🌍 After visiting many European cities, it starts to feel less fresh, but this city still has its unique features🈶 · Basic Overview: Linz is the capital of Upper Austria in northern Austria, located at the confluence of the Danube River and its tributary, the Traun River. It covers an area of 96 square kilometers and has a population of about 220,000, making it the third-largest city in Austria. Originally a Roman fortress, it became an important trade center in the Middle Ages, famous for its markets in the 15th century. After 1938, it developed into a heavy and chemical industrial center, is the headquarters of voestalpine, and serves as a railway, highway hub, and an important Danube river port. · Culture and Education: In 2009, Linz was named the "European Capital of Culture." The city is home to several universities and scientific research institutions, including Johannes Kepler University and Anton Bruckner Private University for Music, Drama, and Dance, as well as art schools and other educational institutions. · Tourist Attractions: Linz’s old town features many historic buildings, such as the Linz Cathedral built in the 14th century, one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in Europe, standing 107 meters tall; the central square has the Holy Trinity Marble Column. Additionally, there are many museums including the Linz Museum and Linz Art Museum. We also visited a church⛪, where attending a Mass was a very special experience. · Definition and Origin: Mass is a Catholic religious ceremony, also known as the Eucharist, with its name derived from the Latin word "Missa." It originates from the Last Supper in the New Testament of the Bible, where Jesus, on the eve of his passion, transformed bread and wine into his body and blood, gave them to his disciples to eat and drink, and commanded them to do this in remembrance of him. The Church holds Mass to reenact Jesus’ sacrifice. · Significance of the Ceremony: Mass is a Catholic ritual commemorating Jesus’ sacrifice and is the Church’s great offering to God. Its purpose is to consecrate the body and blood of Christ, offer them to God, and express reverence, gratitude, prayer, and atonement. It is the core and center of Catholic liturgical life. · Ceremony Process: It usually includes the entrance rite, where the congregation enters, sprinkles holy water, makes the sign of the cross, and bows, followed by the entrance of the presiding priest; then the Liturgy of the Word, including scripture readings and the homily; next the Liturgy of the Eucharist, where the priest blesses the bread and wine, transforming them into the body and blood of Jesus; finally, the concluding rite, where the priest sends the congregation forth to bear witness to Christ, marking the end of the Mass.

Linz is Austria’s surprising Danube city, where Baroque squares meet cutting-edge technology. Baroque buildings surround the enormous Hauptplatz, while the futuristic Ars Electronica Center and glass-fronted Lentos Art Museum face one another across the Danube. Linz is part of UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network. Hauptplatz is Austria’s largest Baroque square, and the old town around it is free to explore. Vienna and Salzburg are both within straightforward reach. The riverside is the cultural heart. The Ars Electronica Center, often called the Museum of the Future, explores artificial intelligence, robotics, biotechnology, and digital art. It features a glowing LED glass facade. It sits directly on the Danube, a few minutes’ walk over the bridge from the Old Town. Lentos Art Museum is a 130-metre-long building, architecturally impressive even from outside. Its riverside café and nearby promenade make it a pleasant stop even for visitors who skip the galleries. For views, the easiest way up to Pöstlingberg is the tram from Hauptplatz. The Pöstlingbergbahn is one of the steepest railways in the world. Linz Castle also has a Danube panorama, and the Mariendom is Austria’s largest church. And of course, the cake. The Linzer Torte is a traditional Austrian pastry, called the oldest cake in the world, and its birthplace was right here in Linz. You can even enjoy it with a view. Pro tips: The Ars Electronica Festival takes place every September, and in December the Christmas markets transform the city centre. A Linz Card can give free entry to the Ars Electronica Center. A Danube cruise and a walk along the river are other relaxed options, and May to September is best for the Danube promenade, outdoor cafés, and Pöstlingberg. Wear comfortable shoes and check opening times, as museums often close on Mondays. #Linz #Austria #ArsElectronica #LentosMuseum #Pöstlingberg #LinzerTorte #Danube #Hauptplatz #UpperAustria #CityBreak #TripcomTravel #TravelAustria

