2026 Kyoto Autumn Foliage Guide: 8 Must-Visit Spots for Late November to December
If you're arriving in Kyoto in late November, there are still plenty of autumn foliage options! From the forest canopies of Tadasu-no-Mori and a scenic stroll through Kyoto Gyoen to the evening gardens at Toji and Kodai-ji, these 8 spots are perfect for the second half of your Kyoto foliage tour.
Important Note: "December foliage" mainly refers to early December. While some city spots can last until mid-month, you won't find peak colors across the entire mountain for the whole of December. The peak periods mentioned below are based on historical data for planning; check real-time conditions closer to your departure. Night opening dates also don't guarantee peak colors.
1️⃣ 🌳 Shimogamo Shrine & Tadasu-no-Mori | A Search for Late Autumn Colors
Walk through the woods along the approach, where the mix of red, yellow, and green canopies offers more depth than a simple sea of red. Look for the Momiji-bashi Bridge on the east side of Kawai Shrine to capture the stream, fallen leaves, and forest light.
🍁 Peak Period: Late November to early December. JR Central also notes Tadasu-no-Mori may last until mid-December; decide based on the week’s leaf report.
🚆 Access: A 10-minute walk north from Keihan Demachiyanagi Station.
🕐 Tadasu-no-Mori is free to stroll; Shrine gates open 06:30–17:00.
💴 Forest stroll is free; other special viewings require a fee.
📌 Best visited during the day, paired with lunch in the Shimogamo area. Do not step into plantings or block the path to photograph fallen leaves.
2️⃣ 🍂 Kyoto Gyoen | Free Red and Gold Autumn Vistas
Wide gravel paths, maples, and ginkgo trees create an open autumn landscape, ideal for those who prefer a relaxed pace. Since different species change colors at different times, you can wander around to find vibrant corners.
🍁 Peak Period: Late November to mid-December.
🚆 Access: A 5-minute walk from Marutamachi Station (Ainomachi-guchi exit) or Imadegawa Station (Inui-gomon exit).
🕐 The public areas of the National Garden are open anytime.
💴 Free; specific facilities within the garden may have separate opening times and fees.
📌 Kyoto Gyoen is a public park; separate arrangements are needed for visiting the Kyoto Imperial Palace. A daytime stroll is recommended to clearly see the tree colors and terrain.
3️⃣ 🌉 Kitano Tenmangu & Odoi Maple Garden | Vermilion Bridges and Riverside Maples
Admire the maples along the Kamiya River and capture the iconic Uguisu-bashi (Bush Warbler Bridge). The undulating path allows for views both looking down from above and looking up at the canopy from the stream.

6️⃣ 🍁 Kennin-ji | Autumn Garden Views Through Traditional Frames
Even near Gion, you can enjoy a peaceful temple visit. The maples of Chouon-tei (The Garden of the Sound of the Tide), moss, and wooden corridors blend beautifully, perfect for using door and window frames to add depth to your photos.

7️⃣ 🌙 Toji | The Five-Story Pagoda and Pond-side Illuminations
Use the Five-Story Pagoda as a backdrop while exploring the reflections of maples and the tower in Hyotan Pond. This is a great evening stop near Kyoto Station. Beyond the maples, the atmosphere of the Kondo and Kodo halls is also worth experiencing.
🍁 Peak Period: Late November to early December.

8️⃣ 🦆 Kanjuji | Late Autumn Gardens by Himuro Pond

📸 Foliage Viewing Tips
Fallen leaves can look more vibrant after rain, but stone steps and wooden floors become slippery. Strong winds or heavy rain can strip the trees quickly. Prioritize trains and subways; allow extra time for bus traffic. Do not move fallen leaves, break branches, or cross fences for photos.
