The snow-capped peak framed by grasslands and Tibetan villages looks like a painting, and every snapshot is wallpaper-worthy. 2. Sister Lakes: On the road from Litang to Mangkam, two azure lakes nestle at the foot of the snow mountains, serene and sacred. Stopping to feel the breeze is truly healing. 3. Dongda Mountain + Seventy-Two Bends: Iconic sections of the Sichuan-Tibet Highway. The high-altitude sea of clouds at Dongda Mountain and the thrilling switchbacks of the Seventy-Two Bends maximize the excitement of self-driving. 4. Ranwu Lake + Lhag Glacier: The lake’s water is as blue as a gem, surrounded by snow mountains and glaciers. Driving along the lakeshore feels like entering a fairy tale world. 5. Namcha Barwa Peak: On the way from Lulang to Nyingchi, this is known as "China’s most beautiful snow mountain." Seeing its full view is definitely the luckiest moment of the trip. 6. Nyingchi Peach Blossom Valley: From March to April, peach blossoms bloom wildly at the foot of the snow mountains, allowing you to enjoy peach blossoms and snow mountains at the same time. 🚗 Self-Driving Tips ▫️ Some road sections are complex; it’s recommended to drive a rugged off-road vehicle and prepare snow chains and a spare tire. ▫️ Be mindful of altitude sickness in high-altitude areas; bring oxygen tanks and common medications in advance. ▫️ Supply points are far apart along the way; keep your fuel tank above half and carry some snacks and water with you.

Mangkam Songtsen Rumai Resort is located in Mangkam County, Qamdo City, Tibet Autonomous Region. The guest rooms are very large and comfortable, the public areas are also much larger, and most importantly, the surrounding environment is very good, facing the Lancang River. The price-performance ratio for a house price of around 1,000 is still acceptable. If I have the chance, I will still deliberately stay here. However, if the housing prices soar like a runaway horse in the future, I will definitely pass by it. After all, this is all there is to see here. In addition, the size of the public area is relative. If the hotel is fully occupied, the experience will be greatly reduced. After all, although it is priced at a 5-star hotel, the actual public area cannot be compared with that of a chain 5-star hotel. #ChinaTravel #Lancang River #Riverview #Tibet #Chamdo #Hotel #Cost-EffectiveHotel #HotelIntroduction #HotelRecommendation #HotelExperienceOfficer #HotelAccommodation

Travels on the Yunnan Border | Mangkang Yanjing Tsakalho, a thousand-year-old salt field legacy along the Lancang River🧂 Traveling through the Hengduan canyons at the Yunnan-Tibet border, following National Highway 214 over layers of mountains, when the roaring Lancang River comes into view, an ancient salt field suspended on the cliff quietly spreads between the river valleys. This is Mangkang Yanjing, called Tsakalho in Tibetan, which translates to "the place where salt is produced," and is an unmissable living cultural treasure on the Ancient Tea Horse Road. Dating back over 1,300 years to the Tang Dynasty, this canyon began its history of salt drying. Over a thousand years have passed, and while the outside world has changed, the salt fields on both banks of the Lancang River still adhere to ancient methods, passing down traditional salt-making techniques from generation to generation. The well-salt drying technique has also been included in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List. Thousands of salt fields are built on the red cliffs, supported by wooden frames. Looking from afar, they are layered like a giant chessboard hanging in the canyon, interwoven with the surging river water and steep mountain walls to form a unique plateau landscape. The most remarkable aspect is the natural miracle of "one river, two salts." On the same Lancang River, the east and west banks produce completely different salt products. The salt fields in Jiada Village on the west bank are stained by the iron-rich soil of the river valley, producing "peach blossom salt" with a faint rosy color. Every year from March to May, peach blossoms bloom all over the mountains, which happens to be the best season for salt drying, and the salt grains have a pink luster, hence the name. This red salt is rich in minerals, and locals often use it to feed livestock, pickle ingredients, or boil water for foot baths. The salt fields on the east bank produce pure and transparent white salt, with fewer impurities in the brine and rare production, which is the edible salt used by locals for making butter tea and daily cooking. Walking deep into the salt fields, you can understand the hard work behind this craft. The salt workers who have lived here for generations are mostly women. Before dawn, they have to go down the steep stone steps to the salt brine wells by the river, using wooden buckets to draw the high-concentration brine gushing from the ground. Carrying the heavy brine up the cliff, they pour it into the salt fields, and then leave it to the scorching plateau sun and the dry valley winds. Without complex