These are some cool and less crowded summer retreats perfect for families with kids in August.
Traveling with kids has two biggest fears: crowds and a lack of enjoyment. In the sweltering August heat, popular tourist spots are packed to the point of despair, and tickets are ridiculously expensive. These 8 places, carefully selected for you, are less crowded, cool, culturally rich, and, most importantly, affordable, perfect for a leisurely family trip.
01 Changde | Hunan
Peach Blossom Spring isn't just the one described by Tao Yuanming. Visiting the Peach Blossom Spring tourist area in Changde in August is a perfect way to avoid the crowds. Enjoy lush greenery, streams winding through the village, and let your children run around on the paddy fields – much better than being in an air-conditioned shopping mall.
📍 I recommend entering through the Qin Valley entrance and walking deeper into the stream. The shaded trees will make the temperature feel at least five or six degrees lower. Kids will be glued to the water, so remember to bring an extra change of clothes.
🍜 There are several farmhouse restaurants outside the scenic area. Braised pork with bamboo shoots and mugwort cakes are their specialties; you can eat your fill for around 40 yuan per person. Don't buy those "dried plums" at the scenic area entrance; they're just dyed grapes. Don't be fooled.
⚠️ The light is best after 3 PM, avoiding backlighting for photos and the midday sun. Book tickets one day in advance through the official WeChat account; buying on-site involves queuing.
02 Jinzhong | Shanxi
Jinzhong is a great place for children to learn about the "compound economy." Many people are torn between the Qiao Family Compound and the Wang Family Compound. My suggestion: if time is limited, go to the Qiao Family Compound; if you want a deeper understanding, go to the Wang Family Compound. The Qiao Family Compound is compact and can be explored in two hours; the Wang Family Compound is large and can take up most of the day.
🏠 The Qiao Family Compound is suitable for younger children; the courtyard is small, full of stories, and not tiring to walk around. The Wang Family Compound is divided into Gaojiaya and Hongmenbao, which will interest middle and high school students; the brick and wood carvings are full of intricacies of the imperial examinations and business.
🚄 Pingyao Ancient City is a half-hour drive from Qiao Family Compound. You can enter the city in the evening without buying a pass and wander around freely. Children run under the ancient city walls, and the aroma of vinegar wafts from the street vendors. Buy a bottle of aged vinegar to take home and use for cooking – it's more worthwhile than a souvenir.
⚠️ Mianshan Mountain is not recommended for children under ten. There are many steps, long queues for the cable car, and it's too tiring for adults to carry them. If you must go, take the flat path through Shuitaogou; don't force yourself to climb.
03 Sanming|Fujian
Sanming is a place I've been wanting to visit for a long time. The Danxia landform of Dajin Lake is best experienced by boat. Children don't have to walk; they can sit on the boat, enjoy the breeze, and see the red cliffs reflected in the green water – a very relaxing experience.
🛶 Take the "Water-based Skyline" route on Dajin Lake. The boat will enter a narrow canyon, and the children will scream with excitement. The whole trip takes about three hours. Remember to bring a light jacket for your child, as it can be windy on the lake.
🏯 Taining Ancient City is more beautiful at night than during the day. The Shangshu Mansion ancient building complex is especially photogenic when lit up. There's an intangible cultural heritage museum in the ancient city where you can experience making Lei Cha (擂茶, a type of tea), and the kids didn't want to leave.
🍜 I recommend the Youjiang Tofu (游浆豆腐) in the ancient city; it's so tender you can't even pick it up with chopsticks. Served with a side of chili sauce, it's a treat for both adults and children. It's cheap, only ten yuan a serving.
04 Taizhou|Zhejiang
Tiantai Mountain in Taizhou is truly cool in summer. Guoqing Temple doesn't charge an entrance fee. The Sui Dynasty Pagoda has stood there for a thousand years. The kids ran around the pagoda, while I sat on the stone steps in front of the hall, finding peace in the cicadas' chirping.
🌿 The Tiantai Mountain waterfall group is worth a visit. The path to Shiliang Waterfall is gentle; even a five-year-old can walk it on their own. The mist is incredibly refreshing, a hundred times more comfortable than an air-conditioned room.
🏰 Taizhou Ancient City Cultural Tourism Area is located in Linhai. The Great Wall of Jiangnan winds along the mountain ridge. Climbing in the evening avoids the sun, and you can enjoy a panoramic view of the ancient city from the Lansheng Gate. Children are particularly fascinated by the city gate arches and barbicans.
⛰️ Shenxianju is suitable for families with good stamina. For those with elderly people or children, it's recommended to take the cable car up the mountain and walk along the high-altitude walkway to see the sea of clouds; don't try to climb. The chances of seeing the sea of clouds are highest after a rain in August.
🍜 The egg white sheep's tail at the entrance of Taizhou Ancient City is sweet but not greasy, and children love it. There's also a long-established restaurant called Maixia on Ziyang Street, with fresh soup and smooth noodles; 20 yuan per person is enough to fill you up.
