Longde travel guide and discussion

Family, I’m back in Guyuan! Last time I spent three days here and still felt like I hadn’t explored enough. This time, I took a deep dive and discovered that Guyuan really is full of hidden gems. Besides Liupan Mountain, the grottoes, terraced fields, and old alleys here are all incredibly charming. 🏛️ Xumishan Grottoes | The Buddhist Kingdom of the Silk Road is breathtaking One of China’s top ten grottoes! I was truly amazed. The largest Buddha statue is over 20 meters tall. Standing at its feet and looking up, it feels very imposing. The Buddha carvings are incredibly detailed, with lifelike folds in the robes and expressions. It’s hard to imagine how people over 1,000 years ago carved such exquisite statues into sheer cliffs. The entire grotto complex has over 100 caves, ranging from the Northern Wei to the Tang dynasty, each with a distinct style. My favorite is Cave 51, where the Buddha statues are the best preserved, and the backlit flying apsaras are especially beautiful. 💡 Tested Tips: · Tickets + shuttle bus cost 68 RMB; it’s cheaper to buy online in advance than on-site · The scenic area is large, so definitely take the shuttle bus; walking would be exhausting · The Danxia landform behind the Great Buddha is a perfect photo spot that 99% of visitors miss—make sure to go there · Hiring a guide makes it much more interesting; otherwise, it’s just a bunch of rocks. Listening to the stories reveals the deeper meaning 🌾 Jinji Ping Terraced Fields Park | The earth’s fingerprint is spectacular 28 square kilometers of dryland terraced fields, layered like the fingerprints of the earth. I visited in July when the crops were lush green, spreading layer by layer from the foot to the top of the mountain—truly magnificent. Standing on Viewing Platform No. 1 looking down, the curves of the terraces are especially graceful. The sunlight creates shifting shadows; I could have watched for half an hour and still not gotten enough. In spring, the hills are covered with peach and apricot blossoms; in autumn, the fields turn golden. I heard it’s even more beautiful then. Photography enthusiasts should definitely come. 💡 Tested Tips: · Free admission, open all day · Viewing Platform No. 1 is the highest with the best view · Early morning and late afternoon have the best light for photos · No dining options near the terraces, so bring water and snacks 🏘️ Longde Old Alley | An ancient village forgotten by time This place is truly full of character! A long old alley lined with old houses with yellow earth walls, red lanterns hanging on the doors, and old slogans on the walls. Walking through the alley feels like time slows down. There are many handicraft workshops in the alley—paper cutting, clay sculpture, vinegar brewing—all local intangible cultural heritage. I bought a small paper-cut bookmark for 10 RMB, cut on the spot by an auntie, very delicate. The old alley isn’t long; an hour’s stroll is enough, but I stayed for two hours chatting with local elderly folks and listening to their stories from the past—very interesting. 🏔️ Liupan Mountain Red Army Long March Scenic Area | Red education can be fun too I thought red-themed sites would be boring, but it turned out quite interesting. The scenic area is on the peak of Liupan Mountain, quite high altitude with strong winds, very cool in summer. There’s a memorial hall telling the story of the Red Army’s Long March, with many old artifacts that are quite moving. The most interesting part is the “Red Army Trail,” a 2.5 km mountain path with many sculptures recreating key events from the Long March. Walking it is like retracing the Long March route—very meaningful. 🚌 Transportation Guide · Plane: Guyuan Liupan Mountain Airport, with flights to Xi’an and Yinchuan · High-speed rail: Arrive at Guyuan Station, currently only trains to Yinchuan and Xi’an · Self-driving: Attractions are scattered, so driving is most convenient; roads are good · Car hire: About 300 RMB per day, driver also acts as guide, quite cost-effective ⚠️ Honest Talk Guyuan isn’t a trendy, check-in type tourist spot. It’s a place to walk slowly, look carefully, and savor the experience. It has grottoes over 1,000 years old, spectacular terraced fields, quaint old alleys, and summer temperatures around 18°C. Many people associate Ningxia with deserts, but Guyuan’s forests and mountains are the real hidden treasures. The people here are very simple and honest, prices are low, and you can have a great trip for about 1,000 RMB per person. If you’re like me and don’t like crowded popular spots, preferring places with history, culture, and natural scenery, Guyuan is definitely worth a visit. · -- Accommodation 🏨 Liupan Mountain · Yunqi Yeshe Starry Sky Camp Open the window to endless mountain ranges and a sea of clouds; at night, you can lie in bed and watch the Milky Way. They offer tea brewing by the fire—like the Northwest’s version of Anaya. 🏨 Guyuan Huaqi Earl Hotel A high-end city hotel benchmark, rooms are comfortable and stylish with floor heating, a hearty breakfast, and a prime location for easy travel. 🏨 Longde Hongya Old Alley Guesthouse A distinctive guesthouse hidden in the old alley, with yellow earth walls and an old courtyard, offering an authentic Northwest experience with full immersion. 🏨 Pengyang Jinji Ping Terraced Fields Guesthouse Right next to the terraced fields, with layered terrace views from the window. Watch the sunrise in the morning and the stars at night—top choice for photography lovers. · --

Many people come to Ningxia just for the vast desert sands of Shapotou, but overlook the frontier ancient cities hidden in this land🌾 The rammed-earth walls, old streets and alleys, and traces of time beneath Helan Mountain are desolate yet gentle—a romance unique to the Northwest. 🏜️ Zhenbeipu Western Film Studio (Yinchuan) The filming location for "A Chinese Odyssey," where the ancient rammed-earth castle stands in the wilderness. The Moon Gate and Sihai Inn, with the wind blowing across the rammed-earth walls—the light and shadow at sunset are breathtaking, instantly transporting you into the story of Zixia and Zhizunbao. 🌊 Shapotou (Zhongwei) Rolling deserts on one side, the winding Yellow River on the other. Ride a camel through the dunes, go sand-sliding, or take the desert cable car to experience the grandeur of "the lone smoke in the vast desert." The desert sunset is romantic to the extreme. 🪨 Helan Mountain Rock Art Imprints left on rocks by ancient ancestors. Stone carvings from tens of thousands of years ago tell ancient stories. The wilderness, mountain rocks, and ancient totems are full of mysterious atmosphere. 🏮 Longde Old Alley An ancient village beneath Liupan Mountain, where red lanterns line the stone paths. With earthen walls, old courtyards, and ancient stages, there are no crowded throngs. When the lights come on in the evening, it feels rustic, peaceful, and healing. 🏯 Yanzhou Ancient City (Yanchi) A well-preserved Ming Dynasty frontier city wall with majestic, upturned eaves. Standing on the wall and looking out, you can understand the years of border defense. The twilight light and shadow hitting the walls feel heavy and awe-inspiring. 💡 Travel tips · The temperature difference between day and night in Ningxia is large, so be sure to bring a jacket · The UV rays in the Northwest are strong; don't forget sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses · Ancient cities are best visited in the evening; sunset is the best time for photos · Self-driving is recommended for easier travel between different spots

