Here’s the schedule I followed for my one-day Hiroshima adventure! 🚄 Around 9 AM: Arrive at Hiroshima Station! 🚃 Take the JR train to Miyajimaguchi! ⛴️ Board the ferry to Miyajima! ⛩️ Spend 2–3 hours enjoying Miyajima! First, visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Itsukushima Shrine. Then, stroll through the shopping street and savor momiji manju (maple leaf-shaped sweets)! The ice cream sandwich and fried momiji manju are absolutely delicious! Here’s a recommendation: try the momiji manju hand-baking experience! Reservations are required! 💰 Price per person: 880 yen ⚠️ Starting July 1, the price will increase to 1,000 yen. 📍 Location: Yamadaya Miyajima Main Store The experience is not only fun, but the freshly made momiji manju you bake yourself is amazing! You’ll also receive a souvenir of Kirioka sweets, which I personally preferred over momiji manju. The Simose Art Museum features eight colorful "movable exhibition rooms" floating on a water basin. Designed by architect Shigeru Ban and inspired by the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, the building redefines the museum space with a completely unique approach: the exhibition rooms actually move to change the viewing route depending on the exhibition. The grounds also feature the "Boyo Terrace," offering beautiful views of the Seto Inland Sea's archipelago, and a garden inspired by the works of Émile Gallé. Just taking a leisurely stroll through the facility is a truly rewarding experience. Amazingly, it also has villas and a restaurant on-site, functioning as an auberge as well as a museum. If I win the lottery, I'd love to stay there! lol When I visited, taking photos in the exhibition area was allowed, but shooting videos was prohibited (this may vary by exhibition). On weekends and public holidays, a free shuttle bus operates from JR Otake Station; on weekdays, you'll need to take a local bus. Near the bus stop closest to the museum is "youme Town," a major shopping mall in the region west of Hiroshima, which is great for a little shopping or taking a break. Even if you aren't an expert in architecture or art, you'll genuinely feel that "this is an incredible place." It's also relatively close to Miyajima and Kintai Bridge.

I highly recommend an elegant French date during a trip to Hiroshima. There’s also an art museum, so after a museum date, you can naturally continue on to lunch~! After spending nearly 50 minutes touring the Simose Museum, we headed to Simose French Restaurant at Simose Art Garden Villa, where we had a reservation for 11:30. The museum’s back gate leads directly to the restaurant. The French restaurant is located even closer to the Seto Inland Sea. Inside the restaurant, centered around the pillar near the entrance, there are six spacious round tables for four on the right. On the left, there are three rectangular four-person tables that can accommodate groups and three square four-person tables, making a total of 12 tables. Later, during the 12:30 seating, I saw a group of about eight people dining with three tables joined together. From the moment we entered at 11:30, there was already a notice saying that all reservations for the day were fully booked and walk-ins were closed. The kitchen is open, and there seemed to be around 20 staff members working, including even more kitchen staff than guests, plus the dining room servers. There are five lunch set options in total. Four are seasonal lunch plans, and one is a special lunch plan. The spring season started on 3/11, the day of our visit. The special lunch, created for the restaurant’s third anniversary, is called Émile Gallé’s Garden. We were handed a pretty pastel-yellow menu. Since they offer champagne by the glass, we chose champagne. They opened a fresh bottle of Pol Roger and poured it for us. It wasn’t exactly cheap, but since it was for a date, we each had a glass to celebrate. Champagne is always delicious.🥂 The meal started with two kinds of pintxos, each presented on a two-tier tray like the one I had seen in photos of their afternoon tea. At a table for two, two portions of each were plated and served. The top tier was a quiche made with sakura shrimp. The bottom tier was a fried potato chip topped with freshly harvested spring peas. We enjoyed it elegantly with champagne. Feeling a bit like we were having afternoon tea, we also asked for a commemorative photo and got a lovely shot. The next course was an amuse-bouche to delight the palate. They served a cold soup, a cauliflower potage. It was rich and smooth, and with the added thick cream, it felt like spring was waltzing across my mouth. With the scenery outside being perfect too, it was one of those moments that makes you want to say, “It couldn’t get any better than this.” Two kinds of bread were served before the meal: baguette and campagne. They looked similar since