The sunlight tilts, and the reds, yellows, and oranges of the Danxia light up like they’re on fire, revealing all the layers. The shuttle stops at four viewing platforms. Don’t waste time at the first stop—go straight to the fourth, “Colorful Rainbow Platform,” for the widest view and richest colors. Spend half a day the next day at Matisi Temple. Admission is 73 yuan. Built on a cliff, the 33 Heavenly Caves require climbing with hands and feet. The narrow passage fits only one person at a time. Henan’s Zhoukou hides the roots of Chinese civilization. 📍 Taihao Fuxi Mausoleum Cultural Tourism Area, admission 60 yuan. Ancient cypresses tower here, many over a thousand years old, with thriving incense offerings. When I visited, many elderly pilgrims from other places were walking reverently around the tomb. You don’t need to know much history—just walking among the ancient cypresses calms the heart. Nearby is Taiqing Palace, where Laozi taught. Admission is 30 yuan. Compared to the lively Fuxi Mausoleum, it’s much quieter and perfect for a slow solo stroll. ⚠️ Vendors selling “blessed souvenirs” at the entrance charge inflated prices. If you want to buy, go to Guandi Temple Street in the city. The same items are half the price. I recommend staying in Huaiyang District, close to the scenic area. At night, you can stroll by Long Lake and enjoy a bowl of hot spicy soup with fried dough sticks for about 50 yuan per person. It’s very comfortable. 06 Zhenjiang | Jiangsu Zhenjiang is a small city overshadowed by Nanjing, but when it comes to food, it’s just as good. The vinegar here is so fragrant you can drink it. 🍜 In the morning, visit Jinshan Temple, admission 65 yuan. This is the Jinshan from the Legend of the White Snake. The temple is built on a mountain, with layers from foot to summit. From the top, you can see the mighty Yangtze River. Afterward, turn into the alley opposite Jinshan Park and find any noodle shop. Order a bowl of guogai noodles. The noodles are pressed with bamboo sticks, topped with freshly stir-fried pork kidney or long fish. The broth is delicious and comforting. In the afternoon, visit Beigu Mountain, admission 40 yuan. It’s small but home to the “First River and Mountain Under Heaven” archway. The story of Liu Bei’s marriage proposal at Ganlu Temple happened here. At sunset, stand on Beigu Tower and watch the sun set over the river. The vastness will help you understand why Xin Qiji wrote “Where to gaze upon the divine land.” ⚠️ Jiaoshan requires a ferry ride. If short on time, skip it. Zhenjiang is small; a day and a half is enough. Stay near Xijin Ferry for easy access to the old street and snacks. Around 150 yuan per person offers great accommodation. 07 Fangchenggang | Guangxi If you don’t want to go to Beihai for crowded beaches, come to Fangchenggang. The earth forest in Chuxiong is the most Mars-like place I’ve seen. 📍 Yuanmou Earth Forest admission is 70 yuan. Once inside, you’ll wonder if you’ve landed on another planet. The earth pillars are bizarre—some look like castles, others like swords. At noon, the shadows are sharp. I recommend entering after 3 PM when the light is most dimensional, perfect for portraits. There’s almost no shade, so wear a hat and apply plenty of sunscreen. Nearby Wumao Earth Forest is similar in style. Choose one to visit. I prefer Yuanmou because it’s larger and feels more adventurous. The next day, return to Chuxiong city and visit Yi Ancient Town. It’s newly built but hosts free Yi ethnic bonfire parties at night with singing and dancing. The atmosphere is great. Follow this guide, and you’re unlikely to go wrong. 1️⃣ Tonghua City | Jilin While others rush to Changbai Mountain in Jilin, I spent three days in Tonghua. The Goguryeo relics aren’t those newly restored fake antiques. The city walls and the Stele of King Gwanggaeto still carry the stone’s ancient patina from a thousand years ago. After 4 PM, the slanting light hits the stele, making the carvings especially clear. ⚠️ The scenic area closes at 5 PM. Don’t arrive too late. Plan at least an hour to see the stele. The canola flower sea in Ji’an is just wrapping up at the end of August. The yellow isn’t intense, but paired with the distant Yalu River and mountain shadows, it’s more pleasing than the glaring yellow of midsummer. 