⛰️ "The sky is high, the clouds are pale, watching the wild geese fly south." Liupan Mountain was the last high mountain crossed by the Red Army during the Long March. It combines a rich revolutionary heritage with stunning natural scenery and is a rare, cool summer retreat in Northwest China. With an average summer temperature of 18°C, lush forests, and tranquil valleys, it is perfect for short trips, light hiking, and revolutionary educational tours. This trip offers a chance to take in the magnificent scenery, revisit revolutionary history, and record a concise, practical travel experience. 1. Scenic exploration, immersed in cool breezes and greenery 1. Liupan Mountain National Forest Park Known as the "Little Jiuzhaigou of the Northwest," this forest park is a natural oxygen bar at the source of the Jing River. We recommend the classic loop route: enter via the water route and exit via the land route for a relaxing trip without backtracking. The core Xiaonanchuan Valley is tranquil, with babbling streams and lush trees; the boardwalk along the water offers scenery at every step and is cool and refreshing in summer. The Liangdian Gorge at the end is quiet and serene, with towering ancient trees and a gentle river valley. You can stroll, rest, and learn about the local ecology and landforms at the Ecological Museum. 2. Red Army Long March Tourist Area This is the revolutionary heart of Liupan Mountain. The 2.5 km Red Army Trail recreates classic scenes from the Long March, allowing for an immersive experience of the hardships endured during the march. After reaching the summit, the towering Long March Monument stands amidst the mountains. Leaning against the railing and looking out, you can see rolling mountains and vast seas of clouds, taking in the magnificent landscape described in poetry. The memorial hall at the summit has a rich collection that fully restores those turbulent years; reading through it allows you to deeply understand the profound revolutionary spirit. 2. Travel guide The forest park package ticket is 90 yuan (includes the mandatory shuttle bus, as the mountain roads are too long to walk). Opening hours are 8:00 AM–6:00 PM. The visit takes about 2–3 hours; we recommend entering in the morning to allow sufficient time for sightseeing. The weather in the Liupan Mountain area is changeable with large temperature differences between day and night. Even in midsummer, you should bring a light jacket and non-slip shoes. UV rays are strong in the forest and there are many insects, so be sure to take sun protection and insect repellent measures. Try to avoid traveling during afternoon showers, do not take unmarked mountain paths, and stay safe and worry-free. A trip to Liupan Mountain allows you to embrace the forest breeze and understand the revolutionary spirit. The tranquil landscape heals the body and mind, while the turbulent history is deeply moving. Combining scenery and heritage, it is a hidden gem in the Northwest worth visiting.

No one would disagree that Guyuan is the most low-key treasure of a city in the Northwest, right? Most people only know Yinchuan when visiting Ningxia, but they don't know how many hidden gems Guyuan has. Grottoes, Danxia landforms, forests, and canyons—the landscape here is unbelievably diverse. In this post, I'll break down the places in Guyuan worth a special trip. I've personally tested every single one of them; if you don't like them, you can come find me. Xumishan Grottoes: An underrated treasure trove of grotto art When it comes to grottoes, everyone's first thought is Dunhuang, Yungang, or Longmen, but the Xumishan Grottoes are truly severely underrated. Construction began in the Northern Wei Dynasty, over 1,500 years ago. While the scale doesn't compare to those famous major grottoes, its value lies in the fact that it's uncrowded, quiet, and allows for up-close viewing. My favorite is the Great Buddha in Cave 5. It's over 20 meters tall and carved into the mountain. Standing at the feet of the Buddha and looking up, the sense of awe is something photos just can't convey. Although the Buddha's face has weathered somewhat, the kindness in its eyes remains. For over 1,000 years, it has just quietly watched the world below. The scenic area is large, and there's some distance between the caves, so you'll need to hike. I recommend wearing comfortable shoes and taking your time to walk and explore. The steps at the Yuanguang Temple section are quite steep, so seniors and children should be careful. It takes about 2 to 3 hours to see everything. Don't rush; this is a place that requires you to calm your mind and soak it all in. By the way, the Danxia landforms at Xumishan are also beautiful. The red mountains paired with green trees create a striking color contrast. As you walk between the grottoes, any photo you snap will look like a masterpiece. Huoshizhai: Who knew Northwest Danxia could be so delicate? Huoshizhai was the biggest surprise of my trip to Guyuan. I had visited the Danxia in Zhangye before and thought all Danxia in the Northwest was grand and imposing, but upon arriving at Huoshizhai, I discovered that Danxia can also be delicate. The Danxia mountains at Huoshizhai aren't large blocks of color; instead, they are individual red peaks of various shapes—some look like castles, some like pillars, and others like mushrooms. Trees grow on the mountains, creating a beautiful mix of red and green. There are wooden boardwalks in the scenic area; walking along them, you'll find a new view with every step, and every turn reveals a new scene. I highly recommend the Yuntai Mountain section. The boardwalk is built along the edge of a cliff; looking down, you see deep valleys, and looking up, you see red rock walls. Walking on it is a bit thrilling, but the view is absolutely incredible. There's also a glass suspension bridge; if you're brave enough, give it a try. The angle of the scenery from the bridge is completely different from the ground. Another feature of Huoshizhai is that it has both Danxia landforms and primeval forests. These two landscapes are intertwined, which is hard to find elsewhere. If you come in autumn, the leaves turn yellow and red, matching the red mountains—the colors are so rich it's like an overturned palette. Laolongtan: A cool, secret getaway at the source of the Jing River Who would have thought that such a lush, watery place could be hidden on the arid Loess Plateau? Laolongtan is the source of the Jing River, featuring 4 connected pools with crystal-clear water. Surrounded by dense forests, it's several degrees cooler here than in the city during summer—so refreshing you won't want to leave. The scenic area's trails are built along the stream, so you can listen to the sound of water as you walk—it's incredibly healing. The color of the pools changes with the light; sometimes they are emerald green, other times deep blue. Sunlight filters through the leaves onto the water, creating dancing light spots that look truly dreamy. The innermost pool is the deepest and has the most beautiful color—a pure blue-green, like a gemstone embedded in the valley. There's an observation deck nearby where you can sit, zone out, listen to the water, and feel the breeze. It's such a stress-reliever. A quick reminder: some parts of the Laolongtan trails can be slippery, so watch your