8 hidden gems for summer vacation with your kids!
Summer Vacation Guide for Kids: 8 Beautiful and Less Crowded Places
1️⃣ Huanggang City | Hubei Province
If you're bringing kids to Huanggang, I highly recommend heading straight to Luotian Tiantangzhai. Don't hesitate! The temperature is several degrees lower in the mountains than in the city, and the dense shade keeps the sun out.
⏰ Arrive at the scenic area entrance before 8 am. It's less crowded, the air is cool, and the kids can run around comfortably. Take the cable car up the mountain, and after a short walk, you'll see the waterfall. The splashing water will excite your child for days.
📍 The viewing platform below the waterfall is a great spot for photos, but the rocks are slippery, so keep a close eye on your children. Have lunch at a farmhouse restaurant within the scenic area. The local chicken soup with crispy rice porridge was a hit with the kids. In the afternoon, head to Guifeng Mountain in Macheng. No climbing required; just stroll along the azalea-lined path at the foot of the mountain. The path is flat, so strolling with a stroller is no problem.
⚠️ The weather on the mountain is unpredictable, so remember to bring a light jacket. The steps are slippery after rain, so don't wear sandals. We stayed at a guesthouse near the entrance of Tiantangzhai for two days and one night. We could hear the stream flowing at night, and the kids slept very well.
2️⃣ Jiayuguan City | Gansu
Jiayuguan sounds very hardcore, but honestly, it's actually quite easy to visit with kids. The entire fortress scenic area isn't large; you can walk around in about two hours at your own pace. The wind on the fortress walls is very strong, so it doesn't feel hot even in summer.
📍 Enter from the East Gate and walk along the central axis to the West Wengcheng. Kids are most interested in the brick seams and flags on the fortress walls; you can have them count how many crenellations there are.
⏰ Go in after 5:30 pm. The light softens, making photos easier without backlighting, and there are half as many people. There are vendors selling apricot juice at the entrance of the scenic area; it's five yuan a cup, sweet and sour, and much better than sugary drinks.
⚠️ There's not much shade in the scenic area, so don't try to walk around at midday; kids are prone to heatstroke. For families with young children, I recommend visiting the Great Wall Museum in the morning. It's cool indoors and the explanations of how the Great Wall was built are much more interesting than just looking at the walls. Then, head into the fortified village around 4 PM to perfectly avoid the scorching sun.
3️⃣ Daxinganling Region | Heilongjiang
If you're looking for a truly cool place in summer, the Daxinganling region won't disappoint. Beiji Village is a top choice; the highest temperature there is only around 20 degrees Celsius, and you'll still need a blanket at night.
📍 The village is small. Rent a bicycle and ride along the river with your child. Russia is right across the Heilongjiang River, which kids will find fascinating.
⏰ Go to the northernmost outpost area around 6 PM to watch the sunset. Be aware of mosquitoes, so spray them with mosquito repellent beforehand. The Daxinganling forest trails are more suitable for older children. The pine needles are soft underfoot, and you can see squirrels and wildflowers, but the trails are quite long, so don't push younger children.
🍜 The local farm-style dishes, especially the stewed river fish and wild vegetable buns, are worth trying; kids can easily eat a big bowl of rice.
⚠️ Accommodation in Beiji Village needs to be booked in advance during peak season. The log cabins have limited soundproofing, so bring earplugs. It's a good place to stay for two nights, allowing for a slower pace. Kids can spend their days chasing chickens and ducks in the yard, much happier than watching cartoons.
4️⃣ Laibin City|Guangxi
Laibin isn't a popular tourist city, so there are fewer tourists, resulting in a better experience. Jinxiu Lotus Mountain is a combination of Yao ethnic culture and mountain scenery. A hike along the scenic trails with kids takes about two hours, with pavilions for rest along the way.
📍 The Yao village halfway up the mountain is worth stopping to explore. Kids are very interested in the stilted houses and looms, and the villagers are very welcoming, allowing children to touch them.
⏰ Arrive before 10 am; the mountain mist hasn't dissipated yet, making the entire forest look like a fairyland. However, the steps are slightly wet, so wear non-slip shoes. At the foot of the mountain, there's Yao ethnic minority oil tea. It tastes a bit bitter, and children might not like it, but you can buy a bowl to try, served with rice puffs and peanuts, as a unique experience.
⚠️ There are no shops on the mountain, so be sure to bring enough water and snacks beforehand. If you're bringing a small baby, a baby carrier is more practical than a stroller because there are many steps. In the afternoon, return to the county town, find a shady spot by the river, sit under a tree, let the kids play with water guns, and you can scroll through your phone—that's what summer vacation should be like.
