The canyon isn’t long, about 1.5 kilometers in total, but the drops are concentrated. The triple-tiered waterfall crashes down in succession, with the largest drop nearly 40 meters. Standing about ten meters below the waterfall, the mist can soak your clothes. July is when the waterfall is at its fullest, and the roaring echoes through the canyon—you have to shout close to be heard. The pool water is a deep dark green. Help! I saw the most beautiful starry sky of my life in Guyuan! It wasn't just a few scattered stars; it was the Milky Way densely packed across the entire sky, so many that it would trigger trypophobia! ✨ First, let's talk about why Guyuan is great for stargazing I've seen starry skies in many places before, but Guyuan's is truly different—high altitude, minimal light pollution, dry air, and many clear days in summer. The conditions for stargazing are simply top-tier. The guesthouse I stayed at was on a mountain, with no other buildings around. When the lights went out at night, the whole world was left with only stars. When I stepped out on the first night, I was so awestruck I couldn't speak—the stars in the sky were like a handful of scattered diamonds, and even the Milky Way was clearly visible, visible to the naked eye. I sat in the courtyard for almost two hours, gazing up at the stars. My neck ached, but I just didn't want to look down. I felt completely enveloped by the starry sky; it was incredibly healing. 🏛️ Xumishan Grottoes: A Buddhist Kingdom on the Silk Road Besides stargazing, another must-visit place in Guyuan is the Xumishan Grottoes, one of China's top ten grottoes, dating from the Northern Wei to the Tang Dynasty, full of historical significance. The grottoes are located on the foothills of Mount Liupan, with a total of 162 caves. The largest Buddha statue is over 20 meters tall. Standing beneath it and looking up, you'll truly be awestruck by its solemnity. What impressed me most was the Grand Buddha Pavilion, where the seated Maitreya Buddha statue is particularly magnificent. The expressions on its face are clearly visible, and it's said to be over 1,500 years old. Besides the grottoes, the Danxia landform of Xumishan is also incredibly beautiful. The red mountains paired with the ancient grottoes create a very special atmosphere. The Danxia landform behind the Grand Buddha is an excellent photo spot; I took many pictures there, and every shot looked great. The entire scenic area takes about three hours to explore. Walking slowly and taking your time, you won't get tired, and it's especially cool on the mountain, so it's perfectly fine to visit in summer. 🌾 Jinjiping Terraces: Fingerprints on the Earth There's also the Jinjiping Terraced Fields Park, which is quite beautiful. It's in Pengyang County, about an hour's drive from the city center. These 28 square kilometers of dryland terraces are layered, one after another. Looking down from the mountain, they resemble fingerprints on the earth, truly spectacular. In July, the terraces are all green, and the sunlight creates rich layers, a must-visit for photography enthusiasts. I went in the afternoon, and the sunlight slanted across the terraces, creating beautiful light and shadow. Observation Deck No. 1 is the best viewing spot, offering a panoramic view of the entire terraces. Standing there for a long time, I felt completely healed. The terraces are free to enter and open all day, offering excellent value. If you have ample time, you can explore the surrounding area. The village is very quiet and has a distinct Northwestern feel. 🏜️ Huoshizhai Danxia Landform: Red Mountains, Green Forests I also visited Huoshizhai. Although I mentioned it in the ninth post, I still want to talk about it again—because it's truly stunning! The red Danxia landform and green forests intertwine, creating a magical contrast. I climbed to Yuntai Jindin (Cloud Terrace Golden Summit), and looking down from the mountaintop, red mountains lay beneath my feet, green forests stretched in the distance, all set against a blue sky and white clouds, looking just like a painting. There's also a glass skywalk on the mountain; if you're brave, you can walk across it. The view from the bridge offers a different sensation. I wasn't brave enough, so I watched others walk, which was also quite interesting. Another feature of Huoshizhai is its coolness. Although it's a Danxia landform, its high altitude and abundant vegetation mean it's not hot at all in summer, making it comfortable to explore all day. 🌌 My Stargazing Journey Back to stargazing, I specifically planned two nights to watch the stars— The first night, I watched from the guesthouse courtyard, lying down, which was incredibly comfortable, and I even saw several meteors; The second night, I drove to a more remote area with no light pollution. The starry sky was even brighter, and the Milky Way was so clear it felt like I could touch it. I also tried to photograph the starry sky with my phone. Although the photos weren't as stunning as what I saw with my eyes, they were still quite beautiful. I recommend bringing a camera; the photos you take will definitely blow up your social media. Oh, and be sure to bring a thick jacket for stargazing! It gets really cold on the mountain at night. I wore a down jacket and still felt a bit chilly. Don't get sick trying to look good. 💡 Stargazing + Summer Escape Double Tips 1. For stargazing, always choose a clear night. The beginning or end of the lunar month is best, as a bright moon will affect the view. 2. It gets very cold on the mountain at night, so be sure to bring a thick jacket, preferably a down jacket. Don't try to tough it out. 3. For Xumishan, I recommend hiring a guide. Otherwise, it's just a bunch of rocks; with a guide, you'll learn the stories behind them. 4. The Jinjiping Terraces are best visited in the afternoon when the slanted sunlight creates the most beautiful light and shadow. 5. Guyuan's attractions are spread out, so self-driving is recommended. You can go wherever you want and stop to enjoy the scenery anytime. I stayed in Guyuan for six days, exploring attractions during the day and stargazing at night. It was incredibly fulfilling.