step. Also, the weather in the mountains changes in an instant. Bringing a raincoat is more practical than an umbrella because sometimes the wind is too strong for an umbrella to hold up. Liupanshan: A green treasure trove within red memories "The high peaks of Liupanshan, red flags fluttering in the west wind." The lines from the textbook have finally become the scenery before my eyes. Liupanshan was the last major mountain crossed by the Red Army during the Long March. There is now a Long March Memorial Hall on the mountain that you can visit while you're there. But setting aside its historical significance, the natural landscape of Liupanshan itself is worth the trip. The mountain has extremely high vegetation coverage and is a natural oxygen bar. Walking on the forest trails, the air is so fresh you'll want to take deep breaths. In summer, the mountain is covered in colorful wildflowers, which are stunning. I recommend the Xiaonanchuan route, which is a canyon and stream trail. You walk along the stream the entire way, and the dense tree shade means you won't get sunburned—it's perfect for summer. You can step directly into the stream; it's cool and refreshing. If you get tired, sit by the water for a while, and the summer heat will vanish. The whole route takes about 2 hours; it's not too strenuous and is suitable for all ages. If you have enough time, you can stay overnight on the mountain and watch the sunrise the next morning. The sunrise at Liupanshan is famous. With the sea of clouds surging, the moment the sun jumps out from the clouds, it really makes you feel that all the early rising was worth it. About accommodation Staying in a cave dwelling homestay in Guyuan was the night I looked forward to most on the whole trip. The cave dwelling is dug into the loess slope; it looks simple on the outside, but the inside is a hidden gem. The arched ceiling, earthy yellow walls, paired with wooden furniture and Northwest-style decorations, have a special charm. The benefit of a cave dwelling is that it's warm in winter and cool in summer. Staying there in summer, it's nice and cool, and you don't even need air conditioning. There's a large terrace in the courtyard with tables and chairs. At night, it's so quiet you can only hear the wind—a kind of tranquility you can never find in the city. The owner is very enthusiastic and will recommend niche attractions nearby and the best times to visit. Although it's not a luxury setup, it has that feeling of being at home, and it's incredibly comfortable to stay in. Itinerary suggestions If you only have 2 days, I recommend Xumishan Grottoes + Huoshizhai for Day 1, and Laolongtan + Liupanshan for Day 2. They are in 2 different directions—1 day in the west, 1 day in the south—so you won't be backtracking. If you have 3 days, you can spend an extra day at Liupanshan to explore slowly; it's worth the time.

Calling everyone planning a trip to Guyuan! This super practical 2-day itinerary has everything planned out for you. When traveling to Ningxia, most people head for the deserts, lakes, and mountains, but few know that a deeply soothing, thousand-year-old alley is hidden beneath the Liupan Mountains: Longde Old Alley. There are no overwhelming crowds or noisy, over-commercialized streets here. Instead, you will find authentic Northwest village scenery, weathered century-old houses, and quiet, winding stone paths. It is a hidden gem in Guyuan that is perfect for a leisurely stroll, relaxing, and taking photos. Longde Old Alley is located in the heart of the Liupan Mountains. It was renovated from a local century-old village and fully preserves the traditional residential style of the Northwest Loess Plateau. The entire alley is built along the mountain in a well-arranged layout, with layers of loess walls, rustic brick-and-wood houses, and winding stone paths, all accented by red lanterns and old trees and greenery, creating a gentle and soothing atmosphere. Unlike the grand and magnificent popular attractions in Ningxia, this place carries a quiet, rustic sense of nostalgia, where every step reveals the essence of time. Walking into the old alley, you instantly leave behind the restlessness and noise of the city. Beneath your feet are bluestone paths polished smooth by time, with uneven textures that hold the traces of generations of life. The old houses on both sides retain the most primitive Northwest residential style, with rammed-earth courtyard walls, wooden lattice windows, vintage courtyard gates, old stone mills, and stone steps—every detail is full of the essence of everyday life. The alley is lush with greenery and shaded by trees, with moss decorating the corners and old trees blocking the sun. As a breeze passes through the alley, it feels quiet and comfortable. Every photo you take here is a stunning, atmospheric shot with a classic vibe. The street is not long, but it is full of surprises. The alley preserves traditional wineries, ancient courtyards, folk-custom courtyards, and exhibition areas for old farming tools, with each courtyard having its own unique story. Yinuo Winery continues the traditional Longde brewing craft, and its rustic storefront blends perfectly with the old alley, full of ancient charm. The old-fashioned farm courtyards preserve the living scenes of Northwest people from the past, with stone troughs, stone rollers, and old farming tools quietly displayed, allowing you to immerse yourself in the daily life of the older generation of Liupan Mountain people. The level of commercialization here is extremely low. There are no clusters of trendy shops or noisy hawking, preserving the purest tranquility of an ancient village. Strolling through the alley, listening to the wind, looking at the old houses, and enjoying the vibrant life of the ancient alley, you can walk slowly and completely relax your body and mind. It is perfect for couples looking for leisure, families seeking a relaxing getaway, or solo travelers on a short trip. Evening is the most beautiful time in the old alley. The soft sunset glow spills over the old loess walls, creating gentle and lingering light and shadows, while red lanterns sway in the breeze, and the atmosphere is at its peak. Avoiding the heat of the day, the evening breeze is cool and comfortable, making for a relaxing stroll and perfect lighting for photos. ✅ Practical travel guide 📍 Location: Old Alley Scenic Area, Chengguan Town, Longde County, Guyuan City, Ningxia 🚗 Transportation: Driving is recommended. Parking around the scenic area is convenient, and road conditions are good. You can drive directly from downtown Guyuan, making the trip easy and worry-free. ⏰ Duration: 1.5–2 hours; you can stay for half a day if you want to stroll slowly and take photos. 🎫 Admission: Free; no paid activities. 👗 Outfit suggestions: Light-colored, simple, solid-colored outfits are best for photos. Both traditional Chinese style and casual styles work well. 💡 Travel tips 1. The alley has many uneven stone paths, so wearing comfortable flat shoes is recommended for easier walking. 2. In summer, avoid the high heat of midday. Visiting in the evening offers the best experience, as it is cooler and perfect for photos. 3. There are few crowds throughout the area, making it quiet and perfect for a peaceful stroll and immersive photography. 4. You can combine your visit with nearby attractions like Liupan Mountain Forest Park and the Red Army Long March Scenic Area for a one-day trip in Guyuan.

