Kalispell travel guide and discussion

#kindnessontheroad #KindnessOnTheRoad #GlacierNationalPark #Bikepacking #GoingToTheSunRoad Riding the Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park is a cyclist's dream, but the climb to Logan Pass is brutal—a 10% grade for miles with hairpin turns. I was about halfway up, near the Weeping Wall, when I heard the dreaded hissss. A shard of volcanic rock had sliced my rear tire sidewall. I was stranded on a narrow shoulder with 100-foot drop-offs to my left and a line of RVs crawling behind me. A cyclist coming downhill, a local from Kalispell, stopped. He didn't just ask if I was okay; he immediately unpacked his repair kit. He took one look at the gash and said, "Too big for a regular boot." He proceeded to cut a small piece of rubber from an old tire patch kit, spread a thick layer of vulcanizing glue inside the tire, and then performed a "boot job" using a folded dollar bill as an emergency liner before applying the patch. He explained that the paper in US currency is durable enough to hold air temporarily. While he worked, he shared stories of riding the road before it was fully paved. He refused my cash offer, saying, "We look out for each other up here." He even lent me his mini-pump to get back to 60 PSI. Thanks to him, I limped my bike down to the Apgar Village bike shop instead of walking. If you bike in Glacier, carry a spare tube, a patch kit, AND a folding tire boot (or a dollar bill). And always ride with your lights on, even during the day. Have you ever had to perform a "field repair" on your gear to survive a trip?
