We boarded the Waverley again yesterday for the fourth consecutive year, this time opting for the Minehead trip. It began with a coach ride from Clevedon to the West Somerset heritage railway after watching the Waverley set sail from Clevedon. Upon arriving at the railway, we enjoyed a one-and-a-half-hour train journey through the countryside to Minehead, followed by four hours of free time. We then boarded the Waverley for an evening cruise back up the Bristol Channel to Clevedon, which was as delightful as ever. The crew, from the Purser to the bar staff and ship crew, was friendly and helpful. The ship offers plenty of space, with seating both indoors and outdoors, a cafe restaurant, and a bar area. Guests can also stroll around the ship, enjoy the view under the funnels, or take a look at the engine room. There’s even a small gift shop for picking up souvenirs. We’re already looking forward to our next trip on the Waverley!

When it comes to UK beaches, many people immediately think of Brighton, but I personally prefer Minehead Beach in Somerset. This spot serves as the gateway to Exmoor National Park and is also one of the starting points for the South West Coast Path. Compared to popular bustling coastal cities, Minehead is much less commercialized and offers a profound sense of tranquility. The beach is incredibly vast; at low tide, a massive stretch of wet sand is exposed, perfectly reflecting the sky like a mesmerizing mirror. My favorite thing to do is take a stroll along the sand dunes, gazing out at the ocean while admiring the rows of quaint white cottages in the distance. The scenery is incredibly soothing. If you're into hiking, you can head straight into Exmoor National Park right from here, taking in the coastline, rolling meadows, and hillsides all at once. It's the perfect destination for a laid-back day trip. As evening approaches, the sun slowly dips below the horizon, transforming the sky from a brilliant blue to fiery hues of orange and red. Accompanied by the soothing sound of crashing waves and the gentle sea breeze, the atmosphere is truly healing. I'd take this peaceful vibe over a crowded tourist trap any day. 📍 Travel Tips · I recommend setting aside half a day to a full day for a leisurely walk along the coast. · The scenery is most spectacular an hour before sunset—perfect for photography. · You can easily hop onto the South West Coast Path while you're here; the coastal views are absolutely breathtaking. · If you're driving, there's plenty of parking nearby; if you're taking public transit, you can catch a train to Taunton and then transfer to a bus. Minehead might not be the most famous beach in the UK, but if you're looking to escape the crowds and experience the most natural British coastal scenery, it is absolutely worth a visit.

Friendly for the entire family with plenty of places to eat at affordable prices. The entertainment section was great, for the first day. The rest of the week was just a repeat of the previous day, so could do with some switching up there. Arcades are as fun as always, and my son enjoyed his first experience of such a busy and hectic free for all. If you could use a break from the hussle and bussle of the park life, there is plenty to see outside of the centre park. Head 5 minutes out due North of the park and you hit the beach. The beach is spotless and a great free day out. The best part is the indoor swimming pool. Try to avoid bank holidays and summer breaks since you'll be limited to 1.5hrs (which isn't enough if you want to ride the slides). We went every day and introduced our son to his first swimming lesson there. 🏖️Facilities: Plenty of food and drink places, arcades, theatre halls, outdoor parks, indoor soft play, laser tag, 2-seater gokart style bikes, pool hall, bowling (the list is endless). 💰Average Price per Person: tickets vary depending on the time, but spending money, you are looking at around £30pp per day if you eat at a restaurant every day + some time in the arcades. (Theatres and shows are all free, but you will need to download their app to book your place for some shows as there is limited space).

West Somerset Railway Longest independent railway in Britain (20 miles). Enjoy a relaxing trip back to the great days of steam. A trip down memory lane to relive an experience which our forebears took many years ago. My grandfather worked on the railway. He worked in the signal box pulling the levers for the Great Western Railway and in 1968 I was only a toddler when the last of these fine machines were taken out of active service. A great day out for all the family.
