Navarre travel guide and discussion

Crossing the Ebro River from the Basque Country leads directly into Rioja, Spain’s oldest and most prestigious wine-producing region. Known for its prestigious DOC (Denominación de Origen Calificada) status, the landscape here is defined by rolling hills, ancient stone towns, and world-class estates. 🍇 Exclusive Terroirs and Tasting Situated right on the riverbank, Finca Valpiedra offers a perfect introduction to Rioja Alta. The estate holds the rare Vino de Pago status — the highest tier in Spanish wine classification. The rocky, limestone-rich soil here gives the local Tempranillo a distinct, complex minerality. A standard tasting experience costs an incredibly reasonable €20, including a tour of the grounds, two premium wine pours, and local sausages. 🏛️ Architectural Contrasts For fans of modern architecture, the nearby Marqués de Riscal winery is a must-see. Designed by Frank Gehry (the same architect behind the Guggenheim in Bilbao), its futuristic pink and gold titanium ribbons create a stunning contrast against the traditional vines. 🏰 The Underground City of Laguardia Just a short drive away sits Laguardia, a breathtaking 10th-century medieval fortress town. Shielded from harsh winds by the Cantabrian Mountains, its narrow streets are completely pedestrianized. Interestingly, underneath the stone pavements lie over 200 ancient family wine cellars! Walking the quiet streets reveals fascinating details, like traditional Basque crosses (lauburu) on the wooden doors and a beautiful iron sculpture dedicated to travelers hidden in the gardens of the Santa María de los Reyes church. 🏔️ Panoramic Views Before leaving the region, driving up the winding mountain roads to the Puerto de Herrera observation deck (at an elevation of 1,100 meters) provides a spectacular, sweeping view of the entire Ebro Valley. #spain #travel2026 #travel #couplestrip #thingstodo #myitinerary #citydaytours #localfood #西班牙 #西班牙旅行 #rioja #spanisharchitecture #wine #spanishwine #winery

If you think Pamplona is only about San Fermín and the running of the bulls? 🐂 Think again. Behind one of Spain's most famous festivals is a city with Roman origins, medieval neighbourhoods, Renaissance fortifications, a fascinating linguistic heritage and one of Europe's most important pilgrimage routes. 1️⃣ PAMPLONA IS OVER 2,000 YEARS OLD The city was founded as Pompaelo, traditionally associated with the Roman general Pompey, around the 1st century BC. 2️⃣ IT WASN'T ALWAYS ONE CITY Medieval Pamplona was divided into three different burgos: Navarrería, San Cernin and San Nicolás. They had their own identities, rivalries and fortifications before eventually being united. 3️⃣ THE CITY HAS A STAR-SHAPED FORTRESS The Citadel is one of Spain's great examples of Renaissance military architecture. Its five-pointed design was created to defend the city against artillery attacks. 4️⃣ SAN FERMÍN IS MORE THAN THE BULLS The famous festival combines religious traditions, music, parades and centuries-old celebrations. The running of the bulls is only one part of a much larger celebration. 5️⃣ THE ENCIERRO IS ONLY 875 METRES The famous route through the city is approximately 875 metres long — but it has become one of Spain's most internationally recognized traditions. 6️⃣ ESTAFETA IS NOT THE WHOLE ROUTE The famous Calle Estafeta is perhaps the best-known section, but the route begins at Santo Domingo and passes through several streets before reaching the bullring. 7️⃣ PAMPLONA IS ON THE CAMINO DE SANTIAGO Pilgrims arriving from the Pyrenees pass through Pamplona on the French Way, making the city an important stop on one of Europe's most famous pilgrimage routes. 8️⃣ THE CATHEDRAL HAS TWO FACES The exterior is largely Neoclassical, while much of the interior is Gothic. The contrast is one of the city's most interesting architectural details. 9️⃣ ROMAN PAMPLONA IS STILL UNDER YOUR FEET Archaeological discoveries have revealed remains of the ancient Roman settlement beneath the modern city, connecting today's Pamplona with its origins as Pompaelo. 🔟 THERE ARE TWO LANGUAGES IN THE CITY'S HISTORY Pamplona sits in Navarre, a territory with a long history of both Spanish and Basque linguistic presence. You may therefore see the city's name written as Pamplona in Spanish and Iruña in Basque. Even the name tells you something about the cultural history of this part of northern Spain. AND ONE LAST FACT... Pamplona brings together Roman history, medieval kingdoms, Renaissance fortifications, Basque and Spanish cultural heritage, pilgrimage and one of Spain's most famous festivals in a remarkably compact city. So yes, come for San Fermín. But stay long enough to discover Pamplona beyond the bulls. #pamplona #Iruña #sanfermin

