I came to Xiping for that Northern Song Dynasty brick pagoda, only to realize upon arrival that the pagoda and the mountains are over 40 kilometers apart, requiring trips to both ends. I decided to include both, heading into the mountains first and then returning to the city. Two days is just enough; it's a round trip of about 100 kilometers, and you need to set aside half a day for travel. Head over 40 kilometers toward Chushan Town to enter the mountains, and you'll find Tangxiyuan. This area is part of the Funiu Mountains range, with the main peak, Longtianzhai, standing over 500 meters above sea level. The forest is dense and cool. The mountains are divided into several areas: Tangxi Lake, Tangxi Gorge, Zhizhu Mountain, and Paoma Ridge. Walking through Tangxi Gorge, you can see the Shuanglong Waterfall and the series of Jiulian Pools below; the water volume depends on the season and is more abundant after rain. The wild grape corridor is shaded by vines, making it comfortable to walk through. On Zhizhu Mountain, there is a giant rock shaped like a reclining human figure, known as Shizu Peak. On Paoma Ridge, there is a sword-testing stone, named after the old stories of sword casting. The mountains contain ruins of iron smelting furnaces from the Warring States period; the Tangxi area was famous for sword making in ancient times, and the display boards provide a good overview. In autumn, the leaves turn yellow, making it a great time to walk the plank roads and see the colors of the gorge. In summer, the mountains are a few degrees cooler than the city. Bring your own water for hiking, as there's nowhere to buy it halfway up. Ticket prices have been adjusted over the years, and sometimes there are extra charges for the gorge section or internal transportation, so check the notice at the entrance before buying rather than relying on old guides. There are farmhouses halfway up the mountain where you can eat local pot-cooked chicken and cold-tossed wild mountain vegetables. Back in the county seat, admission to the Leizu Culture Park is free. Leizu is the legendary figure who taught people how to raise silkworms and reel silk, and Xiping is considered her hometown. The park features her statue, Nianzu Lake, and a circle of stone tablets. A few old mulberry trees remain in the park, telling the story of how sericulture originated in this area. Around the 6th day of the third lunar month, the locals hold ancestor worship activities, which are lively for a few days. On regular days, there aren't many people, making it a quiet place to stroll. In the spring, the nearby crabapple garden blooms in shades of pink and white. Otherwise, it's a nice place to walk along the lake, where there are benches to sit and rest for a while. There's no need to rush through the park; it's perfect for a break. In the old town, you'll find the Baoyan Temple Pagoda, built during the Northern Song Dynasty. It has a brick body with patterns of Buddhas and flying apsaras on the bricks; if you look long enough, you can see the colors of time. The pagoda isn't tall and can be seen from the alley entrance. It's located in the city, surrounded by areas where residents go about their daily lives, and people pass under the pagoda morning and evening. Whether you can go up depends on whether it's open that day; most of the time, you'll just view its structure from the outside. The shadow of the pagoda falling on the street makes for a great photo. The alleys of the old town are also interesting to explore, with street stalls selling handmade sanzi (fried dough twists) and sesame candy. The sanzi are thin, so buy a bag as a snack. If you have extra time, the county also has the Fuxing Museum, which houses many revolutionary collections. The Hongdi area along the Xiaohong River features weeping willows by the water, making it refreshing to walk in the spring. The attractions are scattered, so don't try to force them into a single route. Breakfast in Xiping starts with a bowl of savory tofu pudding, topped with sesame leaves and served with youmo (fried dough) or jiaomo (crispy dough), which is very filling. Pot dumplings are served in clay pots with hot soup. Lazy tofu is made by grinding soybeans and cooking them directly in the pot; it's coarse and a staple for locals. These items are inexpensive and can be found in small street-side shops. You can order by pointing at what the neighbors are having. Go out for a stroll in the morning, and you can eat something different for several days without repeating. Staying in the county seat is convenient, with both express hotels and guesthouses available. Prices per night vary by date and increase during holidays, so check before booking. Xiping is near the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway and the Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Expressway. Regular trains stop at Xiping Station. It's only a few dozen kilometers from Zhumadian West Station (high-speed rail), and you can get there by taxi or bus. Schedules and ticket prices change throughout the year, so check the signs at the station upon arrival to get an idea. The attractions are scattered, so having a car will make things much easier. I made "two days for two ends" sound easy, but my calves were sore for days after I got back. If I had known, I would have split it into three trips.