📍 Walk 200 meters east from the flower sea entrance to find a dirt path. Turn in to shoot flower fields without crowds. Avoid squeezing in with tour groups at the main gate. 🍜 Near the old station in the city, try the Korean cold noodles. The broth has ice shards, perfect with Guo Bao Rou (sweet and sour pork). Ride-sharing is cheaper, just over 30 yuan. 7️⃣ Zhoukou City | Henan Zhoukou isn’t a tourist city, but the Taihao Fuxi Mausoleum is seriously underrated. The whole site covers over 800 acres with towering ancient cypress trees. The oldest is said to date back to the Han dynasty, with bark as hard as iron. ⏰ It opens at 8 AM. Arrive early to avoid crowds and hear the rustling of cypress leaves in the wind. It’s very peaceful. Taiqing Palace is in Luyi County, a bit far from the city but worth a separate trip. Laojuntai is where Laozi supposedly taught. The platform isn’t high, but standing there offers an endless view of the plains, a completely different experience from southern mountains. 🍜 Luyi’s specialty is Shiliang dog meat. I was hesitant but tried a bite after a friend’s encouragement. The meat is firm and delicious dipped in garlic paste, perfect with baked flatbread. ⚠️ The two scenic spots are far apart. Don’t visit both in one day or you’ll waste all your time traveling. Accommodation in Zhoukou city is cheap. You can stay in a good chain hotel for 150 yuan. 8️⃣ Yichang City | Hubei The Yangtze Three Gorges section in Yichang has perfect water levels in August and September. The river is as green as jade. In the afternoon, visit Taiqing Palace. ⚠️ Note there are many steps here, so don’t force a stroller. It’s easier to carry your child and stroll around lightly. Stay overnight in Huaiyang District, where hotels are plentiful and dining with kids is convenient. 2️⃣ Hefei | Anhui Sanhe Ancient Town is best visited in the evening. ⏰ The light is perfect just before sunset. The cobblestone streets have been warmed all day, making them pleasantly warm underfoot. 📍 Enter from the south gate and walk along the Xiaonan River. You’ll find rice wine shops and maltose stalls along the way, which will make kids want to stop every few steps. 🍜 Try the Sanhe rice dumplings, freshly fried with a crispy shell and filling of dried tofu and dried shrimp—kids love them too. ⚠️ Avoid visiting at noon when there’s little shade and the sun is harsh. Stay overnight near Swan Lake in the city, where dining options are plentiful and it’s convenient to visit the Hefei Science and Technology Museum the next day. 3️⃣ Urumqi | Xinjiang August in Urumqi is cool enough in the morning and evening to want a jacket, but midday gets truly hot. Visit the International Grand Bazaar in the morning. 📍 Enter from the Jiefang South Road gate and stroll all the way to the pedestrian street. Kids will be drawn to the various dried fruit stalls, sampling raisins and almonds freely. 🍜 For lunch, find a pilaf restaurant on the pedestrian street. Lamb leg pilaf with yogurt comes in large portions—two servings are enough for a family of three. In the afternoon, head to Hongguang Mountain. ⏰ Go after 4 PM when the wind is strong at the summit, offering a panoramic city view. ⚠️ There’s no shade on the mountain, so bring hats and water. Dabancheng is a bit far; if short on time, skip it. Lines on site can be frustratingly long. 6️⃣ Panjin | Liaoning The Red Beach in Panjin is best viewed in September, but late August is still okay as the Suaeda grass starts turning red. ⏰ Enter the scenic area at 5 PM when the light hits at an angle, highlighting the layers of red tidal flats and green reeds. Yalong Bay’s sand is finer than Dadonghai’s, feeling like flour underfoot—perfect for laying a mat and letting kids dig while you relax. Choose either Daxiaodongtian or Nanshan. ⏰ Pick Nanshan for the sea-view Guanyin statue—kids will remember it for a long time. 