Matsue Samurai Parade reenacts the scene of Lord Yoshiharu Horio, who built the national treasure Matsue Castle, and his retainers entering the castle. During the beautiful cherry blossom season, a total of 200 samurai and princesses parade through the streets of Matsue. The most impressive part of this historical tableau depicting the prosperity from 400 years ago is Lord Yoshiharu’s speech and the victorious battle cries ("kachidoki") shouted by the samurai. You can join the practice sessions a month before the event and become part of the parade! 📍From Shirakigata Tenmangu Shrine to Matsue Castle, Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture 📅First Saturday of April 🗡Shizuoka Festival Shizuoka City is home to Sunpu Castle and was the residence of one of Japan’s most famous historical figures, Tokugawa Ieyasu, for many years. The Shizuoka Festival is a history-themed event held since 1957, inspired by the legend of Ieyasu leading his retainers to enjoy cherry blossoms. You can apply in advance to participate in the historical parade. Enjoy fireworks and cherry blossoms while attending the festival. 📍Sunpu Castle Park, Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture 📅Early April 🗡Uesugi Kenshin Festival Uesugi Kenshin was a warlord who ruled Echigo Province (present-day Niigata Prefecture) in the mid-16th century. He was a noble, just, and resolute war hero. The Kenshin Festival originates from a story where Kenshin invited the public to Kasugayama Castle every year to thank them for their daily hard work. #hellohalloween Rising silently from the forests of Joetsu City, the ruins of Kasugayama Castle are not just another historical site—they are the sprawling, hidden fortress of Uesugi Kenshin, the legendary "Dragon of Echigo" and one of Japan's most revered samurai generals. For a solo traveler, a visit here is a challenging pilgrimage into the heart of Sengoku history and breathtaking natural beauty. My Solo Itinerary: · Morning – The Ascent & Strategic Views: Started early from Joetsu, taking a taxi or bus to the base of Mount Kasuga. Began the vigorous hike up the well-marked trails. Reaching the main Honmaru (central bailey) was a physical accomplishment. Standing on the empty summit, surrounded by massive earthen walls and moats, I understood why this was considered an impregnable fortress. The strategic views over the Joetsu Plain and the Sea of Japan are a ruler's reward. · Afternoon – History & The Uesugi Shrine: Explored the vast network of secondary baileys and terraces that made this one of Japan's largest mountain castles. Descended to visit the serene Uesugi Jinja, a shrine dedicated to Kenshin, nestled at the castle's base. The attached museum houses fascinating artifacts, including armor and personal items. · Evening – A Warrior's Meal: Returned to Joetsu city and sought out a local izakaya or restaurant to try koshihikari rice (a Niigata specialty) and fresh seafood from the Japan Sea, reflecting on the legacy of the general who was both a fierce warrior and a devout Buddhist. Why Kasugayama Castle is Perfect for Solo Travelers: · A Personal Challenge: The hike and exploration are a deeply personal test of endurance and imagination, perfect for a solo adventure. · Atmospheric & Crowd-Free: You'll likely have the mountain trails and ruins largely to yourself, especially on weekdays. · A Historian's Dream: This is the ultimate site for any fan of Uesugi Kenshin and the Sengoku period. · Free to Explore: Access to the castle ruins is free, requiring only your own two feet and determination. Tips for Your Visit: · 🥾 Sturdy hiking shoes and water are essential. The trails can be steep and rugged. · 🗺️ Grab a map from the Uesugi Shrine museum to better understand the castle layout. · ⛰️ Check the weather. The summit can be windy and cloudy; a clear day offers unforgettable views. · 🚕 Arrange return transport. Taxis are not always waiting at the base. Kasugayama Castle isn't a restored tourist attraction—it's a sleeping giant. Walking its paths is like hearing the distant echo of war drums and Kenshin's battle cry. · -- Hashtags: #SoloJapan #UesugiKenshin #KasugayamaCastle #JapaneseHistory #SengokuPilgrimage #MountainHike #HiddenJapan #SamuraiLegacy