equipment, relying only on sunlight to evaporate the water, thick salt crystals will condense in the salt fields after a few days. Walking under the wooden frames of the salt fields, looking up, you can see salt pillars hanging from the wooden beams like stalactite crystals, crystal clear, as if breaking into a secret realm built of natural salt crystals; the visual experience is truly breathtaking. Yanjing is not just scenery, but a living scene of multi-ethnic integration and symbiosis. Located at the junction of Yunnan and Tibet, the Naxi and Tibetan people have lived side by side for generations, and different folk beliefs coexist harmoniously here. On the ancient Tea Horse Road, salt was a precious hard currency. In ancient times, salt was even as expensive as gold. Horse caravans traveled here, exchanging salt for grain and goods. The salt fields are the best witness to the prosperous past of this ancient road. Today, local families still guard the salt fields passed down from their ancestors, continuing to dry salt while welcoming travelers from afar. When visiting Yanjing, in addition to immersing yourself in the whole process of salt drying, you can also walk into the surrounding villages to feel the vibrant local life in the canyon. You might as well sit down and taste a bowl of authentic Jiajia noodles, experience the fun way of eating one noodle per bite, and taste the local homemade wine. You can also buy some handmade salt as a travel souvenir and take away this gift from the thousand-year-old canyon. There is no need to rush when you come here; it is best to set aside half a day. By evening, the sunset dyes the Lancang River golden red, and the afterglow covers the entire salt field, with each salt board reflecting fragmented light. The river flows endlessly, and the salt fields stand quietly. The lifestyle of a thousand years ago is still vividly staged before your eyes. Today, when ancient techniques are only kept in museums in many places, the salt fields of Mangkang Tsakalho are still writing a long story belonging to the Hengduan Mountains between the wind and the sun. On the journey between Yunnan and Tibet, after seeing the snow-capped mountains and lakes, you must come to Yanjing for a walk. It does not have the ultimate magnificent natural scenery, but it uses living intangible cultural heritage to let every visitor understand the wisdom of the coexistence of mountains, rivers, and people, and understand the profound history precipitated by the Ancient Tea Horse Road.

Heading west along the Yunnan-Tibet Highway, When I left Dali, the city was filled with ginkgo trees. After crossing Baima Snow Mountain, I encountered Kawagarbo. It was Meili Snow Mountain that answered for me—the moment the clouds parted, the pyramid-shaped main peak stood between heaven and earth, with millions of years of snow just waiting for you to look up. It was Yamdrok Lake that answered for me—crossing the Gangbala Pass, that expanse of blue suddenly struck my eyes, a color not found on earth. As the wind blew, my heart felt both empty and full. It was the mountain pass I traveled through at night that answered for me—the plateau at the Yunnan-Tibet border was covered in a thin layer of snow. Headlights cut through the twilight; the road ahead was unknown, but every turn was worth it. It was the river in the canyon that answered for me—from the Lancang River to the Parlung Tsangpo, autumn colors blanketed the mountains and clear water surged. It turns out that vitality has a sound. It was also the road leading to the stupa that answered for me—crepuscular rays fell on the spire, and at that moment, I suddenly understood: entering Tibet is nothing more than a pilgrimage to return oneself to the mountains and waters. 🏔️ Dali—Lijiang—Shangri-La—Meili—Yanjing—Zuogong—Ranwu—Nyingchi—Lhasa, 2,000 km along the Yunnan-Tibet Highway, Your body is in hell, but your eyes are in heaven. -

Everyone online is hyping Tibet's autumn scenery as legendary. As someone who just finished the autumn–winter Tibet route, I'll share some blunt truths no one dares to say. Tibet is beautiful year‑round, but Oct–Nov really isn't suitable for ordinary travelers to rush in. I'm not trying to put you off — I genuinely want to help you avoid pitfalls. Read this before deciding whether to come. ❌ why it's not recommended to visit Tibet in Oct–Nov 🌡️ severe temperature swings, newcomers can't cope During these two months, diurnal temperature differences in Tibet can exceed 20°C. Sunny, warm days mean a sweatshirt or shirt is comfortable, but after sunset temperatures plummet below 0°C. High‑altitude areas such as Namtso, Everest, and Ngari commonly drop to below -10°C at night. Many visitors pack only autumn clothes, end up too cold to go out and sleep poorly, and poor sleep worsens altitude sickness, making the whole trip miserable. 