After exploring the mall, I headed upstairs to discover a different side of Spring City 66: an elegant dining area with stylish restaurant entrances and a wide choice of cuisines. The photos show everything from Yunnan-style noodles and mushroom dishes to Korean-inspired dining, ramen and hot pot. Walking through Spring City 66, I was struck by the scale of the atrium: several levels of curved balconies, bright architectural lighting and polished floors that make the mall feel open and elegant. Luxury boutiques such as Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Celine and Tory Burch add to its high-end character. The photos also capture another side of the area. Just outside, evening food stalls bring a lively street scene, creating a fun contrast with the calm, refined interiors. 1. Dianchi Lake Cable Car + Cliffside Walkway The most impressive spot in the city is a route along a narrow path carved directly into the cliff at an elevation of 2,200 meters. Yunnan Ethnic Village A massive complex featuring 26 recreated authentic villages of Yunnan’s ethnic groups, showcasing traditional architecture, crafts, folk costumes, and traditional performances. 3. Immersive Show-Banquet After wandering through the stunning SUNAC art space, you can head to a banquet show: six courses of exquisite Yunnan dishes are served accompanied by live music, dancing, and historical drama in local costumes. 4. Guandu Ancient Town An atmospheric historical district within the city limits. It’s a pleasant place to stroll among ancient architecture, pick up local souvenirs and tea, and sample local street food. + Yunnan Provincial Museum Literally across the road stands the museum's futuristic building. In the summer, they even host a grand festival. 8. Yuantong Temple This Buddhist temple is said to be over 1,200 years old. I used Baoshan Railway Station, the main railway gateway to Baoshan City in western Yunnan Province. I arrived by overnight train from Kunming and traveled directly into the city, so I'd like to focus on describing the station's facilities and access. First, what impressed me was the station's exterior. As a relatively new station, having opened in 2022, it was very modern and large, a magnificent building unlike what you'd expect from a station in a Chinese provincial city. The design, with its extensive use of glass, gives it a sense of openness and a strong presence as a regional gateway. It's clear that it's a well-maintained station for the important Da Rui Railway. This time, I traveled by overnight train from Kunming. Since my train arrived in the morning, I could see the Yunnan mountains gradually brightening from the train window, creating a truly evocative travel experience. Seeing the train stopped at the platform again, I felt the scale typical of Chinese railways, and a sense of accomplishment after completing a long journey. The passageway from the train to the exit was quite wide, designed to ensure a smooth flow of people. As it's a relatively new station, it was very clean overall, and the floors and walls were quite spotless. Despite being a regional station, it had the atmosphere of a large airport, reflecting the rapid development of China's railway infrastructure. Immediately upon exiting the ticket gate, I noticed the bus and car arrangement counters. This seems like a very convenient facility for tourists and first-time visitors. It would also be useful for travelers heading to the surrounding Tengchong area, not just Baoshan city. While you can sometimes be bothered by touts outside train stations in China, having official counters like this provides a sense of security. Personally, I was intrigued by the Yunnan coffee experience center located inside the station. The Baoshan area has recently gained attention as a coffee-producing region in China, and having a facility promoting Yunnan coffee culture inside the station is an interesting point. Unfortunately, it was closed when I arrived early in the morning, but it would be a very interesting spot if it were open. In recent years, the Baoshan area has become known as a coffee-producing region within China. The city bus timetable was also clearly displayed outside the station. Many regional cities in China lack subways, but they have extensive bus networks. While taxis and DiDi are convenient, local buses are a viable option for budget-conscious travelers. Overall, Baoshan Station was a very user-friendly station, boasting the three advantages of being new, clean, and easily accessible. I believe it will become increasingly important as a transit point for journeys to western Yunnan and the Myanmar border. Yunnan Mushuihua Wild Mushroom Trade Center One of the culinary experiences you absolutely must try in Kunming, Yunnan Province, is the region’s signature "Wild Mushroom Hot Pot." On this trip, I visited "Yingyuan Wild Mushroom Hot Pot," a popular spot even among locals. Rather than being a typical tourist trap, it’s an authentic restaurant where many locals dine, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in Yunnan’s rich food culture. The restaurant’s exterior is quite large and has a somewhat upscale look, but inside, the atmosphere is lively and welcoming. Wild mushroom hot pot is incredibly famous in Kunming, especially during the rainy season when people flock to the city in search of the freshest seasonal fungi. Once seated, you browse the menu to select your favorite mushrooms. There are so many varieties that you rarely see elsewhere, and most of the names were completely new to me. The restaurant features a refrigerated display case filled with rows of fresh wild mushrooms harvested that day. Just looking at them was exciting—it felt like being in a vibrant market. After you order, the staff begins adding the mushrooms to a large pot right at your table. Watching this process is part of the fun and really builds the anticipation. However, it’s important to note that wild mushrooms in Yunnan require thorough cooking. For safety reasons, the restaurant is very strict about not letting you eat until a specific amount of time has passed, using a timer to manage the cooking process precisely. As the pot simmers, a rich, earthy, and fragrant aroma unique to wild mushrooms fills the air. Over time, the umami flavors melt into the broth. Each variety of mushroom has its own distinct texture and flavor, making it a joy to compare them as you eat. Unlike meat-heavy hot pots, the main draw here is the ability to slowly savor the pure taste of the mushrooms themselves. The broth that remains at the end is truly exceptional. It’s a concentrated essence of all those wild mushrooms; one sip feels like you're tasting the literal bounty of Yunnan’s mountains. The flavor is incredibly delicate yet surprisingly deep, and I enjoyed every last drop. This is a local Yunnan delicacy that you simply have to try if you’re in Kunming. For a unique dining experience that’s hard to find elsewhere, I can’t recommend this place enough.