#hellohalloween Nestled in the mountains of the Aizu region in Fukushima, the ruins of Tōjō Fort (Tōjō-jo) tell a quiet, poignant story of ambition, family, and tragic fate. This was the first castle of the young Date Masamune, the legendary "One-Eyed Dragon," before his rise to power. For a solo traveler, it's a place to walk in the footsteps of a daimyo's beginnings and enjoy a profound sense of solitude. My Solo Itinerary: · Morning – Mountain Paths & Stone Foundations: I took a local train from Kōriyama Station to the small Funehiki Station, then a taxi to the site. The climb up the forested path to the fort ruins was peaceful, with the sound of birds and wind in the trees. At the top, I explored the impressive stone foundations and earthworks that outline where the castle once stood. The main honmaru (bailey) is a wide, flat area perfect for imagining the young Masamune looking out over his domain. · Afternoon – A Story of Family Strife: I visited the small but informative Tōjō Local History Museum at the base of the hill. The exhibits detail the fort's history and the dramatic story of Masamune's father, Date Terumune, who was kidnapped and killed here, an event that profoundly shaped the future "One-Eyed Dragon." · Evening – Reflection & Ramen: After descending, I found a local soba or ramen shop in the nearby town to warm up and reflect on the heavy history of the site—a story of political intrigue and the brutal realities of the Sengoku era. Why Tōjō Fort is Perfect for Solo Travelers: · Ultimate Solitude: You will likely have the entire mountaintop fortress to yourself, especially on a weekday. It's a deeply personal and atmospheric experience. · A Storyteller's Site: The power of this place comes from its history, not reconstructed buildings. It rewards imagination and a love for deep historical narratives. · A Physical Journey: The hike up is part of the experience, making the arrival at the ruins feel like a true accomplishment. · Off-the-Beaten-Path: This is a site for dedicated history buffs, far from the standard tourist circuit. Tips for Your Visit: · Transport is Key: Public transport is limited. Check taxi availability in advance or consider renting a car for the ultimate freedom. · Wear Proper Hiking Shoes: The path up is a true mountain trail and can be steep and slippery. · Check Museum Hours: The local museum has limited hours and may be closed on weekdays. Plan accordingly. · Fuel Your Imagination: Read about the early life of Date Masamune and the Date clan before you go. Knowing the story of his father's death here makes the visit incredibly powerful.

Nestled deep in the mountains of Kyushu, near Mount Aso in Kumamoto, lies the quaint hot spring village of Kurokawa Onsen. The traditional Japanese ryokans lined up in the village evoke a cinematic charm. The highlight of Kurokawa is undoubtedly the open-air bath tour (Nyuto Tegata). By purchasing a wooden pass, you can select and experience three different open-air baths, each offering a unique atmosphere with mountains, rivers, and forests as their backdrop. Immersing yourself in the warm spring water while feeling the mountain breeze is the ultimate relaxation. In winter, you can enjoy the romantic charm of a true Japanese onsen experience with warm baths surrounded by snow, while in summer, the open-air baths amidst lush greenery offer refreshing air. Pair the experience with a kaiseki meal at a ryokan in the evening, and your day will be perfectly complete. 📍 Location & Tips Access to Kurokawa can be a bit challenging via public transportation, so renting a car or joining a bus tour is recommended. The village is small enough to explore on foot, making it an ideal place for a quiet retreat. Staying overnight is highly recommended rather than a day trip. ✨ Looking for true relaxation on your trip to Japan? Kurokawa Onsen is the answer.

On my first trip to Niigata, I went to Itoigawa and Joetsu Nira 🙌 #NiigataTrip #Itoigawa #Joetsu #HokurikuTrip #JoetsuCityAquariumMuseumUmiGataRai #TakanamiPond #niigata #니가타여행

The day after the Nagaoka fireworks festival, I had about an hour to spare before returning my rental car, so I decided to stop by! At first, I thought it would be a small aquarium, but there was a lot more to see than I expected! It was amazing to be able to watch the dolphin feeding and training right in front of me! 🐬✨ I was also surprised by the number of penguins, more than I expected! They were so cute, waddling around together. There were also jellyfish of all sizes, and I was mesmerized for a while by their soft, floating movements in the tank. Every creature was so soothing, and time flew by. Since it was right around the time of the Paris Olympics, there were exhibits of fish in the colors of the French flag and goldfish inspired by the Japanese flag, which made me smile. 😊 What started as a quick detour turned out to be a memorable and wonderful experience.

The double-headed lotus, which brings happiness, is a very rare mutation that occurs once in every 20,000 to 30,000 flowers. There are legends that say it is an omen of good things to come, or that it will make you happy. The one in Takada Park was found in the Minamibori moat. This morning (20250722), I made a point of going to see it. It really is a lovely flower. There are many other varieties of lotus in bloom, which makes for a truly spectacular sight. If you have time, please come and enjoy the view. By the way, the best time to see lotus is in the morning.