⚠️ Core premise (most important) Yunwu Mountain is a national grassland nature reserve, not a formal tourist attraction! · Official notice: no individual visitors or walk-ins allowed; only school, government, or corporate groups with advance reservations for educational tours are accepted, limited to the experimental zone. Entry to the core and buffer zones is strictly prohibited (strict ecological control, violations will be stopped and penalized) · The “free, open access” online refers only to unofficial roadside spots on the outer edges, experimental zone borders, and herders’ paths. These are not official open areas for sightseeing; there are no visitor services, no restrooms, no supplies, poor signal, and strict patrols 1. Basic overview 📍 Location: Zhaike Township, Yuanzhou District, Guyuan, Ningxia, about 45 km northeast of the city center, elevation 1,800–2,148 m, total area 6,660 hectares; the first national grassland reserve on the Loess Plateau, featuring native grasslands, mist, wind turbines, meadows with wildflowers, and wildlife like elk and foxes • Zones: core zone (no entry), buffer zone (no entry), experimental zone (only compliant groups or brief stops on the edges allowed) 2. Best travel time ✅ June–September (summer) is best: green grass, blooming wildflowers, temperatures 15–25℃, cool weather, early morning 6–10 AM often has mist and sea of clouds, perfect for photos; avoid rainy days and heavy fog (slippery, low visibility, easy to get lost) ❌ Winter and spring are dry and yellowed with strong cold winds; autumn is rather bleak 3. Transportation guide (self-driving only recommended) 1. Self-driving (preferred) Navigation: Ningxia Yunwu Mountain National Nature Reserve / Zhaike Township direction; about 1 hour from Guyuan city center, accessible via Guxi Road, sedans can use the main road; parking only on roadside or designated open areas, about 10 yuan fee; strictly no driving off-road to crush grassland or grass turf, violators will be stopped and fined 2. Public transport: highly discouraged and almost impossible—very few rural bus runs, long walks after getting off, no transfers, weak signal 3. Charter car: one-day charter from Guyuan city, can also visit Liupan Mountain and others, suitable for groups and more reliable 4. Compliant travel route (light hiking on outer edges, no entry into restricted zones) Total 3–4 hours, light hiking, casual stroll, no deep entry: 1. Arrive roadside near the entrance between 8:00–9:00 AM; early morning has light mist, soft light, few people, high chance of sea of clouds 2. Walk slowly along existing dirt roads or herders’ paths on gentle slopes at the edges, enjoy continuous meadows, wind turbines, sheep, and Loess Plateau grassland scenery; only follow established trails, do not enter deeper areas, do not climb fences, do not enter core or buffer zones marked with signs 3. Scenic high point: take distant photos of the grassland panorama, wind turbines, and mist; occasionally see elk, cattle, and sheep (observe from afar, do not chase or feed) 4. Return the same way and leave before noon to avoid afternoon crowds, harsh light, and sudden weather changes 5. Clothing & gear checklist (high altitude with strong temperature swings and UV) · Clothing: 10–15℃ temperature difference between day and night! Even in summer, bring a windbreaker or light down jacket; long pants to protect against insects, sun, and grass burrs; non-slip hiking shoes (grass slopes can be slippery) · Sun protection: high SPF sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, face mask; UV rays are very strong · Supplies: enough drinking water, snacks (no stores or supplies available); power bank, offline maps (no signal in deep areas); trash bags, leave no trace, carry out all trash 6. Food & lodging (nearby support) No food, lodging, or shops inside the reserve: · Lunch: return to Guyuan city or eat at local farm restaurants in Zhaike Township, featuring Guyuan beef and lamb, noodles, and grains · Lodging: stay in hotels in Guyuan city for convenience when visiting Liupan Mountain and other nearby attractions the next day 7. Alternative formal attractions (for a safer grassland or Guyuan scenery experience) 1. Liupan Mountain National Forest Park: established attraction, ticket + shuttle, forest streams, cool weather, well-equipped, officially open 2. Grasslands/farms around Guyuan: such as Qishi Family Farm, offering horseback riding, grassland leisure, and compliant activities 3. Liupan Mountain Red Army Long March tourism area: on the way, combining red history and mountain scenery 8. Red lines to avoid & important reminders (most critical) 1. ❌ Strictly no unauthorized entry into core zone, buffer zone, or fenced areas; only brief stops on the outer edges of the experimental zone on existing tracks or paths; strict patrols, removal, accountability, and fines for vegetation damage 2. ❌ Do not crush grassland, pick wildflowers, chase wildlife, light fires or smoke, or leave trash; practice leave-no-trace travel 3. ❌ Immediately retreat if weather changes suddenly (strong wind, showers, heavy fog); highland weather is unpredictable, no signal, easy to get lost or suffer hypothermia 4. For formal educational tours: contact the Yunwu Mountain Reserve Management Bureau to book group science tours in the name of an organization or school; individual bookings are not accepted In short: Yunwu Mountain is suitable for self-driving roadside stops to see grasslands and sea of clouds, not for deep exploration as a scenic area; for a comfortable and safe Guyuan mountain and water experience, prioritize Liupan Mountain Forest Park.

