Day 7 Cont'd: After visiting the "Windy Place" in Fengyangyi, we headed to Dali Ancient City to check out the historical architecture and catch a view of Cangshan Mountain from afar. Walking through the city gate and heading up to the tower offers a panoramic view of the distant Cangshan Mountain and the historic buildings below. The architecture makes you feel like you've stepped onto the set of a period drama, traveling back in time to the ancient worlds seen in TV shows. Beyond the preservation of these historical sites, they have been infused with a modern commercial vibe, now housing trendy tea shops, sportswear stores, and more. Of course, local "intangible cultural heritage" eateries are also a must-see. I was even amazed to see the Big Four banks operating inside these historic buildings—truly a blend of history and modernity! 😄 It's a pity I can't fit all the photos here. Even though it started pouring while we were exploring the ancient city, it didn't dampen our spirits or stop us from taking photos as we walked. 😂 We ducked into a tea shop, ordered a drink ☕, and waited for the rain to let up, taking a moment to slow down and rest. We spent one day in Kunming as we traveled further up to Lijiang. We were quite surprised by Kunming and didn't expect that there was so much to do! Firstly, we visited the Yuantong Temple, which was soo impressive! it was definitely one of the coolest temples we saw in our China Trip so far. After that we made our way to the city park, which had a huge lake and many searoses. Continuing, we went shopping in one of the many street markets all across Kunming. The markets were sooo huge and you could by literally anything. Lastly, we went to eat dinner in a local restaurant.

Yunnan’s peak seasons are summer vacation and Chinese New Year. I specifically chose to visit in November and found it to be the most comfortable season in Yunnan—fewer people, blue skies, golden ginkgo leaves, red-billed gulls returning, and flights and hotels 30% to 50% cheaper than peak season. Here is an 8-day itinerary based on what you want to see. See ginkgo trees · Gudong town, Tengchong In mid to late November, Tengchong’s ginkgo village reaches its best viewing season. Over 3,000 ginkgo trees turn yellow at the same time, with the oldest trees over 600 years old. The whole village is covered in gold, with fallen leaves on rooftops, roads, and courtyards. It’s recommended to stay one night, as the color of the ginkgo leaves is completely different at dawn and dusk. See gulls · Cuihu Park, Kunming Every November, red-billed gulls fly from Siberia to Kunming for the winter. Cuihu Park is the best spot in Kunming to watch the gulls, with the lake covered in white gulls. The ginkgo avenue at Yunnan University also turns golden in November, on the same sightseeing route as Jinma Biji Archway. See snow mountains · Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Meili Snow Mountain November is the most beautiful time of year at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain—the snow on the peak is thickest and the weather is most stable. The water in Blue Moon Valley is the bluest, and the mountain reflections are clearest. At Shangri-La, Meili Snow Mountain has the highest chance of showing the “sunlit snow-capped mountain” in November, when the sunrise lights up the peak and the whole mountain turns golden. See ancient towns · Off-season in Dali and Lijiang In November, Dali and Lijiang have only one-third of the visitors compared to peak season. Cycling along the west shore of Erhai Lake is the best experience, a 40 km ride from Caicun to Xizhou, with the lake on your right and mountains on your left. Stay one night in Shaxi, where the streets are empty after 9 PM. Lijiang Old Town is more atmospheric at night than during the day, and Shuhe Ancient Town is quieter than Dayan. The top spot to visit in Kunming! If you love animals and, like me, refuse to visit typical zoos with cramped cages, this place is for you. I saw almost all the animals here for the first time in my life, so I was beyond thrilled. ❗️Important: Don't confuse it with the small, old city zoo. The park is located in the northeast of the city, inside Jindian Forest Park, about 7 km from the center. It spans a massive hilly area where many animals roam almost freely instead of sitting in cages. Here is everything I wish I had known in advance. 🚇 How to get there The park is located outside the city, so there are a few options to get there: 1. Taxi / Didi (the easiest way): Drops you right at the entrance. The fastest and most convenient option (costs 100-150 RMB from downtown). 2. Subway + Taxi: Take Line 2 to North Bus Station (北部汽车站), leave from Exit A, and grab a short taxi ride (~3 km) to the entrance. This way is cheaper but takes twice as long. 3. You can rent a car, but this is rather for those who already have driving experience in China. 4. You could also check the bus schedule, but the stops are far from the gates, and routes change, so the money saved isn't worth the travel time. 🎟️ Tickets & Prices Admission: Around ¥100 per adult. I bought mine online via Trip.com. Make sure to get the sightseeing electric buggy, which costs ¥60 per person. Without it, you'll have to walk for several kilometers between locations.