🚗 dangerous road conditions, self‑driving is high risk and roads may close From mid to late Oct, high‑altitude passes in Tibetan areas (Zheduo, Kazila, Dongda) often see snow and ice. Autumn and winter weather is changeable; sudden heavy snow is common, causing anything from traffic jams to complete road closures. Mountain roads are winding and steep, and icy surfaces are extremely slippery. Self‑driving is not recommended for inexperienced drivers. If you get stuck at a high pass, the combination of cold and low oxygen greatly increases the risk of altitude sickness and hypothermia, and rescue is very difficult. The Medog section has frequent snow and rockfall in autumn and winter, and viewing spots hide hazards, so don't go there recklessly. 🏞️ major attractions lose much of their appeal Many people come for Tibet's stunning lakes and panoramic snowy peaks, but Oct–Nov can be disappointing: ▫️ Namcha Barwa: autumn and winter are often cloudy and foggy, so it's rare to see the full sunlit peak ▫️ Basum Tso and Lulang forest: vegetation turns yellow, no green remains, scenery becomes monotonous and bleak ▫️ Ngari and Lake Manasarovar: biting cold winds whip the lake surface, making the visit unpleasant 😵 altitude sickness risk doubles, and conditions feel worse than peak season Many think fewer people in autumn and winter means better oxygen, but actually the opposite is true. With vegetation dying back, the air's oxygen feels lower than in summer, and the air is dry and piercing. Combined with large day–night temperature swings and cold nights that disrupt sleep, younger travelers can experience altitude sickness more often than in summer. You may feel fine during the day but suffer headaches, chest tightness, and insomnia at night, which seriously affects the whole trip. 🏨 reduced services, recreation suffers Oct–Nov is Tibet's low season. Many guesthouses, specialty restaurants, and niche attractions close. Commercial streets are quiet, and many popular food spots and activities are suspended. Remote scenic areas lack supplies and have poor logistics, so you won't get the all‑in one convenience of peak season. ✅ honestly: Oct–Nov in Tibet is only suitable for these people 1. travelers with multiple Tibet trips and full acclimatization who can tolerate altitude and cold 2. those traveling off‑peak who only want a quiet stay in Lhasa and to stroll the old town without long drives 3. photographers aiming to capture winter snow mountains and the pure snowy landscape ❌ not suitable: first‑time visitors, elderly or young children, people with weak health, or ordinary travelers wanting to do a full loop itinerary 💡 survival tips for visiting Tibet in Oct–Nov (must read) 👔 clothing suggestions Don't rely on ordinary autumn clothes. Use three layers: summer + autumn + winter A quick‑dry base layer + thick sweatshirt + long windproof down jacket, fleece pants, snow boots, scarf, hat, and gloves are all essential. Windproofing and warmth are top priorities around lakes and mountain passes. 🚘 travel suggestions ▫️ inexperienced drivers should skip self‑driving and prioritize licensed car hire or small guided groups for safer, more familiar road conditions ▫️ check road conditions in real time each morning and avoid passes with snowfall ▫️ never drive at night; temperatures drop very quickly after dark in Tibetan autumn and winter, making night driving highly dangerous 🏔️ sights to keep or skip (avoid list) ✅ worth visiting: central Lhasa, Yamdrok Lake, central Shigatse, and short, easy hikes ❌ skip wasting time on: the Ngari loop, Medog, overnight at Namtso, or making a special trip just to check Namcha Barwa off the list 💤 altitude sickness & accommodation tips ▫️ on arrival do not shower or do strenuous exercise; rest early and take it easy ▫️ don't stay at Everest base camp — the altitude is too high and increases the risk of severe altitude sickness. Choose a lower village or a hotel with supplemental oxygen for safety and comfort ▫️ drink plenty of warm water, bring lip balm and moisturizer to ease the extreme dryness 📝 final heartfelt summary Tibet's beauty is undeniable — sacred, healing, and soul‑cleansing. But Tibet in Oct–Nov is beautiful and harsh. Without complete preparation and sufficient endurance, I really don't recommend going blindly. If you want an easy vacation and to check off scenic spots, choose June–September. If you prefer quiet, secluded snowy landscapes, make thorough preparations before setting off for Tibet.

Before setting off, I happened to watch a documentary about the When I reached Mangkang, I just had to see the salt fields for myself. It's a manual salt-making technique that has continued for thousands of years in Tibet. The runs through, with salt fields on both sides. Two ethnic groups, the Naxi and the Tibetan, harvest salt on the east and west banks respectively. I visited the Tibetan salt fields on the west bank. A villager guided me inside, explaining the history of the salt fields. - The thing is... I didn't take the same route back. I walked a short stretch of dirt road with no guardrails, with the Lancang River right below. I missed the the only Catholic church in Tibet. I didn't get to taste the served one bowl at a time. If I have the chance to drive here again, I'll definitely go back.