5️⃣ Huangshan City|Anhui
Summer in Huangshan is cool in the mornings and evenings, but hot at midday. But don't just focus on the main peak; the surrounding ancient villages are where you can have fun with kids. Choose either Hongcun or Xidi. I chose Hongcun because there's more shade by the South Lake, where children can watch students sketching and even feed the koi.
📍 Sit on a bench by Moon Pond for a while; the breeze is more comfortable than air conditioning. When it gets hot at midday, we escape to the old houses in the village. The Hui-style architecture is particularly cool, and children have a natural curiosity about the courtyards and wood carvings. In the afternoon, we went to Chengkan Ancient Village. It was much less crowded than Hongcun, and the entrance fee was cheaper. There's a stream in the village where children can splash and play, but be careful of slippery stones.
🍜 Fermented tofu and stinky mandarin fish are local specialties. Children might not like them, but they'll definitely love Huangshan sesame cakes—crispy, salty, and fragrant. We bought a couple of bags to eat on the way.
⚠️ The stone-paved roads in the ancient village are uneven, making it difficult to push a stroller. We recommend using a baby carrier for small babies. We stayed in a guesthouse outside Hongcun for two days and one night; it was cheaper and quieter than staying in the village.
6️⃣ Qingdao City|Shandong
In Qingdao's summer, the sea breeze dissipates the heat. When taking children to Laoshan, don't choose overly difficult routes. Go through the Yangkou Scenic Area, take the cable car up, and after a short climb, you'll see the sea and sky merging into one. Children standing on the top of the mountain looking at the bay will inevitably exclaim "Wow!" ⏰ Enter the mountain at 8 am and descend before 11 am to avoid the midday sun. In the afternoon, go to Zhanqiao Pier. It's windy by the sea, so bring an extra sun-protective layer for the kids. They can easily spend the whole afternoon digging in the sand.
📍 On the west side of Zhanqiao Pier, you can find small crabs on the rocky beach after low tide, but the rocks are slippery, so wear Crocs. The next morning, go to the Olympic Sailing Center for Marine Culture and Tourism. Take a sailboat trip; adults and children alike will enjoy it. Tickets can be bought online in advance, which is cheaper than buying them on-site.
🍜 The famous seafood dumplings on Zhongshan Road, with mackerel and squid fillings, are delicious; the kids can easily eat five in one go.
⚠️ Qingdao has many hills, which can be tiring to push a stroller, but buses and subways allow folding strollers, so don't worry.
7️⃣ Pingxiang City | Jiangxi
Summer in Wugong Mountain is when the meadows are at their greenest, but don't expect to hike the entire way if you're bringing kids. I recommend taking both the first and second cable car lines directly to the vicinity of the Golden Summit, saving children over two hours of hiking.
📍 The meadows at the Golden Summit stretch as far as the eye can see, and the wind is strong enough to blow a hat away, so make sure your child wears a hat with a drawstring.
⏰ Arrive at the Golden Summit after 4 PM for the best lighting, fewer crowds, and to see the rolling sea of clouds – your child will feel like they're in the sky! Stay overnight at the summit tent camp. While the conditions are basic, the stargazing is worth it; your child will be too excited to sleep.
⚠️ The temperature at the summit drops to around 10 degrees Celsius at night, so bring a down jacket, not just a light jacket. To watch the sunrise the next morning, get up at 5:30 AM. If your child can't get up, don't force them. After descending the mountain, go to Wentang Town for a soak in the hot springs to relax; your child will also enjoy playing in the water.
8️⃣ Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture|Qinghai
Kanbula National Park was the most special stop on this summer retreat. The Danxia landforms and the Yellow River Reservoir are framed together, their vibrant colors creating a scene straight out of a painting. Take your child along the viewing platform route; don't go too deep. Standing on the glass walkway at the highest point and looking down, your child will stare at the red mountains and ask why they're red.
📍 You can take a boat from the pier by the reservoir; the journey takes half an hour. It can be windy, so make sure your child wears sun-protective clothing.
⏰ Enter the scenic area after 2 PM. The sunlight shines obliquely on the mountains, making the colors most vibrant, and you won't need filters for photos.
🍜 There are no proper restaurants near the scenic area entrance. We recommend trying Tibetan noodles in Jianzha County; they're cheap, plentiful, and will fill your child up.
⚠️ The altitude is around 2800 meters. Children will get breathless if they run fast, so remind them to slow down. If you're driving, the mountain roads are winding, so give children prone to motion sickness medication beforehand. This area is more suitable for older children; for younger children, the breathtaking scenery might not be as immediately striking as watching a sheep.
These eight places are all cooler than the city and less crowded, making them perfect for a cool and hassle-free summer trip with kids. Where are you planning to take your kids this year? Let's chat in the comments, maybe we'll even bump into each other!