05 Qianxinan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture | Guizhou
Guizhou is a major province for escaping the summer heat, and Qianxinan is even cooler. The Malinghe Canyon, known as "Earth's most beautiful scar," features waterfalls cascading from both cliffs. Walking on the walkway through the crevice, the mist hits you in the face; a light jacket is just right.
🌧️ Maling River is best visited after rain, when the water volume is high and the waterfalls are impressive. The boardwalk is slippery, so bring non-slip shoes for children and avoid sandals.
🌾 Wanfenglin is best explored slowly by electric scooter. Buyi villages are scattered among rice paddies; in August, the rice is lush and green, swaying in the wind like waves. Renting a scooter costs 30 yuan per hour, and two hours is enough to explore.
🏠 For accommodation, I recommend staying in Nahui Village. The guesthouses are inexpensive, and you can see the peaks from your window. Have sour fish soup at the village entrance in the evening—it's sour, spicy, and appetizing; kids can easily eat two bowls of rice with it.
⚠️ The altitude here is 1200 meters, so the UV radiation is strong. Sunscreen and hats are essential. There's a large temperature difference between day and night, so bring a long-sleeved shirt for children.
06 Shiyan|Hubei
Wudang Mountain is much less crowded in August. Many people flock to the beach in the summer, but Wudang Mountain is surprisingly peaceful. Taking the cable car to the Golden Summit, the kids watched the sea of clouds roll by, feeling like they were on an airplane.
🌄 To watch the sunrise, you need to stay on the mountain. A standard room in the Golden Summit VIP building costs around 600 yuan; the conditions are basic, but the location is excellent. Getting up at 4:30 am, bundled up in a coat, to watch the sea of clouds lift up the sun will be a memorable experience for the kids.
🚶 If you're taking the kids hiking, choose the section from Taizipo to Xiaoyao Valley. It's gentle and not tiring, and you can even see monkeys.
⚠️ Don't feed the monkeys; they're very aggressive when it comes to food.
🏯 Zixiao Palace is worth visiting. It's the best-preserved ancient architectural complex in Wudang Mountain, allowing children to appreciate the wisdom of the ancients in building houses.
🍜 The Taoist vegetarian restaurants near Yuxu Palace at the foot of the mountain offer vegetarian chicken and duck that taste like meat, which the kids found fascinating. It costs around 30 yuan per person.
07 Xuancheng|Anhui
Xuancheng is a hidden treasure trove of Huizhou culture. The ancient village of Zhaoji is much quieter than Hongcun. In August, a stream meanders through Chaji Village, children hop across stone bridges, and elderly people relax under the eaves—a vivid picture of life in southern Anhui.
🏡 Chaji Ancient Village entrance fee is 70 yuan, free after 5:30 pm when the light is perfect for viewing the horse-head walls. Many students sketch in the village; children can squat nearby and watch—more interesting than an art museum.
🐉 The Hu Clan Ancestral Hall in Longchuan, Jixi, boasts exquisite wood carvings, suitable for elementary school students, providing a direct understanding of the "Three Carvings of Huizhou." The guide's explanations are lively, and children are engaged.
🍜 Longchuan Village's tarts, filled with preserved mustard greens and grilled over charcoal until crisp, cost 3 yuan each; children nibble on them as they walk.
⏰ Allocate half a day each to two attractions in Xuancheng: Chaji in the morning, Longchuan in the afternoon, and stay overnight in Jixi County. The hotel, priced at just over 100 yuan per night, is very clean.
08 Anshan | Liaoning
Finally, let me mention a place that's easily overlooked—Qianshan Mountain in Anshan. August in Northeast China is cool, and Qianshan Mountain has lush vegetation, making hiking in the mountains less sun-exposed. Children are full of energy; the section from Wuliang Temple to Longquan Temple is interesting with its stone steps and wildflowers along the way.
🌲 Qianshan Mountain is suitable for children from elementary school age and up; younger children won't be able to walk. Taking the electric cart up to the halfway point saves a lot of energy.
⏰ Entering the mountain at 7 am, the mist hadn't dissipated, making it feel like walking through a traditional Chinese ink painting. Descending before noon allowed us to avoid the tour groups.
🍜 After descending, we went to Anshan city to eat a bowl of Niuzhuang meat pie—thin crust, generous filling, and a bowl of mutton soup. It was a satisfying meal for about 20 yuan per person.
⚠️ The "guides" outside the Qianshan Mountain gate will try to take you on a "free route," ending up taking you to buy incense. Ignore them. Just buy tickets directly to enter the main scenic area.
Of these 8 places, Sanming and Changde are the most hassle-free, with flat roads throughout, making it easy to push a stroller. For older children, Qianxinan and Taizhou will offer a more enjoyable experience. Which one are you planning to visit first? Let's discuss in the comments, and I'll help you plan your itinerary.