I visited Dongfeng Square during China’s Golden Week, and it was packed with people trying to take photos. Finding a clear view without someone’s head in the frame was a real challenge! The tall fountain towers glowed in changing colors, and the mist drifted right onto my face. That cool spray felt refreshing in the evening air. I came across BA BON.APPÉTIT during my visit to Kunming and stopped to explore its bakery counter. The warm wood interior and long, glowing display case gave the shop an elegant feel. There was plenty to catch my eye: breads, pastries and colorful cakes. On October 3, I spent time exploring Green Lake Park in Kunming. I enjoyed the changing scenery as I walked: colorful flower beds, leafy paths, traditional pavilions, and peaceful views across the lake. The garden details and striking floral displays made me stop often to take pictures. It was a lovely place to slow down and enjoy a green, scenic side of Kunming. I was enjoying a coffee on the Starbucks terrace when a colorful bakery on the ground floor caught my eye. This year I had a chance to solo travel to China for the third time (and third consecutive year!), after having seen the biggest and most popular cities during my previous trips, I chose to dedicate this one to nature, hiking and exploring a less known region (to Europeans at least, it's a famous and beloved destination for internal travel!)... ... and that's how I ended up spending the perfect two weeks in Yunnan!! Yunnan truly stole my heart, its beauty is never overrated and everyday surprised and amazed me, here is my itinerary! Days 1–2 (+ optional day 3 to explore the city more in depth, enjoy the flower market and amazing cafe culture): Kunming · Day 1: Arrive in Kunming. Explore Green Lake Park (Cuihu) and stroll around Guandu Old Town or Yuantong Temple. · Day 2: Take a day trip to the Stone Forest (Shilin) (UNESCO site) of dramatic limestone pillars, then board an afternoon/evening high-speed train to Dali (about 2 hours). Days 3–5 (or day 4-5 if you spent an extra day in Kunming, in this case I recommend to skip the itinerary written down for day 5, and follow days 3-4): Dali & Erhai Lake · Day 3: Explore Dali Ancient Town and visit the iconic Three Pagodas (Chongsheng Temple). · Day 4: Rent an e-bike or car to circle parts of Erhai Lake and stop by the traditional Bai minority agricultural town of Xizhou. · Day 5: Hike or take the cable car up Cangshan Mountain for panoramic views over the valley and Erhai Lake. Located in the Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan Province, Jianshui Old Town (建水古城) is a captivating destination. Compared to the massive tourist magnets of Lijiang and Dali, Jianshui is far less crowded, preserving an authentic atmosphere where traditional local life and rich history coexist beautifully. During my recent trip, I was deeply moved by the sights, the local vibe, and the incredible food. Here’s a closer look at what makes this place so special. 1. Historic Streets and the Grand "Chaoyang Tower" The symbol of Jianshui is undoubtedly the Chaoyang Tower, the massive gatehouse guarding the town’s east entrance. Built during the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty, it is said to be several decades older than Beijing’s Tiananmen. Its dignified presence is truly overwhelming. Inside the old town, cobblestone alleys stretch in every direction, lined with traditional wooden residences and historic shops. The greatest charm of this town is that it hasn't succumbed to over-commercialization; you can still feel the pulse of everyday life as locals shop, sip tea, and go about their day. 2. Architectural Marvels: The "Jianshui Confucius Temple" While the town is packed with historical buildings, the Jianshui Confucius Temple is an absolute must-visit. * Jianshui Confucius Temple This is one of the largest Confucius temples in China, rivaling even the one in Qufu. The vast grounds are home to beautiful ponds and lush gardens, with magnificent gates and halls standing in impressive order. The atmosphere is quiet and solemn, allowing you to fully appreciate the beauty of traditional Chinese architecture at your own pace. 3. A Tour of Ancient Wells and Daily Life Jianshui is also famously known as the "City of Wells." Ancient wells that are still in use today are scattered throughout the old town and its surroundings, with the circular "Dabanjing" (Grand Board Well) being the most famous. Even now, you can see locals gathering with large containers to collect the clear spring water. This very water is considered the secret ingredient that defines the flavor of Jianshui’s famous cuisine. 