both were sliced, but I personally preferred the baguette, which was less hard. The unsalted butter was absolutely delicious. They kept refilling the bread, and we asked for more butter and baguette one more time. For the hors d’oeuvres, they prepared a salad using vegetables and seafood grown in the Seto Inland Sea region during this season. But it wasn’t an ordinary salad. Each ingredient seemed to be brought to life, with decoration that made it look as if spring buds were sprouting. This is a salad? It was so beautiful from the moment it arrived at the table that it completely captured my eyes. In the center were a sweet sauce and a tangy sauce, and they explained that it would be good to mix them together, so that’s how we ate it. We practically scraped the plate clean and savored every bit of spring. Next came the main dish. I chose fish over meat. They said that today’s fish was a special offering of mejina. Since it was the first day of the spring season, grilled nibbled seabream was prepared, though they explained that usually grilled madai, red sea bream, is served. Since the dishes change day by day depending on ingredient availability, it isn’t a fixed menu item but simply categorized as the fish of the day. In any case, I thoroughly enjoyed the tender, plump, perfectly grilled sea bream and finished the rest of the champagne I had been carefully savoring. The clouds, as if splashed with paint, gradually spread into something artistic. I felt happy. Dessert came in two parts. The small dessert was the same for everyone, while for the main dessert, guests on the higher-tier course could choose, and since I had the basic course, I was supposed to receive the set one. But as a special gesture, they let me choose the main dessert. I listened to the explanation, though there was a limit to how much I could catch, and I heard the first one was red berry and the second was pistachio, so I chose the berry one because it sounded better to me. The small dessert came out first. And it was seriously insanely good. It was like soft-serve ice cream with two mixed flavors, strawberry sherbet and milk sherbet, and it was so, so, so delicious. How can ice cream taste this good~! I enjoyed it at least 100 times more than Amorino🌹. When I mentioned that the main dessert looked like something I had seen in the afternoon tea photos, they complimented me on my sharp eye and said it was Simose’s signature dessert. If the small dessert had more of a sherbet vibe, this one was more gelato-style, so I was very satisfied that the two ice cream desserts had different textures and styles. Enjoying the main dessert with black tea, we wrapped up the 90-minute Simose French lunch course. They said they hoped we would come back next time for afternoon tea. Even until we finished paying at the table and left, both the kitchen and dining room staff continued to show us warm hospitality. Thank you.

Located near Iwakuni Station, the Shimose Art Museum is a popular destination in Hiroshima. It’s conveniently situated on the way to Iwakuni Airport, making it an ideal stop during your travels. Initially, visiting this museum wasn’t part of the plan, but it became a last-minute addition during the final stages of trip planning. The trip started with booking a 3-night, 4-day flight to Hiroshima and reserving three hotels in the city. Later, the itinerary expanded to include a 1-night, 2-day stay in Tokyo during days 2-3. This led to canceling the second night’s accommodation in Hiroshima and booking a hotel in Yokohama instead. Multi-leg flights were also arranged, including Iwakuni to Haneda and Haneda to Hagi-Iwami. The flight from Iwakuni to Haneda departs in the afternoon, around 2 PM, leaving half a day for exploration. While planning the half-day itinerary, I discovered that Shimose Art Museum is located in this area! Situated in Otake City, the westernmost part of Hiroshima Prefecture, near the Seto Inland Sea, the Shimose Villa, French restaurant, and art museum are all in one place. After reading reviews from previous visitors, I decided to book tickets online, which offered a 10% discount. About a month before the trip, I also learned about the new manhole covers featuring Hiroshima Carp’s mascot, Carp Boy. This led to collecting manhole cards, visiting Carp-themed manholes, and adding the art museum and a French lunch reservation to the itinerary. All of this had to be accomplished within half a day! 