The most breathtaking highlight of Meili Snow Mountain is undoubtedly the "Golden Mountain under the Sunshine." At dawn, as the first glimmer of light touches the horizon, the distant peaks remain cloaked in a soft blue-gray hue. As the sun ascends, the first rays gently graze the summit of Mount Kawagarbo, transforming the pristine white peaks into shimmering gold, then a vibrant orange-red. The golden glow spreads across the ridges, and the "Thirteen Peaks" reveal themselves one by one in the morning light. In that instant, the snow-capped mountains seem to come alive—solemn, majestic, and divine. 📸 Travel Tips: Feilai Temple is the classic vantage point for the full panorama and the sunrise glow; Wunongding offers a wide view of the entire range. We recommend staying overnight nearby and heading to the viewpoint early. Keep in mind that witnessing the "Golden Mountain" is subject to weather and cloud conditions. 🙏 Kawagarbo: A Faith Enshrined in Snow To the local Tibetan people, Kawagarbo is far more than just a summit; it is a sacred deity. Every year, pilgrims arrive for the kora (circumambulation), their footsteps a testament to their devotion. Prayer flags flutter in the breeze, Mani stones stand in silent vigil, and the snow peaks watch over them from afar. To this day, Mount Kawagarbo remains unclimbed. In 1991, a joint Chinese-Japanese expedition was struck by an avalanche, claiming the lives of 17 climbers. In 1996, the local government officially banned all climbing attempts on the peak. In the eyes of the faithful, the mountain's sanctity far outweighs the human desire to conquer it. 🏔️ Standing before these mountains, one feels not just the grandeur of nature, but a profound reverence for life, nature, and faith itself. 🧂 Yanjing Ancient Salt Fields: A Millennium of Salt Heritage by the Lancang River Continuing north from Meili Snow Mountain along the Yunnan-Tibet Highway into Mangkang, Tibet, you will find the Yanjing Ancient Salt Fields—a stop well worth your time. While it lacks the dramatic peaks of Meili, it offers the deep-cut gorges of the Lancang River, tiered ancient salt pans, and a salt-making tradition spanning over 1,300 years. Here, natural landscapes and human history intertwine to reveal a different facet of Tibetan beauty. With a history exceeding 1,300 years, the Yanjing Ancient Salt Fields are a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit, and the traditional salt-making process is recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage. What makes this place unique is that the salt fields aren't on flat ground. Instead, they are built into the riverbanks, slopes, and cliffs of the Lancang River gorge. Thousands of wooden-stilted salt pans are tiered together, resembling cliffside rice terraces or a giant geometric masterpiece painted by nature. Remarkably, the two sides of the Lancang River produce salt of different colors: 🤍 White Salt: Pure, white, and crystalline. 🩷 Peach Blossom Salt: A delicate red or pink hue with a warm, unique texture. The variation stems from differences in the local soil and environmental conditions. Salt workers draw brine from wells and channel it into the pans, where the highland sun and wind evaporate the water, leaving behind salt crystals. Historically, salt was a vital commodity. Yanjing’s salt sustained locals and fueled trade across the region. Caravans traversed these rugged canyons, moving tea, salt, and supplies along ancient trade routes, fostering cultural exchange between diverse ethnic groups. Although industrial production has transformed modern life, Yanjing preserves its traditional methods. Standing beside these fields and watching villagers work as their ancestors did, you realize this isn't just a static historical site—it is a living, breathing way of life.

Although the property isn't huge, the service and environment are absolutely incredible! ✨ We were gifted Songtsam's signature cloth shoes and afternoon tea as soon as we checked in 🍵 The highland barley cookies were so delicious 😋 I couldn't stop eating them. There's also a Songtsam souvenir shop in the hotel lobby 🛍️ It's full of fun Tibetan-style trinkets—I couldn't help but buy a bunch! The Tibetan staff were incredibly welcoming and warm 🔥 They proactively helped with our luggage and even washed our car (yes, you read that right! Our dusty car from the G318 highway was taken care of perfectly). 📍Location: Zhuka Village, Rumei Town, Markam Situated by the Lancang River at a relatively low altitude, it's the perfect place to rest during your G318 trip 🏔️ Open the window to see terraced fields, ancient bunker ruins, and magnificent river views 🌊 Sitting in the wooden lobby during the day, basking in the sun while sipping butter tea, felt so healing 🥹 It truly is the warmest stop along the G318 highway~ If you're passing by, don't miss it!

📍Transportation & Location: Friends driving the 318/Yunnan-Tibet Highway, I highly recommend stopping for a night in Rumei Town, Markam! The hotel is right in Rumei Town, with a relatively low altitude (about 2,600 meters), making it perfect for a rest stop before entering Tibet. For those driving, parking is convenient, and you don't have to squeeze into Markam County. It's truly a hidden gem. 🛏️Room Experience: I was blown away the moment I opened the door! The space is super spacious with all-solid-wood Tibetan-style decor, and the woody scent is instantly relaxing. The room has not only a large bed but also a huge tatami tea area and a sofa area. My favorite part is that big window—outside are the desolate, hot-dry valley and mountains, while inside are warm yellow lights, crisp white soft bedding, an exquisite copper basin sink, and a huge bathtub. Taking a hot bath at night to wash away the fatigue of the day is incredibly healing! ✨Hygiene Details: Songtsam's hygiene is always reassuring. The wooden floor is spotless even when walking barefoot, and the linens are white, fluffy, and odorless. The bathroom has great dry/wet separation, and even the corners and crevices are clean. It's really not easy to have such exquisite hygiene standards in a high-altitude area. 💁‍♂️Service Attitude: The butler-style service is very thoughtful! Someone helped with luggage as soon as I arrived (a lifesaver at high altitude), the front desk staff had a warm smile, and check-in was fast. The food in the restaurant was also to my taste. Drinking hot tea in the public area at night while watching the starry sky outside felt as comforting as being home. 💡Honest Summary: I thought it would just be an ordinary stopover before I came, but it turned out to be the highlight of this Sichuan-Tibet Highway trip. Whether it's the reading and rest area in the public space or the viewing tea table in the room, it exudes a "slow down" Zen vibe. Absolutely great value for money, and I will definitely come back next time I travel the Yunnan-Tibet Highway!

