Ostuni Cathedral combines Gothic, Romanesque and Byzantine elements, while the arched Porta San Demetrio is one of 2 remaining medieval gates. The Civic Museum and Archaeological Park houses Ostuni 1, the skeleton of a woman from Paleolithic times. Northwest of town is the Santuario di Sant’Oronzo complex, with a triumphal arch. The region around Ostuni has been inhabited since the Stone Age. The town is reputed to have been originally established by the Messapii, a pre-classic tribe, and destroyed by Hannibal during the Punic Wars. It was then re-built by the Greeks, the name Ostuni deriving from the Greek Astu néon ("new town"). Sacked after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, in 996 AD the town became part of the Norman County of Lecce .The Normans built their medieval town around the summit of the hill (229 m), with a castle (only remains can be seen) and city walls with four gates. From 1300 to 1463 it was part of the Principality of Taranto and from 1507 (together with what is now the frazione of Villanova and Grottaglie) passed to Isabella, Duchess of Bari, wife of Gian Galeazzo Sforza, Duke of Milan. Under Isabella's rule, Ostuni thrived during the Italian Renaissance. Isabella protected humanists and people of art and letters, including bishop Giovanni Bovio. There are so many beautiful towns to visit, both along the coast and inland. You can easily split the region into three different areas, and that’s a lot to cover. In one week, these are all the places I managed to visit. It’s true that some of these towns only need half a day because they’re quite small, but it really depends on how you like to travel. I naturally travel at a faster pace because I like seeing as much as I can. That said, I also think it makes perfect sense to choose fewer places and enjoy them more slowly. My main base was Polignano a Mare, but I also spent one night in Matera and one in Vieste. Matera is close enough to visit as a day trip from Bari or Polignano, but I’m so glad I stayed overnight. Sleeping in a cave hotel and waking up to the most incredible views over the Sassi was one of the highlights of the trip 🤩 Gargano was the part of the trip I really didn’t want to miss. I spent two full days there, but honestly, I could have easily stayed four or five. There’s so much to explore, from the beaches and sea caves to the different towns and the national park. The next time I’m in Puglia, I’d love to explore the south around Lecce. I enjoyed this region so much that I already know I’ll be back one day.