We’ve just returned from an incredible seven-day TUI Magical Danube cruise. Knowing beforehand about the low water levels of the Danube possibly disrupting plans, we still felt fortunate to experience this type of holiday. It was our first time on a river cruise and visiting these destinations, so we decided to embrace every moment. With the itinerary evolving as we progressed, the trip turned into a charming mystery adventure—you never knew exactly what the next day would bring! We were fortunate to visit Bratislava, Vienna, and Budapest, though it was by coach, and made stops at Tulln, Krems, Linz, and Melk along the river. The unique cultures, stunning architecture, and insightful information shared by the guides created memories we’ll forever cherish. At the start, we were docked alongside other TUI ships, which meant that occasionally another ship obstructed our view from the French windows, forcing us to keep them closed to avoid looking straight into a neighboring cabin—a common scenario on river cruises, we discovered. Later, we were moved to a more solitary dock, which was a great improvement for us, though it was evident that arrangements were less satisfactory for some other guests. The crew displayed remarkable efforts throughout all the changes caused by the difficult river conditions, shifting plans from head office, as well as the varying expectations and needs of the guests. A heartfelt thanks to our Cruise Director, Peer, who was omnipresent, addressing concerns, managing arrangements, and supporting passengers with admirable care, patience, and understanding. He seemed to operate tirelessly, available around the clock—a true gem! A big thank you goes to Maria, Anna, and Alex from the entertainment team. Their evening shows, singing, and choreography were exceptional, and they also contributed to morning excursions with boundless energy and warmth. Their added activities, such as jewelry-making and the silent disco, enriched the experience further. The TUI Skyla is a fantastic five-star ship. We loved the spaciousness of our room, perfectly maintained by Dona, who ensured it was always clean and inviting. The food was nothing short of excellent—plentiful, artistically presented, and offering diverse options in both restaurants. Hats off to the chefs and the superb waiting staff, particularly Zaw, who took great care of us throughout the week. Phyo and Michael from the bar team truly stood out, serving amazing cocktails and keeping things lively. A special acknowledgment to Yar Zar, whose ever-present smile and spot-on drink recommendations made our evenings even more delightful. We acknowledge that the experience was not ideal for all guests. Last-minute itinerary changes led to instances where some guests missed the ship’s departure and were transported by coach to the next stop. The longer coach journeys required to meet itinerary changes proved taxing for some and dampened their enjoyment of the cruise. Nevertheless, for us, the combination of an excellent team, beautiful ship, fantastic food, entertaining activities, and the opportunity to explore incredible places made this a particularly unforgettable week. We return home with treasured memories and would recommend this cruise to anyone who is flexible and open to adapting to changes brought about by varying river conditions, including some coach travel. Heartfelt thanks to everyone aboard for making our time so special. Great job, team! xx

We took a cruise on Lake Zurich to the Lindt chocolate factory. Upon entering, we were greeted by a giant chocolate fountain! We also enjoyed exhibits on cocoa trees and displays showing the differences between milk and dark chocolate blends. The shop was filled with Lindor chocolates. Time flew by while choosing souvenirs! 🍫 📍Lindt Home of Chocolate (Kirchberg) 🚃Approximately 1 hour by sightseeing boat from Burgkliplatz 💡The factory gets crowded, so allow plenty of time for the shop. #SwitzerlandTrip #Switzerland #Lindt #Chocolate

Lindenhof Hill and the Lindt Home of Chocolate were both absolutely amazing! 😆 Lindenhof is refreshing and lovely during the day, but the real winner for me was the evening view (just look at the third photo 🥺). It’s enchantingly beautiful and a total must-see. It was actually really fun to visit both during the day and at night to compare the two! The Lindt factory is super popular, so reservations are a must! There’s a massive chocolate sculpture inside that gets everyone excited 🙌 Plus, you get so many free samples that you'll leave happy and full (lol). If you're planning to go, don't forget to book in advance! 📝