The altitude rises gradually along the way, allowing your body to adapt slowly and reducing the risk of altitude sickness. Gradual progression is the way to go! 🚗 Driving tips: · We recommend using an SUV, as some sections have many curves. Be sure to check your vehicle's condition before departing. · Pack warm clothing, sunscreen, and oxygen canisters (the temperature at the mountain passes is quite low—don't ask me how I know 😭). · There are plenty of places to stay along the way. Feilai Temple, Ranwu Lake, and Bomi all have hotels, so you can rest in stages without having to rush. 🙏 Friendly reminder: Please respect local Tibetan customs and do not step on prayer flags. Compared to the Sichuan-Tibet Southern Route, this route has a richer cultural atmosphere and is perfect for travelers who want to slowly experience the magnificent scenery of the Hengduan Mountains. While the weather is nice, grab your camera and set off! 📷

I totally get it! When I previously went to Meili to see the golden sunrise on the peaks, I was so crowded at the Feilai Temple viewpoint that I couldn't even lift my phone. Drones were buzzing overhead, and the experience was ruined. That was until a local driver recommended this hidden gem tucked away along the G214 National Highway—the Water Tank Viewpoint. I fell in love after just one visit! There are no commercial stalls here, no long lines of tourists—just fluttering prayer flags, a view that encompasses the entire Lancang River Grand Canyon, and the Meili Thirteen Peaks lined up right in front of you. The best part is that it's completely free, and parking is easy for both sedans and SUVs. It’s truly a paradise for introverts and photographers. Standing on the viewpoint, you have the rushing Lancang River at your feet and the 6,740-meter-high Kawagarbo main peak right in front of you. That sense of depth—with the river below and the sacred mountain ahead—offers more layers than viewing the snow-capped mountains up close at Feilai Temple. When the light softens around 3:00 or 4:00 PM, clouds drift slowly over the peaks, occasionally parting to let the sunset glow hit the snowy summits. While it doesn't quite compare to the morning golden sunrise, that touch of gold is enough to keep you excited for hours. 💡 A few practical tips: 1. Search for "Meili Snow Mountain Water Tank Viewpoint" directly in your navigation app. It's on the right side if you're coming from Shangri-La, so don't drive past it. 2. The wind is really strong! Make sure to bring a windbreaker, hat, and gloves. The wind chill makes it feel at least 5 degrees colder than the actual temperature. 3. There are no shops around, so remember to bring your own hot water and snacks. Last time, I ate a flower cake with hot water while sitting in the wind watching the snow mountain—it was pure happiness. 4. If you want to see the golden sunrise, you need to wake up early and arrive half an hour before sunrise. However, there are even fewer people here in the morning, so you don't have to fight for a spot. If you're tired of the crowds at trendy viewpoints, why not come to the Water Tank to sit, feel the breeze, and gaze at the snow-capped mountains? Don't think about anything—just spend some quiet time with the sacred mountain. That sense of peace is more healing than anything else.