🤣 With careful planning, it became possible to fit everything in. Using taxis to save time was key. A round trip from Otake Station to Shimose Art Museum by taxi costs around 4,000 yen, which is 10 times more expensive than the community bus fare of 400 yen, but it saves nearly 70 minutes. This allowed me to double the time allocated for the museum visit from 20 minutes to 40 minutes. Taxis also proved useful for reaching the restaurant later. They drop you off right at the museum entrance, and with pre-purchased QR code tickets, entry is seamless. The current exhibitions run from February 11 to April 19, featuring two displays in Gallery A and Gallery B, both accessible with a single ticket. Gallery A showcases dolls by Yotsuya Simon, a renowned doll artist. Some of the dolls are quite provocative, but they remain within the realm of art, and the museum is rated for all ages. Admission is 2,000 yen for adults and 1,000 yen for high school and college students, while middle school students and younger can enter for free. This policy attracts many children, who surprisingly observe the artworks quietly, reflecting the museum’s commitment to early art education. The dolls vividly portray the mysteries of the human body. After viewing the more modest pieces, I followed the route through Gallery A and the Emil Gallé Garden. The garden is small, taking only 1-2 minutes to walk around, but it’s beautifully landscaped with vibrant flowers. Next, I entered Gallery B through automatic doors. All exhibition rooms in Gallery B feature automatic doors. The theme here is also dolls, but with a more traditional Japanese style compared to the striking displays in Gallery A. Highlights include scenes of the 12 zodiac animals and Hina Matsuri. I took only two photos, preferring to appreciate the artworks visually. After passing through about 30 automatic doors, the exhibition naturally concludes. To the right of the exit, another entrance leads to the Bōyō Terrace. The terrace offers stunning views of colorful floating exhibition halls and islands in the Seto Inland Sea, including Miyajima. At night, it’s exclusively open to overnight guests, who can enjoy factory nightscapes and moonlit serenades. The weather on this day was exceptionally clear, allowing for breathtaking views of the Seto Inland Sea and clouds. It felt like receiving a lucky birthday gift. The architectural beauty harmonized with the sky, sea, and nature, creating a serene yet overwhelming visual experience. With a sense of fulfillment, I headed to the French restaurant for lunch. Skipping the museum café, I exited through the back gate, which connects to the restaurant via the Silk Road. Interestingly, this private area was created by the Shimose family. I visited the Shimose Art Museum in Otake City, Hiroshima Prefecture, designed by Shigeru Ban. Due to my background in studying architecture, I have a habit of visiting places like this. What surprised me was the colorful exhibition rooms that are movable... And they move using buoyancy. And powered by human effort... The rooms can be rearranged into various patterns, adding a playful touch to the way the exhibits are presented. (Though apparently, they haven’t actually moved them yet. lol) I didn’t know there’s a villa here where you can stay overnight. The space itself, along with the artworks, was wonderful. I enjoyed gazing at the sea and had a relaxing time that made me forget about everyday life!

From a distance, it looks like a base, and kids will absolutely go crazy! Key Highlights: · 🤖 Giant Robot: The ride is designed like a robot, with tons of slides and climbing nets—you could play all day without getting bored. · 🎢 Super Long Roller Slide: Slide down from a great height for a thrilling experience; it's the park's number one attraction. · 👶 Age-Friendly Design: In addition to the thrilling areas for older children, there's a dedicated "toddler area" with soft mats, so parents can relax. · 🏞️ Spacious Lawn: There's a large grassy area where you can run, jump, or lay out a picnic blanket to relax (remember, we won't mention food, but you can have a picnic! This is a new private art museum that opened in March 2023. Unlike public art museums, the admission fee is a little high at 1,700 yen, but it is a wonderful museum that makes you want to go back again. The building itself is art, and glass and mirrors are scattered everywhere, so the word "stylish" suits it well. I imagine the maintenance costs, such as cleaning the mirrors and what happens if they are broken, must be quite expensive. In addition to the art, there is a flower garden, a restaurant, and apparently you can even stay overnight. Even if you are not interested in art, you can still enjoy it. Highly recommended for a date with your partner. You will definitely be impressed that you took them to a stylish place.

I went to the Shimose Art Museum, which opened in Hiroshima in March. I was overwhelmed by the wooden space designed by Shigeru Ban. The interior of the museum is filled with Shigeru Ban's intricate design, such as the chairs. The glass-walled museum is lined with works by Emile Gallé, a representative of the Art Nouveau era. Outside is a garden modeled after Emile Gallé's garden. It was a hot summer, but the location was perfect.
