While staying at Plockton and the Royal Scotsman visited Kyle of Lochalsh, the kind owners of Off the Rails arranged a tour for my son. Alex, the Train Manager, greeted us warmly, and everyone we encountered was delightful, giving my son special attention. They even provided a wheelchair for him to navigate the narrower spaces and explore all the carriages. For those who savour a long walk with views across the estuary and a trek through forest and higher moor land I recommend two circular walks either side of the bridge. They can be done separately as short walks if pushed for time or if you are up for a more energetic walk the Plock and Kyleakin Loop can be completed in about 3 hours. Stout walking shoes or hiking boots recommended as the terrain particularly near the beach or in coastal areas can be uneven underfoot. Walking poles will aid your balance on paths with steep ascents and descents. The Plock is a small stretch of coastal area with lots of paths to explore. It's a haven for wildlife. This is the place to look for Otters. Take a stroll through the wild flower meadows or explore hidden rocky coves. The beaches are quite wild and require good footing. The Plock is a great place to explore. It is owned by the Kyle and Lochalsh Community Trust who have developed access for the benefit of locals and visitors alike. Terrain Straightforward walking; the short loop near the start is an all-abilities path; parts of the other paths are less formal and can be boggy in places.

Escaping the scorching heat and concrete jungle of Ankara right after graduation for the Scottish Highlands was exactly what I needed. Since I'm a huge fan of nature and hiking, I tailored my entire itinerary around it. I trekked quite a lot over the four days; my feet were definitely aching, but it was totally worth it. On the first day, after touching down in Edinburgh, I spent some time exploring the city. The next day, we headed out to Loch Lomond and the Glencoe Valley. Glencoe is an incredibly vast and serene valley, and I hiked the trails around the Three Sisters peaks. The weather was a bit gloomy with a light drizzle, but it was absolutely perfect for a hike. From there, we made our way to the foothills of Ben Nevis, which happens to be the highest peak in the UK. Since I'm used to mountain trekking, the climbing route didn't exhaust me at all, and the views were simply stunning. The following day, we visited the world-famous Loch Ness. The loch is massive, but honestly, it was way too crowded with tourists. Everyone seems to flock there because of the monster legend, which felt a bit overhyped to me. Later that same day, we crossed over to the Isle of Skye and I hiked around the Old Man of Storr and the nearby waterfalls. The natural landscape here is hands down much better; the rocky trails are practically made for hiking. Of course, the weather up there can turn nasty in the blink of an eye, so packing a lightweight raincoat is a lifesaver. On our final day, we explored Stirling Castle and the town of St Andrews. Historical castles aren't exactly my vibe—I'm more of a lush greenery and mountains kind of person—but the view from the castle was actually pretty decent. I took a breezy walk along the beach at St Andrews; the sea was really choppy and freezing. Just a few quick tips if you're planning to go: I brought a three-prong UK travel adapter, which came in super handy. As for the food, they serve their famous fish and chips drenched in vinegar. It tasted a little weird to me, but you can scarf it down when you're starving. Even though I visited in August, it was still pretty chilly. The windbreaker and light jackets I packed were absolute lifesavers. That pretty much wraps up the trip, and now I'm back in Ankara.

A bridge now connects the Isle of Skye to the mainland. The Kyleakin Loop provides an excellent introduction to the Isle of Skye and the surrounding area. Starting at the Backpackers hostel you can follow the path alongside the estuary keeping the bridge in view. Once you reach the roundabout at the top turn left and the path makes its ascent through woodland. It's a pleasant circular walk, moderately challenging with views of the Skye Bridge, the village of Kyleakin and the Cullin mountains . You can also see the Torridon Mountains in the distance. The walk is 3 km in distance and takes about an hour to complete. The trail can be rugged in places so stout walking shoes and or hiking boots are advisable. This walk is seen as an excellent introduction for first time visitors to the Isle of Skye.

On arrival at the Kyle of Lochalsh I took a bus to the Isle of Skye. It's a couple of miles to the youth hostel aka Skye Backpackers. This hostel offers value for money accommodation to the independent traveller. I wasn't there long enough to explore the island in its entirety but this trip served as a good introduction to Skye and its outstanding natural beauty and breath taking scenery. There's a short easy walk from the hostel to the village of Kyleakin with an optional visit to Casteal Maol. Hiking boots and or stout walking shoes recommended Check tide times; a visit may not be possible at high tide.
