Booking and Boarding: As of right now, when snagging your sleeper tickets to Aswan online or at the ticket counter, you must select "Upper Egypt (Bashtil)" as your departure station. The classic Ramses Station is no longer serving these scenic sleeper routes. The new station rocks a stunning ceiling too! The centerpiece of the new Bashtil Station is a towering 40-meter glass pyramid flanked by four obelisks, making it equally jaw-dropping.

Here are some lessons learnt from my recent trip to Egypt. 📚Learn about ancient Egypt. There are many ancient sites, and after a while they can seem very similar if you do not know what you are actually looking at. 📋Do the right amount of research. There’s lots to see, so plan your trip. But keep an open mind for spontaneous changes. 🏛️Visit smaller sites. There will likely be much fewer people. I especially loved Esna. 📱Use the Experience Egypt app for entrance tickets. They can be bought very spontaneously. 🎫 But DO book tickets for the Grand Egyptian Museum ahead. 🗣️Deal with sellers. You know they will be there. Stay calm and friendly but persistent. 👆Don’t ignore the less ancient sites. In Cairo, mosques, churches and museums are cool. Also spend some time in local city parks, they can get festive in the evenings. 🔍Notice the little things. Outside the tourists sites, local life is so colorful and interesting. 💷 Keep cash on you to pay in small stores, but also at petrol stations in the desert (and Giza). Don’t be shy to give a tip if you are satisfied with any service. 🚗 Keep your eyes on the road. Road conditions are often quite good. But there are many speed bumps and they can be hard to spot. 🚕When using Uber, be ready to translate Arabic numbers. License plates are mostly in Arabic. Obviously much smaller than the tombs of the pharaos, those of the workers are also less crowded. In Deir el-Medina you can study the paintings by yourself. Only the guard may be in there with you. He may offer to take videos for you. Only accept if you are willing to get into the usual discussion about a tip. Only four (I remember) tombs are open to visitors. The main one, TT3 of Pashedu (📷1-2), requires an extra ticket. The others are for Amenakht (📷3-4), Sennedjem (📷5-6), and Inherkah (📷7-8). My main memories of Hatscheptsut’s mortuary temple are too many people, harsh sun, and dry heat. Probably, visiting in the early afternoon wasn’t ideal. Possibly in the early morning, with the low sun shining directly on it, it may be more photogenic. But we wanted a relaxed morning for a change. And anyways, this temple turned out to be low on my list of Must-Visit sites in Egypt. It is different from others in how it is built into the side of the hills. But much of its interior is closed to visitors. And what is outside is not that spectacular compared to other sites, even close by ones like Medinat Hadu. Because we missed Hatscheptsut’s grave in the Valley of the Kings, I’m glad I came here. But the grave and the temple seem quite similar from the outside. Dendera is a strong candidate for my favorite ancient site in Egypt. The scale and condition of the temple is fantastic. It’s easy to spend hours inside, exploring the different halls and chambers, and the countless hieroglyphs. There are “hidden” spaces you only reach by crawling through small openings. The catacombs require an extra ticket, which is cheap and totally worth it. Not worth is the extra ticket for the panorama roof, though it’s also cheap, so you may as well… We stayed in Qena to get a relaxed early start at the temple. It was worth it as we beat the tour groups by at least one hour. We were not alone in Dendera, but there were very few people in the early morning and it was nicely quiet. Also, the light is especially good earlier in the day. Qena itself is a lively small city. We stayed in Elyasmene Hotel and ate at Boska Qena on the bank of the Nile. If this is your first time visiting Egypt, or if you only want to see one temple, it must be Karnak. I wanted to appreciate it more quietly, so I entered the temple alone at six in the morning. There were no crowds, only wild animals seeking shade under the colonnades. Entering the gate, the first thing you see is the hypostyle hall with 134 colossal columns, followed by obelisks and the Avenue of the Sphinxes—each a masterpiece of the empire's golden age. After passing the Avenue of the Sphinxes, you enter the heart of the temple. On the east bank of the Nile, the sun gradually rises, and the colonnades begin to display changing shapes of light. As the sun's angle slowly changes, different columns are illuminated in turn, as if the sunlight is reading the stories on the reliefs. The shifting light and shadow are like the myth unfolding to the next chapter. Karnak is the earliest temple in Luxor, embodying all the splendor of ancient Egypt. The temple contains countless masterpieces, but the most famous is the hypostyle hall with its 134 colossal columns. The hall, built over the reigns of three pharaohs, represents the pinnacle of ancient Egypt's powerful era. The colonnade had originally collapsed, and due to the Nile's flooding, the base reliefs were largely eroded. However, later archaeological restoration has restored its magnificent original appearance. Behind the colonnade lies another national treasure of Karnak: the obelisk of Queen Hatshepsut. This set of obelisks originally consisted of a pair; the other had collapsed. The obelisks record the queen's great achievements. Karnak Temple was truly one of the most shocking sites on my Egyptian itinerary! The scale is so large that you can walk to your feet, and each pillar is incredibly huge. Standing in the 134 magnificent Greek Columns (Hypostyle Hall), you will really feel overwhelmed by civilization. The carvings on each wall and on each column are very intricate, recording the story of war, myth and pharaoh, and you will find many small details if you walk a little slower. This is the largest temple complex in Egypt and the religious center of ancient Egypt, so it is recommended to be sure to reserve 2–3 hours is just right.
