Tested in August for summer escape, these 6 cool places are not crowded or expensive
01 Mudanjiang | Heilongjiang
Come here in August, it's around 20 degrees Celsius during the day, and you'll need a light jacket at night. Jingpo Lake is the highlight. In the morning, take a boat tour of the lake; the mist on your face is cooler than an air-conditioned room. At noon, have a cold-water fish meal by the lake, about 50-60 yuan per person. Don't order too much, as Northeastern dishes are generous. In the afternoon, visit Diaoshuilou Waterfall. The water flow is strong, and the mist can wet your hair if you stand on the viewing platform, so remember to put your phone in a waterproof bag. In the evening, take a stroll along the Mudanjiang River; the river breeze will completely dissipate the summer heat. An alternative for high temperatures is Beishan Park in the city, which has dense shade. If you get tired, you can just sit on a bench and relax.
02 Zhanjiang | Guangdong
Don't treat Zhanjiang as an ordinary coastal city; it's an underrated summer escape. Huguangyan Scenic Area is a volcanic lake, with water so clear you can see the bottom. A walk around the lake takes about 2 hours, with shade all the way, so you won't get dizzy from the sun. In the afternoon, visit the Maar Lake Volcano Museum by the lake; it's air-conditioned, perfect for escaping the hottest part of the day. In the evening, head back to the city and enjoy the sea breeze at Jinshawan Coastal Promenade. The sunset here is much quieter than in Sanya. You must eat seafood. Go to Xiashan Seafood Market in the evening to pick your own; oysters are 2 yuan each, and processing fees are not expensive.
⚠️ Apply plenty of sunscreen; the coastal UV rays are no joke.
03 Ningbo | Zhejiang
In Ningbo's summer, the fun places are hidden in its culture and landscapes. In the morning, go to Tianyi Pavilion · Yuehu Lake. The garden has many old trees, and the stone paths are cool. If you get tired, find a pavilion by Yuehu Lake and sit for a while, watching locals play chess. Don't eat too much for lunch; save some room for Chenghuang Temple Snack Street. You can buy tangyuan, youzanzi, and roasted rice cakes without disappointment. In the afternoon, head to Xikou Tengtou Tourist Area. Visit the former residence of Chiang Kai-shek and the Republic of China-style street together. The buildings are cool, so you won't get tired walking slowly. If you still have energy, go to Qiantong Ancient Town in the evening. The bluestone paths, after being exposed to the sun all day, are still warm to the touch, but the cross breeze in the alleys is very comfortable.
🚄 There's a direct bus from Ningbo city to Xikou, taking about 40 minutes.
04 Songyuan | Jilin
Chagan Lake in summer is much quieter than in winter. Jinchan Island is a small island in the center of the lake. It only takes about 10 minutes by boat to get there. The island is windy, so the perceived temperature is several degrees lower than in the city, making it suitable for bringing elderly people and children to enjoy the breeze. In the afternoon, cycle around the lake. Bike rental is 20 yuan per hour. There's a dedicated cycling path along the lake, with reeds on both sides, and you might occasionally see water birds flying. Stay at a lakeside guesthouse in the evening. The owner will recommend a whole fish feast; a table for 5-6 people can be had for 300 yuan, and the taste is much better than chain restaurants in the city.
⚠️ Mosquitoes are fierce by the lake; mosquito repellent is a must. Don't ask me how I know.
05 Ma'anshan | Anhui
Ma'anshan is a summer retreat occupied by Nanjing residents, but it's still worth a special trip. The Yangtze River Caishiji Cultural Ecological Tourist Area is the core. In the morning, climb Cuiluo Mountain. The steps are not steep, and you can reach the top in about 40 minutes. From the summit, you can see the Yangtze River bending, with an open view and winds strong enough to blow your hat off. After descending, visit Taibai Tower, which is cool inside and also features an exhibition on Li Bai's life. For lunch, have a bowl of Dangtu Big Meat Noodles at a farmhouse restaurant at the entrance of the scenic area, 15 yuan a bowl. The meat is tender, and the broth is rich. In the afternoon, walk along the riverside boardwalk. The river breeze carries moisture, making it more comfortable than an air-conditioned room. This place is suitable for a leisurely stroll, not for rushing. It's best to allow half a day.
06 Weinan | Shaanxi
If climbing Mount Hua in August, be sure to start early. Begin climbing at 6 AM when the foot of the mountain is still cool. By the time you reach the North Peak, the sun will be out, and the sea of clouds will be surging, making it worth the price. At noon, have a bowl of instant noodles at a supply point on the mountain, 15 yuan. It's a bit expensive, but the hot soup is comforting. In the afternoon, walk the Plank Road in the Sky. If you're timid, it's best to skip it and not force yourself; there's an alternative route.
⚠️ The West Peak cable car stops operating at 4:30 PM. Plan your descent time carefully, or you'll have to spend the night on the mountain. If you don't want to climb the mountain, Yuquan Temple at the foot of Mount Hua is free to enter. With ancient trees reaching the sky, sitting in the courtyard and listening to cicadas is also very cool.
07 Ordos | Inner Mongolia
Xiangshawan in summer is truly hot, but it's also truly fun. Enter the scenic area at 8 AM and go camel riding first. The wind in the desert is hot, but the camels walk slowly, and the swaying motion can be a bit hypnotic. At noon, hide in the Lotus Hotel in the desert. It's air-conditioned, and a buffet lunch costs 150 yuan per person, which is the most cost-effective option in the scenic area. In the afternoon, go sand sliding. Sliding down from a height, your ears will be filled with the roaring sound of sand friction, exciting enough to make you scream. In the evening, head to Genghis Khan Mausoleum Tourist Area. The grassland is windy, and at sunset, golden light covers the grass, making it solemn and beautiful.
⚠️ Sunglasses and a face towel are essential in the desert, or the wind will fill your mouth with sand.
08 Garzê | Sichuan
Garzê in August is Sichuan's last cool corner. Xinduqiao is a photographer's paradise. The morning mist and evening golden light are worth waiting for, but the most comfortable thing is to find a Tibetan tea house in town at noon, drink a pot of butter tea, and watch yaks slowly cross the road outside the window. Mugecuo is an alpine lake, and the water is so blue it looks fake. A walk around the lake takes 2 hours. The altitude is 3,000 meters, so you might get out of breath if you walk fast, but it's fine if you slow down. Daocheng Yading is the highlight, but finishing it in one day is too rushed. It's recommended to stay in Shangri-La Town at the entrance of the scenic area and enter the mountain early the next morning. See Milk Lake and Five-Color Lake together. If you don't have enough stamina, just take the short route; Pearl Lake is also very beautiful. Hailuogou Glacier Trail is the ultimate summer escape. It's hot at the foot of the mountain, but taking the cable car up to Camp 4, the temperature drops directly to around 10 degrees Celsius. Remember to bring a windbreaker.
⚠️ The entire Garzê prefecture is at a high altitude. Don't shower or drink alcohol on the first day; adapt slowly.