If you are looking for good news, I’ll give you a head start: you don’t need a car to explore Pamplona. Since the historic center is compact, it is very easy to get around on foot and is filled with spots that tell the story of the city. If you only have one full day at your disposal, this would be my route. 09. 30 — THE CITADEL Start your morning by touring one of Spain's finest examples of Renaissance military architecture. Afterward, continue through Vuelta del Castillo, the large green space that surrounds the fortress. 10. 30 — LA TACONERA Head toward La Taconera, one of Pamplona's most beautiful historic parks. From here, you can enter the Old Town directly by crossing through the ancient fortifications. 11. 00 — THE OLD TOWN Now it’s time to discover the heart of Pamplona. Walk down Calle Mayor and wander into the streets that formerly belonged to the city's various medieval boroughs. 11. 30 — CHURCH OF SAN SATURNINO Continue to San Saturnino, one of the most significant historic churches in the Old Town. Its location also serves as a reminder that you are walking along one of the historic routes of the Camino de Santiago. 12. 00 — TOWN HALL SQUARE An essential stop. This is where the famous Chupinazo rocket is launched every July 6th to kick off the San Fermín festival 🐮 Even outside of the festival dates, the square is worth a visit for its architecture and atmosphere. 12. 30 — THE RUNNING OF THE BULLS ROUTE Now, follow the route of one of the world's most famous bull runs on foot: 1️⃣ Santo Domingo 2️⃣ Town Hall 3️⃣ Mercaderes 4️⃣ Estafeta 5️⃣ Telefónica 6️⃣ Bullring Walking it when there are no bulls allows you to truly appreciate how narrow some of the streets are and better understand the unique nature of this tradition. 13. 30 — PLAZA DEL CASTILLO Time to take a break. Grab a seat on a terrace, have a coffee, or simply watch the city go by. 14. 00 — PINTXOS ROUTE This is where one of the best parts of the day begins 😅 Instead of a long, sit-down meal, take the opportunity to visit several bars in the Old Town and try different pintxos. A bite here, another there, a glass of wine... and then keep discovering Pamplona. 16. 00 — THE CATHEDRAL After lunch, continue to the Cathedral of Santa María la Real. Its Neoclassical exterior contrasts with a primarily Gothic interior, creating one of the city's most interesting architectural juxtapositions. Remember that the main mass takes place on Sundays (free entry); the rest of the week, the entrance fee is 5 euros. 17. 00 — THE CITY WALLS Finish the historical portion of the day by walking along Pamplona's walls. From the elevated sections, you will also get great views of the city and the surrounding landscape. 18. 30 — THE ARGA RIVER If you still have energy, head away from the center and end your day by the Arga River. It’s a completely different side of Pamplona: greener, quieter, and more local. 20:00 — BACK TO THE OLD TOWN Return to the center for dinner or to continue the pintxos route. After a day of walking through Pamplona, few things finish the day better than good food, wine, and the atmosphere of the historic quarter. The best part of all: you can do practically the entire thing on foot.

#easytravelpost The Nacedero del Urederra is a 6 km round-trip boardwalk in the Urbasa–Andía Natural Park, capped at 500 visitors/day, free entry but mandatory online reservation via Navarra tourism portal (book 2 weeks ahead for summer weekends), parking at Baquedano 5 EUR/car. I drove Pamplona→Baquedano (1 hr), showed the phone reservation at the barrier, started 08:00. The lane follows the Urederra ("beautiful water") through beech shade, then cliff-side boardwalks where the turquoise pools sit under a 30 m limestone wall—moss and maidenhair on the spray side, forbidden to swim (fines are real). The "nacedero" itself (the spring source) is closed, but the upper river section ends at a cliff where water pours straight out of the rock. I hit the first turquoise pool at 08:40 alone; by 10:00 the morning slot filled. Mistake: I drove into Baquedano village centre and stalled on the narrow lane—park at the signed Aparcamiento de Baquedano, walk in. Another: I wore smooth-soled sneakers and slipped on the wet boardwalk roots; grippy shoes. Would you book the 08:00 Nacedero slot and add the Urbasa plateau viewpoint after, or skip the reservation hassle and walk the free Sendero de Morterutxo near the visitor centre?