✨The section of G318 from Markam to Zogang is definitely a highlight of your Sichuan-Tibet road trip that you cannot miss. Cross 3 sacred mountains and 1 major river in a single day. The entire route is filled with breathtaking scenery that will get your blood pumping🔥 [Lawu Mountain Pass] 📍Elevation 4,376m. In Tibetan, it means "the mountain at the feet of the gods." 🏔️The first high-altitude pass on the G318 entering Tibet. 🌈The summit features a spectacular array of colorful prayer flags. 🌉The watershed between the Jinsha River and the Lancang River. 360° panoramic views of the confluence of the two rivers. Every photo you take looks like a masterpiece📸 [Zhuka Lancang River Bridge] 🚗A stunning viewpoint in Rumei Town. 🌉"A bridge spanning north and south, turning a natural barrier into a thoroughfare." Cliffs and the rushing Lancang River. A paradise for photography enthusiasts. We recommend stopping for 15 minutes to snap some photos🤳 [Jueba Mountain] Formerly known as "Jiaoba Mountain," this is the most dangerous section of the Sichuan-Tibet route. 🏞️20km of winding mountain roads with a 2,000m elevation drop. A new tunnel opened on June 30, 2024, allowing passage in 10 minutes (the old road took 1 hour). [Dongda Mountain] ☁️"Gateway to the Clouds" at an elevation of 5,130m! The highest pass on the G318 Southern Route. Snow all year round❄️ A straight road to the sky. A paradise for snow mountain lovers! We recommend bringing an oxygen tank to prevent altitude sickness‼️ 💡Tips: 1. The total distance is about 260km; we recommend allocating 1 day. 2. Be sure to take precautions against altitude sickness at Dongda Mountain. 3. There are few supply points along the way, so stock up on dry food. 4. Clothing recommendation: windbreaker + sunglasses. This mysterious highland secret is waiting for you to explore🚙

Driving the 214 from Yunnan into Tibet, you reach Quzika after crossing Hongla Mountain. I originally planned to push straight through to Markam County, but a friend convinced me to stop here for the night—it turned out to be the most comfortable night of the entire Yunnan-Tibet route. Yunqu Manor Hotel🍷 📍Location: Quzika Township, Markam County, Qamdo, Tibet. Located off National Highway 214. 🏔️Altitude: 2,200 meters!! With a dry, hot valley climate, you won't have to worry about altitude sickness on your first night in Tibet. 🔥Why do I highly recommend it? 1. Altitude-friendly, zero pressure for your first night in Tibet😌 An altitude of 2,200 meters is basically "plain-level" treatment in the Tibetan region. Just coming up from Yunnan, your body is still adjusting. Staying here is much more comfortable than going straight to Markam County at 3,800 meters. You need a good night's sleep to have the energy to cross the mountains later. 2. Natural hot springs to melt away fatigue♨️ The hotel features Quzika's natural hot springs, with dozens of indoor and outdoor pools spread along the valley. After a day of driving on winding mountain roads, soaking your sore legs in the hot springs at night wipes away all your fatigue—it works better than any massage. 3. Unique highland red wine🍷 Affiliated with the Quzika 1865 Winery, you can taste organic highland wine right in the lobby. After soaking in the hot springs, take a glass of red wine back to your room and enjoy a light buzz in the Tibetan valley. You really won't find this experience anywhere else. 4. Lancang River Canyon views from your window🌊 Backed by Dameiyong Snow Mountain and facing the great bend of the Lancang River. Wake up to the birds in the canyon in the morning, and when you open the window, the clouds and mist are slowly rising from the river—it's worth the price of the room alone. 📌Practical tips · Self-driving: About 2.5 hours from Feilai Temple, with good road conditions. · Suitable for: A first stop for rest on the Yunnan-Tibet route, self-driving enthusiasts, and those worried about altitude sickness. · Must-do experiences: Night soak in the hot springs + wine tasting at the winery + canyon morning mist. · Dining: The hotel has a restaurant that serves both Tibetan and Sichuan cuisine, so you don't need to worry about meals. For friends traveling the Yunnan-Tibet route, don't push yourself to reach Markam County on the first night. Stop in Quzika and soak in the hot springs—this is the right way to start a comfortable trip to Tibet🌙

In early August 2026, I traveled to Tibet with my family via the Yunnan-Tibet Highway. There were 4 of us, and the total cost was about CNY 320 per person. We focused on the niche, authentic experience of Markam Yanjing, avoiding rushed itineraries and tourist traps, and immersing ourselves in the primitive charm of the 1,300-year-old ancient salt fields along the Lancang River. This entire guide is based on my personal experience, packed with practical tips, and perfect for beginners to follow directly. Detailed itinerary [Yanjing Ancient Salt Fields, Jiada Village, Naxi Ethnic Township, Markam County, Qamdo City, Tibet] 9:00 AM–12:00 PM Transportation: If driving, take the G214 National Highway north from Deqin, Yunnan, for about 2–3 hours. Set your navigation to "Markam Yanjing Ancient Salt Fields." If not driving, you can take a van from Markam County to Yanjing Township for about CNY 30–40 per person; the trip takes 2 hours. Admission ticket: CNY 90/person. It may be free during the off-season; please check the official attraction channels for the latest information on the day of your visit. Purchase tickets through official channels. Activities: August is when the Lancang River has the most water, creating a powerful, muddy yellow torrent that contrasts sharply with the red and white salt fields on both banks. The morning light from the east is perfect for photographing the panoramic view of the salt fields on the west bank. You can watch up close as salt workers extract brine from the wells, channel it into the fields, and dry it naturally—this is the only living heritage site in the world that preserves the original manual salt-making technique. The east bank produces red salt, and the west bank produces white salt; it is worth observing the difference in color across the same river. Tips: August is the rainy season, and thunderstorms are common in the mountains in the afternoon, so it is recommended to arrive as