📸 Here are some must-visit photo spots: the upward view from the foot of the Tang Dynasty Maitreya Buddha on Xumi Mountain 📷, the creekside boardwalk in front of Xiaonanchuan Waterfall on Liupan Mountain 🌊, the sunset on the Danxia glass suspension bridge at Huoshizhai 🌅, the old alley with blue bricks and gray tiles in Longde 🧱, and the spiral patterns of the Jinjiping terraced fields 🌀. Wear a white dress or a light-colored long skirt for picture-perfect shots anytime. 🚌 Transportation tips upfront: Guyuan currently has no high-speed rail. The most reliable way from other cities is to fly to Yinchuan and then transfer by regular train or bus. You can also fly directly to Guyuan Liupan Mountain Airport. Taxi starting fare in the city is 6 yuan. Xumi Mountain is 55 km away. If you don’t drive, take the "Guyuan–Sanying" bus from the bus station, then taxi into the scenic area. A private car for a day costs 300–350 yuan to cover Xumi Mountain and Huoshizhai. You can book a private car product directly on Trip.com. There is a dedicated intercity bus to the Liupan Mountain Red Army Long March Scenic Area. It costs 15 yuan per person from Guyuan city and takes 1 hour 40 minutes one way 🚐. 🌤️ In August, daytime temperatures in Guyuan range from 21 to 28℃, dropping to 13–17℃ at night. The Ningxia Meteorological Service rates the whole city as very suitable for summer cooling. But sudden showers and thunderstorms can come anytime, so don’t forget a light jacket, sunscreen, and a foldable umbrella 🧥☂️. 🎫 Ticket booking tips: Xumi Mountain grotto ticket plus round-trip shuttle bus for adults is 68 yuan. Booking in advance on Trip.com is more convenient than buying on-site. Liupan Mountain National Forest Park ticket plus round-trip shuttle bus is 88 yuan. Huoshizhai combo ticket costs 60–80 yuan. Guyuan Museum is free but requires ID reservation. Liupan Mountain Red Army Long March Scenic Area is free. During peak season weekends, it’s best to book tickets on Trip.com a day in advance to avoid long lines 🙅‍♀️. 🗺️ Detailed 3-day itinerary (tested with no detours): Day 1 cultural silk route Head straight to Xumi Mountain grottoes in the morning. The 20.06-meter Tang Dynasty Maitreya Buddha is hidden on the Danxia mountain slope. Remember to look back while climbing the steps—the panoramic view is breathtaking 🗿. In the afternoon, visit Guyuan Museum in the city. The Northern Zhou gilded silver pot and Northern Wei lacquer coffin paintings are national treasures. In the evening, dive into the ancient city night market and enjoy hot Jiangshui noodles and Youxiang pastries. Day 2 forest oxygen route Spend the whole day immersed in Liupan Mountain National Forest Park. Hike the Xiaonanchuan creekside boardwalk for 2 hours. The Liangdian Gorge is densely forested. Stay overnight in Jingyuan county town and try the local steamed chicken at a farmhouse restaurant. Day 3 Danxia + terraced fields route In the morning, visit Huoshizhai to see China’s highest-altitude Danxia landform. Walking on the glass suspension bridge is thrilling and leg-weakening 🌉. In the afternoon, explore the Jinjiping terraced fields. In August, the green waves layer like fingerprints on the earth, and at sunset, the rocks turn golden red. 🍜 Local food recommendations (all my favorites): Jingyuan steamed chicken—free-range mountain chicken steamed with potato pancakes over a wood fire. The pancakes soak up the chicken broth and are irresistibly flavorful 🍗 Hand-pulled lamb—local Tan sheep with no gamey taste, dipped in garlic salt water for a divine flavor 🥩 Raw boiled noodles—beef meatballs with hot and sour soup. One bite and your pores will cheer 🍲 Longde hot pot—copper pot stewed with meatballs and vermicelli. The broth is so fresh you’ll want to lick the bowl 🥘 Buckwheat noodles—freshly pressed high-altitude buckwheat. The cold version is a summer lifesaver 🥗 Jiangshui noodles—fermented pickled vegetables with chili oil, perfect for cooling down 🥣 Yan noodles—green dough dipped in chili oil, with a mint chocolate flavor 🍵 Potato pancakes rolled with honey—a sweet and savory treat for all tastes 🍯 ⚠️ Pitfall tips to keep in mind: The scenic spots are very spread out. If you don’t drive, it’s best to hire a private car; otherwise, you’ll wait forever for rural buses. Try to enter Xumi Mountain and Liupan Mountain in the morning. The afternoon crowds increase and the light gets harsh. Mobile signal is spotty in deep mountain areas, so download offline maps in advance. Budget hotels near the train station have poor soundproofing. Staying near Yuanzhou District Cultural Street in chain hotels for 130–260 yuan per night is more reliable. UV index in August is 7–8. Don’t skimp on sunglasses and sunscreen, or you’ll come back looking like a judge 🌞. The Liupan Mountain small train has a 1-hour queue but only a 5-minute ride. If you’re short on time, consider skipping it 🚃. Guyuan, a small city wrapped by Liupan Mountain, has a natural air conditioner with an average August temperature of 22℃. Combined with grottoes, Danxia landforms, forests, and terraced fields, it’s truly an underrated northwest treasure 💎. Take this guide and experience an 18℃ summer~