2️⃣🏜️Bardenas Reales — The Dothraki Sea 🌊 ❓🎞️What was filmed here and how it looked on the show. Bardenas Reales served as the backdrop for the Dothraki steppes: endless expanses, rolling dust, and horizons stretching to the edge of the frame. There were barely any large-scale sets built here—just props (tents, campfires) and extras. The heavy lifting was done during post-production: armies, smoke, and motion effects were added to create that sense of "infinity." Drones were used for some scenes to capture sweeping aerial shots over the plateau, and these very frames became some of the most iconic in the series. ✨✨✨"They filmed 'endless steppes' here ✨✨✨—but in reality, it's just a few square kilometers that cinematic magic stretched to cover all of Westeros." 💥Historical and geological formation of the location. Bardenas Reales is the result of millennia of erosion: wind and water have carved out the soft clays and sandstones, leaving behind bizarre hills, canyons, and plateaus. The landscape is in a constant state of flux—some formations disappear over decades, while new ones emerge. During the Middle Ages, these lands were used as pastures, and in the 20th century, the military used it as a training ground (thanks to its "Martian" terrain). In 1999, the area was designated a natural park, and in 2000, it became a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. ⚡️"This isn't a movie set or a barren desert—it's a living, shifting land sculpted by nature over millions of years." ☝️Practical tips for travelers and photographers. Where: Navarre, Bardenas Reales Natural Park. How to get there: The easiest way is by car from Tudela or Tafalla (30–45 minutes). There are several official entrances and routes; some of the roads are unpaved. Time to allocate: A minimum of 3–4 hours to drive between different spots and hike the shorter trails. When to shoot: At sunrise and sunset—the light is warm, the shadows are long, and the textures of the clay and stone are at their most expressive. Angles: Minimalism works best—a single silhouette against the horizon; close-ups of the rugged terrain; sweeping tracking shots (if you're shooting video or a timelapse). Important notes: The area is completely exposed with almost no shade, so water, a hat, and sunscreen are absolute musts; some routes are closed to cars and are exclusively for hiking or cycling; always check the latest park regulations before your trip.

Spent some time in Zaragoza recently. If you are passing through, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar at Plaza del Pilar is the main landmark you can't miss. Here is the straightforward breakdown of what you need to know before going, so you don't waste your time: · *1. Timing (Crucial)** Unlike many Asian attractions that stay open all day, they still observe afternoon breaks here. · Weekdays: 07:30 - 13:30, then reopen 16:30 - 20:15 · Saturday: 07:30 - 13:30, 16:30 - 21:30 · Sunday: 07:30 - 13:30, 16:30 - 20:30 · Tip: If you want to go up the tower for the view, do it early. The viewing platform closes around 17:00.* · *2. Dress Code (Very Strict)** They will stop you at the door if you are not dressed appropriately. No sleeveless tops, no short skirts or shorts, no hats, and take off your sunglasses inside. Just follow the rules to avoid hassle. · *3. What to look out for** · Inside, check out the dome frescoes painted by Goya. It's massive and the detail is impressive. Rent the audio guide; otherwise, you're just looking at old walls without context. · For the best view, walk over to the Ebro River bank (southeast corner) around 16:00. The lighting on the building against the river is great. I also managed to spot some local water birds along the river bank, which was a nice, quiet break from the crowd. · *My Verdict:** It's free entry for the main basilica area, which is excellent value. Definitely worth a 1 to 2-hour stop if you are in town. Just plan your visit around their afternoon closure.

Pilgrimage Along the Spanish Atlantic Coast – Basque Region If you find yourself in Balmaseda, you must walk across it. Undoubtedly, this is one of the most iconic medieval landmarks in the beautiful town of Balmaseda. Its unique defensive tower highlights its significance in the trade route connecting Castile and the coast. The old town, once a Jewish quarter, boasts elegant historic architecture that is well worth a visit. In addition to fascinating museums, there are numerous restaurants where you can enjoy delicious cuisine. The entire Las Encartaciones (Enkarterri) region is dotted with towers and historical sites.