🍜 For dinner, go to the First Market for seafood. Buy fresh seafood and have it cooked at a nearby restaurant. Avoid eating near the scenic spots—it’s expensive and not fresh. When traveling with kids, don’t pack the itinerary too tightly. One main attraction per day and leave half a day to rest at the hotel. Kids stay calm and you won’t get exhausted. Before 8 AM, the town is almost empty, wild ducks stroll by the wetlands, and if you sit by the laundry pavilion, you can hear the water flowing and birds singing. Don’t rush to buy a combo ticket. First, walk around the outskirts of the ancient town. Enter from the main gate and stroll to the library. After 10 AM, when tourists arrive, it’s time to leave. ⏰ At 2 PM, go to Tengchong Volcano Hot Sea Tourist Area. Upon entering, take the electric cart to Frog Mouth, then walk down the boardwalk. The smell of sulfur mixed with mist hits your face. Ticket prices follow the official daily announcement, but it’s recommended to buy tickets online in advance to avoid lines. ⚠️ Don’t visit Yunfeng Mountain and Beihai Wetland on the same day. Yunfeng Mountain requires a two-hour climb up stairs, so it’s not suitable for those with leg issues. Beihai Wetland is better in the evening when the grass rafts float on the water and the light is best at a slant. Parking is convenient at both places if you drive, but the mountain roads have many curves, so new drivers should go slow. 2️⃣ Zhoukou | Henan Taihao Fuxi Mausoleum and Taiqing Palace are close to each other. I suggest visiting Taihao Fuxi Mausoleum in the morning. After touring, it will be around noon. Have some local snacks at the scenic area entrance, then visit Taiqing Palace in the afternoon. 🍜 The spicy soup with fried dough sticks on the street outside Taihao Fuxi Mausoleum was my favorite breakfast on this trip. The mausoleum area is small and can be covered in two hours. The highlights are the ancient cypress trees and Tongtian Hall. Don’t miss the ancient tree in front of the hall. Taiqing Palace was much quieter than I expected, with few tourists, making it perfect for a slow visit. You have to climb to Laojuntai behind the mountain gate to overlook the entire scenic area with a wide view. The best light is from 3 to 5 PM, which looks especially good on the red walls. ⚠️ Both places are less crowded on Mondays, but Taiqing Palace clears out by 5 PM, so don’t arrive too late. It’s less than a 30-minute drive from Zhoukou city center with good roads, so new drivers won’t have trouble. 3️⃣ Chenzhou | Hunan I advise against visiting Gaoyiling Danxia and Dongjiang Lake Tourist Area in one day—it’s too rushed. Go to Gaoyiling first before 8 AM while the light is still soft. The Danxia rock formations glow red. The full route takes about three hours with many stairs but has rest stops along the way. If you have kids, enter from the south gate for a gentler route. Have a casual lunch at the scenic area entrance, then drive to Dongjiang Lake Tourist Area in the afternoon. 📍 Navigate to Xiaodongjiang Mist Viewing Platform. The mist is thickest from 4 to 6 PM. The fishermen casting nets is a regular show. Stand on the boardwalk and wait, but don’t push to the front or your photos will be full of heads. Mangshan Wuzhifeng is best visited on a separate day. The cable car goes up and down, and it’s windy at the top, so bring a light jacket even in summer. ⏰ Try to catch the first cable car. After 10 AM, tour groups arrive and lines are at least 40 minutes. You can buy grilled fish by the lake, sprinkled with chili powder, to eat while walking. 4️⃣ Yancheng | Jiangsu Dafeng China Milu Park is the most natural-feeling zoo I’ve seen. The deer are much more relaxed than the people. Drive in, roll down your window, and the milu deer will come over for carrots. A bag costs 10 yuan. Don’t buy too many because they lose interest after a while. 📍 The park is divided into walking and driving areas. The soup is heavily peppered, and one sip warms you from tongue to stomach—especially refreshing on cold days. ⚠️ The Taihao Mausoleum is very popular for incense offerings. On the 1st and 15th of the lunar month, it’s crowded. For a quiet visit to the ancient buildings, weekday afternoons are best. 4️⃣ Changji | Xinjiang Changji isn’t a typical tourist city, but the wheat fields of Jiangbulake are, I dare say, the most underrated scenery in all Xinjiang. I went in late July. The wheat was a mix of yellow and green, and when the wind blew, the whole hillside looked like flowing silk. 