Exploring Nikko, a World Heritage City A city boasting both breathtaking beauty and a rich cultural heritage. 🚞🚌 For this trip, we took a train from Ueno Station and got off at Tobu Nikko Station. From there, you can easily walk around and explore the city. This time, we visited the World Heritage area! 📍 Shinkyo Bridge: A sacred bridge located within the grounds of Futarasan Shrine. 📍 Futarasan Shrine (Futarasan Jinja): An ancient shrine with a history of over 1,000 years. 📍 Nikko Toshogu Shrine: Considered the absolute highlight of Nikko, registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. 📍 Taiyuin Temple: Situated just west of Nikko Toshogu Shrine. 📍 Rinnoji Temple (Rinnōji): The most important temple in Nikko.

But there's a catch: onsen have very strict rules, and if you don't know them, you could find yourself in an awkward situation (or even not be allowed in at all). Save this cheat sheet before your trip 👇 ▪️ Onsen = a hot spring with natural mineral water from underground. They are often located in incredibly beautiful places – forests, mountains, with views of a river or Mount Fuji. ▪️ You must enter a public onsen completely naked – swimsuits are prohibited. * As soon as we arrived at the station, we bought bento boxes to enjoy at the shrine. There are shops right inside the station, and we couldn't resist grabbing some delicious ice cream too! 🍦
* Shinkyo Bridge, one of Japan's top 3 most beautiful bridges. The striking red bridge paired with red and green leaves, contrasting against the river 🌁 and clear blue sky ☁️, is simply mesmerizing. You can visit for an admission fee of around 500¥. Red Bridge 🌁
* Nikko Toshogu Shrine (日光東照宮 – Nikko Toshogu) 🏯 This World Heritage architectural marvel was built as a dedicated mausoleum for Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founding shogun of the Edo period (a period that spanned over 260 years). The walk up to the shrine is a bit of a trek 🗺️, but the gorgeous views make it a breeze, and the weather was nice and cool. Once we reached a rest area, we dug into our bento boxes, which had a self-heating feature! 🍱 The food was absolutely delicious—there's nothing quite like a hot meal in chilly weather. 🤍✨

World Heritage Shrines and Temples of Nikko Shinkyo Bridge x Toshogu Shrine x Rinnoji Temple x Futarasan Shrine They're all in the same area, so you can easily explore everything on foot. You can keep the pace super chill—a day trip is absolutely perfect for this👍 ⛩️ Shinkyo Bridge This is the landmark at the entrance. You'll spot its eye-catching red color right as you arrive. Spanning the river below, it instantly shifts your vibe from "tourist mode" to feeling like you've just "entered a sacred realm." 🌿 Rinnoji Temple This is the perfect first stop. It's not too crowded, and the vibe is pretty quiet. You can take your time strolling around as a warm-up for the rest of Nikko. Just a heads-up: you'll need to buy a separate ticket if you want to go inside the main hall~ 🏯 Toshogu Shrine Definitely set aside a chunk of time for this one. The whole place is incredibly ornate and packed with details—you'll find yourself constantly stopping to take it all in. The famous Three Wise Monkeys🙉🙈🙊, the Imagined Elephants🐘, and the Sleeping Cat🐈 are all here. The architectural art is absolutely stunning. It’s the resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Keep in mind you need a separate ticket for this, and photography isn't allowed inside⚠️ ⛰ Futarasan Shrine Personally, I think this is a hidden gem. Lots of trees, fresh air, and it's nice and quiet. If Toshogu is "glamorous," then Futarasan is simply "soothing." You'll feel super relaxed walking through here. Rumor has it that the golden rabbit🐇 brings luck in love, so definitely go give it a rub~ 📍 I'm a massive "P" (super spontaneous), so this was a totally last-minute trip. Make sure to book your train tickets in advance via Tobu Railway or major booking platforms! I got there at 1:30 PM on Feb 1, 2026. The earlier you arrive, the better, as the morning sunlight is gorgeous. I highly recommend riding the newest "SPACIA X" train—sadly, I missed out on it this time around😩 I departed from Asakusa Station, and the ride took about 2 hours. Once you step out of Tobu Nikko Station, you can hop right on a bus to Shinkyo Bridge. Alternatively, you can take a 30-minute stroll and browse the local shops along the way. When you're done at Futarasan Shrine, there are buses waiting to take you straight back to Tobu Nikko Station. Not having to trek all the way back is an absolute blessing for lazy folks like me~😊