4. Must-Try Local Delicacies Jianshui is a true foodie destination, offering an incredibly high level of culinary satisfaction. · Jianshui Roasted Tofu The star of Jianshui cuisine. Bite-sized pieces of tofu made from the local spring water are slow-roasted over charcoal until the outside is crispy and the inside is hot and fluffy. Dipping them in a special sauce of chili and cilantro makes them impossible to stop eating. The local style of sitting around the fire while the shopkeeper counts the pieces you've eaten is also very charming. · Crossing-the-Bridge Rice Noodles and Steam Pot Chicken These are iconic Yunnan dishes, but the "Crossing-the-Bridge" rice noodles in Jianshui feature an exceptionally rich broth and silky homemade noodles. Another standout is "Steam Pot Chicken," a dish where the chicken's flavor is concentrated using only steam without adding any water. Its deep, nourishing flavor is the perfect cure for travel fatigue. 5. Summary and Travel Tips Jianshui Old Town was the most memorable part of my Yunnan journey, offering a perfect blend of historic architecture, peaceful local life, and affordable, delicious food. Since it’s easily accessible from Kunming by train, I highly recommend adding it to your Yunnan itinerary. It’s the perfect place to wander slowly, eat well, and feel the breath of history.

I was supposed to travel across Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam, but once I’ve came to Sapa, I’ve couldn’t resist to cross the border to discover that country. Heading to Kunming in the next days, any recommendations?

While walking through Green Lake Park, I came across Bamboo Forest Island, a small green corner tucked away in the northeast part of the park. Tall bamboo grows close together, creating a peaceful little path that feels different from the open lakeside walk. I liked discovering the details here: a small pavilion among the bamboo, colorful flowers, and sculptures set into the greenery. A sign explains that the island was rebuilt as a bamboo garden in 2011 and displays more than 20 kinds of bamboo. It was a lovely place to slow down, look around, and enjoy a quieter side of Kunming. Getting to the zoo is most convenient by taxi, and I booked a basic entrance ticket in advance on Trip.com. On the spot, I decided to skip the shuttle bus and walk the entire route—an ideal choice if you are in good physical shape and arrive early. Exotic Animals and the African Savanna Right at the entrance begins the territory of red pandas and monkeys. You can hand-feed the pandas, which immediately sets the mood. Further along a comfortable path, the route leads to the African zone. For an additional fee, you can feed giraffes here, and the zebras and rhinos are literally just a couple of meters away. Secluded Trails and Petting Zones The transition to the next locations takes a few kilometers. Since almost all visitors use the shuttle buses, walking here is very atmospheric and quiet. After passing a beautiful forest area with birds, you reach a fork. I recommend not going down to the animal farm right away due to the steep elevation change, but rather heading straight to the hoofed animals. There, deer, llamas, and sheep roam without enclosures—you can sit on the grass with them and take great photos. Predators, Pandas, and the Finale About a kilometer further are the panda enclosures, and right next to them is a massive lion and tiger village. On the way back, after passing the pandas and hoofed animals, head down to the exit right through the eco-farm. Capybaras and raccoons live there, and you can pet them too. In total, the walk came out to about 15,000–20,000 steps—a great activity and maximum immersion in nature. #travel #kunming

I was surprised to find a small cultural display there. The miniature landscapes made with stones and plants immediately caught my eye. They reminded me of tiny mountain gardens. I also enjoyed the traditional Chinese ink paintings and calligraphy displayed inside. It was a peaceful little stop and a lovely discovery during my walk around Green Lake. As an autumn lover, I always seek chance to travel during the season. But autumn for most places were in late Sept (Inner Mongolia or Dongbei) or late Oct-early Nov (almost everywhere else), and I happened to was occupied during both periods of time.