#5月好去地方2025 The Kagai Ruins are part of the "Hita Ruins Group", a nationally designated historic site located in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture. It is only about a 10-minute walk from Joetsu Myoko Station, making it very convenient to reach. This was once a large settlement site from the Yayoi period to the Kofun period in ancient Japan. Because a large number of residential remains, shell mounds, tombs and artifacts were discovered, it was considered an important local stronghold at the time. The ruins area is now very tidy, with a wide rural landscape and trails. There are also stone tablets and explanation signs for the "Kagai Ruins" on site. It is a quiet spot where you can take a walk and learn about local history. Standing in the fields and overlooking Myoko Mountain, it is also interesting to feel the ancient people's site selection and living space. There is no entrance fee here, and there are few tourists, but it is a "hidden version of the ruins in Joetsu" that is worth visiting. 📍Address: Around Yamato 5-chome, Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture (about 10 minutes walk from the east exit of Joetsu Myoko Station) 🕰️Opening hours: open all day (no fence, free to visit) 💰Fee: Free #Kaguai Ruins #Hitai Ruins Group #Joetsu Myoko Station Attractions #Niigata Historic Sites #Japanese Yayoi Period #Joetsu Historical Walk #Joetsu City Attractions

#5月好去地方2025 Joetsu Myoko Station (Joetsu Myoko Station/じょうえつみょうこうえき) is an important transportation hub located in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture. It is jointly managed by JR East and JR West. It is the intersection station of the Hokuriku Shinkansen and the Myoko Tiaoma Line. It is a great starting point for sightseeing, skiing and historical and cultural exploration in the Joetsu area. The station is simple and modern in design. There are tourist information centers, shops, restaurants, car rental services and other facilities in the station, which are very convenient for tourism. The most attractive thing in the square in front of the station is the bronze statue of Kenshin Uesugi on horseback, which shows the heroic posture and momentum of this famous general in the Warring States Period. Because Joetsu City is Kenshin's hometown (where Kasugayama Castle is located), this statue also symbolizes the local respect for his historical status. From here, you can take a bus or rent a car to Takada Castle to enjoy the night cherry blossoms, Joetsu Aquarium, Kasugayama Castle Ruins, Myoko Kogen Ski Resort and other popular attractions. Especially during the winter skiing and spring cherry blossom seasons, the station is the busiest. 📍Address: Yamato 2-chome, Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture 🚄Route: Hokuriku Shinkansen, Myoko Tiaoma Line (JR East) 🚶Transportation: Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo for about 2 hours 🕰️Opening hours: Depending on the train schedule, most shops in the station are open until around 20:00 #Joetsu Myoko Station #Uesugi Kenshin #Uesugi Kenshin Horseback Statue #Kasugayama Castle #Takada Castle Night Cherry Blossoms #Myoko Skiing #Niigata Attractions #Hokuriku Shinkansen

#5月好去处2025 The Joetsu Aquarium is located in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture. The entire aquarium faces the Sea of Japan. It is a modern aquarium that opened in 2018. The biggest feature is the fusion of marine displays and regional characteristics (Sado coastal waters, Myoko Mountain area), and it has Japan's largest "Mazeran Penguin Exhibition Area" and a white whale tank overlooking the sea. It takes about 15 minutes to walk from JR "Naoetsu Station" to the aquarium. It was snowing that day and I walked there. Because of the snow, some places outdoors were closed. I like the color of the entire aquarium very much. I recommend everyone to come. 🕰️Business hours: 10:00-17:00 (final admission 16:30) will open earlier during peak season 💰Per capita consumption: Adults (high school and above) ¥1,800 #Joetsu City Aquarium Museum

A place to talk to the sea. A quiet impression you will encounter at Umi-gatari 🐬 The Joetsu City Aquarium Umi-gatari, located on the seaside of Joetsu City, is an open-air aquarium that is one with the Sea of Japan. There are plenty of attractions, such as the largest number of Magellanic penguins in Japan and a stadium where you can enjoy dolphin jumping 🐧 In particular, the underwater tunnel called the Umi-gatari Tube offers a fantastic experience of walking in the sea 🌊 The museum is spacious, and there is a space where you can quietly face the creatures. I visited on a solo trip, and the penguins' movements and the dolphins' performance soothed my heart. It is also perfect for a relaxing time with your partner. Free parking and access from a station within walking distance make it a great place for an "absolutely free trip". Please experience a trip to touch the stories of the sea and creatures at this place. A historical garden colored by the four seasons. Enjoy a quiet time at Takada Castle Park🌸 Takada Castle Park in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, is a historical park developed on the former castle site of Matsudaira Tadateru, the sixth son of Tokugawa Ieyasu. In spring, about 4,000 cherry trees bloom, and visitors from all over the country visit to see the cherry blossoms as one of the "Three Great Night Cherry Blossoms in Japan".🌸 In summer, the lotus flowers filling the outer moat are in full bloom, and you will be captivated by their beauty, which is said to be the best in the Orient.🌿 The park also has a restored three-story turret, a history museum, and an art museum, making it a space where culture and nature are in harmony.🏯 I visited on a solo trip, and was soothed by the quiet time that passed while walking through the tunnel of cherry blossoms. It is also perfect for a stroll with your partner. Admission is free, so it is also recommended as an "absolutely free trip".