The city was melting hot in July. Driving south to Jingyuan, Guyuan, the temperature dropped 15 degrees the moment we got off the highway. The breeze outside the car window was actually cool🧥 ✈️ Transportation test Guyuan Liupan Mountain Airport added three new routes for the 2026 summer and autumn season: Urumqi, Zhengzhou, and Turpan. Now you can fly direct from Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Chengdu, Fuzhou, and Shijiazhuang. Six routes cover 10 cities. The flight from Xi’an takes only 1 hour 10 minutes. Xiamen Airlines operates flights on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. After landing, renting a car and taking the ring expressway to Jingyuan takes less than 1 hour. If you don’t drive, the Guyuan bus station has 4 daily buses to Jingyuan, with tickets priced at 35 yuan. 🏡 Where to stay ⛰️ The guesthouse is hidden deep in Yejia Village, Jinghe Source Town, just a 3–4 minute drive along the scenic road. It’s right next to the entrance of Liupan Mountain Forest Park, within walking distance to Laolongtan and Wild Lotus Valley. ⛰️ The entire stone-built courtyard has a large terrace on the second floor facing the valley. Open the window and you hear the rushing water. In the evening, sitting on the terrace chair enjoying the mountain breeze feels so cool you need a light blanket. ⛰️ The rooms feature all-wood interiors and floor-to-ceiling windows. Waking up to dappled sunlight through the trees is incredibly soothing. The village now has about 100 guesthouses. During the busy summer season, book at least two weeks in advance—if you wait too long, there won’t be any rooms. 📍 Day 1 · Liupan Mountain National Forest Park 🕗 8:30 AM arrive at the gate Peak season tickets cost 65 yuan plus 40 yuan for the shuttle bus. The shuttle bus is a must! The mountain road is 6 km one way and hard to walk. Don’t miss the last bus at 5:30 PM! First, take the bus to Xiaonanchuan—known as the “Little Jiuzhaigou of Northwest China” for good reason. The creek water is crystal clear green, with spruce trees shading the sky on both sides. In July, the temperature feels around 18 degrees. Take a deep breath of the negative oxygen ions to refresh your lungs. 🕙 10:30 AM ecological museum Ningxia’s first ecological science museum. It’s small but thoughtfully arranged. Don’t skip it if you have kids. Half an hour is enough to explore. 🕐 12:00 PM walk through Liangdian Gorge The site where Genghis Khan once built a palace. The gorge is about 3 km deep. Walking along the creek takes about 1.5 hours. The entire route is shaded with no direct sun. You can wade through the creek, so be sure to wear non-slip sandals. 💡 Tip: The ticket gate requires a physical ID! Electronic IDs may not be accepted, especially on holidays. Students must bring the original student ID; screenshots won’t work. 📍 Day 2 · Laolongtan + Wild Lotus Valley 🕗 8:00 AM Laolongtan (ticket 45 yuan) The source of the Jing River, with four stone pools arranged in a zigzag pattern. Water rushes between steep cliffs. You can also visit the Chinese Dragon Culture Palace nearby. The whole area can be explored in 2 hours. Morning light makes the pools look extra clear and green—perfect for photos. 🕐 11:00 AM Wild Lotus Valley (ticket 60 yuan including shuttle) Also called Fragrant Water Gorge, the valley stretches 10 km with towering peaks on both sides. The creek banks are covered with large yellow toad lilies that look like lotus leaves. In July, the yellow flowers are in full bloom, covering the valley in gold. Every photo looks like a painting. Wearing light-colored clothes makes your photos stand out more. The valley’s boardwalk is flat and easy to walk. The full route takes about 2.5 hours. 💡 Lunch: Yejia Village has many farm-to-table restaurants along the road. For 40–60 yuan per person, you can enjoy dishes like smashed potatoes, hand-pulled noodles, and steamed chicken. Portions are generous and flavors authentic. Tested and no disappointments. 📍 Day 3 · Rouge Gorge + Red Army Long March Scenic Area 🕗 8:30 AM Rouge Gorge (ticket 20 yuan) A V-shaped fissure gorge 8 km east of Jingyuan city. Peaks on both sides hold the creek, which is clear and mysterious. The scenery is thrilling and otherworldly. Great value for money. Walking through feels like exploring the earth’s core. The full route takes about 3 hours. 🕐 1:00 PM Liupan Mountain Red Army Long March Scenic Area (ticket 50 yuan plus 30 yuan shuttle) The birthplace of the saying “He who doesn’t reach the Great Wall is not a true man!” The monument at the summit is 2,830 meters above sea level, with an incredibly wide view. The memorial hall is free to visit and very well curated. A guide costs 80 yuan per session. Group tours are more cost-effective when there are many people. 🌡️ What to wear In July, daytime temperatures in Guyuan are 20–23 degrees, but mornings and evenings can drop below 12 degrees. Bring a light down jacket or windbreaker. Don’t skimp on sun protection—the high-altitude UV rays are intense. Use SPF 50+ sunscreen. Sneakers are a must, as there are many rocky sections in the gorges. 💰 Cost summary (per person) Round-trip flight about 1,200 yuan (from Xi’an) | 3-day car rental about 450 yuan | Tickets total about 240 yuan | 2 nights’ accommodation about 500 yuan | Food about 300 yuan | Total around 2,700 yuan Honestly, Guyuan is a seriously underrated summer escape. With 18-degree breezes and endless greenery, just go for it, ladies✨

Chairman Mao wrote "Qing Ping Yue · Liupan Mountain" here. The green mountains and dense forests blend with the profound red history, merging natural beauty with revolutionary culture. Many visitors just stop by the memorial hall and miss the breathtaking panoramic views from the summit. Save this practical guide! 🌍 Basic info about the scenic area Liupan Mountain Red Army Long March Tourist Area is located in Longde County, Guyuan. It has two main sections: ✅ Red Army Long March Memorial Hall (red army hat–shaped building): historical exhibits, artifacts, Long March theme galleries ✅ Victory Peak viewing platform and Red Army trail: hike the route that retraces the Long March crossing, with a summit monument and red flag sculpture as key photo spots Recommended visit order: memorial hall → hike Red Army trail → climb Victory Peak 📸 Four top photo spots worthy of wallpaper status 1. Victory Peak monument [top photo spot] Iconic golden autumn dusk filming location! A giant red flag sculpture stands atop the peak, surrounded by colorful mountains and forests. The sunset’s golden light spreads over the forest sea, with layered mountain views in the distance. Perfect for Fujifilm-style realistic photos, bold and atmospheric with a strong red vibe. 2. Red Army trail iron chain bridge sculpture In spring mornings, mountain mist often lingers. The plank road, ancient pines, and bronze Red Army sculpture complement each other, with distant mountains faintly visible through the fog. A natural Chinese ink painting–style setting, with cinnabar accents on the red sculpture, evoking a poetic mood. 3. 