Planning a trip to the Maldives can feel overwhelming at first. Most travel guides focus on luxury resorts, making it seem like that's the only way to experience this tropical paradise. However, what worked best for me was combining two local islands with a short resort stay at the end. This gave me the perfect balance of authentic island life, beautiful beaches, exciting activities, and the iconic luxury Maldives experience—without spending the entire trip moving between islands or following a hectic schedule. Leg 1: Dhiffushi (2 days) Dhiffushi was our first stop, and getting there from the airport was straightforward: a shared speedboat transfer, taking roughly 40–45 minutes. What worked: Booking the speedboat in advance through the guesthouse rather than trying to arrange it on arrival. Speedboats to Dhiffushi only run a handful of times a day, so if your flight lands outside the boat schedule, you may end up waiting in Malé for several hours. It's also worth carrying enough cash before you arrive as there were no ATM. What we did: Our first afternoon was spent just walking around the island. it's small enough to see most of it on foot, and that slow pace was the point. The next morning we went snorkeling and ended up swimming alongside turtles, which was a highlight of the whole trip. At sunset, a boat trip took us out to watch dolphins, which is a regular evening activity from the island. Two days here was the right amount of time. By the end of day two we'd genuinely seen and done what there was to see at an easy pace. Leg 2: Maafushi (3 days) There's no direct boat between Dhiffushi and Maafushi. Both are local islands in different parts of the same general area, but inter-island routes generally connect through Malé rather than going island to island directly. So this leg meant a speedboat or ferry back to Malé, then a separate onward transfer to Maafushi. What worked: Treating this as a half-day "travel day" rather than trying to schedule any activities around it. It's not a hard transfer, but it's two separate legs, not one, so building in a buffer mattered more than I expected. What we did: We kept the first day in Maafushi low-key on purpose. just settling in and chilling after the travel day, with no activities booked. The next day was the opposite: parasailing, kayaking, and jet skiing, plus a sunset kayaking session that was easily one of the best parts of the stay. Maafushi has by far the most activity operators of the three islands, and prices here are noticeably cheaper than booking the same things through a resort. Worth noting: alcohol isn't sold on the island itself, since it's a local island a "booze boat" anchored offshore is the workaround if you want a drink. Leg 3: Bandos (2 days) There's no direct transfer from Maafushi to a resort island like Bandos. Resorts run their own private speedboats from the airport, not from other local islands, so the only way to connect the two is to first get back to the airport and then take Bandos own transfer from there. What worked: Contacting Bandos in advance to confirm transfer timing from the airport, then booking the Maafushi-to-airport leg with enough of a gap in between, rather than assuming we could just hop straight across. From the airport, Bandos itself is one of the closest resorts to reach, at around 15–20 minutes by speedboat. What we did: After three fairly active days, Bandos was purely about doing nothing - no booked activities, just relaxing on the beach and enjoying the house reef right off the shore. After the pace of Maafushi, two slow days here felt like exactly the right close to the trip. Why this order worked Going quiet-to-lively-to-resort worked well as a pace, not just a budget decision. With the opening of local islands to tourists, a vacation in the Maldives has become accessible to everyone. A local island is an island inhabited by locals, with hotels built for tourists. Typically, tourists are assigned one bikini beach, which, from experience, is the best on the island. Bikinis are prohibited on other beaches, as the Maldives is a Muslim country. 🌊 I stayed on the local island of Dhigurah at the Ithaa Dhigurah Hotel. It's a cozy little hotel with excellent cuisine; the chef surprised me with his exquisite desserts every day. HOTEL PROS: ✔️The hotel itself offers diving and snorkeling (you can swim with stingrays, nurse sharks, turtles, manta rays, and reef sharks—all in their natural habitat). ✔️The hotel owner takes you on excursions on his speedboat and also takes photos and videos with a drone during the excursions. This is a huge plus, allowing you to simply relax and not worry about anything; everything has already been taken care of. ✔️A wonderful end to the vacation was a dinner on the ocean shore, on the sandbar of Dhigurah Island. The hotel owner also took photos and videos with a drone during dinner. ✔️My vacation on the island coincided with the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha. A concert was organized for local residents, and tourists were also allowed to attend and even actively participate in the traditional dances. There was also an effigy burning on the ocean shore—I've never seen such an event among Muslims before. ‼️What to keep in mind if you're planning a vacation in the Maldives: 📍When choosing a local island for your vacation, make sure it can be reached by public ferry or speedboat, as this is the most affordable transfer (a seaplane can cost $300 per person). Some hotels offer transfer services; you can find out in advance whether your chosen hotel offers this option and how much it will cost. 