It's third-largest city and the capital of Upper Austria, straddles the historic Danube River. While traditionally known as an industrial hub, Linz has transformed into a vibrant center for contemporary art, cutting-edge technology, and classic baroque architecture. Hauptplatz (Main Square): Framed by striking pastel-colored baroque and Renaissance buildings, the Hauptplatz is one of the largest enclosed public squares in Europe. At its center stands the massive, 20-meter-tall Trinity Column (Pestsäule), carved from white marble in 1723 to celebrate the city surviving plagues, fires, and Turkish invasions. Mariendom (New Cathedral): This breathtaking neo-Gothic masterpiece is the largest church in Austria by capacity, built to hold up to 20,000 worshippers. While its spire was intentionally kept two meters shorter than Vienna's St. Stephen's Cathedral out of historical deference, the church is a marvel of architecture, particularly famous for its spectacular stained-glass windows detailing local history. Linz Castle (Schloss Linz) and Schlossmuseum: Perched high on a hill overlooking the Danube, this historic castle blends a Renaissance fortress design with a striking modern wing. Inside, the Schlossmuseum hosts the largest museum of Upper Austrian cultural history, spanning everything from prehistoric weapons to 20th-century art. You cannot leave the city without trying a slice of Linzer Torte. Widely considered the oldest cake recipe in the world (dating back to 1653), this shortcake pastry features a rich, nutty dough spiced with cinnamon, filled with tart redcurrant jam, and topped with a distinctive lattice pattern. #travel #citycenter #cathedral #castle

My trip to Gmunden started with a simple plan to see Lake Traunsee and Mount Traunstein, but it turned into an absolutely magical day! Gmunden perfectly balances the refined elegance of a royal retreat with a laid-back atmosphere—minus the overwhelming crowds of Hallstatt. It is pure, unadulterated comfort. ☀️ Daytime Highlights: 1. Gmundner Keramik Workshop & Museum Gmunden is world-renowned for its handcrafted ceramics, most famous for the iconic green "flamed" swirl pattern. I highly recommend a visit to the workshop. Beyond watching master craftsmen demonstrate centuries-old techniques, you can try your hand at DIY ceramic painting and take home your own custom souvenir! 2. Schloss Ort (Castle Ort) This white-walled, red-roofed castle sitting right in the lake is the town's most iconic landmark. Walking across the 123-meter wooden bridge with the crystal-clear Traunsee below and the rugged Traunstein mountains in the distance is a photographer's dream. 3. Grünberg Cable Car & Treetop Walk You absolutely have to take the cable car up! The wooden observation tower at the summit offers a stunning 360-degree panorama of Gmunden, Schloss Ort, and the rolling Alps. The air is incredibly fresh, and there’s even a thrilling slide at the top. 4. Old Town & Lakeside Promenade Strolling along the Traunsee Promenade is pure bliss, with its charming wooden boathouses and bobbing sailboats. The Rathausplatz (City Hall Square) in the Old Town is equally delightful, featuring colorful buildings and a unique ceramic carillon that chimes beautiful melodies throughout the day. 5. Gmunden Parish Church (Pfarrkirche Gmunden) Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, this church is a centerpiece of local history. The interior is lavishly decorated, but the absolute highlight is the iconic Baroque "Altar of the Three Kings," which dates back to 1678. 🍺 Evening Surprise: Stumbling Upon the Annual Altstadtfest! I expected a quiet evening, but I happened to visit during the Altstadtfest (Old Town Festival) held on September 12! Starting from 5 PM, the entire old town—from Marktplatz and Rinnholzplatz to Kirchengasse—transformed into a vibrant stage for music and food: Live Music: Three different squares hosted various bands playing everything from classic jazz and traditional folk to modern pop. The vibe was electric! Local Delicacies & Beer: The streets were lined with food stalls. Grabbing a grilled bratwurst and a cold Austrian beer while swaying to the music with the locals was such a fun, authentic experience. Best of all? The event is free to enter! It’s incredibly welcoming for travelers. 💡 Practical Tips: Getting there: It’s super easy to reach by taking a train from Salzburg or Linz and then transferring to the Gmunden Tram.