🍜 Food Recommendations The flavors of Guyuan are the kind that leave you wanting more 🥘. Hidden in the old town area of Yuanzhou District are the most authentic hand-pulled lamb. The lamb, stewed in clear water, has absolutely no gamey taste. Dip it in garlic vinegar and serve with a bite of onion; you can have a satisfying meal for around 60 yuan per person. You absolutely must try the raw boiled noodles. Beef balls and hand-pulled noodles tumble in a hot and sour broth—a bowl in the morning will wake you up completely 🌶️ The swallow noodles, kneaded and tossed with chili oil, cooked chives, and minced garlic and vinegar, are chewy and refreshing, with an extra layer of oat flavor compared to cold noodles. Longde hot pot is slow-cooked in a copper pot over charcoal, with vermicelli, meatballs, and pork belly all stewed together—a perfect balance of meat and vegetables. A pot for two costs just over 100 yuan, and it's served with buckwheat noodles—it's incredibly warming and comforting. 🍲 Jingyuan steamed chicken is also worth a special trip. Free-range chicken, potatoes, and flatbread are steamed together; the flatbread soaks up the chicken broth, making it so fragrant you'll want to lick the plate clean. Before heading home, pick up some Jingyuan honey and dried yellow beef. The sweet ones have the flavor of wildflowers from the Liupan Mountains, while the savory ones have a satisfyingly meaty texture—perfect gifts! 🍯 🏨 Accommodation Guide: For accommodation, I recommend using Ctrip as your first choice. The center of Yuanzhou District offers the best value for money. This time, I chose the Atour Hotel near Guyuan Museum, which has a rating of 4.8. It's within walking distance of the museum's food street, and offers panoramic views of Dayuan Square and Guyan Mountain. It includes free parking and a gym. A standard room can be had for just over 300 yuan during the off-season 🛏️ If you're on a tighter budget, the Xiyue Hotel (Municipal Government Branch) on Ctrip has a rating of 4.7. It's close to Guyuan Bus Station and Hongyan Square, making it convenient for getting around and finding food. The Jiulong Hotel (Municipal Government Branch) also has a rating of 4.7, with soft bedding and family rooms suitable for groups of friends. If you plan to head straight to Liupan Mountain the next day, the farmhouses in Jingyuan County are worth considering. They're quiet at night, and you'll be woken up by birdsong in the morning. Chartering a car to Laolongtan and Yehe Valley is also convenient. No matter what type of accommodation you choose, remember to check real-time prices on Ctrip and confirm in advance whether free parking is available—this is crucial if you're driving 🚗 🌿 Recommended Attractions Guyuan's average summer temperature is only 18-24℃, making it an underrated summer paradise ⛰️ Liupanshan National Forest Park must be ranked first, with a forest coverage rate of over 80%. Xiaonanchuan Valley and Liangdian Gorge are included. The entrance fee plus round-trip shuttle bus is 88 yuan. Walking on the forest boardwalks, the negative oxygen ion levels are incredibly high, and the breeze at the mountaintop completely dispels the hustle and bustle of the city. The Xumishan Grottoes are a treasure of Buddhist art along the Silk Road. Statues from the Northern Wei to the Tang Dynasty stretch along the cliff face, and the 20.6-meter-tall Buddha statue is breathtaking. Tickets plus a sightseeing bus cost 68 yuan, and it's much less crowded than Dunhuang, so you don't have to fight for a good spot to take photos 🙏 The Danxia landforms of Huoshizhai are rare dark red mountains in Northwest China. The Yuntaishan Glass Suspension Bridge spans the red canyon; wearing a light-colored dress will result in a fantastic photo opportunity. 📸 Laolongtan is the source of the Jing River, with emerald pools, cascading waterfalls, and shallow beaches where you can wade in the water. The Guyuan Museum offers free admission by reservation, and its prized possessions include a Northern Wei gilded silver ewer and Persian silver coins. After learning about the history of the Silk Road, you'll have a clear understanding of its historical context. 📌 Travel Tips In July, Guyuan's daytime temperature is around 25 degrees Celsius, but it drops to 14-15 degrees Celsius in the mornings and evenings. It's even colder at the top of Liupan Mountain, so pack a light windbreaker or jacket. Even a thick blanket won't keep you warm at night 🧥. The ultraviolet radiation is doubled due to the high altitude and loess soil, so sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are essential. The scenic areas are 40 minutes to an hour and a half apart by car. Driving or hiring a car is the most comfortable option, costing around 300-400 yuan per day. Public transportation is extremely inconvenient, and there may be no cell phone signal in the deep mountains. Download offline maps in advance 📶 Most restaurants are halal; respect local customs and do not mention pork or bring in outside food. It's recommended to buy attraction tickets in advance on Ctrip, which can save you 5-10 yuan. Students get half-price tickets, and those over 60 are admitted free. High school and middle school students also enjoy free admission during the summer vacation 🎫 A classic three-day itinerary could be: Day 1: Arrive in Guyuan → Xumishan Mountain → Museum → Enjoy mutton offal noodles in the city; Day 2: Liupanshan Forest Park → Laolongtan; Day 3: Huoshizhai → Enjoy hot pot in Longde Old Alley before returning home. This relaxed pace allows you to capture the coolness and vibrant atmosphere of Guyuan in your memories 🎒✨

