2026 Matara Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in August)

Sri Lanka gives you so much in one trip — beaches, trains, tea fields, wildlife, hiking, seafood and those chaotic little travel moments that become your favourite memories 😄 This is Part 1 of my 15-day Sri Lanka itinerary, covering Colombo, Galle, Hiriketiya, Ella, the famous scenic train and a hike through tea country. Day 1: Colombo → Galle Land in Colombo, grab a tuktuk and head straight to Colombo Fort Railway Station. Quick tip: Ask your driver to pass Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque on the way — it’s one of Colombo’s most eye-catching buildings and perfect for quick photos 📸 Then skip the taxi and take the coastal train to Galle instead. It’s only about two hours, but you’ll get sea views, local life and a much better first taste of Sri Lanka. Arrive in Galle, check in, and spend the evening wandering the beautiful streets of Galle Fort. Day 2: Galle → Jungle Beach → Hiriketiya Start with a tuktuk to the Japanese Peace Pagoda, then head down to Jungle Beach for a refreshing swim. After that, go to Galle Central Bus Stand and catch a bus towards Hiriketiya. You’ll probably need to change buses, but don’t panic — just tell the driver where you’re going and they’ll point you in the right direction. Then settle in for three dreamy nights in Hiriketiya 🏝️ Think: surfing, beach cafés, seafood, scooter rides and slow mornings. Days 3–4: Hiriketiya Beach Days This is your time to relax properly. Surf, swim, rent a scooter, explore nearby beaches and eat as much fresh seafood as possible 🐟 Food tip: Along the coast, always ask what was caught that morning. Some of the best meals are the simplest ones! And yes — pack extra sunscreen. You’ll need it 😅 Day 5: Hiriketiya → Yala Route → Ella Take an early shuttle towards Ella via Yala National Park. This travel day comes with a bonus: you might spot elephants, sloth bears or even a leopard along the way! 🤞 Arrive in Ella and settle into the mountains for two nights. Tip: If you use a good private driver, save their number. Trust me — it can come in very handy later. Day 6: Ella Magic Ella is all about fresh air, mountain views and slow adventure. Visit a tea plantation, chase waterfalls, take a Sri Lankan cooking class, or hike Little Adam’s Peak. Important tip: Once you arrive in Ella, head to the train station and book your ticket for the scenic train towards Nuwara Eliya or Kandy 🚂 This is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic journeys! Day 7: Ella → Tea Country Catch the morning train from Ella, usually around 10:00. This route is famous for a reason — tea plantations, misty hills, bridges, villages and endless green views. If you enjoy hiking, get off near Nuwara Eliya and arrange a taxi to Norwood for a night in tea country. Stay tip: Traveller’s Villa is a great option if you’re planning to hike Stage 8 of the Pekoe Trail. The owner is an avid hiker and can help with drop-off and pick-up. Day 8: Pekoe Trail → Kitulgala → Kandy Start early and hike Stage 8 of the Pekoe Trail before the midday heat kicks in. The hike takes around 4–6 hours depending on your pace, and it’s a great way to see Sri Lanka beyond the usual tourist stops. Afterwards, head towards Kandy. Feeling adventurous? Add a whitewater rafting stop in Kitulgala on the way! It only takes about 1.5 hours and turns a transfer day into a proper adventure day 🌊 You’ll arrive in Kandy tired, but very happy! End of Part 1 That’s the first half of the route: coast, surf, seafood, mountains, trains and tea country. Our Sri Lanka journey was a mix of serene beaches, wild safaris, and misty mountains – with a few lessons along the way. Where We Went (about 3 weeks) · Negombo was our arrival point. The city itself was pleasant, but the sea disappointed us: murky water and not inviting for swimming. A convenient start, but not a place to linger. · Hikkaduwa – a big step up. Calm, shallow waters, perfect for wading. We visited a turtle hatchery (a genuine conservation project) where we saw tiny hatchlings and learned about their protection. A heartwarming stop. · Hiriketiya – our absolute favorite. This horseshoe bay stole our hearts: crystal‑clear turquoise water, soft sand, and a laid‑back surfer vibe. The little beachfront restaurants served incredible Sri Lankan seafood. From here, we took a whale watching trip. Honestly, luck wasn’t on our side – one whale surfaced far in the distance, and I barely caught a glimpse. So if you’re dreaming of those epic breaching shots you see online, manage expectations. 😅 It’s nature, after all. · Yala National Park – a thrilling safari at dawn. While seeing elephants up close was memorable, I left with mixed feelings: some interactions felt more like spectacle than sanctuary. I’m no expert, but the atmosphere made me question the ethics. Research before you go. Highlights & Tips · Best beach: Hiriketiya – swim, surf, eat, repeat. · Turtle hatchery: Choose a genuine conservation one (ours was in Hikkaduwa). · Safari: Start early (5 AM) to beat the heat and spot wildlife. · Elephant nursery: Read recent reviews and consider alternatives like Udawalawe if you prefer a more ethical experience. I recently had the pleasure of spending four days exploring the stunning beaches of Matara and Weligama in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. I must say, the experience was nothing short of magical. One of the highlights of my trip was the incredible food. The local cuisine in Matara and Weligama is simply perfect. You can rent a motorboat that will take you through the entire lake while witnessing several species of birds and wildlife in general. The Parawi Duwa Temple is a Buddhist Temple, situated on a beautiful small island close to Matara beach. Surrounded by the Indian ocean, it is accessible by a steel bridge. It is a beautiful and calm place, which you should not miss, when you visit Matara.

I actually feel quite emotional writing this because staying at this retreat was such a magical experience for me. If you’re going to Sri Lanka and looking for a place to wind down, Hiriketiya was it for me 🩵 A small crescent bay wrapped in palm trees, warm turquoise water, surfers catching some waves, and just enough beach cafés to keep it lively without losing its charm. We swam, enjoyed some beach club with friends, enjoyed a lovely brunch and let the hours stretch out without looking at the time. Later, we walked over to Dickwella for sunset 🥰 to see the fisherman in the wide horizon, glowing sky and have one last dip in the sea before the light turned golden. It’s not a hidden gem anymore, but compared to the bigger, busier towns like Mirissa, it still feels calmer… more intentional. If you’re in the south staying in Mirissa, it’s absolutely worth the one-hour drive for the day. But if you can, stay the night. Walking into the restaurant, I was greeted by the warm smile of the owner, Nuwan. A quick chat revealed his deep passion for Chinese cuisine. To ensure authentic flavors, he even hired a chef from China. That certainly put my mind at ease! 🦀 A Feast for the Taste Buds|Must-Try Signature Dishes The menu is packed with Sichuan-style seafood and homestyle dishes, each one tempting enough to make your mouth water. Based on customer reviews and my own experience, these dishes are absolute must-tries: · Garlic Vermicelli Steamed Lobster: This is the star of the menu! The lobster meat is sweet, tender, and bouncy, while the vermicelli underneath soaks up the garlicky essence and lobster juices. One bite, and it's pure heaven.
