#autumnbeauty I spent a lovely weekend in Vieux-Lille this autumn, and it was like stepping back in time 🍂. The cobblestone streets, old Flemish buildings, and charming cafés make this historic part of Lille feel so special. The whole area is perfect for wandering around, especially with the autumn leaves adding a warm glow to the city. Best of all, just walking around is free, and there’s so much to discover at every turn! This route is perfect for a leisurely stroll. It's 4 km long and takes 45 mins to walk normally, but we took our time and spent the whole day—the kids had fun, and the adults felt relaxed. The total distance is about 3.8 km, and a normal walk takes about 45 mins. If you want to take photos and browse shops along the way, setting aside half a day is more comfortable. 🗺️ Route: Paris Opera House → Place Vendôme → Champs-Élysées → Arc de Triomphe → Eiffel Tower Stop 1 📍 Paris Opera House Address: Pl. de l'Opéra, 75009 Paris Open 10:00 AM–6:00 PM. At the Paris Opera House, first admire the magnificent exterior of the Palais Garnier, then head inside to see the Baroque-style decor and the famous marble grand staircase. There are exhibitions of various costumes inside. Galeries Lafayette is right behind it; if you want to shop, you can stop by on your way. Stop 2 📍 Place Vendôme It's about a 10-min walk from the Opera House. Place Vendôme (optional detour): Walking from the Opera House toward Place de la Concorde, you will pass by Place Vendôme. I am planning a Senior Inter-Rail Trip for my next big adventure and there are some marvellous museums and Gothic Cathedrals to visit around Lille, my first stop over for a few days. I plan to buy a culture pass so I can use public transport and free entry into the museums and Gothic Cathedrals, following in the footsteps of Matisse, Monet and the impressionists. Yes, I can absolutely combine Arras, Douai and Lens into one incredible, action-packed regional day trip. Because all three cities sit along interconnected lines of the regional network I can ride from one to the next in a perfect loop. By scheduling my transfers smoothly, I will comfortably hit my major targets: the underground war tunnels in Arras the world-class art museum in Lens and the historic belfry in Douai. To get the most out of my day trip from Lille I have a highly optimised, stress-free route map for my day trip. 🚆08:30 – 09:05 Train from Lille Flandres to Arras. Take a direct morning train (approx. 35 mins). 🏛️09:15 – 12:00 Explore Arras. Head straight to the Carrière Wellington (Wellington Quarry) to use my City Pass for free admission. Afterward, I take a brisk stroll through the stunning baroque Grand Place and grab a coffee and make a few sketches at the Gothic Cathedrals. 🚆12:15 – 12:30 | Train from Arras to Lens. Hop on an hourly direct train—it takes just 11 to 15 minutes to jump between these two cities. 🏛️12:30 – 15:30 | Explore Lens. Grab a quick lunch near the station, then I take the dedicated, free pedestrian path straight to the spectacular Louvre-Lens museum park. Flash my City Pass at the ticket counter to receive my reduced admission rate for the temporary exhibitions (the breathtaking main Gallery of Time is always free!). I can take a chill time with a drink and some quick sketching before heading to the station. 🚆15:45 – 16:15 Train from Lens to Douai Board the direct afternoon train connecting the two towns (approx. 30 mins). On the train I can check out my sketching and look through my postcards. 🏛️16:15 – 18:30 Explore Douai and Walk into the town center to admire the dramatic architecture. Spend your time marvelling at the towering UNESCO-listed Belfry of Douai or relaxing along the scenic scarpe canals. Time for some quick sketching and a bite to eat. 🚆18:45 – 19:15 | Train from Douai to Lille Flandres, Wrapping up my loop with a direct evening train. If you like hunting through car boot sales/ thrift stores/ charity shops / flea markets for that perfect quirky find, then put the annual Braderie de Lille at the top of your "to do" list! The entire city turns into a street market, with people selling the stuff that's cluttering up their house (some skis ... and a shovel...), their old children's toys to professional stall holders selling every kind of clock you can imagine; motoring bric-a-brac; old furniture ... the high street shops join in: French department store Printemps has a Braderie sale. And it's also a huge street party: everyone eats huge amounts of moules-frites (mussels with chips) ... there's brass bands playing. Nightlife in Lille is already a very lively (100,000 students in Lille see to that!) but it gets even more fun during the Braderie! Put a note in your diary for the first weekend in September, and bring an extra empty suitcase!