When I was planning my trip to Spain, I wanted to find a quiet place to stop between Barcelona and Madrid, just to catch my breath. Zaragoza ended up being the perfect spot. The city has this really calm, gentle rhythm that I loved. My absolute favourite part was walking across the ancient Stone Bridge (Puente de Piedra) just before dusk. From there, you get this beautiful, unobstructed view of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar across the river. As a design student, I was completely mesmerized by the colourful patterns on the domes—it felt like looking at a giant, intricate painting. Afterwards, we just wandered through the narrow streets of the old town without much of a plan. It’s very walkable and didn't feel crowded at all, which was such a relief. We ended the evening at a small, quiet tavern, trying some local tapas and red wine. It’s a small place, and you really only need a day or two here, but it felt so nice to just slow down and enjoy the quiet moments.

Spanish Pyrenees Hike ~ Navarra The Church of San Salvador in Ibañeta and the Roland Monument stand out in the pastoral landscape. The church was built in the 11th century but was rebuilt in the 20th century and now has a modern chapel watching over the pilgrims coming and going. This monument was carved in memory of the Pilgrims and Roland. It was a gray slab of stone, like a stele, such as the shepherds had placed on the hills in the past. #AprilDestinations2025 #SpainTravel #Navarra

Pyrenees Adventure in Spain ~ Navarre Autonomous Community The exhibition features a vast collection of carved images, paintings, ancient handwritten and printed books, as well as a series of gold artifacts. Highlights include a Romanesque silver gospel book, a 13th-century Gothic Mudéjar gilded silver box, and the relic chest known as Charlemagne's Chess, dating back to the mid-14th century.

A journey to the Spanish Pyrenees ~ Navarre Autonomous Community On the road connecting Irurita and Ziga, there is a viewpoint worth stopping at to admire the magnificent scenery of the Baztan Valley. If you visit on a sunny afternoon, this is the ideal place to take in the entire view of the valley, including the French border in the background and the beautiful towns at the valley's base, with Elizondo as the backdrop. Across the road, there is a small parking area. Since it is not clearly marked, it might be easily overlooked.

Spanish Pyrenees Hike ~ Navarra Every two years, this village in Navarra celebrates the Mysteries of Obanos, a legend that dates back to the Middle Ages. Obanos is just 20 km from Pamplona, the capital of Navarra. This small village is located on the Santiago Pilgrimage Route. Pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela would pass through this village - it was the junction of two important routes, from Somport and Roncesvalles. It is well worth strolling through the streets and squares of Obanos. Among its many monuments, special mention should be made of the shrine of Nuestra Señora de Arnotegui, from which the legend of the mystery of Saint Gilles and Saint Felicia originates. This story is closely related to the Camino de Santiago, which is performed every two years in Obanos. #AprilDestinations2025 #SpainTravel #Navarra

Journey to the Pyrenees in Spain ~ Navarre Autonomous Community The Church of San Juan Bautista is located in the Fueros Square of Obanos. This church was built in the early 20th century on the foundation of an earlier Gothic structure, preserving the 14th-century doorway. Inside, there are several precious sculptures, such as the 13th-century "White Virgin and Child" and the 12th-century Arnótegui Virgin sculpture housed in the sacristy. Some elements were salvaged from the old building.

A journey to the Pyrenees in Spain - Navarre Autonomous Community The building, constructed between the 12th and 13th centuries, features Romanesque architecture. The church is designed in a rectangular layout with three naves, where the central nave is taller than the two on its sides. The sanctuary consists of three semicircular apses. The church has a simple pointed dome. On the exterior, the bell tower built in the 14th century is particularly striking. The structure is square-shaped with battlements at the top, giving it a military appearance.

Spanish Pyrenees Hike ~ Navarra The Church of San Francisco de Assisi is a very pretty 12th-century monastery in Plaza de los Fueros, founded by Saint Francis of Assisi in 1213 after his return from Compostela. Located in the Plaza Los Fueros in Sanguesa, the most interesting artistic elements of this monastery include its façade and Gothic cloister, its collection of funerary stelae, and several images in the church chapel. #AprilDestinations2025 #SpainTravel #Navarra

