#europetrip #italy #varenna #castle The hike to Castello di Vezio from Varenna is a rewarding adventure offering both natural beauty and historical intrigue. The trail begins near Varenna’s charming waterfront, winding uphill through olive groves and wooded paths. The hike takes about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on your pace, and provides stunning views of Lake Como along the way. Entry to the castle costs €5 and grants access to its ancient walls, a garden dotted with olive trees, and a museum dedicated to medieval weaponry and falconry. At the top, breathtaking panoramic views of the lake and surrounding villages make the climb worthwhile.

In the small town of Varenna, on the east coast of the central part of the lake, there is a Castello di Vezio on the hill, which is a great place to enjoy the panoramic view. I’m writing this on board a fast ferry from Lenno to Como; getting to this point was a close-run thing, because despite joining the queue to buy ferry tickets before 9am it still took us 15 minutes to get to the cash desk and the ferry is packed to the gunwales. Which brings me to the point of this post: this is the third time that we have holidayed at Lake Como and although we love them, we definitely won’t be returning to our old haunts of Bellagio and Varenna. The hordes of people packing the trains, blocking the roads and clogging up streets while they pose for selfies have made these places just not fun any more - not during the high summer, anyway. But we WILL be returning to the lake. Because it is still possible to avoid the crowds just by steering clear of the ‘Golden Triangle’ of Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio. We stayed in Perledo, a ten minute bus ride (€1.80) up the hill above Varenna. It’s a truly special, unspoiled village with dramatic views across the lake and a real community that comes together to celebrate football matches in the local league, karaoke in Bar Milano and weekly food and music nights in summer (we went to the Milanese risotto and cotoletta evening and ate at long benches with the locals). There is even a free night minibus service from the train station in Varenna. Bellagio is truly beautiful, and we feel privileged to have seen it - and also fortunate to have done so when we did, because the ferry we tried to catch there was already full to capacity and not taking on any more passengers. Instead we visited Corenno Plinio, the ‘village of a thousand steps’, which was all-but-deserted. Its rabbit warren steps cascade down the hill to the lakeside, where you can take a swim on the tiny beach by the harbour. The walls of the Church of Saint Thomas of Canterbury are adorned with 600-year-old frescoes. There’s even a mini castle; in short, Corenno is a village that bats a long way above its weight. BUT - would you pay an entrance fee to get into a village? Because that’s what’s expected here - €4, either to the person in the cubicle in the main square, or via an app, before you can wander the Borgho. Clearly the residents of Corenno don’t want their homes turned into the theme-park style atmosphere of Belaggio - but is this the right way to do it? Top tips: · [ ] If staying in Perledo, try to get somewhere near Bar Milano; both the paid Arriva bus and the free night bus stop here, and it is a good source of pizza and entertainment · [ ] To get to Correno Plinio, take the train to Dervio or Dorio stations and then the free minibus shuttle to Corenno. · [ ] Food and drink options in Corenno are limited, but La Taverna Del Castello is a friendly spot - to just have a drink without eating, go inside the bar rather than in the covered dining area outside. #travel2026 #lakecomo #italianlakes #italy

Stepping off the ferry into Varenna, I felt like I had found the true, quiet soul of Lake Como. This ancient fishing village is a steep, sun-drenched staircase of pastel houses and hidden gardens, perfectly framed by the towering Alps. I spent my afternoon strolling the Passerella degli Innamorati (Lovers’ Walk), a red-railed promenade suspended over the sparkling water. Climbing up to the ruins of Castello di Vezio, I was rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of the lake’s three branches. Whether I was exploring the cypress-lined terraces of Villa Monastero or simply enjoying a gelato at a lakeside cafe, the atmosphere was pure, effortless romance. It’s a peaceful, stony sanctuary that captures the timeless elegance of northern Italy. #winterescape #travel2026 #thingstodo #italy

#hellonewyear Castello di Vezio is a delightful little castle perched above Lake Como that feels like stepping into a storybook. The views from the castle walls are simply stunning, with the lake stretching out below and mountains framing the scene. Walking through the stone courtyards and towers gives a sense of history, while the small exhibits and falconry displays add unique charm. The paths around the castle are scenic and peaceful, perfect for a slow stroll and plenty of photos. Birds often soar overhead, and gardens with flowers and herbs add color to the stone setting. Located in Lombardy, Italy, Castello di Vezio is perfect for history enthusiasts, photographers, and anyone wanting a relaxed, scenic escape with a touch of medieval magic overlooking Lake Como.

Lake Como Vezio Castle|Climb to the Top for a Full View of the Gemstone Blue Lake Upon arriving at Lake Como, the first thing to do is to queue for ferry tickets, then hike for half an hour up the mountain to reach Vezio Castle. The scenery along the way is nice and not too tiring. Vezio Castle is the perfect vantage point to overlook the entire Lake Como panorama. Standing atop the castle, the gemstone blue lake stretches out before you, its deep blue waves gently rippling with the breeze. The view of the lake and surrounding mountains is truly breathtaking. This medieval castle is not very tall but is full of historical charm. Inside, exhibits display ancient armor, sharp weapons, and vintage costumes, each piece offering a glimpse into the gallant spirit of knights from the past, immersing visitors in the traces of the medieval era. Without expending too much energy climbing, you can leisurely tour the exhibits and then reach the top for the view. From the balcony, the entire Lake Como area is visible at a glance, and the wide-open view is the castle’s most striking advantage. It’s recommended to combine this visit with a slow walk through nearby villages, allowing 1 to 1.5 hours. Avoid the midday strong sunlight; visiting in the afternoon captures the clearest blue of the lake water. The castle also features a special exhibition related to ghosts, which looks quite amusing rather than scary. If time permits when visiting Lake Como, this should definitely be your first stop to enjoy the spectacular view of the gemstone blue lake from above—truly a special experience. 🏨【Accommodation Tips】: I stayed at the Milan - Star Business Palace Hotel, booked through Trip.com. The conditions were excellent (additional introduction posted, about 1235 RMB per day excluding breakfast). It takes about an hour by train to get here. 🧡【Tips】: Ticket price: According to recent information, adult tickets cost about $8 USD (approximately in euros, depending on exchange rates). Opening hours: The castle is usually open daily from the first Saturday in March to November 1, but specific times may vary with the season (for example, summer hours may be extended). Visiting the castle at night is not recommended as it can be scary. Other notes: Visits may require advance booking, especially during peak season; the castle may close temporarily in rainy weather. Important reminder: If you come, be sure to climb to the top first thing, or you might run out of energy. The path up the mountain is somewhat steep! Work ID: XCQ2025-138