🚄 It’s about a two-hour drive from Urumqi. The mountain roads are winding, so if you get car sick, bring medicine. Tianshan Tianchi is famous but overcrowded. I prefer to save time for Wucaiwan. Its yardang landforms turn various shades of reddish brown at sunset, like the earth’s cracked wounds—so dramatic it leaves you speechless. ⚠️ Wucaiwan is very windy and sandy. Sunglasses and masks are a must, or you’ll have sand in your mouth every time you open it. If you must visit Tianshan in summer, arrive before 10 AM to avoid tour groups and skip long lines for the shuttle. 🍜 Changji city’s meatball soup is a standout. The sunset in Shuanglang is prettier and you don’t have to pay for a boat ride. ⚠️ If cycling around Erhai Lake, the ecological corridor on the west shore is easier to ride. The east shore often requires sharing the road with motor vehicles, which is less safe. If you’re with elders, rent a car to circle the lake, stopping and going at your own pace. Avoid electric bikes—the wind can cause headaches. 6️⃣ Shennongjia | Hubei Shennongjia isn’t just a mountain; it’s a whole forest. I stayed in Muyuzhen. The light slants into the forest, the waterfall mist hits your face, and with fewer people, the experience is better. In the afternoon, head to Wanfo Lake. It’s great for a boat ride. The lake is wide and breezy, so it’s not stuffy. ⚠️ The last boat leaves at 4:30 PM. Don’t arrive too close to that time; long lines might make you miss it. Food inside the park is pricey. It’s much quieter with a faint incense scent, perfect for resting after a tiring morning. ⏰ After 2 PM is best. Fewer people and you can find a stone bench in the courtyard to sit. ⚠️ Both places are cultural and better suited for kids in elementary school or older. Preschoolers might find it boring. Bring some snacks to eat while walking to keep them going longer. 7️⃣ Qiannan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture | Guizhou Libo Zhangjiang is what I call the ultimate water play spot for kids. The water at Xiaoqikong is emerald green and crystal clear. Kids want to jump right in. The park has a special area for visitors to step in the water. The water barely covers the ankles and feels refreshingly cool—summer lifesaver. ⏰ Be sure to enter the park in the morning. The light on the water is best then. Afternoons get crowded and the water gets murkier. With kids, don’t do the whole route. At dusk, smoke rises from cooking fires, full of life. Yuelu Mountain is free. Enter from the south gate and take the small path up. It’s more interesting than the main road. Streams run through the forest, and it’s not stuffy in summer. The provincial museum requires booking 3 days in advance. It’s free but popular. The Mawangdui Han tomb exhibits are worth a special trip. Lady Xin Zhui’s coffin is right in front of you. The impact is stronger than any documentary. 🍜 Huaminglou is a bit out of the way, but Liu Shaoqi’s former residence courtyard is quiet and perfect for resting when tired. I’ve personally been to these 8 places where summer temperatures average 8 to 12 degrees lower than the city, and some even require a quilt at night. Let’s skip the usual routes and I’ll share my ultimate cool-down list with you. 01 Karamay | Xinjiang Devil City sounds like Flaming Mountain, but the wind here is so strong it feels like it cuts through you. I went in at 3 PM. The shadows of the yardang hills stretched long, and the wind howled through the pockmarked rock walls, making it feel much cooler than downtown. Don’t foolishly bake under the midday sun; dusk is the best time to visit. The light turns the hills golden red, and the cool breeze makes you not want to leave. The green onion dome of Saint Sophia Cathedral stands out against the blue sky and white clouds, especially photogenic after 5 PM when the light softens—every photo looks like a postcard. Volga Manor is worth half a day. Russian wooden houses, birch forests, and the Ash River surround you.