Thin long sleeves or T-shirts are enough for the day, but once the sun goes down, the perceived temperature drops sharply, so be sure to carry a windbreaker or a light down jacket with you. Key point: If you plan to visit mountainous areas like Chaya Mountain or Jinding Mountain, it's windier and colder at the summits, so warm, windproof clothing is a must. Choose non-slip sneakers or hiking shoes. Some sections of the mountain trails are quite steep, so don't wear white sneakers to hike—you'll regret it. 🗺️ Itinerary planning (3 days and 2 nights is just right) Day 1: City cultural tour Arrive in Zhumadian in the morning and check in at Yicheng District. Chain hotels in the city cost a little over CNY 200 per night, which is much cheaper than homestays around the scenic areas (homestays near Chaya Mountain cost over CNY 350). Here are a few recommended areas: The area near the West High-Speed Railway Station is suitable for those arriving by high-speed train, as it's convenient for transportation. The area along Wenming Avenue is close to the Jiulongmao business district, making it easy to find food and go shopping; some hotels even have a Hu-la soup shop right next door. If you want a more comfortable stay, Hampton by Hilton is one of the best-rated options in Zhumadian. Quick tip: The period from after National Day to November is not peak season, so you can get good prices by booking a week in advance. Try to avoid homestays around the scenic areas; they really aren't as cost-effective as those in the city. 📸 Instagrammable spots 1. Royal Post Station: Wear Hanfu! The Yilou Wangque (Post Tower) 30 minutes after the lights come on is the best spot for a panoramic view of the central axis. The ancient city wall "horse face" section is great for portraits with a powerful vibe. 2. Hongshiya: A hidden treasure in southern Henan. The light is softest after 4 PM. About spending: Be cautious about spending money with street vendors around scenic areas. Prioritize regular farmhouses and old shops in the old town where prices are clearly marked to avoid traps. Don't buy so-called "special souvenirs" in scenic areas; prices in the city's small commodity markets can be cut in half. About travel: Although there are fewer people from October to November, coming on weekdays is more worry-free and cheaper. The Royal Post Station still gets quite crowded on weekends. About driving: There are many mountainous sections around Zhumadian. Before setting off, be sure to check your tire tread and spare tire pressure, and make sure you have enough engine oil. There is a risk of tire punctures in the Biyang mountainous areas; emergency repairs cost me CNY 150, money that could have been saved. For a family trip in Zhumadian, the first day can be spent at Chaya Mountain. Chaya Mountain is really the top choice for family hiking. The mountain isn’t high, the difficulty is low, and the scenery is especially beautiful. It’s recommended to start early to avoid crowds. The scenic area has many elements from Journey to the West because it’s one of the filming locations. Telling the kids the story of Journey to the West makes them very interested. On the way up, you can see many unique rocks that look like monkeys, turtles, and elephants. The kids enjoy looking at them all along the way and don’t feel tired at all. Tianmo Lake is a must-visit; the scenery by the lake is stunning, and you can ride a bamboo raft for 60 yuan per person, which the kids love. The mountain slide is a must-try too. Sliding down from the mountain is very thrilling, and the kids wanted to go again after the first time. · -- The second day can be dedicated to cultural and leisure activities. In the morning, visit Nanhai Zen Temple, and in the afternoon, explore the Royal Post Station. Nanhai Zen Temple is truly impressive, with grand scale and exquisite architecture. The night market is a must-visit, offering grilled skewers, hot pot vegetables, and fried noodles with a wide variety and very cheap prices. You can eat very well for just a few dozen yuan. Traveling with kids in Zhumadian doesn’t require a very detailed itinerary. The city’s pace is slow, perfect for leisurely exploration. The people here are very warm and patient when you ask for directions. Prices are very low; accommodation and meals are affordable. A family of three can enjoy three days here with just 1,000 yuan.