early as possible in the morning. Plan for 2–3 hours. The salt field area has slippery, rocky ground, so be sure to wear non-slip, flat shoes. The altitude of Yanjing is about 2,300–2,500 meters; you generally won't experience significant altitude sickness, but you should still avoid strenuous running or jumping. [Yanjing Catholic Church, Shangyanjing Village, Naxi Ethnic Township, Markam County, Qamdo City, Tibet] 2:00 PM–3:30 PM Transportation: It is about a 10-minute drive from Jiada Village. The church is located right next to the G214 National Highway; set your navigation to "Yanjing Catholic Church" to go directly there. Activities: This is the only Catholic church in Tibet, founded by French missionaries in 1865, with a history of over 160 years. The church architecture blends Tibetan and Western styles, and the interior is quiet and solemn. Residents of Shangyanjing Village are mostly Catholic, while those in Xiayanjing Village are mostly Tibetan Buddhist. The cultural phenomenon of two faiths coexisting across a single gully is very unique. A 40-minute visit is sufficient. Tips: Please keep quiet inside the church and respect local religious customs. In August, the afternoon light is from the west, making it slightly backlit for photos of the church facade. It is recommended to visit here in the morning on your way, and return to the salt fields in the afternoon for more photos. [Lancang River Salt Field Trail, Naxi Ethnic Township, Markam County, Qamdo City, Tibet] 5:30 PM–7:00 PM Highlights: In the evening, the light turns into a soft golden hue, making it the best time to photograph the "palette" effect of the salt fields. Stroll slowly along the dirt road by the Lancang River, with ocher-red sandy soil underfoot and layers of wooden salt racks in the distance, while the river breeze carries a faint salty scent. It is not too sunny in the evening, making it comfortable for walking slowly with children. Tips: Some sections of the trail have no railings. If you have children with you, be sure to hold their hands and stay away from the steep slopes by the river. Return to your accommodation before dark; there are no streetlights in the mountains at night, so night travel is not recommended. Local food recommendations 1. [Yanjing Jiajia Noodles] Full address: "Guolacong Tibetan Homestay," next to the Yunnan-Tibet Highway, Naxi Ethnic Township, Markam County, Qamdo City, Tibet. Average cost: CNY 25–35/person. Must-order signature dish: Jiajia noodles (served with Tibetan pig bone broth, cold dishes, and highland barley wine). Real review: Each bowl of noodles contains only five or six strands, made with alkaline water from oak tree ash, making them chewy and springy. The broth is simmered for over 12 hours with Tibetan pig bones and Yanjing well salt, resulting in a rich, savory flavor. The way to eat them is to use stones to keep count, and the server keeps adding noodles; the record is 147 bowls. It is a great experience for children and suitable for all ages. Pitfall: The noodle soup is a bit salty; if you prefer a lighter taste, you can ask the restaurant to use less salt in advance. 2. [Butter tea with tsampa] Full address: Available at all Tibetan restaurants in Yanjing Town, or at small street-side eateries in Naxi Ethnic Township. Average cost: CNY 15–20/person. Must-order signature dishes: Butter tea, tsampa. Real review: The butter tea made with local Yanjing white salt has a savory, fragrant taste with a hint of sweetness in the aftertaste, a completely different flavor from the iodized salt in supermarkets. Eating tsampa with butter tea by kneading it into balls is very filling, perfect for a snack before heading out in the morning. It is well-suited for the rainy season in August—the hot tea warms you up, and it is very cost-effective. Practical travel guide Transportation guide: The entire route follows the official G214 National Highway, and driving is the preferred method. It takes about 2–3 hours to reach Yanjing from Deqin, and about 2–3 hours from Batang via G318 and then G214. There are vans from Markam County to Yanjing Township for about CNY 30–40/person, but the schedule is not fixed, so it is recommended to ask about departure times in advance. Avoid all unlicensed vehicles and private charters. Accommodation recommendations: It is recommended to stay in the Jiada Village area of Naxi Ethnic Township, within walking distance of the salt field attraction. Lazangkang Yanjing Homestay is located in Jiada Village, just 583 meters from the salt field attraction; the owner provides explanations of the attraction, and the rooms are clean and cost-effective. Ca'yu Homestay is about a 100-meter walk from the salt field attraction; it is at a low altitude and suitable for families. Real pitfall avoidance guide: August is the peak of the rainy season in Qamdo, and the probability of rockfalls and landslides along the G318/G214 sections in Markam increases significantly. Be sure to check the road conditions for the day before departure and leave flexible time. There may be locals setting up booths at the entrance of the Yanjing attraction to collect fees; be sure to purchase tickets through official attraction channels and look for the authorized ticket office. Do not buy overpriced salt products at the entrance of the attraction; if you need to buy salt, you can buy it directly from the salt workers in the village. Avoid weekends and holiday peaks; the experience is more relaxed on weekdays. Essential items: In August, the temperature in Yanjing is about 5–22°C, with a large temperature difference between day and night. Essential items include a thin down jacket or fleece jacket, sunscreen, sunglasses, lip balm, non-slip flat shoes, a power bank, and a portable water bottle. During the rainy season, it is recommended to bring a lightweight raincoat, which is more practical than an umbrella. This trip to Yanjing in early August was relaxing and healing, with a slow pace, niche and uncrowded spots, delicious food without pitfalls, and great value for money. It is very suitable for families and self-driving tourists on the Yunnan-Tibet Highway as a first stop in Tibet. This guide is based on real-world experience and packed with practical tips; beginners can follow it directly to easily enjoy Markam Yanjing.