📍Don't forget motion sickness pills (many people get seasick on speedboats). 📍Don't forget sunscreen with at least 50 SPF, as the sun in the Maldives is very strong. If you forgot to bring any from home, you can buy more on site. 📍Bring feminine hygiene products from home, or buy them at the airport—they're not sold in stores on the island. 📍Bringing alcohol into the country is prohibited. We chose the Maldives for our honeymoon. It was our first time going to the Maldives, and after a long time of researching islands, we finally chose Raffles. The main reasons were: · Top-notch snorkeling island · Small island with few people, only 38 rooms in total, rooms spaced apart, 100% privacy 💯 · Large rooms: 200 sqm for beach villas, 230 sqm for water villas, with 3-meter-wide beds · Water villas have pools and net beds · High cost performance, includes dolphin cruise and a series of honeymoon perks · We liked the Raffles brand, though this changed after rebranding When we learned about the rebranding, we were actually sad and considered switching resorts, but the hardware at Raffles was just too excellent, and the service team remained the same, so we decided to stay. The experience was amazing!! The hardware was exactly as we expected, no difference. We could feel the entire service team working hard to provide us with comprehensive care. The food was also very good; each meal lasted 2 hours and we were always very full. We got addicted to snorkeling and went into the water 5 times in total. We were prepared to just relax, but the actual itinerary was very rich, and they gave us many extras: dolphin cruise, 45-minute massage, guided snorkeling, floating breakfast, afternoon tea, as well as champagne and bubble bath. Let me emphasize the service: from room allocation to our departure from Malé, one big takeaway is that you have to talk a lot to get an extraordinary experience. · We emailed in advance requesting a beach villa with a large beach and a water villa far from the jetty with good privacy. The beach villa we got was almost on the widest beach on the sunrise side, and the water villa was the outermost one. The adjacent two-bedroom villa was blocked during our stay, so we had absolute privacy (though it was a bit far…) · We were probably the most talkative guests on the island, so our butler could hear our needs from various staff, for example: 🐢 On our first guided snorkeling, we didn’t see any turtles. At dinner, when the butler manager came around chatting with each table, we mentioned that we hadn’t seen any turtles. He told us to just tell the butler “I want to see turtles!” Later, when the butler picked us up, he said he had heard about our wish to see turtles and took us snorkeling the next day. He was amazing, seemed to know exactly where each turtle was active. We saw three or four turtles in a row! What shocked me most was that the turtles stayed right under us and didn’t hurry away, showing how well the hotel protects the ecosystem. The turtles there are not afraid of people at all. 🎁 On the last day, while wandering on the island, we met a staff member whom we didn’t even know. We chatted and said we were leaving and that we had some time at Malé airport in the evening and wanted to go to the city to buy souvenirs. He immediately said to leave it to them! So when we arrived in Malé that evening, hotel staff took care of our luggage and arranged a guide to take us shopping for souvenirs, accompanying us to each store, and finally sent us back to the airport! I can say this trip gave us the best service experience ever. This is what making money is for, it’s so hard to quit. We just got back and are already thinking about going again.

A large and roomy vessel with tidy, spacious cabins. Thankfully, our tour had some vacancies, allowing ample space for the dive team. The onboard crew was exceptionally friendly and accommodating. The food was absolutely mouthwatering, and the drink prices were reasonable. In terms of diving, this was the top liveaboard I've ever experienced. The tour spanned from the Deep South to Male. Everything was flawless, from the morning dive briefings to the dive guides joining the dives. I can fully recommend this liveaboard. Many thanks again to the dive guides and crews of both boats.