Spanish Pyrenees Hike ~ Navarra The most striking feature of the Palacio de Guevara Santoro (now the Sanguesa Cultural Center) is its beautiful 17th-century Churriguresque façade, with its ornate carved wooden cornices and various decorative details from Mexican and Peruvian colonial art. Its structure is made of ashlar stone on the ground floor and brick on the rest, with an intricately carved wooden eaves on top. It has a large door with a triangular pediment and the family crest is engraved on the door. We also find colonial elements from Mexico and Peru in this door; ornaments of mermaids, suns and pirates. Both floors have balconies with railings supported by butterfly nuts. The noble façade is topped by a profiled eave, one of the most spectacular in Navarra. We found carvings of at least 13 dogs, representing fantastic animals that capture human heads, exotic plants and fruits, and a background of Indians and grotesque figures. #AprilGoodDestinations2025

A journey to the Pyrenees in Spain ~ Navarre Autonomous Community Start your exploration of Tudela's Sephardic history at the Marquis of Valtierra Palace, where a medieval city model helps travelers orient themselves within the current city and discover traces of another Tudela. The palace also houses significant documents, such as the Jewish privilege confirmation issued during the brief reign of Francis I, marriage contracts, and meeting records of the Aljama judicial institution. Connected to the cathedral cloister, the Vetula Synagogue of Tudela is a surprising and unique site. Though converted into a small chapel, it retains distinct features from its previous use. It displays a replica of the tapestry that hung for over a century in the Chapel of Forgiveness, listing the surnames of all Jewish families who converted to Christianity in the city. Interestingly, the Spanish expression "to pull the blanket" originates from this shameful banner. Leaving the cathedral, visitors can stroll through the Vetula Jewish Quarter, wandering narrow medieval streets like Huertas Street, Verjas Street, or Benjamin of Tudela Street, eventually reaching the Jewish Square, where a bust of Benjamin himself can be seen. Finally, tourists can visit the area of the New Jewish Quarter, historically and presently protected by the castle. Streets such as Pelaores, Cortapelaires, San Miguel, and Paseo del Castillo offer numerous corners to immerse oneself in the medieval atmosphere, filled with memories.

Spanish Pyrenees Hike ~ Navarra Santiago, the capital of the Estrella region, has its origins as a Roman and Vasconian settlement, but it was King Sancho Ramírez of Navarre who founded the present city to accommodate the many pilgrims who made their way to Santiago. The fact that it was located on the Camino de Santiago and served as a royal court contributed to its economic prosperity throughout the Middle Ages. Authentic medieval streets lead us to admire jewels of Romanesque architecture. At the top of the Grand Staircase is the Cistercian Church of San Pedro de la Rua. Romanesque elements of its structure and decoration are evident in its façade and cloisters. Semicircular arches and narrative capitals with floral and figurative decoration lead to the cloister, a great place to stroll and admire the exquisite craftsmanship of the biblical scenes. Overall, the neighborhood where it is located, near San Nicolas Street and Curtidores Street, is the most beautiful and monumental in town. #AprilGoodDestinations2025

A journey to the Pyrenees in Spain ~ Navarre Autonomous Community Inside this simple church, there is an exhibition featuring paintings that depict the evolution of the Kingdom of Navarre from 925 to 1234 (faithful to history), which might surprise many visitors. It also includes the present-day province of Biscay and serves as a great example of urban history. For a decade, it has remained closed and forgotten. Located in the former Jewish quarter, it is believed that it might have originally been a synagogue. It has been mistakenly identified as a castle church; although it is connected to the walled area, it was never a castle church.

Spanish Pyrenees Hike ~ Navarra The Monastery of Santo Domingo was formerly a monastery in Estella (Navarre, Spain). It was founded in 1259 by order of King Tybalt II of Navarre and by Dominican friars. In 1839, by the Act of Confiscation, the abbey became public property. In the 1970s the Provincial Council of Navarra undertook a major restoration and, as I mentioned at the beginning, part of the monastery was turned into a sanatorium. The photo was taken from outside. The main body of the church and monastery has been preserved, both in Gothic style with a single nave. #AprilDestinations2025 #SpainTravel

A journey to the Pyrenees in Spain ~ Navarre Autonomous Community This church was initiated by Charles the Noble in 1397, built upon a 12th-century Romanesque structure, and completed in 1501. Above the high altar stands the statue of the Royal Virgin Mary, where the Kings of Navarre once swore their oaths. The current building was constructed on the ruins of the previous Romanesque church, which was destroyed in the 14th century. The cathedral is divided into three Gothic naves, showcasing several different styles. The central hall houses the tombs of Charles III the Noble and his wife, Dona Leonor. The exterior of the cathedral features Neoclassical architecture, while the interior and the 14th-century cloister are Gothic in style.