#easytravelpost The Miesweg runs 3.5 km along the east shore of Traunsee (Gmunden–Traunstein car park to the tunnel, 150 m gain, 1 hr) — and the Steinbach waterfall lane is the 0.5 km cut-timber climb 200 m before the Miesweg junction where Sphagnum pads the limestone seep and Hypnum films the ash bark. I took ÖBB Linz→Gmunden (1 hr, €18, card), bus 503 to the Traunstein turning car park (15 min, €2.40), walked at 7:40 a.m. in May. The car park is €15/5-hr (cheapest tier, card machine) — I biked from Gmunden for free instead. The Steinbach fall is 12 m, water 6°C. The moss lives on the north wall of the lane where the fall spray hits the cut-log steps. Mistake: I walked at 1 p.m. in July — Traunstein blocks the west light, lane in shade but midges thick, moss grey-green, 25 min done. 7:30 a.m. Second mistake: I brought the dog — Miesweg sign: not suitable for dogs (ladders), turned back at the tunnel, 30 min loss. Third: I expected card at the Gmunden Seeschloss café — €5.50 Topfenstrudel, card fine, but the Traunstein hut honour box is cash-only. Buy in Gmunden: a €4.50 Bratwurstsemmerl at the Bahnhof kiosk, not the €17 lake terrace. Gear: 1.5 L water, €90 shoes (limestone slick), €25 shell. Local rule: free walk, €15 park if driving, ÖBB card, dog no on Miesweg, no drone near Traunstein (nature), stay on the lane, the limestone seep is not a shower. The moss on the ash root is the Traunsee spray's catch — step on cut timber. Opinion: Traunsee is the €15 parking lake that the Gmunden promenade crowd skips for the Miesweg, and the mossy Steinbach lane is the 5-min half with zero tunnel-crowd. Would you train 1 hr from Linz for a mossy limestone waterfall lane under a 1,691 m Traunstein?

The Experience Taking the train from Linz toward Hallstätter See offers an incredible journey, with window views that are absolutely mind-blowing and dreamlike long before you even step onto the platform. Upon getting off at the Hallstatt train station, most visitors immediately queue up for the passenger ferry to cross over to the main town. However, choosing to walk the opposite direction along the eastern shore reveals a blissfully calm, peaceful side of the lake. Along this waterside trail, you will encounter charming ancient wooden homes, grazing goats, and swans gliding gracefully along the shore, all set against a dramatic backdrop of towering Alpine peaks. Practical Logistics Take the ÖBB regional train from Linz Hauptbahnhof toward Hallstatt station (usually requiring a quick transfer at Attnang-Puchheim). Once you arrive at Hallstatt station, skip the ferry dock and follow the marked eastern lakeside walking and cycling path. The path is flat, well-maintained, and easy to navigate on foot. Costs & Tickets Walking the eastern lake trail is completely free to access. Along the path, look out for a charming self-service gemstone stall based on an honor system. You can pick up local mineral specimens and small fossils—like preserved ammonites—ranging from just €2 to around €10. Be sure to bring small cash denominations or coins to leave in the cash box. Insider Tips If you want to escape the heavy day-tripper crowds of main Hallstatt, this walk is the perfect alternative. Visit in the early morning or late afternoon when the lake water is calmest, reflecting the surrounding mountain peaks. Wear sturdy walking shoes or sneakers for a comfortable walk along the gravel path. Interior & Ambience Detail The ambient setting feels untouched and serene compared to the bustling tourist center across the water. The open-air trail winds between lush green mountain slopes, historic timber-clad Austrian homes, rustic wooden fences, and tranquil shorelines where swans gather near the water's edge.