Honestly, before I went, my impression of Guyuan was limited to the phrase "Xihai Gu." After visiting, my whole perspective was turned upside down. This small city in southern Ningxia holds one of China’s top 10 grottoes, the largest Danxia landform group in northern China, and the last mountain the Red Army crossed during the Long March—any one of these alone would be a bragging point for other cities. But here, they’re all packed together, and the city keeps it low-key like a quiet gem. 🗿 Xumishan | Grottoes 100 years older than Dunhuang, I’m in awe Xumishan grottoes are hidden on the Danxia cliffs on the northern slope of Liupan Mountain, 55 km northwest of Guyuan city center. Tickets cost 60 yuan including the museum. Shuttle bus round trip is 20 yuan. Open 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM in summer. There are 162 caves spread across 8 peaks, with over 500 statues dating from the Northern Wei to the Ming and Qing dynasties. When I stood in Cave 5 of the Great Buddha Hall looking up at the 20.6-meter Maitreya Buddha, my neck got sore but I couldn’t tear my eyes away. Craftsmen from the Northern Zhou period carved this massive figure into red sandstone, one chisel stroke at a time. Just imagining that scene gives me goosebumps. Caves 45 and 46 in the Yuanguang Temple area are Northern Wei masterpieces, with murals and statues remarkably well preserved. Cave 51 in Xiangguo Temple is the largest cave from the Northern Zhou, with seven large Buddhas lined up, imposing and majestic. The cliffside plank road in the Peach Blossom Cave area makes your legs weak, but the Song dynasty grottoes are right above your head, almost within reach. ⚠️ Note: The Xumishan museum will be temporarily closed for flood season repairs in July 2026, but the grottoes themselves remain open and core sightseeing is unaffected. It’s recommended to hire a guide (50 yuan per session) because just looking at the rocks alone misses a lot of information. 🔴 Huoshizhai | China’s highest Danxia landform, red beyond belief Huoshizhai is 15 km north of Xiji County. Tickets plus shuttle bus cost 78 yuan for adults. If you want to try the glass suspension bridge or zipline, buy the 110 yuan all-access pass. Open 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Here’s the thing: when you stand on the Yuntai Mountain viewing platform, you see a whole range of dark red mountains burning among the greenery. The visual impact is totally different from Zhangye in Gansu. Zhangye looks like horizontal layers of colorful silk, while Huoshizhai is a vertical wall of flames. Over 100 million years of geological changes have sculpted the red sandstone into bizarre shapes—the Eagle and Snake Peaks look like two giant pythons entwined, and the natural stone city looks like a fortress forgotten by time. The glass suspension bridge spans between two Danxia peaks. When I reached the middle and looked down, my legs shook like crazy but I kept shouting “again.” If you’re afraid of heights, be cautious, but if you’re brave, it’s a thrill that will make you scream. 🚩 Liupan Mountain Red Army Long March Tourist Area | The 5A rating is well deserved Upgraded to 5A at the end of 2024, the memorial hall is free but requires a reservation. Shuttle bus round trip costs 30 yuan. The 2.5 km Red Army trail features 18 miniature displays along the way, laying out the major events of the Long March. I walked the whole trail and lingered at the Poetry Platform—“The sky is high and clouds are light, watching the southbound wild geese disappear.” Standing at that altitude and spot, you really understand why Chairman Mao wrote those lines. It’s best to arrive before 9 AM when it’s less crowded. The morning light on the memorial square creates especially photogenic shadows. 🏛️ Guyuan Museum | Free but packed with treasures A national first-class museum, the “Millennium Guyuan · Silk Road Splendor” general history exhibition is free. The three main treasures are: Northern Wei lacquered coffin paintings, Northern Zhou gilded silver pot, and a studded glass bowl. The gilded silver pot is in the style of the Persian Sassanian dynasty, engraved with Greek mythology stories, brought to Guyuan over 1,000 years ago via the Silk Road—standing in front of it is like standing at the crossroads of Eastern and Western civilizations. Open 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM in summer, last entry at 4:30 PM, closed Mondays. City buses go directly there. You won’t spend a dime but can easily spend over two hours exploring. 🗺️ Suggested 3-day itinerary: Day 1: Guyuan Museum (morning) → Xumishan grottoes (afternoon, best light for photos) Day 2: Huoshizhai (all day, Danxia sunrise and sunset are stunning) → Jiangtaibao Red Army reunion memorial park (on the way, free) Day 3: Liupan Mountain Red Army Long March tourist area (morning) → return trip or add a day at the forest park 🚗 Travel tips: → The high-speed rail from Guyuan to Pingliang will only start trial runs at the end of the year, so in July you’ll still need to drive or fly → Attractions are far apart: Xumishan is 55 km from the city, Huoshizhai is 15 km from Xiji County. Without a car, it’s really hard to get around → Driving on the Fuyin Expressway is smooth, but speed limits in Gansu are strict. Don’t speed 💰 Cost reference (per person): Xumishan: 80 yuan (ticket + shuttle) Huoshizhai: 78–110 yuan Liupan Mountain Long March area: 30 yuan (shuttle) Guyuan Museum + Jiangtaibao: free Total for three days: about 200–220 yuan Food and lodging extra. Local prices are low; a meal of hand-pulled lamb costs about 40–50 yuan per person and is very filling. One last thing—Guyuan isn’t the kind of place that makes you say “wow, so beautiful” and then forget it after posting on social media. It’s the kind of place where standing beneath a thousand-year-old Buddha, on the ridge of red Danxia mountains, or atop the last mountain of the Long March, you suddenly feel time become very deep and thick. That depth can’t be captured in photos—you have to experience it yourself.

July in Guyuan is truly refreshing. While other cities are melting from the heat, here you still need a light blanket at night. Save this guide first and follow it to avoid any pitfalls👇 🧥 essential outfits Don’t be fooled by the word "midsummer." In Liupan Mountain, the sun blazes during the day, but under the shade, it’s instantly cool, and mornings and evenings can even feel a bit chilly.