Customer service representative, Ms. Wan Hua, also deserves praise; she meticulously answered all my concerns before departure and responded quickly and effectively to any issues that arose during the trip. The entire trip was purely sightseeing with no shopping stops. Driving the 318 is a must-do in my lifetime; I sincerely recommend it—it was definitely worth the trip. Changdu is beautiful, but I don't recommend visiting in October–November to suffer. Just finished a 4-day trip to Changdu, let me give you the honest truth🍂! The autumn scenery in Changdu is truly stunning, but coming in October–November means enduring low temperatures and long, tiring journeys, which many people find difficult. However, if you prefer quiet mountains and want to avoid the crowds, you can save this practical guide. 🌤 Local climate In October–November, daytime temperatures in Changdu are around 7–16°C. It's sunny, and the forests in the river valleys are slowly turning golden. However, the temperature difference between day and night is extreme; it drops below freezing at night, and the mountain winds are biting. The air is dry, UV rays are strong, and mountain weather is changeable, with occasional scattered light rain and rapid temperature drops. 📅 4-day itinerary Day 1: Arrive in downtown Changdu and acclimate to the altitude first🏔. No high-intensity attractions planned. In the afternoon, visit the Changdu Museum to learn about Khampa culture. In the evening, take a walk along the Lancang River, watch the river flow through the canyon, and get some rest early to conserve energy. Day 2: Day trip to Zizhu Temple. This is a must-visit hidden gem in Changdu, built suspended on a red cliff, with the autumn mountains showing layers of changing colors. There are many winding mountain roads and the drive is long, so be sure to allow plenty of time. It's freezing cold on the mountain, so don't stay too long for photos. Day 3: Qiangba Temple + Karuo Ruins. In the morning, visit Qiangba Temple; the red walls of the ancient temple paired with the autumn forest create a great atmosphere. In the afternoon, head to the Karuo Ruins to experience the ancient prehistoric civilization. The autumn colors in the valleys along the way are beautiful and perfect for photos. Day 4: A short, leisurely trip toward Markam to see the colorful forests in the river valley, then a slow journey back. Enjoy the autumn scenery on both sides of the Lancang River along the way, pick out some local specialties from shops you like, and conclude your trip. 🧳 Travel tips 1. Changdu has a high altitude and many mountain roads, making altitude sickness likely. Avoid running or jumping, and have glucose, moisturizing lip balm, and face cream ready. 2. There are many winding roads in the mountains, so drive carefully and slowly if you are self-driving. If hiring a car, prioritize drivers who are familiar with local road conditions. 3. Dress modestly when visiting temples; do not expose your shoulders or knees. Do not take photos of monks without permission. 4. Carry a thick jacket, hat, and gloves with you. Mountain weather changes quickly, so even if it's sunny, be prepared with rain gear. 🏨 Accommodation guide Prioritize staying in downtown Changdu, where dining options and pharmacies are readily available, and most rooms have oxygen supply, making it suitable for those new to the plateau. Try to avoid small inns in the mountains, as water and electricity can be unstable in autumn and winter. Accommodation near Zizhu Temple is basic, so staying overnight is not recommended; a day trip is suggested. There are many hotel options in the city; if your budget allows, choose a room with floor heating, which will be much more comfortable for keeping warm at night. 💛 Summary Why do I say I don't recommend visiting Changdu in October–November to suffer? Because the mountain roads are long and the temperatures are low, making the journey truly tiring. But looking at it from another angle, there are very few tourists this season, no crowds, and you get mountains full of colorful forests and cliffside ancient temples—it's quiet and magnificent. If you don't mind long journeys, can tolerate low temperatures, and are willing to calm your mind and experience the autumn of the Khampa region, then Changdu will definitely surprise you. For those who are afraid of the cold or long car rides, I suggest visiting in a different season.