#firsttimermistakes 📍 Place: Bregenz, Klagenfurt & Linz, Austria ✨ What it felt like: Each city had its own charm, from lakeside promenades and mountain views to historic streets and riverside walks. Learning the local habits made exploring feel much more relaxed and enjoyable. 👀 What stood out: Bregenz reminded me to check ferry destinations on Lake Constance, pack a rain jacket for fast-changing weather, and respect shared cycling paths. Klagenfurt highlighted the beauty of its lakeside setting while showing the importance of checking bus schedules, carrying some cash for smaller shops, and slowing down to enjoy local specialties. In Linz, I learned to watch for bike lanes along the Danube, check tram tickets carefully, and try regional dishes like Linzer Torte with an open mind. 💡 Exclusive tip: Download local transport apps before arriving, carry a lightweight waterproof jacket, and learn a few regional food names. These small preparations can help you avoid many common first-timer mistakes. ❤️ Personal feeling: The little local traditions are what made these Austrian cities memorable for me. Taking time to understand them turned simple sightseeing into a much richer travel experience. #FirstTimerMistakes #Austria #Bregenz #Klagenfurt #Linz #TravelTips #TripMoments #ExploreAustria #CityBreak #TravelSmart

Started the morning in Kutná Hora, an old silver mining town. Visited St. Barbara’s Church. From an engineering perspective, the structural design of the Gothic flying buttresses is highly impressive. The area was quiet, with very few tourists around. For a quick lunch, I found a small street-side tavern away from the main path. Had a plate of local pork stew and bread for about 240 CZK (around 4 OMR). Simple, heavy food. After lunch, we drove for exactly 4 hours to reach Linz, Austria's third-largest city. It’s a major industrial center—they supply parts for Mercedes-Benz here. It felt much more industrial than touristy. By 19:30, we walked into the New Cathedral. It is a massive structure, built to hold up to 20,000 people. There was a sermon and organ music playing. I didn’t understand the language, but the acoustic engineering of the high ceilings made the sound incredibly clear and calming. Walked back to the hotel around 21:00. The temperature dropped to 17°C, which is freezing for someone used to Muscat weather. Total steps logged today: 14,200.

Mount Pöstlingberg, located north of Linz, Austria, rises approximately 539 meters and is one of the city's most iconic tourist attractions. It boasts not only beautiful natural scenery but also panoramic views of Linz, the Danube River, and the distant Alps, making it a prime location for enjoying city vistas. In the early 18th century, with the construction of the Mount Pöstling Temple, a pilgrimage church, it gradually became a renowned religious site. The Mount Pöstling Railway, opened in 1898, is one of the world's most famous mountain railways, attracting numerous tourists with its steep gradients and stunning scenery. The Grottenbahn, built in 1906, adds a touch of fairytale charm to the mountaintop, allowing passengers to ride a dragon-shaped train through mysterious caves and witness scenes from classic fairytales like "Snow White" and "Little Red Riding Hood," making it a favorite among families. Combining natural beauty, historical culture, religious architecture, and a fairytale theme park, Mount Pöstlingberg is not only a symbol of Linz but also an excellent destination for experiencing Austrian culture and leisure tourism.

📍 Place: Linz, Austria. ✨ What it felt like: Walking along the Danube, I noticed how easygoing the city felt. The waterfront paths, open public spaces, and café terraces created a calm atmosphere, while modern buildings added a contemporary touch to the historic surroundings. 👀 What stood out: The riverfront was easily the highlight for me. Long walking paths and beautiful views made it enjoyable to explore without any fixed plan. I also liked the contrast between traditional church towers and the sleek modern architecture visible across the city. The city felt compact and easy to navigate, making it possible to enjoy museums, cafés, viewpoints, and local neighborhoods in a single day without rushing. 💡 Exclusive tip: Spend some time by the Danube around sunset. The river reflects the changing colors of the sky beautifully, and many of the best viewpoints are completely free. ❤️ Personal feeling: Linz felt like a place where I could slow down and enjoy the small moments. A morning pastry, an afternoon riverside walk, and an evening café stop were enough to make the day memorable.
